Daily vinyl update

All today's new stuff, pre-orders, restocks, reviews, features and promos. Basically, pretty much the full rundown of everything of interest that's happened at Norman Records today.Published: Thursday 26th November, 2020

Floating Points
Marilyn

Gorgeous classic house tune from Floating Points unleashed on vinyl at last. Gotta love those electric synth squiggles and haunting synth pads. Pure electro-jazz. It comes backed with Farukx  - seven minutes of summery electronic vibes and stellar strings. It's winter at the time of writing but there's some seriously off kilter summer sounds here to keep us warm.

Amber Run
5AM

The debut LP from Amber Run is finally out. Produced by Mike Crossey (Foals, Arctic Monkeys) you can rest assured it’s going to be an extremely catchy cut of Britrock. 5AM has everything you love about music - danceable drum beats, cozy vocal harmonies and intricate intertwined guitars, all working together towards bombastic explosions.

Nick Cave
Idiot Prayer - Nick Cave Alone At Alexandra Palace

There he is. A man alone at the piano. Sir Nick Cave. Just like every other musician, Sir Nick couldn't tour during the Covid mess - but unlike every other musician, Cave donned his blackest suit and streamed himself playing without an audience in a big, empty room at Alexandra Palace. The results were, of course, breathtaking - Cave gave a sombre performance which straddled output from his entire career. And now you can own it, under the name of 'Idiot Prayer - Nick Cave Alone At Alexandra Palace', on double-LP or double-CD.

Linkwood & Other Lands
Face The Facts

‘Face The Facts’ is the result of a collaboration between producer and DJ Nick Moore - better known as Linkwood - and Scottish artist Other Lands. Recorded just before the first Coronavirus lockdown and conducted in an improvised spirit, the record features the intricate guitar work of Other Lands laid over Linkwood’s blends of post-punk, house and electronica.

Germs
M.I.A. (The Complete Anthology)

A first-ever release on vinyl for M.I.A. (The Complete Anthology), a full career retrospective of influential punk act Germs. Originally released in 1993 on CD only, Porterhouse Records replicates the compilation in its entirety, right down to the original liner notes, making for a fitting tribute to this influential first-wave punk outfit.

Matthew Halsall
Salute to the Sun

'Salute To The Sun' is the 8th album by trumpeter, composer and Gondwana Records boss Matthew Halsall. He has a new band behind him on this one made up from some of Manchester’s best young jazz musicians, although Halsall's long-time aide Gavin Barras features again on bass. The album balances playfulness and earthiness, inspired by ambient field recordings of jungles and rainforests - represented here by various percussion instruments.

Two Rangers
Two Rangers

Following the success of their ‘Ghosts & Galaxies’ EP from earlier in 2020, dubstep outfit Two Rangers make their debut on DEEP MEDi MUSIK with another, self-titled four-track 12”. ‘Two Rangers’ is an exercise in outre dubstep, full of twitchy beats and alien soundscapes.

If I Had a Pair of Wings: Jamaican Doo Wop, Vol. 3

The third and final instalment of Death Is Not The End’s series of cassette compilations documenting the doo-wop and R&B records coming out of Jamaica in the late Fifties / early Sixties. ‘If I Had A Pair Of Wings: Jamaican Doo Wop, Vol. 3’ provides a snapshot of the island’s burgeoning independent scene transforming cover versions of American singles into proto-reggae diamonds.

Higher Intelligence Agency
Freefloater

A remastered reissue of ‘Freefloater’, the 1995 sophomore album from Bobby Bird’s Higher Intelligence Agency. With this new edition overseen by Stefan Betke (Pole), the overhaul has revealed previously hidden depths and details to 'Freefloater', giving new life to what was already a minor classic in the IDM genre.

