Daily vinyl update

All today's new stuff, pre-orders, restocks, reviews, features and promos. Basically, pretty much the full rundown of everything of interest that's happened at Norman Records today.Published: Saturday 25th May, 2019

The Streets
Everything Is Borrowed

Everything Is Borrowed was the Streets fourth album and saw a return to form for the band after The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living which was the first the Streets album to get a mixed reception on release. Instead Everything Is Borrowed concentrated on positive vibes and feel good anthems reflected in the fact that a lot of its tracks have been played on their 2018 and 2019 greatest hits tours.

Haruomi Hosono
Cochin Moon

Cochin Moon is Haruomi Hosono’s 5th solo album, inspired by a trip to India and set as the soundtrack to a non-existent Bollywood film. The record was originally released in 1978 and as such was massively ahead of its time with its manic electronic instrumentation. FFO Cluster, Aphex Twin. Artwork was provided by Tadanori Yokoo.

Flying Lotus
Flamagra

Fresh off making people throw up in the cinema with Kuso, Flying Lotus is back at it again with his latest album Flamagra. As always, the album is a frenetic maelstrom of hip-hop, R&B, jazz, soul, funk, beats, and whatever else Mr Lotus managed to put on between joints. He's also managed to fit in enough guests for a decent music festival with Solange, Tierra Whack and George Clinton appearing as well as lots (and lots) more.

Cate Le Bon
Reward

You know what? Everything Cate Le Bon involves herself in is of interest. Le Bon’s previous work has encompassed all manner of sounds and quirks; think pop music with a difference. The far-afield sounds of psychedelia, art pop, indie rock and pop meet with wistful guitar lines, fanciful vocals, intriguing lyrics and melodies which skip and wander. Quirky and beautiful songs, delivered with Le Bon's distinct Welsh Valleys lilt.

Ash
’94 – ’04 – The 7’’ Singles Box Set

During their heyday from 1994 to 2004, Ash were one of the greatest singles bands around, with enough chart-denting firepower to sink a whole navy. This limited-edition box set collects 20 singles over ten 7” vinyls, including ‘Clones’ available for the very first time on the format.  All this reminds me. One R*c*rd St*r* D*y I saw a man dressed like Mario going through the 7" bins at Rough Trade East looking for Ash 7"s. A very fond memory.

David Toop / Jan Hendrickse / Cath Roberts / CUEE
Boundries

A split here, containing a fresh and exciting collaboration on each side. On side A, experimental music’s elder statesman David Toop pairs with Jan Hendrikse in order to actualise a text score by Chieko Shiomi, very quietly. On side B, Cath Roberts, the sax leader of Sloth Racket, leads the large City University Experimental Ensemble in a performance of new work of hers. Out on multi.modal.

Billy Childish
Punk Rock Ist Nicht Tot

Punk Rock Ist Nicht Tot is a career-spanning compilation album by hugely prolific Godfather of the Kent punk and garage rock scene, Billy Childish. Contains songs from his work with The Pop Rivets, The Milkshakes, Thee Mighty Caesars, The Delmonas, Thee Headcoates and more. Sleeve notes by Stewart Lee.

Steve Moore
Beloved Exile

Steve Moore is a noted figure within the modern synth community, respected for his soundtrack work and his duo Zombi. Beloved Exile is the first solo studio non-soundtrack album he has made in five years, and Moore leaps on the opportunity to fully follow his own path. Guests including Mary Lattimore and Emel Mathlouthi. On Temporary Residence.

Roger Limb and The BBC Radiophonic Workshop
The Box Of Delights (Original TV Soundtrack)

In 1984, Roger Limb - with the aid of the Radiophonic Workshop - took on the job of scoring the BBC’s adaptation of Masefield’s 1935 fantasy adventure classic ‘The Box of Delights’. Silva Screen are reissuing the score which combined orchestral work with the kind of innovative electronic tampering you’d expect from the Radiophonic Workshop.

