Preorder Of The Day

Tigran Hamasyan
The Call Within

Armenian jazz pianist and composer Tigran Hamasyan makes complex records that you could argue sound like two different records playing at once. The overall effect is challenging yet engrossing. The Call Within is an album inspired by the myths and history of Armenia. On lead track ‘Levitation 21’ The piano is both gentle and frenetic with bass and drums to match.

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith
The Mosaic Of Transformation

The Mosaic Of Transformation is the eighth album by Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. The composer and musician is a big hit around these parts, i.e. Norman Records. Her 2016 album Ears was awarded the coveted Norman Records Album of the Years and it’s follow-up, The Kid, received a 9/10 review from our Laurie. This time out, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith has written and ode to electricity. Our hopes are high.

The Cool Greenhouse
The Cool Greenhouse

Built around the vivid imagination and lyrics of Tom Greenhouse, The Cool Greenhouse releases its debut studio album. Produced by Phil Booth and with the benefit of a full band behind him, The Cool Greenhouse injects grand, pop-orientated visions into the framework of DIY indie, taking aim at British society and reactionary politics along the way.

GLOK
Dissident

Ride’s Andy Bell fronts up his first solo full-length under the name of GLOK. Dissident is a set of melodious and meaty electronica that draws from varied sources - Detroit techno, John Carpenter soundtracks, Boards Of Canada, that sort of thing. The epic title cut is Dissident's obvious highlight, its broiling synths ebbing and flowing across 20 Vessels-style minutes.

Drogtech
Fractured

More melodic, downtempo and head-nodding electronica from Polish artist Lukasz Palys with his third Drogtech album Fractured. Influenced by other producers such as Tycho, Helios and Hammock. It follows in the footsteps of his two acclaimed self-released full-lengths and a clutch of impressive EP material.

Bochum Welt
Seafire Remixes

Bochum Welt and Central Processing Unit go together like cheese and tomato. The former was a big cheese in the '90s IDM scene whilst the latter is an um...tomato in keeping the sound of that scene alive. On this new five track EP you get two new Bochum Welt tunes as well as remixes from James Zabiela, EOD and Telefon Tel Aviv. Be quick if you want a pizza the action (sorry).

Camarades Breton
Camarades Breton

Italian producer and DJ Camarades Breton AKA Stefano Murgia has released his self-titled album on cassette so it can be listened to continuously. It was recorded at home using basic equipment. It is a patchwork of ambient techno, hardcore, psychedelic electronic sounds and grime that, at times, is reminiscent of Seekersinternational and Filter Dread.

The Total Rejection
The Time Traveller's 3rd Will And Testament

Garage rock, punk, psych and belting pop converge on The Time Traveller's 3rd Will And Testament, the third album by The Total Rejection. You’ll find yourself shouting things like “Hawkwind!”, “Keith Moon!” and wondering if they’ve hired the services of Monkees’ songwriters Boyce & Hart as you listen to this analogue beauty.

Nídia
Badjuda Sukulbembe

A 7” vinyl accompaniment to her forthcoming second studio album Não Fales Nela Que A Mentes, kuduro wonder-kid Nídia takes the slower tracks from it and spins it into a different showcase. Badjuda Sukulbembe boasts two tracks, the heavy and imposing ‘Tarraxoz Academy’ and the infectious groove of ‘Cheirinho’.

Earth To Mickey
Brace & Bit

A new project from the oddball production genius that is Los Angeles-based Delroy Edwards, Earth To Mickey sees him team up with vocalist Mickey Van Seenus for this three-track 12” vinyl EP. Led by its title track recalling the vintage of synth-pop of Depeche Mode, Yazoo or Chris & Cosey 'Brace & Bit' sees the artist divert from his jacking house trax into an irresistible electronic pop sound.

It’s a diverse work taking in modern Afro-Portuguese dance music and classic American R&B.

The Kingstonians
Hold Down / Nice Nice

Collectors item alert! Well, a repressed version, but a mint copy of uptempo reggae classic Hold Down by The Kingstonians would set you back somewhere in the region of £400-£500. Here you can buy a mint copy of the 7” with Nice Nice on the flip for considerably less money. The two tracks are taken from the Jamaican trio’s Sufferer album from 1970.