Bruno Nicolai
Geminus

Here we have a reissue of Bruno Nicolai’s music for ‘Geminus’, an Italian television mini-series originally broadcast in 1969. On his diverse and eclectic score, Nicolai pulled together influences from contemporaneous pop to experimental/progressive rock styles. Features extensive liner notes from film critics Francesco Cesari and Roberto Curti.

Giuliano Sorgini
Occulto

‘Occulto’ represents another dive into the archives of Italian film soundtrack composer Giuliano Sorgini. Selected from a range of different, low budget horror movies made in the 1970s, these atmospheric DIY scores, performed and recorded entirely by Sorgini at his Cat & Fox Studio in Rome, show the invention that often comes from necessity and restraint.

Fat Tony
Exotica

Although he sounds like the sort of bloke who might have sold you a dodgy used car, Fat Tony is a Houston based regular in the rap game with appearances on ASAP Rock mixtapes and on Vice TV. His latest is an eclectic, ambitious work where a scan through the list of influences sees Kenny Rodgers rubbing shoulders with Outkast rubbing shoulders with Scritti Politti. How can this not be interesting?

The High Water Marks
Ecstasy Rhymes

‘Ecstasy Rhymes’ is the first proper album from Kentucky-via-Oslo outfit The High Water Marks in over a decade. Associated with the Elephant 6 collective - lead singer Hilarie Sidney was one of its co-founders - The High Water Marks' latest record is laden with infectious, quirky pop hooks and warm, lavish arrangements.

XTC
Drums and Wires

XTC are reissuing many of their classic albums at the moment. 'Drums & Wire' was the famed post-punkers' third LP and it was originally released in 1979. The record was produced by Steve Lillywhite and spawned the iconic hit 'Making Plans For Nigel'. This reissue has been mastered by Jason Mitchell with Andy Partridge watching over to make sure he did it right.

JB Dunckel
Été 85 (Original Soundtrack)

A summer love story set in a Normandy port town that recalls the acclaimed 'Call Me By Your Name', Été 85 (trans: ‘Summer of 85’) is a film directed by François Ozon. The film features an original score from JB Dunckel, which isn't a million miles away from the stuff he makes as part of Air, and comes bolstered by the inclusion of The Cure’s ‘Inbetween Days’.

Holding Our Breath

'Holding Our Breath' was the third EP released by celebrated shoegazers Slowdive. It preceded their debut album, 1991's 'Just For A Day', by a couple of months and features the album track ‘Catch The Breeze’ along with three other tunes - fan favourite ‘Shine’, the atmospheric ‘Albatross’ and a cover of the Syd Barrett song ‘Golden Hair’.

Black Sabbath
Vol 4 (Super Deluxe)

‘Vol. 4’ by Black Sabbath was originally released in 1972. It saw the Heavy Metal pioneers slug out some chugging metal in the form of the LP’s only single ‘Tomorrow’s Dream’ and the riff-tastic ‘Supernaut’ alongside the ballad ‘Changes’. This ‘Super Deluxe’ version comes as a 5LP or 4CD set and includes outtakes remixed for this release by Steven Wilson, a live recording form the 1973 ‘Vol.4’ tour and fascinating snippets of studio dialogue.  Essential for fans of heavy metal and classic rock.

The Fall
Perverted By Language

Perverted By Language was the Fall's sixth album and the first to feature Brix Smith in any capacity. Mark E Smith's former wife was instrumental in the later smoothing out of their post-punk clank but at this stage it is still a challenging listen. There's plenty of classic the Fall moments here though from legendary longform opener Eat Y'self Fitter to the magnificently taut guitar entanglements of I Feel Voxish.

Electric Wizard
Dopethrone

Electric Wizard's 'Dopethrone' is a masterpiece of stoner and doom metal. The Dorset group take Black Sabbath's slow-and-low template and run all the way down the psychedelic rabbit hole and straight into the gates of hell with it. The ridiculously low-tuned guitars are steeped in devilish herb smoke and thick layers of fuzzed-out fog, whilst their wall-of-sound riffs lumber with monolithic intensity alongside mammoth percussion which fall like asteroids hitting earth. Jus Oborn’s funereal vocals sound as if he was caught within a bad trip, augmenting the demonic album with a shade of psychedelic brilliance.⁣ 'Dopethrone' is the perfect marriage of doom, sludge, stoner and psychedelic rock and is an essential in any collection. The album art depicting an intoxicated Lucifer pretty much sums up the record!

