Daily vinyl update

All today's new stuff, pre-orders, restocks, reviews, features and promos. Basically, pretty much the full rundown of everything of interest that's happened at Norman Records today.Published: Saturday 7th December, 2019

Arab Strap
Philophobia

Rarely have musicians managed to combine being horny and being sad quite so effectively. 'Philophobia' is the second album from Arab Strap who have since gone on to become Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton, and saw them explore the limits of love, lust and relationships. It is at times almost too confessional.

The Home Current
Palermo Traxx Vol 2

With creativity pouring out of him this year, Martin Jensen’s The Home Current releases its third EP of 2019 alone. Delivered on orange 12” vinyl, Palermo Traxx Vol 2 is a six-track piece of old-fashioned club euphoria, inspired by a long-defunct nightclub named Candy Jungle and memories from nights out there.

Antoni Maiovvi’s Time Precinct
British Interrail

Bristol-based producer Anton Maiof - known better under the name Antoni Maiovvi and now operating with the suffix Time Precinct - returns for his first release on Castles In Space in around four years. Released on transparent green vinyl, British Interrail is half an hour of ordered, crystalline electronica.

Incapacitants
Project Pallo '85

Incapacitants are a Japanese noise duo formed in 1981 who refer to their music as Hard Noise, borrowing from the jazz sub-genre of Hard Bop. They make music from feedback, electronics and vocals. Project Pallo ‘85 was their third statement of pure noise, released in 1985. It is now reissued as a 3LP set, remastered and housed in a grey wooden box.

Los Siquicos Litoralenos
Medianos Exitos Subtropicales Vol. 2: El Relincho Del Tiempo

Los Siquicos Litoralenos are a psychedelic band from Argentina. Medianos Exitos Subtropicales Vol. 2: El Relincho Del Tiempo is an album featuring new tracks alongside old favourites from the ban’s extensive back catalogue. If you were wondering why you couldn’t find a psych band that met your needs, look no further, they may be right here.

Ultramarine
Meditations

Electronic veterans Ultramarine limited themselves to African kalimba, guitars, analogue synths and a few other bits and bobs to create the two ambient pieces that make up new album, Meditations. It serves a companion piece to their recent album Signals Into Space. It was recorded by Andy Ramsay of Stereolab.

Vilod
The Clouds Know

You may not straight away know Vilod by name but if I told you that it was a collaboration between Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer then your ears may soon start to prick. The duo seem fascinated by the noise insects make and set about creating clicks and shards of noise and blending it with brushed, jazz-inflected drums. Darkly atmospheric wanderings.

Flørist
4 Letter Word

Canadian artist Flørist (aka Logan Sturrock) has just moved to... go on guess where.... Berlin ....joining the entirety of the electronic music community but also upping sticks from his homeland. To celebrate, he's grown a moustache and prepped his first-ever release on The Trilogy Tapes. What we have are four slabs of dark, dangerous, dubby and dreamy underground techno/house with some seriously percussive beats and gently sizzling f/x.

Andy Bey
Tuesdays In Chinatown

Tuesdays In Chinatown was originally released back in 2001 by the brilliant American jazz singer Andy Bey, who boasts a four-octave vocal range. Recorded the previous year with the same backing band who played on his previous album, its ten tracks include dazzling originals, faithful renditions of standards and poignant covers of the likes of Milton Nascimento.

Taeha Types
Mechanical Keyboard Sounds: Recordings of Bespoke and Customised Mechanical Keyboards

Keyboards. We use them every day.... I'm using one now but I've never ever thought of pimping it. In fact there is a whole scene out there of people who are enhancing their keyboards by all manner of ways to give a better feel, a better sound when you type on them. Taeha Types is the king of this scene and Trunk (who else) invite you to listen to this album featuring enhanced keyboards from the '80s and '90s and beyond. It's a whole new thing for people to get all madly obsessed by.