Craig Kupka
Crystals: New Music for Relaxation 2

We all need something to relax us in these terrifying times and in the absence of readily available heroin why not turn to this archival release by Craig Kupka. This contains two longform compositions featuring (wait for it) trombone and synthesizer. These unlikely bedfellows create a meditative sound that found favour in relaxation classes.

Caleb Landry Jones
The Mother Stone

Actor and now musician, Caleb Landry Jones comes from a line of musicians, jingle writers and singer / songwriters. He is known for roles in films such as X-Men: First Class, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Get Out. The Mother Stone is his debut album and comes after years of writing songs fuelled by experiences that life throws at you. There are around 700 songs in all, so this album could just be the first of many.

Tommy Mcgee
I'm A Stranger

Tommy McGee shot out of the same stable as Al Green and, despite ostensibly having just as much talent, had a career that didn’t go in quite the same direction. The highlight of his career was his 1976 album I’m A Stranger, which was produced by Palmer James. It’s soulful, smooth and funky.

Benjamin Wallfisch
The Invisible Man (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Here is a tasty pressing of Benjamin Wallfisch's score for the 2020 flick The Invisible Man based on the legendary H. G. Wells book. The film is a science fiction horror and Wallfisch's score is a blend of organic and synthetic sounds taking in electronica and industrial sounds with particular nods towards Bernard Hermann's work. Rafael Anton Irisarri
Peripeteia

His first album for the Dais imprint, American composer Rafael Anton Irisarri’s Peripeteia reaffirms - if it ever needed to be questioned - his skill and craft in the field of ambient drone music and electronica. It’s also a display of great emotional depth and nuance, influenced by upheavals in fortune and health in recent years.

Ian Chang
属 Belonging

City Slang delivers the first full-length album from producer Ian Chang. Featuring collaborations with the likes of KAZU and Kiah Victoria but whose real strengths lie in its deeply moving instrumentals, 属 Belonging dwells in fine lineage of electronic music inhabited by a definitively human spirit.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Chunky Shrapnel

Australian psych mongers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are pretty prolific. The latest addition to their cannon is a movie and of course the soundtrack, which we have here. The movie is called Chunky Shrapnel and was directed by John Angus Stewart who has previously directed some of the band’s videos. It was filmed during the band’s 2019 European tour.

Gilbert / Lewis / Mills
MZUI

MZUI was a 1982 era project from Graham Lewis and Bruce Gilbert of Wire alongside Russell Mills. The trio initially collaborated on a multi-media project  at London's Waterloo Gallery before compiling their ideas onto an album. The sound sculptures and ambient sounds weren't totally dissimilar to Brian Eno's music of the era using the idea of sound as a landscape. This re-issue comes with a replica of the packaging of the original with a six page foldable sheet with photos.

The Good Missionaries
Fire From Heaven

The Good Missionaries were the band formed by Mark Perry of Alternative TV and Sniffin' Glue fanzine in 1979. The band were a much more eclectic affair drawing on experimental music, dub and raw groove to produce a more radical vision. This is a re-issue of their debut album, remastered and available on vinyl for the first time since 1979.

Metrist
Pollen Pt. II

Brighton-based producer Joseph Higgins delivers the second part of his planned trilogy of EPs titled Pollen, under his Metrist alias. Pollen Pt. Boyo
Where Have All My Friends Gone?

After a health scare in the form of a diagnosis of frontal lobe epilepsy two years ago, Robert Tilden started work on his next BOYO album completely on his own. Reflecting the isolation of its creation, Where Have All My Friends Gone? is stark and sad, inspired by bands such as Deerhunter, Sparklehorse and Majical Cloudz.

Junkie XL
Mad Max: Fury Road (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

The soundtrack to George Miller’s post-apocalyptic 2015 masterpiece Mad Max: Fury Road, composed by Dutch producer Tom Holkenborg (a.k.a. Junkie XL) gets a re-issue, on special ‘Blood & Fire’ and ‘Sand & Water’ coloured vinyls with a die-cut slip cover containing two interchangeable inserts courtesy of artist Boneface. With over 200 instruments used in the conjuring of vast, menacing soundscapes, it’s one of the great film scores of modern times.