Biosphere
Substrata

Fans of isolationist ambient music have reason to rejoice as Substrata, widely regarded to be an ambient classic, is reissued on double 180gr vinyl and CD. Linking the slow moving, icy soundscapes of Thomas Köner with the distant rhythms of Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2, the album has become a significant source of inspiration for a new generation of ambient producers and those seeking musical experiences on the fringes of consciousness.

Pangaea
In Drum Play

Pangaea is the recording name for Hessle Audio co-founder Kevin McAuley. In Drum Play features skeletal techno which still bears the intensity of rave that has set maverick experimentalist McAuley apart over the last decade. The album mixes studio craft with the in-your-face sound of his club work to create a powerful and visceral yet cerebral work.

Yung Lean
Unknown Memory

Melancholic hip-hop with a leftfield twist from eighteen year old Yung Lean. Debut album Unknown Memory blends off-kilter autotuning and sombre synths, all wrapped up in a distinctly digital aesthetic that could have only come out of the Youtube generation. Dark as a Swedish winter.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
Now I Got Worry

'Now I Got Worry', alongside 'Orange' is regularly classed as being the best album from the Jon Spencer camp. It's a 90s update on the blues and sets off where The Gun Club left off and where early White Stripes were just about to begin. Raucous blues riffs meet punk and garage rock simplicity to shape sixteen tracks of super-fun and energetic music.

Boards of Canada
Hi Scores

We’re always here for Boards Of Canada, and Hi Scores is a release that really shows off why that is. As only the duo’s second release, this 1996 number dates from when people where only just waking up to the BOC sound, and yet it contains such infinite wonders as ‘Turquoise Hexagon Sun’ and the deeply melancholy ‘Everything You Do Is A Balloon’. 2014 reissue edition.

The Beta Band
The Three EPs (20th Anniversary Remaster) [Deluxe Edition]

Noted for *that* moment in High Fidelity when the guy in the store says "let's sell some records" and puts a Beta Band track on and people start wandering up to the counter to find out what it is. It's a reminder that the early the Beta Band was a good thing - their reputation is based on these three early EPs. The fact that they subsequently disappeared down a rabbit warren of their own making is, in time, starting to be forgotten.

The Ex
Catch My Shoe

The Ex are a agit punk/whatever band out of Holland who have been going for seemingly eternity. Catch My Shoe was in fact their 25th album and despite having a new singer continues with their brooding post-punk and krautrock sound that has drawn comparisons to the likes of the Fall. A true cult band with a terrifyingly large but mostly excellent back catalogue to wade through.

Todd Terje
It's Album Time

Coming ten full years after his debut single you can't accuse Todd Terje of rushing this collection. He probably spent most of it saving up for a gentleman's tailored suit for guest star Bryan Ferry and coming up with buoyant disco jams that feel like a grab bag of things that sound a bit like Daft Punk, Royskopp or Air. Hopefully it won't be another ten years before he unleashes the inevitably titled It's Second Album O'Clock.

Mew
And The Glass Handed Kites (Expanded)

The Danish band who straddle arena rock and indie pop once released this really great record called 'And The Glass Handed Kites', and it was dreamy: it veered towards the prog side of alt-rock but swung mostly with its heart. Reissued for its 15th anniversary and expanded to include ten additional tracks.

The Coral
The Coral

When Liverpudlians the Coral first burst onto the scene we were promised something like a cross between the La's and Captain Beefheart. The reality was somewhat more prosaic but their psychedelic take on the guitar pop of the era was more colourful and explorative than their peers. Their self-titled debut was a sea-faring classic gaining them a Mercury Music Prize nomination and a large following that has stuck by them to this day.