Agalloch
The White EP

A shiny remastered re-issue of The White EP, the 2008 release from American metal act Agalloch that saw them drop the noise and engage in pastoral, almost ambient sounds and darker strains of folk. It’s been a long-time fan favourite, despite only being released on a very limited edition CD, and at last, gets a proper vinyl release. A counterpart to The Grey EP which has also been given a new lease of life.

Bryce Miller
Monochrome Daydream

If you Google Bryce Miller you’ll find out that he’s an American Racing Driver. That’s not this Bryce Miller though. If you Google Bryce Miller, Musician, you’ll get this guy who has a new album, Monochrome Daydream. The album is a series of synth-based cinematic soundscapes, which are occasionally pierced by some dancefloor bangers. Miller earns his corn by scoring trailers to films such as Doctor Sleep, Blade Runner 2049, and Godzilla: King of Monsters, so there’s a good chance you’ve heard his work.

IDLES
A Beautiful Thing: IDLES Live at Le Bataclan

Recorded at the end of a massive, celebratory world tour in December 2018 at Paris’ prestigious Le Bataclan, IDLES tore through a cathartic set of highlights from their career so far, including covers on top of tracks from their two beloved albums Brutalism and Joy As an Act of Resistance. That set is captured on new live album A Beautiful Thing - available on 2xCD or limited edition clear multi-coloured vinyl (orange, pink or lime green).

Ween
Pure Guava

Pure Guava was the third album by odd rock band Ween and was originally released in 1992. It features perhaps their best known song in Push th' Little Daisies. Despite it coming out on a major label, it is just as out there as earlier work. The album was formed from tapes the band had made of their songs for friends.

Lydia Lunch / Rowland S. Howard
Shotgun Wedding

Christ  - imagine the meeting between these two. Can't imagine it would all be tea and scones. After a several earlier collaborations, the duo embarked on this, their first full length album with producer J.G Thirlwell of Foetus and Coil. The result is a scrapbook of dark, tortured love songs and dramatic atmospheres. This reissue also contains their cover of Lee Hazlewood's Some Velvet Morning

Alessandro Cortini
Risveglio

Good on ya Signore Alessandro Cortini who brings us Risveglio, a moody, lo-fi album of synth and electronic music. The layers of electronica loop and pop and slowly build into something which never feel contrived or bombast, it’s some moody electronica using a basic solo synth to create grainy walls of cinematic pulsating soundscapes. Not dissimilar to Kevin Drumm's work on the same label.

Rose City Band hail from Portland, Oregon and play some laid-back strums. Their eponymous debut was produced by Eric 'Ripley' Johnson of Wooden Shjips and Moon Duo and mixed by Chris Cohen. Heldon
Stand By

French outfit Heldon’s 1979 album ‘Stand By’ is being re-released on limited edition sky-blue vinyl, courtesy of Souffle Continu Records. It’s essentially a rock record, built on electronic equipment, and is filled with proggy doom, punk ‘tude and guitarist Richard Pinhas’ masterful axework.

Heldon
Heldon.6. Interface

French outfit Heldon, with guitarist Richard Pinhas at the helm, were masters of weaving together electronica and rock, resulting in minimalist, doom-laden techno and bleak, apocalyptic soundscapes. Add howling guitars, rattling electric drums and undulating synths and you’ve got a perfect prog soup.

Heldon
Un Reve Sans Consequence Speciale

Heldon’s fifth album 'Un Reve Sans Consequence Speciale', released in 1976, is being re-released on limited-edition clear purple vinyl, courtesy of Souffle Continu Records. It’s an intense record, weaving together meaty prog and industrial rock with spicy electronica, to a fiery, aggressive effect.

Ricardo Tobar
After The Movie (incl. Plaid Remix)

Chilean producer Ricardo Tobar returns to Musar Recordings with After The Movie. Tobar has been known for his emotional and atmospheric electronic music ever since he dropped El Sunset in 2007 on Border Community (James Holden). He has since released records through Correspondent and ESP Institute as well as two previous releases via Musar. This 12” also features a Plaid remix of the title track.