GTO's
Permanent Damage

Standing for Girls Together Outrageously, The GTO’s solitary studio album Permanent Damage is getting a vinyl re-issue. Laura Marling
Song For Our Daughter

A physical release for Laura Marling’s seventh studio album Song For Our Daughter, the digital version of which she rolled out early a month ago in response to the lockdown. It’s getting to the point where it’s unexceptional that Marling is releasing one exceptional album after another after more than a decade in music, but that’s all the more reason to cherish one of this country’s finest songwriters of the new millennium.

Mas Amable

New York based artist Brian Piñeyro releases his long-awaited sophomore studio record under his alias DJ Python. Skooshny
Deep Dive

Allow me for a second to make this a slightly personal description when I tell you that Skooshny is probably my dad's favourite band. So I'm probably only the second most knowledgable person in our family to write this. They are the long running project of Mark Breyer and the legend goes that initially they existed too late to catch a ride on the Byrds and Big Star bandwagon and too early to be aligned with R.E.M. and later Teenage Fanclub. Breyer has continued to quietly release records and so I'm delighted that Market Square have pressed up 300 5 track 7"s which will hopefully help Skooshny find a deserved new audience.

Stick In The Wheel
Hold Fast

Stick in the Wheel are a London-based folk duo whose traditionally melodic yet powerful delivery is apposite for their political and socially aware lyrics. Hold Fast follows 2018’s Follow Them True and is their third album. It arguably comes at a time when their political punch could be just what we need.

The Velvet Underground
Loaded

Loaded was the fourth and penultimate album by The Velvet Underground and the last one to feature any of the original members, most notably, Lou Reed. It is, of course, an absolute classic and should be owned by anyone who has ever expressed even a passing interest in music. It features such greats as Sweet Jane and Rock & Roll.

Talking Heads
Speaking in Tongues

None more jittery New Yorkers Talking Heads had already released four well regarded studio albums before they embarked on Speaking in Tongues. Though 1980's innovative Remain in Light had spawned the mega hit Once in a Lifetime, Speaking in Tongues was their true commercial breakthrough blending their arty beginnings with an increasingly danceable sound and giving them a top ten hit with Burning Down the House.

Madlib
Shades Of Blue

A lovely album where prime beat maker Madlib was given the run of the Blue Note catalogue and was pretty much told 'do what you like'. Which as you might possibly be able to imagine was to use old sounds to create new and exciting shapes. Here, Madlib reworks sounds by the likes of Donald Byrd and Horace Silver to stunning effect. A true hip-hop visionary.

Philip Glass
Glassworks

Is Philip Glass really conceited or does the word "glass" just work surprisingly well with everything? Either way, this record is called Glassworks and characterises its composing protagonist as a gentle, quietened artist, interested in crafting meditative and minimal works. Recommended for the Glass fan who wants to take it easy, for once. You deserve a day off.

It's being reissued now with unheard demo material, as well as live cuts.

This is the one with 'Birdhouse In Your Soul' and 'Your Racist Friend' and 'Istanbul' and 'We Want A Rock' and you've probably wanted it on vinyl for ages, hooray for this repress!

The Strokes
Is This It

The Strokes’ dynamic 2001 debut Is This It, with hard-to-resist faves like Last Nite and Someday which helped the growly Julian Casablancas and co. wedge themselves firmly into the indie rock canon. Slowdive
Souvlaki

A much needed reissue of Slowdive’s second album, Souvlaki from 1993. Hailed as their best album, it doesn’t take long to see why; the classics are on here and they’re ready to make your eyes glaze over, your shoulders slump and your whole body just sink under the bed covers as their blissed, reverbing hot air balloon of sound gently takes you away. Played early in the morning, in the dark, after some booze for best effects.     CD comes as a 2 disk pack with extra tunes and two remixes.