Madlib
Shades Of Blue

A lovely album where prime beat maker Madlib was given the run of the Blue Note catalogue and was pretty much told 'do what you like'. Which as you might possibly be able to imagine was to use old sounds to create new and exciting shapes. Here, Madlib reworks sounds by the likes of Donald Byrd and Horace Silver to stunning effect. A true hip-hop visionary.

BGM is the extremely influential 1981 release from Japanese synth-pop eccentrics Yellow Magic Orchestra. Ryuichi Sakamoto’s gurgling synthesizers mesh with motorik drum machines and the catchiest melodies you have ever heard. This reissue from Music on Vinyl comes on 180 gram wax and the first 1000 pressed are also on transparent vinyl. The dense pop-experimentalism of this record is still shocking.

Rage Against The Machine
Rage Against The Machine

‘Rage Against the Machine’ is the eponymously titled debut studio album by American rap metal band Rage Against the Machine. The album was originally released on November 3, 1992. It’s contains the tracks ‘Killing In The Name Of’, ‘Bombtrack’, ‘Bullet In The Head’ and ‘Take The Power Back’. It’s THAT Rage Against The Machine album.

Arcade Fire
Funeral

They used to actually be a phenomenal band and Funeral is all the proof you need. Full of gang chants and guitar twitches, big band fever and Springsteen suburbia, the Arcade Fire made a hopeful and triumphant rock record that fully deserved to be loud. With a handful of indie rock's best tunes on it, it traversed a whole lot of death and even a bit of romance -- "Crown of Love" is still their best, most heartfelt moment.

The Wedding Present
Bizarro

The ever-prolific pioneers of UK indie, The Wedding Present, are embarking on an extensive reissue campaign, releasing five albums, two compilations and an EP from the band’s ‘80s and 90’s output, all of which are expanded multi-disc sets crammed with bonus material, extensive sleeve notes, artwork and general Weddos emphemera. Most synonymous for their familiar depiction of relationships using acerbic wit, frontman David Gedge is a virtuoso when it comes to the bittersweet love song. Originally released in 1989, ‘Bizarro’ is the second LP released by The Wedding Present and the first to be released on a major label. Usually, this would hint towards a band on the cusp of selling out, but instead, ‘Bizarro’ sees The Wedding Present hone their craft and toughen their formula as opposed to giving in to convention. The result was a career-defining record made up of fluctuating tempos and moods, establishing the band’s quintessential euphoric take on pop.

The Budos Band
Burnt Offering

'Burnt Offering' is the newest record from that ten-piece that just wants to have fun: the Budos Band. Riffs on riffs front this record of hazy psych-rock and proud metal worship, though the band retain their jazz and Afrobeat influences and pack their tunes with all the things that make them more like Fela Kuti. A weird, wonderful hybrid of musical party makes up 'Burnt Offering'.

Stars Of The Lid
Gravitational Pull vs The Desire for an Aquatic Life

Gravitational Pull vs. the Desire for an Aquatic Life is, I have to say, a pretty fantastically appropriate title for a Stars of the Lid album. Captures the elemental, slow-moving feel of their drone compositions, not to mention their profound beauty. This is their second album, from 1996, on Kranky Records.

Prefab Sprout
I Trawl The Megahertz

I Trawl The Megahertz was originally released as a solo album by Prefab Sprout's  Paddy McAloon in 2003 but was pretty much ignored by everyone apart from us Sprout obsessives. Shame because it is a incredible work...the album is largely instrumental and spoken word, featuring some his most experimental work, such as the 22 minute title track and one track that, according to McAloon, sounds like a depressed Van McCoy. Now that it won't do the brand too much harm, it is now being issued as a Prefab Sprout album. 2LP (featuring an etched side) and CD on Sony.