Joe Meek
I Hear A New World

Joe Meek’s amazing vision of spacey DIY strange-pop is beautifully represented on his 1960 album I Hear A New World: An Outer Space Music Fantasy, reissued here by Poppydisc. Meek was the master of getting unusual effects out of cheap (or no) equipment, his natural curiosity and ingenuity shining through in every sound.

North Sea Radio Orchestra
I A Moon

Zeitkratzer
Performs Songs from the Albums

Led by Reinhold Friedl, Zeitkratzer are an ensemble of musicians who work with and reinterpret compositions by an ever reaching range of avant-garde and fringe artists. Their list of works include Lou Reed, Whitehouse, Throbbing Gristle, Stockhausen, John Cage. Now they turn their mad orchestra’s gaze upon the early works of Kraftwerk, specifically their first two albums.

Run The Jewels
Run The Jewels 2

The first Run The Jewels record capped a victory lap of a year for producer EL-P and rapper Killer Mike, who respectively released the bombastic 'Cancer 4 Cure' and poignant 'R.A.P Music' -- they then went on to release their collaborative self-titled record, which showed off the affection and understanding they share for each other's work. They're back now with the blood red 'Run The Jewels 2'.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress

We thought we'd lost them forever but here they are with their first single length album since their very earliest days. Recorded in late 2013/14 with Greg Norman (not the golfer but the Electrical Audio engineer), 'Asunder, Sweet and other Distress' is described as Godspeed's most focussed and best sounding record to date. Clocking in at an anaemic (for them) 40 minutes, all the usual touchstones are in place, so expect enormo-crescendos, strings and guitars in glorious unison and exhilarating noise and drone explorations. For those with an interest in stats, track count is at 4 this time whilst exclamation mark total is at a lowly 2.

The xx
I See You

Are you ready to weep? Here come sad Londoners the XX with a brand new album and following on from Jamie's solo success it sounds like they've brought some upbeat dance floor energy into their misery. Hall and Oates sampling lead single 'On Hold' shows them sounding relatively upbeat.  Comes on all sorts of different formats.

Radiohead
Kid A

Kid A is still Radiohead's most challenging album and the furthest they've headed into electronic textures but it's all the better for it. The band channelled the sounds they were hearing on records by the likes of Autechre and applied them to their own sound. Such a different beast from OK Computer but a very innovative and important record.

Can
Future days

Damo Suzuki's last album with Can is a definite highpoint from the band's incredible ouvre. All the elements that make the band so timelss and radical sounding even now are here in abundance: experimentation with all manner of electronic and organic sound textures and atmospherics pinned down by Jaki Liebezeit's jawdropping rhythms and augmented by an advanced melodic sensibility. As with all the recent Can reissues on Mute, all the stops have been pulled out in remastering this for vinyl to ensure optimum sound quality.

Radiohead
Hail To The Thief

Radiohead’s ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ album, Hail to the Thief saw the obstinate Oxonians leaving behind a fair bit of the bleakness of the Kid A and Amnesiac period in favour of a lighter, rockier style. With fourteen songs altogether pushing an hour, it’s a wobbly fellow, but it easily features a few of Thom & Co.’s career highlights.

Cocteau Twins
Heaven Or Las Vegas

‘Heaven Or Las Vegas’ was originally released in 1990 and was to become the bands most commercially successful release, reaching Number 7 in the UK Album Charts. Numerous publications have since declared it one of the best albums of the 90s, with Pitchfork calling it “a core of ungodly gorgeous songs that is every bit as moving and relevant today as it ever was.”

Can
Tago Mago

Can’s most sprawling and untethered work. The first side goes from the plaintive Paperhouse to the apocalyptic groove of Mushroom, to the uptempo masterpiece Oh Yeah, making for as great a side of vinyl as ever there was. Side two is taken up by the funk monster Halleluhwah. Side three brings us Aumgn’s occult channelling. The last side has the manic Peking O and the mournful closer Bring Me Coffee or Tea. Damo, Jaki, Holger, Irmin and Michael are all at the peak of their powers and in perfect cosmic harmony. Sacred stuff to be sure and never more so than on double vinyl.