Lucy is Stroboscopic Artefacts label boss Luca Moratello. The artists that have had such a big impact on Luca are Donato Dozzy, Caterina Barbieri, Lucy & Klock and Xhin.

Wolfmen of Mars

Nick Walters
Active Imagination

Stepping out of the structured work of The Paradox Ensemble, Nick Walters hooks up once again with 22a to create a mini-album of spiritual avant garde jazz. Active Imagination relies on the active imaginations of the assembled musicians that Walters got together for a day of improvisation and experimentation. Jeff Guntren, Rebecca Nash and Ed Cawthorne all come along for the ride.

Marla Hansen
Dust

Marla Hansen has moved out from the shadows of Sufjan Stevens, The National and My Brightest Diamond to put herself in the spotlight with Dust. Her move to Berlin has played a part in how Dust sounds too. There’s her Americana influences mixed with the strings of the Oriel Quartett, the synths of Barabara Morgenstern and the drums of The Notwist drummer Andi Haberl.

Pia Fraus
Empty Parks

Estonian shoegazers Pia Fraus return with Empty Parks. It is an album that sees them welcoming two former members of the band back to the fold in drummer Joosep Volk and Kristel Eplik on backing vocals. The band add a bit of tension to their otherwise bright outlook here, but it’s perfectly balanced. Aided by John McEntyre in the producer’s chair who, alongside his role in Tortoise, has probably worked with one of your favourite bands at some point.

Kaja Draksler & Terrie Ex
The Swim

Terrie Ex AKA Terrie Hessels from Dutch anarcho punks The Ex and Slovenian composer and pianist Kaja Draksler are no strangers to improvisation. Their musical backgrounds are very different, but that’s what makes The Swim so good. A live improvisation between the apparent musical opposites was recorded at Cafe Oto in London and sees conventional guitar and piano mixed with toys and tools.

You've Got Foetus on Your Breath
Deaf

You’ve Got Foetus On Your Breath AKA Foetus is Australian musician JG Thirwell. He has had a number of aliases over the years: Clint Ruin Wiseblood and started the projects Manorexia, Xordox and Steroid Maximus. Deaf was originally released in 1981. It’s best described as weird noise electronic punk pop. Thirwell has collaborated with loads of artists over the years from Nick Cave to Lydia Lunch and Nine Inch Nails to Karen O.

Sonora Casino
Trompeteros

Sonora Casino were a ‘60s exotic, experimental psychedelic band from Peru. You may already be thinking after reading the opening sentence that this means their album 1972 album, Trompetoros, is a previously hard-to-get-hold-of  and highly sought after obscurity, and you’d be right. This is the first ever reissue, so sharpen your elbows and get ready for the rush.

Jonathan Richman
Ishkode! Ishkode!

Ishkode! Ishkode! was Jonathan Richman’s 17th solo album originally released in 2016. The one 6 years after O Moon Queen of Night on Earth and the one before his latest offering, 2018’s SA! It’s typical of the great man’s solo stuff - guitar, drums and lyrics that lay his beautiful soul open to us. Incidentally, Ishkode means ‘fire' in the Native American language Ojibwe.

Sprinters
Struck Gold

Sprinters are our second favourite Manchester-based band who sound a little like Real Estate (after Horsebeach). Their 2017 debut had all the jangle and twang that you might expect and surprisingly for the climate they live in, their melodies are somewhat sunny side up. For this second album they have dialled up the volume for some raucous indie rock which the press release worryingly describes as 'raunchy'.

Joe Armon-Jones
Starting Today

One of the leading lights of young British jazz in 2018, Ezra Collective member Joe Armon-Jones drops his debut solo LP via Brownswood. Starting Today is as much of a melting-pot as you’d expect. Influences of jazz, hard-bop, soul, afrobeat and plenty else show here, and the performances of Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia and others buoy this globalist, cosmopolitan record.