It was released on the same day as a rather marvellous EP, Take A Run At The Sun, which featured in the Alison Anders film, Grace Of My Heart. Even A Tree Can Shed Tears: Japanese Folk & Rock 1969-1973

This Light In The Attic compilation looks rather fantastic, historicising folk music from the tail-end of 1960s Japan. Cited as a period of growing political and cultural action amongst the country's younger demographic, Even A Tree Can Shed Tears arguably acts as a retrospective to music that was at its time unprecedented, with these artists seeking their own, particular sound through folk music.

The Durutti Column
Obey The Time

Factory Benelux could probably be re-issuing the Durutti Column records until the end of time if they so wished. This time it's the turn of their 8th album Obey the Time. The album saw leader Vini Reilly explore electronic textures influenced by the acid house explosion of the time. There's an extra disc of live recordings from a show at Whitworth Hall in 1990.

Self Discovery For Social Survival (The Original Soundtrack)

Self Discovery for Social Survival is a cool movie about surfing, with a more than cursory crossover with cool alternative music. Allah Las, an LA psych-rock band, both star in the film and provide a fair portion of its soundtrack, as heard here. As well as their excellent survey vibes, this collection also includes weird and wonderful new material from Peaking Lights, Connan Mockasin, Dungen and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. Out on Mexican Summer.

Stick In The Wheel
Hold Fast

Stick in the Wheel are a London-based folk duo whose traditionally melodic yet powerful delivery is apposite for their political and socially aware lyrics. Hold Fast follows 2018’s Follow Them True and is their third album. It arguably comes at a time when their political punch could be just what we need.

The Heshoo Beshoo Group
Armitage Road

A highly prized collector’s item since it was originally released back in 1970, Armitage Road was the sole studio recording from The Heshoo Beshoo Group. A critique of the apartheid regime in their native South Africa set to an inventive fusion of American and African jazz traditions, it now gets hugely overdue re-issue on vinyl via We Are Busy Bodies.

Jim White
Misfit's Jubilee

Jim White usual approach is to write songs that ponder the darker side of life in the Southern States of the USA. On Misfit’s Jubilee, his 8th album, things seem a little more optimistic than usual -  as lead single Sum of What We’ve Been will attest. Don’t let that fool you though, his tales of misfits and outcasts are still lurking around the corner. On Loose.

Bellowhead
Hedonism

Literally no social distancing at all on that sleeve, though this album was made in 2010, when the world was a dazzling golden thing and we had little idea of what was to come. Certainly with an eleven-piece line up it was hard for Bellowhead to stay apart from each other at shows, and it was this - alongside their ace musicianship - which helped 'Hedonism' become the highest-selling independent folk album of all time. This tenth-anniversary reissue comes on red and black marble vinyl with liner notes from each member of the band.

Tangerine Dream
The Sessions III

‘The Sessions III’ is the third album of improvisations by kosmische music icons Tangerine Dream. In their latter years the band's live performances have returned to their founding principles of spontaneity, rendering passages which bear little resemblance to their studio recordings but remain thrilling and unique nonetheless. This series of albums picks out the best of these in-concert noodlings.

Catherine Wheel
Ferment

Coming in at a solid no 23 in Pitchfork's Top Shoegaze albums, Music on Vinyl have had the good sense to issue Catherine Wheel's now classic 'Ferment' on vinyl. It contains several despatches of noisy shoegaze which is clear cut and rocky rather than woozy. Perhaps closer to Ride than anything else the band used thrashy guitars to create great thumping melodies to leap around your house to when the baby is asleep.

Hans Zimmer
Dunkirk (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Hans Zimmer composed ‘Dunkirk (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)’ using a Shepard tone - what’s that you ask? Well, it’s ‘an auditory illusion consisting of a superposition of sine waves separated by octaves’. He then blended this with a synthesized recording of director Christopher Nolan’s pocket watch to create the war film's incredibly tense and gripping score.