Throbbing Gristle
The Second Annual Report Of Throbbing Gristle (40th Anniversary Edition)

Not in fact their second anything, The Second Annual Report Of Throbbing Gristle, is the band’s now four decade old debut. Though their impact on electronic and industrial music is undeniable, listening to these tracks I’m relieved their needlessly “transgressive” lyrics and imagery have not been so influential.

Boards of Canada
Geogaddi

“Geogaddi Boards Cruise?”, “Yeah sweet”. Aaaaah the Boards Cruise… those were the days: spontaneous late night road trips through deep countryside with great pals, blasting Boards of Canada at uncomfortable volumes. Geogaddi is pretty dark and weirdo, so we often ended up lost and a bit scared after choosing this record. 3 X 140gm LP, gatefold, on Warp Records. Beautiful Place!

Boards of Canada
Music Has The Right To Children

Boards of Canada’s legendary debut LP tapped charmingly into its generation’s nostalgia for dodgy TV reception, public service announcements and unforgettable classroom mnemonics. It did so within a contemporary framework of analogue synthesisers and hip-hop rhythms, with a great ear for groove and melody. Today, the mutant, hybrid descendent of BoC’s yearning style is vaporwave, innit. Oh well.

Burial
Untrue

By the time Burial's second album surfaced, his reputation had grown to underground stardom, even if his identity was still a secret. 'Untrue' continued the story of the twilit inner city, loneliness and distant threats informing a melancholic rhythmic atmosphere, and is now seen as a landmark in electronic music.

Aphex Twin
Richard D James

In a career full of brilliant music, this could possibly be one Aphex Twin's high-water marks, widely popular at the time of release. It introduced his pulverising 'drill and bass' techniques, moving him away from his acid 'n' ambience beginnings. Contains several classics such as 'Cornish Acid', 'Girl/Boy Song' etc.

Rhythm & Sound
No Partial

Seminal slice of the deepest, most blissed-out dub from the duo formerly known as Basic Channel, the unmatched pioneers of Dub Techno. One-sided dubplate style ten inch of a spacious groove with gravitational bass and chords echoing off in infinite permutations. Unparalleled genius from Berlin.

Modest Mouse
The Moon & Antarctica

The third full length album by the popular American group was their first for a major label. Here it is repressed on lovely vinyl.

Basic Channel
Q1.1

A quarter-century on and still no-one has ever managed to match Basic Channel. The duo of Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald rewrote the rulebook back in the ‘90s with their fusion of Detroit club sonics with dub/reggae production trickery. Pretty much every techno act that has emerged from Berlin since owes Basic Channel a debt. 1993 EP Q1.1 is just one of the many pioneering records they laid down back in the day, and now it’s been re-pressed for your delectation.

John Carpenter
The Fog - New Expanded Edition Original Film Soundtrack

John Carpenter not only directed his 1980 spooky pirate movie The Fog, he also personally soundtracked it. Is there no end to the man’s talents? Dramatic organs and creepy synth arpeggios do an admirable job of setting the tone. And it was remastered by erstwhile collaborator Alan Howarth. This double disc set on Silva Screen contains 20 minutes of music not previously released.

Basic Channel
Phylyps Trak II

Minimal/dub techno pioneers Basic Channel re-press their 1994 classic Phylyps Trak II. Split across two sides of wax, this one is a mighty fusion of hard techno beats, thick bass and Ostgut synth textures. It’s also just as good if you spin it at either 45 or 33 - the slower one is the sort of deep meditation that has influenced countless artists down the years.

Basic Channel
Q-Loop

This little 12" from mostly-defunct Berlin techno nexus Basic Channel reissues 3 tracks from the 1995 BCD compilation, previously only available on CD. Despite their age, these productions still sound relevant today, with wisps of static noise, dub techno chords and staccato sub bass forming a hazy mix.

Various
Natural Born Killers

Trent Reznor-produced soundtrack to the 1994 Oliver Stone movie Natural Born Killers, featuring music from an eclectic mix of artists including Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith, Cowboy Junkies, Dr Dre, L7, Bob Dylan, Jane's Addiction, Nine Inch Nails etc.