Middex
Scrutiny

More extremely minimal synthwave from Middex. This time it comes in the form of a good ol' cassette from Tapeworm. Scrutiny contains mixes by Oblate and Middex and was recorded with Lindsay Corstophine. Middex has previously released three records, including the album No Home, through Polytechnic Youth.

Dale Cornish
XYZ – An ABC Of The Tapeworm As Mixed By Dale Cornish

Tapeworm is ten years old - woo-hoo! They’ve decided to celebrate the big 1-0 by releasing a compilation album - but this is no ordinary compilation. XYZ – An ABC Of The Tapeworm As Mixed By Dale Cornish takes 26 tunes from the past ten years and mixes them all into one magnificent and coherent mixtape showing what the label has to offer.

Brian McOmber
Afronauts (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

You thought the space race was just between the USA and the Soviet Union? Well think again. Afronauts is a film based on real events, that saw Zambia join in on 16th July 1969, with science teacher Edward Makuka Nkoloso setting up the newly independent country’s space academy. The soundtrack, by former scientist and Dirty Projectors drummer Brian McOmber, moves between tension and euphoria using a limited amount of sounds.

Christian Löffler
Lys

What to do when you are struggling with writers block? Christian Löffler travelled to Scandinavia and visited loads of galleries. That seemed to shift the damn thing and he returns with his fourth full length album Lys. As well as galleries it was inspired by forests, running and the early morning light on his studio walls. The result is a calming work even on the more upbeat tracks and features the vocals of Swedish singer Mohna.

Luís Fernandes
Seis Peças Sintetizadas

Luís Fernandes has released two albums in 2019. In contrast to his more-or-less improvised modular synth-based album Demora, Seis Peças Sintetizadas was made using modular synth and organ but allowed to be tweaked and matured over 12 months or so. He mixes komische, industrial, classic ‘90s ambient, and Vangelis influenced sounds for delightful 40 minutes.

RIYL Tim Hecker, A Winged Victory For The Sullen, Richard Skelton and Basinski.

Russell Haswell
37 Minute Workout Vol. 2

Not content with being actress Amanda Donahoe’s other half, Russell Haswell also likes to make art in a number of different ways. Music is one of them and  37 Minute Workout Vol 2 came about following a visit to the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva and dinner with IT pioneer, Ted Nelson. The music is typically raw and unrestrained, reacting like a wild, angry cat.

The Proper Ornaments

Mission Bells by The Proper Ornaments comes a mere 9 months after their last long-player 6 Lenins. eedl
Unstored

eedl hail from Barcelona and are known for their highly rated album Everse. They play electronic music that moves from broken rhythms to swathing soundscapes and from hard-to-listen-to noise to something altogether more pleasant. 12 years on from their classic, and after seemingly hiding under a rock in the meantime, they’re back with Unstored, their second album, which has actually been in the works since 2002.

Courtney Barnett
MTV Unplugged - Live In Melbourne

Courtney Barnett is probably best known for her verbose and charming indie-rock songs but following in a long tradition of the likes of Nirvana and ..um Hootie & the Blowfish she has recorded an MTV Unplugged session. You'll need this not only because it showcases her songs in a more stripped back and vulnerable setting but because she has chosen an array of covers plus a completely unreleased track.

Mad Professor
Psychedelic Dub

Psychedelic Dub by Mad Professor was originally released in 1990. It was the 10th album in his Dub Me Crazy series which ultimately stretched to a 12 album run. As the title suggests this is pretty far out in terms of dub. Macka B, Sister Audrey and Crucial Robbie add vocals to an album which centred its theme the imprisonment of Nelson Mandela with the song Cool Runnings Mandela.

Os Noctambulos
Silence Kills

Os Noctambulos hail from Paris, France and not Sao Paulo or Lisbon as their name may lead you to believe. They play reverb-soaked ‘60s surf-psych and they do it well. Silence Kills is their latest album. It sticks to their tried and trusted formula with them being subscribers to the ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ school of thought.