Grinderman
Grinderman

If Nick Cave didn't have enough to in 2007 dealing with his Bad Seeds he set up Grinderman as a more rock orientated project to explore once again the murky scuzz racket of his earlier band the Birthday Party. The first fruits of the project was this self titled debut which also featured Cave's long term right hand man Warren Ellis (the Dirty Three). The result was a raw and primal offering, sonically at odds with the more gentle yearning of his Bad Seeds work.

Babyshambles
Shotter's Nation

Shotter's Nation was the second album from never knowingly not wasted the Libertines co-frontman Pete 'Peter' Doherty under his Babyshambles moniker. It sees him collaborating with an unfathomably eclectic bunch of artists such as Kate Moss, Ian Brown and Bert Jansch and this is probably the only time you'll see those three in the same sentence. Not exactly the pinnacle of recorded music but at least he's alive I suppose.

BBC Radiophonic Workshop
The Radiophonic Workshop

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop were a legendary set of boffins who were paid money to discover new ways of making electronic sound that could be used as ident music on television shows. Their work was a huge influence on electronic music and this LP collects all the futuristic sounds they made between 1968 and 1975. No self respecting fan of electronic music history should be without it.

Comus
First Utterance

First Utterance is the debut album by acid folk/prog folk band Comus. It was originally released in 1971. They’re named after a work by John Milton and a Greek god. It’s fair to say they sound different to most other bands, but their influence has spread far and wide with David Bowie, Opeth and Current 93 all claiming to be fans. Current 93 covered their first single, Diana, which is featured here.

Modern Life Is Rubbish

Modern Life Is Rubbish announced Blur as a serious proposition. Celebrity Skin was the third album from Courtney Love and Hole. Their previous album Live Through This had left behind the racket of debut Pretty on the Inside forging a more radio-friendly sound. Placebo
Loud Like Love

We might want to mock Placebo at every turn but there's no denying their longevity. Loud Like Love was their 2013 album which say the three piece explore themes of love in all its forms. Deep stuff which undoubtedly sold truckloads of copies across Europe.

Monks
Black Monk Time

The Monks are one of those hugely seminal groups who other hugely seminal groups name drop. With these lot however, it's wholly deserved. Their music and sound has influenced countless of bands and genres, including garage rock, punk, experimental rock, hardcore, krautrock, and psychedelic rock. Formed whilst stationed as GI's in Germany in the mid-60s, the group decided to carry on the band when they returned home. They play a hard-edged, fuzzed-up and darke take on garage rock, which sort of sounds like a beat group playing punk rock. Venomous, pissed off and strictly anti-war; The Monks were the real deal. Will appeal to fans of The Fall, Stooges, MC5 and The Sonics.

Fugazi
The Argument

What makes you laugh? Arguments. So said Brian Wilson but there's nothing funny about Fugazi's final album The Argument released way back in 2001. It was, says leader Ian Mackaye an anti war manifesto but here the post hardcore band added cello and strings into their sound for what was received as one of their best albums. They went on hiatus in 2003 never to return but this stands up as one of their greatest statements.

'Feedbacker' is Japanese experimental metal band Boris’ masterpiece, encompassing one song divided into five distinct movements. We Were Exploding Anyway // Heavy Sky EP

If you liked a lot of things in 2010 then now could be a good time to revisit them as there are lots of 10th anniversary releases hitting the shelves. The latest is We Were Exploding Anyway by Sheffield math rockers 65daysofstatic which is now paired with their Heavy Sky EP and released on coloured vinyl. Always a great live band We were Exploding Anyway sees them experimenting with electronics and glitches on a euphoric rule breaking album.

Four Tet
Beautiful Rewind

Beautiful Rewind was the seventh album released by Four Tet (aka Kieran Hebden). It was (ahem) 'dropped' without any fanfare or trailers which led to an excitable reception particularly with lead track Kool FM which eventually found its way onto Grand Theft Auto. Elsewhere it's more reliable electronics from Hebden which expands on his previous There Is Love In You by moving his fluttering sample-based electronica into darker territories.