Max Richter
The Leftovers - Music From The HBO Series - Season One

Iggy Pop
Soldier

Soldier was released in 1980, the fourth solo album by our hero Iggy Pop. Here the proto-punk legend Pop worked with member of legendary actual-punks The Sex Pistols, in the form of Glen Matlock. And don’t forget vocals from Simple Minds and David Bowie! This reissue on Music On Vinyl is limited to 1000 copies only.

Jaylib
Champion Sound

Mad beat-drama here, combining the killer skills of Madlib and J Dilla to form Jaylib! The duo trade beat-making and rap-rhyming skills over the course of the album, which was first released in 2003. Needless to say, each excel in both practices. Champion Sound is a double LP, reissued on the Stones Throw label.

The Charlatans
Melting Pot

A long overdue repress of the greatest hits album covering the earlier career of the Madchester survivors who weren't from Manchester. This has pretty much all the essential tracks from the years 1990 to 1997 when the Charlatans were signed to Beggars Banquet. Including indie disco staples, 'The Only One I Know' and 'Just When Your Thinking Things Over', a remix from the Chemical Brothers of 'Patrol' and lesser known gems like 'Can't Get Out Of Bed'. Aphex Twin
I Care Because You Do

Arguably one of Aphex Twin’s greatest albums, I Care Because You Do is the last of his analogue era. You get some technoish numbers, the dog-bothering banger ‘Ventolin (Video Version)’ and ‘Alberto Balsam’, which samples a chair scrape and some metal pipes to remarkably emotionally resonant effect. Also, a classic Aphex-grin cover.

Nightmares On Wax
Smokers Delight

The Nightmares on Wax re-issue campaign wouldn't be complete without this, their most well known and well regarded album. As our customer reviewer Andrew righty points out, this was the album they went from bleep to bong and is full of classic mid 90's style laid-back smoky grooves.

Nightmares On Wax provided the constant chill vibes for Warp Records back in the day, and 'Carboot Soul' kept a steady hand on proceedings, melding together trip-hop sounds with the same old jazz affections and haze of 'Smoker's Delight'. It's being reissued with all its siblings as part of the N.O.W. Is The Time Campaign, which will hopefully immortalise this smooth type of easy listening.

Craven Faults
Springhead Works

Like kraut rock made on the Yorkshire Moors. Thats what I personally said about the first Craven Faults record 'Netherfield Works'. This time these mysterious Yorkshire people are back with new works which will again appeal to fans of old dusty northern synths. Certainly the likes of Kieran Hebden, Dan Snaith and Gold Panda have been getting on board.

Saint Etienne
Tiger Bay (Deluxe Edition)

Saint Etienne, the legendary Britpop frontrunners, are re-releasing their 1994 LP 'Tiger Bay'. It's a heady mix of pastoral folk and heavy dance music like techno and dub. There are all sorts of nice shiny things like a 'Hug my Soul' sticker, a 24x12” glossy poster, and a a 12-track vinyl compilation of rarities and demos. Tuck in.

Coil
Astral Disaster Sessions Un/finished Musics

Coil's 1999 opus Astral Disaster is an often-overlooked highlight of their extensive discography, centring on sonically vast, emotionally deep Kosmische epics and punctuated with pithier statements. This release presents a brace of unheard tracks and mixes from the album sessions, including the lengthy Cosmic Disaster and a promo CD mix of I Don't Want To Be The One.

The Comet Is Coming
Trust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery

On their latest LP the futuro-jazz trio The Comet Is Coming encourage us to Trust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery. Whether or not you think such a sentiment is sound advice is up to you, but one thing that we can all agree on is that this is another incendiary set of electrified saxophonic fare from Shabaka Hutchings et al (he's the one from Sons Of Kemet, by the way). Kate Tempest guests on ‘Blood Of The Past’.

Death and Vanilla
Are You A Dreamer?