Daszu
Zone of Swans/Lucid Actual + 1/2 Dativa

Daszu were another one of those groups who have been terminally overlooked despite having all the ingredients that have made other bands near household names. They were based out of Milwaukee in the years 1979 to 1983 and their post punk sound contains elements familiar to fans of This Heat, A Certain Ratio and Devo. This re-issue contains a large proportion of their recorded output and is sure to be a fascinating listen.

Sula Bassana
The Box

Phew! A six CD box set from Sula Bassana also known more prosaically as David Schmidt. The first two CDs contain his guitar only Endless Winter album which now includes three new recordings. The next two CDs are given over to Silent Music. This is, as you might imagine, very hushed music made with fairly standard instrumentation of guitar bass and piano. CD 5 contains re-issues of split albums and CD6 is all unreleased stuff. A huge project to wade through but a rewarding one.

Peggy Sue
Vices

Not the subject of that Buddy Holly song but the fourth album from the London based duo. They blend the classic songwriting nous of the 60s Brill Building lot with the amped up fuzz of '90s stalwarts such as Blur and the Breeders. Lyrically they drench their harmonies around tales of love and loss. Simples. But effective.

Low & Spring Heel Jack
Bombscare EP

Originally released in 2000 on the tiny indie Tugboat, Bombscare rather went under the radar, seeing American slowcore legends Low collaborate on four tracks with British electronic duo Spring Heel Jack. It saw the Minnesotan band at the apex of their powers, between two Steve Albini-produced classics, and Spring Heel Jack in the ascendancy just before their excellent album Masses. Now, it gets re-issued by Treader on 12” EP.

A Winged Victory For The Sullen
A Winged Victory For The Sullen

On their eponymous 2011 debut LP, A Winged Victory For The Sullen mapped out the course they have followed ever since. Everyone expected a union of Stars Of The Lid’s Adam Wiltzie and composer Dustin O’Halloran would likely produce some sort of spectral beauty, but no-one fully anticipated how richly evocative ‘A Winged Victory For The Sullen’ would be. This is cinematic and lush contemporary classical composition in the Nils Frahm vein. Peter Broderick and Hildur Guðnadóttir contribute.

Olafur Arnalds & Nils Frahm
Stare

Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm. Makes sense huh. The pair's first collaborative record Stare was released as a limited-edish 10” back on Record Store Day 2012. It contains all the stuff you’d expect it to contain - dinky lil electronics, some grandiose drones, fluffy ambiences, a general air of contemporary classical niceness. This new Erased Tapes pressing of Stare adds two extra inches on to Stare’s original vinyl size.

Round Two
New Day

Back in the 1990’s Basic Channel were reinventing the wheel by fusing club rhythms and dub textures to create what we now know as dub techno. However, BC wasn’t the only thing that the duo of Mark Ernestus and Moritz Von Oswald were up to at that point - they found time to extrapolate the style out to deep house and garage on their sporadic Main Street Records drops. ‘New Day’ (it’s vocal edit, shortened version and dub) is one of the prime examples of the style and well worth the reissue. The duo were going by number of releases for their artist names at this point, hence why the New Day EP was released under the moniker Round Two

Kendrick Lamar
To Pimp a Butterfly

I'm not sure about pimping a butterfly but Kendrick Lamar certainly knows the smooth. Sampling and influenced by the '70s greats of Parliament, Clinton (George not me) and Marvin Gaye, he twists black anger into new and danceable shapes. Challenging at times but sounds like it's going to be a decent follow up.

DIIV have produced a whole 17 songs for their hard-to-say-out-loud second album Is The Is Are. Zachary Cole Smith (formerly a Darwin Deez associate) has led his band into the fruitful territory of melodic shoegaze-tinged dream pop, which they perform with aplomb. CD or double LP on the Captured Tracks label.