On 12” vinyl or CD on Text. In perfect indemnible style, Four Tet releases his new album on his own imprint shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Only info in this is via his bareboned tweets, giving us the front cover and the fact that there are only two songs, each around 20 minute mark in length, one entitled Morning Side, the other (shockingly) Evening Side. Belle and Sebastian
The Boy With The Arab Strap

On this, their third album Belle and Sebastian were getting used to becoming some kind of accidental indie-rock royalty. They became more knowing with songs about US fanzine 'Chickfactor' and A & R man extraordinaire Seymour Stein. Here, leader Stuart Murdoch began his crusade to let other band members sing which is always a bad idea as at the end of the day it's all about the voice innit?. Still, good album. Re-issued as part of the pre-new album celebrations.

Crass
The Feeding Of The 5000

These days Steve Ignorant tours the country with Slice Of Life -  an acoustic guitar/piano based band talk-singing, and whilst his lyrics are still political it’s a far cry from what exploded out of him in 1978. The Feeding Of The 5000 was the first album by Crass, a noisy, sweary, political punk band. 18 songs in 31 minutes. Proper punk, that. LP on Crass Records.

Bloc Party
Silent Alarm

It's hard to recall sometimes given their recent, flailing output but Bloc Party were quite the incendiary band back in the day. Their debut Silent Alarm showcased their tight, energetic sound which married propulsive indie-rock to danceable rhythms. A large slab of credit must go to drummer Matt Tong whose rampant playing propelled the songs along at breakneck speed. They never quite hit these dizzy heights again so if you only buy one Bloc Party LP make it this one.

Nadine Shah
Love Your Dum And Mad

Since her debut, Love Your Dum and Mad landed in 2013, Nadine Shah has gone on to release a further two albums and receive a Mercury Music Prize nomination.Time to revisit her debut, then. She cites her influences as Maria Callas, Nina Simone, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. This odd mix makes for a sound that could be described as Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds meets Broken English-era Marianne Faithful, which, as it turns out, makes for a classic debut.

Massive Attack
Mezzanine

Mezzanine is a dark masterpiece, as black, as glossy and as intimidating as the beetle creature on its cover. Angel and Teardrop turn up on TV often enough (and rightly so), but the whole album is worth digging into for its uneasy moods. This hasn’t been available on record for a while, so Universal are bringing it back on suitably heavyweight vinyl.

Metronomy
Nights Out

Way before they became a curly-haired pop phenomena, Metronomy were a weird little electro band. This is the first album where they started to write 'proper' songs and have a man sing them. "Heartbreaker' particularly foreshadows their increasingly endearing rinky-dink pop. 10th anniversary re-issue 2LP on Because.

Tom Waits
Swordfishtrombones

Released originally in 1983, Swordfishtrombones saw Tom Waits undergo a new lease of creative life. Now free from his record deal with Asylum, Waits produced the record himself, veering away from the piano / string orchestra arrangements that characterised the first decade or so of his career and towards more abstract, eclectic arrangements. It was instantly hailed as a masterpiece.

Tricky
Maxinquaye

Tricky’s Maxinquaye has retained its power and significance long after the term / scene that it first appeared in, trip-hop, has faded from favour. Jamie T
Kings & Queens

Kings & Queens was the second album from Jamie T. It took the signature sound of his successful debut Panic Prevention and gave it a grittier and more paranoid air. He mixes his South London singing/rapping style with blasts of jazz, hip-hop and noise creating an album that was both poignant and thought provoking. Ten years later the bods at Virgin have kindly re-issued it for your pleasure.

James Blake

James Blake unleashed his eponymous debut album back in 2011. Sound wise, a door had been kicked down by The xx, which made the transition to success easier for Blake. It was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize that year only to beaten to the top prize by PJ Harvey's Let England Shake. Includes the singles Limit To Your Love and The Wilhelm Scream.

Allegiance and Conviction is the twelfth album from Michigan space rock / ambient duo Windy and Carl. It is their first in 8 long years following 2012’s We Will Always Be. Cate Le Bon
Reward

You know what? Everything Cate Le Bon involves herself in is of interest. Le Bon’s previous work has encompassed all manner of sounds and quirks; think pop music with a difference. The far-afield sounds of psychedelia, art pop, indie rock and pop meet with wistful guitar lines, fanciful vocals, intriguing lyrics and melodies which skip and wander. Quirky and beautiful songs, delivered with Le Bon's distinct Welsh Valleys lilt.