Super Swedes Death and Vanilla return for their first album since 2015's To Where The Wild Things Are. The group peddle a lovingly retro form of synth and dream pop which has drawn comparisons to Broadcast, Cocteau Twins and is heavily influenced by library music, German Krautrock and 60s psych. I daresay you are going to love it.

Craven Faults
Netherfield Works

Right, this is really something special. A cloaked Yorkshire based producer unfurling two long form pieces of pulsating vintage synth to soundtrack journeys across the post industrial landscapes of West Yorkshire. 'Netherfield Works' perfectly encapsulates the barren but beautiful landscape yet will appeal to fans of the Deep Distance label, XAM Duo and of course the original movers and shakers in Koln and Dusseldorf.

Art Brut
Wham! Bang! Pow! Let’s Rock Out!

Berlin-based indie rockers Art Brut are back together for their first album in 7 years. Wham! Bang! Pow! Let’s Rock Out! comes after lead vocalist Eddie Argos has lived a bit. In the intervening years he has been hospitalised, had a son, a relationship break-up, written a comic, a memoir and a musical. All this has informed the the upbeat post-punk that harks back to their 2005 album Bang Bang Rock and Roll. LP and CD on Alcopop!

Ezra Collective
You Can't Steal My Joy

I see saxophones, I see dreadlocks... I hear jazz. This is the debut album from this London five piece who also blend afrobeat, hip-hop and grime into their concoction of sound. They've been doing pretty well for themselves (even playing at Quincy Jones birthday) and there's always room for one jazz album in the Mercury Prize. This will probably have a good a shout as any.

Erland Cooper
Sule Skerry

The sea. Really big isn't it? And sort of flappy. Living in Orkland Erland Cooper knows all about the sea and has decided to make his second album all about the great big wet thing. Previous album Solan Goose (all about the goose?) got all kind of plaudits from the likes of the Quietus, 6 Music etc so expect this one to do the same...but wetter.

Gia Margaret
There's Always Glimmer

Gia Margaret’s There’s Always Glimmer was one of the slow-burn hits of 2018 in the U.S.A.. Produced by Margaret herself and initially issued in July to little fanfare, interest in the record snowballed to the point where it ended the year in the ‘Best Of’ lists from Gorilla Vs. Bear and The Line Of Best Fit. It’s only right, then, that There’s Always Glimmer should get its first pressing outside of the U.S. courtesy of Dalliance Recordings. The shoegaze-shrouded folk songs here are reminiscent of Lyla Foy and Juliana Barwick.

The Wedding Present
Go Out And Get 'Em Boy!

Here we have a reissue of The debut single by The Wedding Present. Go Out And Get ‘Em Boy! Was the track that introduced the world to the Leeds band’s frenetic jangle. It features (The Moment Before) Everything’s Spoiled Again on the B-side. 7” on Optic Nerve includes poster and postcard.

The Flying Lizards
The Secret Dub Life Of The Flying Lizards

Here's an interesting one. You'll know the Flying Lizards for their smash interpretation of Barrett Strong's 'Money' and an even better (if less successful take on James Brown's 'Sex Machine'). But behind the post-modern fun was a group of well renowned experimental musicians led by David Cunningham. This album was recorded in 1978 but not released until 1995 and features Cunningham 'remixing' tracks recorded in Jamaica by Jah Lloyd - a fact made more difficult in that Cunningham was only given a mono master tape to work with.

The Flaming Lips
King's Mouth

King’s Mouth is The Flaming Lips fifteenth album. It is named after, and based on, Wayne Coyne’s mind-bending art installation. According to Coyne, it comes from the same nucleus as the band’s live performances. Needless to say, it’s a typically odd/beautiful mix of sounds and words. Mick Jones of The Clash keeps popping up and narrating bits of it too.

Bernard Herrmann
Marnie - From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Bernard Herrmann is perhaps a name unknown to most, but a composer who has been heard by many. He composed the music for many classic films such as Taxi Driver, Vertigo, and Citizen Kane. The music he composed for the Hitchcock film Marnie is being released as a four-track 7" by Stylotone, hopefully finally giving his name some of the credit it deserves. The sophomore LP from Ariwo arrives on Manana Records. Though the core Ariwo unit are based in London, Quasi is a globalised affair - the band claim Cuban, Iranian and Canadian heritage. Quasi features guest appearances from Joe-Armon Jones, Binker Golding and more.