The Strokes
Is This It

The Strokes’ dynamic 2001 debut Is This It, with hard-to-resist faves like Last Nite and Someday which helped the growly Julian Casablancas and co. wedge themselves firmly into the indie rock canon. The New Yorkers’ kickstarter for the 2000s indie scene, available on regular LP from Rough Trade or a limited audiophile version on Music On Vinyl.

Vampire Weekend
Modern Vampires Of The City

'Modern Vampires Of The City' was Vampire Weekend's third record and the first which saw them temper their previous carnival-like sound for something altogether a little more sober. Much hyped upon release, the album is a more mature work than seen previously with ruminations on death and adult responsibilities yet still retains an experimental air to the songwriting and recording process.

Sleaford Mods
Divide And Exit

Divide And Exit by Sleaford Mods is the follow-up to their breakthrough compilation album, Austerity Dogs. I think it’s fair to say that the Nottingham duo of Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearns, mixing beats, samples with sharp, witty lyrics and punk delivery have come up with a bit of classic. Includes the single, Tiswas.

Arab Strap

Interpol
Turn On The Bright Lights

The formidable debut from Interpol, Turn On The Bright Lights, which turns 15 this year. In that early-2000s city environment, the New York post-punk revivalists dished out generous helpings of gloom, brooding vocals and those headily dark basslines that we’re still enjoying now. LP or CD on Matador.

Cocteau Twins
Heaven Or Las Vegas

‘Heaven Or Las Vegas’ was originally released in 1990 and was to become the bands most commercially successful release, reaching Number 7 in the UK Album Charts. Numerous publications have since declared it one of the best albums of the 90s, with Pitchfork calling it “a core of ungodly gorgeous songs that is every bit as moving and relevant today as it ever was.”

The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Bravery, Repetition and Noise

One of the BJM's best! Featuring a handful of songs that have become firm fan favourites down the years ('Telegram', 'Nevertheless', 'Sailor') and another handful that deserve wider acclaim ('Just For Today', the haunting 'Leave Nothing For Sancho') this was first released in 2001 and has now been reissued on vinyl (for the first time) on Anton's own 'a' records imprint.

First Aid Kit
Ruins

Swedish sister duo First Aid Kit return with their fourth album, Ruins. Previous albums have been increasingly more confident but their first album, with tracks like "Ghost Town", will be hard to beat for many early adopters of their music. They still have it though, so expect more assured songwriting, beautiful harmonies and foot-tapping sing-a-longs.

Daughters
You Won't Get What You Want

The first Daughters LP for Ipecac Records (Mike Patton, Faith No More) finds the grindcore-turned-noise-punk band in good nick. You Won’t Get What You Want is a ten-song set that, while heavy as ever, sees Daughters expand their palette to good effect. ‘Satan In The Wait’, for instance, is a seven-minute vaudeville punk number that is both ghoulish and caustic. More straightforward rockers like ‘The Reason They Hate Me’ have something of the Pissed Jeans about them.

A Winged Victory For The Sullen
The Undivided Five

Their fifth release (but only their second official studio album) and based around the idea of the perfect fifth, A Winged Victory For The Sullen begin a new life on Ninja Tune with a bold different direction on 'The Undivided Five'. Built on their neo-classical and ambient roots, it’s by far the duo of Dustin O’Halloran and Adam Wiltzie's (Stars of the Lid) most immersive and detailed work yet.

Big Thief
Two Hands

"I have two hands" - the words of synth wizard Viv Savage. Big Thief are the latest band to do that 'record two albums at the same time' thing  - see also Beach House. So if you bought this years U.F.O.F and are still enjoying it then you can move seemlessly into its sister album. Basically it seems where U.F.O.F was wet then Two Hands is dry both in the weather conditions at recording time and in the sound produced. Here the songs were recorded live with few overdubs as the band showcased their latest batch of songs with a no frills, bone dry approach.