Sons Of Kemet
Your Queen Is A Reptile

Sons Of Kemet return with their third LP of iconoclastic jazz takes. Your Queen Is A Reptile has Shabaka Hutchings and company using sax, tuba and dual-drums to conjure music that sees traditional jazz modes cusping on several sounds of the Caribbean diaspora. Soca, calypso, merengue and more all rumble in the lines of the drum work here, and Hutchings masterfully uses his horn to conduct the proceedings.

EOB
Earth

EOB is Ed O’Brien from a band you may know called Radiohead. Whilst the rest of his bandmates were off doing their own thing Ed thought, rather self-deprecatingly, that no one would be interested in an album by him. However, he amassed a bunch of songs that he thought were worthy and Earth is the collective result. The songs genre-hop from the fragility of folk music to the euphoria of house and are underpinned by their memorable melodies and unflinching lyrics.

Spiritual Jazz Vol. 11 : SteepleChase

SteepleChase Records is the Copenhagen-based jazz label set up by Nils Winther. It specialises in bringing European jazz to the fore. Its origins lie in recording the likes of Chet Baker, Dexter Gorden and Stan Getz when toured in the country. However, it specialised in  European-based artists such as Billy Gault, Johnny Dyani and Khan Jamal, and also released some obscure gems by Jackie McLean and Mary Lou Williams. Spiritual Jazz Vol. 11 doffs its cap to the label with this special release.

Félicia Atkinson
The Flower And The Vessel

Félicia Atkinson returns to Shelter Press (Black Zone Magick Chant, Eli Keszler) with another set of fourth-world electronics and nocturnal musique concrete. Some of the tracks on The Flower And The Vessel are sweet hazes of keys, whispered vocals and music-box twinkles; others, like ‘You Have To Have Eyes’, are unsettling layered drones that bring to mind Jenny Hval or The Bad Seeds at their most abstract. Stephen O’Malley contributes to The Flower And The Vessel’s 19-minute-long closer ‘Des Pierres’

Crack Cloud
Crack Cloud

Canadian collective Crack Cloud bring together their two EPs on one slab o’ wax here. Crack Cloud - made up of a similarly eponymous 2016 record and 2017’s Anchoring Point - is a fun, mildly anarchic mix of Gang Of Four-style post-punk and lumbering noise rock. A few points also bring to mind a sprightlier version of Hookworms’s much-lauded Microshift.

Gia Margaret
There's Always Glimmer

Gia Margaret’s There’s Always Glimmer was one of the slow-burn hits of 2018 in the U.S.A.. Produced by Margaret herself and initially issued in July to little fanfare, interest in the record snowballed to the point where it ended the year in the ‘Best Of’ lists from Gorilla Vs. Bear and The Line Of Best Fit. It’s only right, then, that There’s Always Glimmer should get its first pressing outside of the U.S. courtesy of Dalliance Recordings. John Carpenter
Halloween - 40th Anniversary Edition

The worlds of film and music are hell-bent on squeezing every last drop of juice from the reboot of John Carpenter’s Halloween. This one here is not to be confused with a soundtrack album for the 40th anniversary movie - it is, in fact, the 40th anniversary edition of the ORIGINAL 1978 score. Apparently the first official release of this soundtrack was a remixed version, so for this new edition Carpenter’s partner-in-crime Alan Howarth has faithfully copied over the film's audio tracks in the same order in which they appear on-screen.

Grime up-and-comer slowthai could be a big fan of mid-2000’s indie also-rans The Holloways - there’s a chance that Nothing Great About Britain is titled after the ‘Generator’ group’s 2006 LP So This Is Great Britain?. Mind you, that’s pretty much where the similarities between the acts end. The Northampton MC goes hard on his debut full-length, blending the sharp-tongued fury of early Dizzee Rascal with the observational nous of Mike Skinner. Probably the start of something.

ye

The shy and retiring Kanye West drops the eighth LP of what, to this point, has been a relatively uneventful career. By Yeezy’s standards, ye is short and sweet.