Rhythm & Sound
The Versions

Repress of Rhythm & Sound’s (Basic Channel) 2003 release The Versions. Kings of dub techno Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus compiled the singles they did for Burial Mix, separating the vocals and leaving these instrumentals to do what they do best, wash over you with warm heady bass. LP on Burial Mix.

Holly Herndon
PROTO

Like it or lump it, A.I. and other forms of automation are playing increasing roles in everyday human life. It’ll be good and bad, but it won’t be stopped. Tech pop boffin Holly Herndon’s newun PROTO looks to the exciting and optimistic possibilities of ensuring such changes are on human terms. The tracks were created with assistance from her specially trained A.I., Spawn. Attabot, Spawn. **All pre-orders will go into a hat to win a test pressing or two tickets to see her live at the Barbican**

Mark Peters
Innerland

Former Engineers songwriter Mark Peters is finally releasing his first solo recordings from way back when. Treading in the footsteps of large-scale electronic dreamers Hammock and Ulrich Schnauss, Peters’ first recordings will only be available on cassette tapes. Innerland is limited to 125 copies, so act now and dream later!

Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation
Sacred Dreams

Psychedelic stalwarts Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation used to call beautiful Stockholm their home but now they've relocated to stinking London and developed round them a gang of London hotshots. It will be interesting to hear how this has affected their sound  - Josefin herself goes rambling all over the place trying to explain what is at the hub of the record. I'm still no clearer - safe to say though that we'll hear plenty of deep space rock vibes and vintage electronic pulses.

Big Supermarket
1800

Elusive Australian group Big Supermarket get their 1800 LP released outside of Oz for the first time courtesy of Tough Love (TOY, Ulrika Spacek). This is an unusual and likeable lo-fi post-punk record. The tracks on 1800 often feature the tick-tock grooves of early Parquet Courts, but there is a zaniness to the instrumentation and vocal performances that recalls Ween and Uranium Club.

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O.
Hallelujah Mystic Garden Part Two

Anyone else singing Hallelujah Mystic Garden to the tune of ‘Solidarity Forever’? Just me? Scabs the lot of you. Anyway, the bugged-out psychedelia of Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. is exactly the sort of decadence that flies in the face of the international socialist project. Following on from 2018’s Hallelujah Mystic Garden Part One, Part Two fronts up two proggy disco numbers, one of which is a new rendering of AMT fan-fave ‘Pink Lady Lemonade’. The Acid Mothers united will never be defeated.

Rob Noyes
You Are Tired / Nightmare Study

Two new pieces from Massachusetts-based musician Rob Noyes, presented over two sides of 7” vinyl. Unusually for someone with his roots in the Boston punk scene, ‘You Are Tired’ and ‘Nightmare Study’ are studies in acoustic guitar experimentation that place Noyes’ talent front-and-centre of the mix.

Transmaniacon feat. Lydia Lunch and Maya Berlin
The Strange World Of Suzie Pellet

Transmaniacon take their name from a Blue Oyster Cult song and describe themselves as 21st century schizoid people of the blue planet, which references a King Crimson song. It’s clear to see their prog influences, however, the music they make is a heavier brand of prog rock. They have teamed up with Lydia Lunch and Maya Berlin to bring to life The Strange World Of Suzie Pellet in the form a concept album. Suzie Pellet is a character created by horror/fantasy artist and novelist, Ian Miller. Transparent green/mustard half and half vinyl, limited to 300 copies of CD on New Heavy Sounds.

Shankar Jaikishan
Raga Jazz Style

Released in 1968 and never previously reissued until now, this is a rare wonder of a recording from the little-documented Indian jazz scene. Shankar Jaikishan and his ensemble do a masterful job of merging the traditional ragas of Indian classical music with Western swing jazz, and it comes out sounding frankly gorgeous. Raga Jazz Style is reissued by Outernational Sounds.