Chosen Brothers / Bullwackie's All Stars / Rhythm & Sound
Mango Walk

Lloyd ‘Bullwackie’ Barnes’s Wackies are on a big reissue tip at the moment. One of the pieces to resurface in their current combing of the archives is the 1979 ‘Mango Walk (Dubwise Version)’. Helmed by the Chosen Brothers, it’s an absolute titan of a dub with bass big enough to shake windows three streets over. On the flip it’s one of those rare Rhythm & Sound jams (that’s the short-lived dub collaboration of Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus). ‘Mango Drive’ is a dub techno number par excellence with another trunk-rattling bassline. Though a Wackies original, this repress actually comes via Oswald and Ernestus's imprint.

Jah B
Vampire

Latest in Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald's (aka Basic Channel) long-standing reissue campaign of releases from the legendary reggae label, Wackies. This time the headline track is Jah B's Vampire, which really stands out for its freaky and creepy guitar playing. The record also features a 'Vampire' version of the track from Wackie’s Rhythm Force.

The Chosen Brothers
Sing & Shout

Reissue of a Wackie’s classic here. Sing & Shout, the debut LP by The Chosen Brothers, originally saw daylight in 1985. Even back then this was a ten-tonne collection of roots reggae, and this new outing soups up the record with 12” versions of ‘All Things’ and ‘Dancing In The Rain’. This one's got an all-star cast - Junior Delahaye, Sugar Minott, Prince Douglas, Wayne Jarrett all feature heavily.

Rhythm & Sound
Trace

Arguably one of my favourite press releases: 'Trace 9:00, Imprint 16:24'. Completely lacking any information whilst simultaneously giving you all the  information you need. Track name and when it's on. Brilliant. Trace is the heavy electronic and ambient release from Rhythm & Sound that's available on vinyl 12" and released on Rhythm & Sound.

Sonny Sharrock
Ask The Ages

The final album from free-jazz legend Sonny Sharrock with an astonishing set of collaborators taking part in this recording, notably Pharoah Sanders Elvin Jones of the John Coltrane Quartet. Sharrock is a visionary player of the electric guitar with albums like 1969s ‘Black Woman’ a testament to how far the rules of said instrument can be stretched. ‘Ask The Ages’ proves demonstrably that Sharrock never gave up on this aim.

Yoshi Wada
Lament For The Rise And Fall Of The Elephantine Crocodile

Lament For The Rise And Fall Of The Elephantine Crocodile by Yoshi Wada is a prime piece of minimalist music which has been compared to works by the likes of Terry Riley and Pauline Olveros. It was originally released in 1982.  It involves the droning sounds of voice and bagpipes and was recorded in an empty swimming pool. A trip to Scotland ensured that the Kyoto-born, New York-based artist fell in love with the famous Scottish instrument enough to centre his debut album around it.

The Beatles
The Beatles (White Album)

The Beatles. Now there's a thing.  The White Album (initially known as just the Beatles) was the blueprint of what became known as 'the classic over indulgent double album that would have made a great single LP'. It was released 50 years ago today and still much of it sounds like Guided By Voices 'August By Cake'. This super duper re-issue isn't just a rehash of the original thing with posh packaging  - it contains the Esher demos  - a 27 track 'unplugged' demo that has only been heard by the most in the know the Beatles fans.

Fourth album from Americanophile Brits Still Corners. Slow Air represents the band exploring the vastness of America, a vastness that finds itself on this album's songs.

Various
Peaky Blinders: Original Soundtrack (Series 1-5)

I'd like the job of music chooser on Peaky Blinders. First series just pick music from Nick Cave's Greatest Hits. Second series do the same but for PJ Harvey. And on... and on. Any band out there with a dirty, bluesy sound and a decent Spotify playlist stands a chance. They get more daring though as the series wear on and the thing is... it works.  The music, though repetitive, perfectly soundtracks the grim industrial wasteland the cast shag and murder their way through. This 3LP or 2CD collection puts together all music used in the five series so far so you can swoon and imagine yourself floating in those big watery Tommy Shelby eyes as you listen.