Rhythm & Sound w/ Tikiman
Music A Fe Rule

Under the name Rhythm & Sound, Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus finally saw the opportunity to showcase and develop their love for reggae. For Music a Fe Rule, they combined their affinity with dub techno (as the legendary duo Basic Channel) with the laid-back patois of Tikiman, aka Paul St. Hilaire. Classic reissue, coming straight from 1997.

Rhythm & Sound
Trace

Arguably one of my favourite press releases: 'Trace 9:00, Imprint 16:24'. Completely lacking any information whilst simultaneously giving you all the  information you need. Track name and when it's on. Brilliant. Trace is the heavy electronic and ambient release from Rhythm & Sound that's available on vinyl 12" and released on Rhythm & Sound.

Chosen Brothers / Bullwackie's All Stars / Rhythm & Sound
Mango Walk

Lloyd ‘Bullwackie’ Barnes’s Wackies are on a big reissue tip at the moment. One of the pieces to resurface in their current combing of the archives is the 1979 ‘Mango Walk (Dubwise Version)’. Helmed by the Chosen Brothers, it’s an absolute titan of a dub with bass big enough to shake windows three streets over. On the flip it’s one of those rare Rhythm & Sound jams (that’s the short-lived dub collaboration of Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus). ‘Mango Drive’ is a dub techno number par excellence with another trunk-rattling bassline. Though a Wackies original, this repress actually comes via Oswald and Ernestus's imprint.

Mikey Dread
At The Control Dubwise

New edition of some golden age dub from the legendary Mikey Dread. 1979’s At The Control Dubwise saw Dread dubbing his debut solo LP Dread At The Controls. Forged in the fires of the legendary Channel One Studios, the cast list for At The Control Dubwise runs to Augustus Pablo, Sly & Robbie and Earl Smith. On Music On Vinyl.

Jeff Resnick
SAC

Jeff Resnick’s unusual -- and rare -- 1978 record 'SAC' was a recording made to promote the School for American Craftsmen, at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Soulful, modal jazz fusion is the order of the day here; organic and packed with funky grooves with oddball / avant synths adding another layer of texture. Complete with trumpet and piano, this set swings! Sometimes tropically. Reissue LP on Outernational Sounds, for their second ever release. Groovy.

Laurel Halo
Raw Silk Uncut Wood

Following several EPs on Hippos In Tanks and Honest Jon’s and three albums and two EPs on Hyperdub, Laurel Halo releases her new LP, Raw Silk Uncut Wood on Latency. The Berlin-based American electronic musician was inspired by a score for a Metahaven film and U.S. novelist, Ursula Le Guin’s translation of the 6th-century Chinese text Tao Te Ching. This blurry, contemplative and widescreen soundscape features cello by Oliver Coates and Eli Keszler on percussion.

Rhythm & Sound
Carrier

Rhythm & Sound’s hard-to-find dub techno smash hit (as far as dub techno has smash hits, of course) finally back on wax. One of eight releases by Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus, better known as Basic Channel, under the R&S moniker. Carrier is classic EP for anybody who loves dub techno, dub reggae, and/or tape hiss, and it still sounds fresh.

Creative Arts Ensemble
One Step Out

Excellent re-press from Outernational Sounds here. The Creative Arts Ensemble was the only larger-size ensemble to emerge out of Horace Tapscott’s superb Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. Their 1981 debut LP, made in collaboration with B. J. Crowley, ran with the spiritualism of Tapscott’s ensemble while also nodding to the wildness of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago.

Alasdair Roberts, Neil McDermot & Tartine de Clous
Au Cube

This is a lovely recording of three fellas, Alasdair Roberts, Neil McDermot & Tartine de Clous singing traditional French folk harmonies, accompanied by violin (and there's a great video of the live performance on Youtube in which they wear a rollneck, Breton shirt and a scarf - I kid you not!). The recording was made at a performance Au Cube in Bristol. It's a lovely display of traditional music.
