The Books
Thought For Food

Back in the early 2000’s the whole ‘post-genre’ thing was starting to kick off. We’d had The Avalanches’ Since I Left You, Gorillaz were the cool new thing and Animal Collective’s golden period was just around the corner. A less well-known but no less important addition to the stable was The Books’ 2002 debut LP Thought For Food. The manner in which the duo of Nick Zammuto and Paul De Jong applied the cut-and-paste electronics of Oval to a sort of alien-folk songwriting style was, and remains, highly original. Following on from its appearance in scores of those ‘Best of the Decade’ lists, Thought For Food now gets the reissue treatment courtesy of Temporary Residence.

Embryo
Opal

Another re-issue from Embryo the German jazz/world fusion band who expanded minds in the early 1970s. This was their debut album released in 1970 which caused none other than Miles Davis to describe them as "crazy creative musicians playing really weird stuff". Forget your kraut rock jams, this is heavy psychedelia and exploratory jazz-rock with eastern themes.

Lambchop
Nixon

Ah Nixon. The highpoint in the varied career of this Nashville million piece led by Kurt Wagner. Nixon was a glorious romp through the back roads of neon soul with surprising nods to Al Green and Curtis Mayfield -  a beautiful lamp lit album, moving at slow pace with Wagner's idiosyncratic wordplay front and centre.

Arcade Fire
Funeral

They used to actually be a phenomenal band and Funeral is all the proof you need. Full of gang chants and guitar twitches, big band fever and Springsteen suburbia, the Arcade Fire made a hopeful and triumphant rock record that fully deserved to be loud. With a handful of indie rock's best tunes on it, it traversed a whole lot of death and even a bit of romance -- "Crown of Love" is still their best, most heartfelt moment.

Thee Oh Sees
The Cool Death of Island Raiders

Thee Oh Sees reissue thee 2006 LP(ee) The Cool Death Of Island Raiders. While John Dwyer et al are garage-punk royalty nowadays, it appears that back in the mid-2000’s they were more interested in mucking about with drones than crafting short blasts of scuzz-rock. While the bones of the band’s later style is apparent in the freak-folk tracks here (think Animal Collective-meets-Jay Reatard) there is also a fair whack of The Flaming Lips to The Cool Death Of Island Raiders.

The Raincoats
The Raincoats

Spindly post-punk heaven here from The Raincoats. The album was both important for its DIY spirit but also for the fact that it was made by four women in the then male dominated music industry. The album fell under the radar until Kurt Cobain mentioned it as one of his favourite records and since then has taken on legendary status and influenced scores of musicians. Re-issued from original sources for this luxury revamp that no home should be without.

Wire
154

This is Wire's third album and was an icy example of the sort of dark art rock that was around at the time. There was however something special about Wire. They never were content to sit still and so each album is a development on the last. Certainly this is one of their albums that could be considered a masterpiece. Now comes with loads of bonus demo material and B sides.

Moebius & Plank
Material

The second collaborative LP between Dieter Moebius and Conny Plank gets reissued via Bureau B (Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Faust). 1981’s Material builds on the work of predecessor Rastakraut Pasta (yikes), bending Krautrock and experimental electronics into intriguing new forms. Everything from dub to disco to Vangelis-like synth compositions play into the Moebius & Plank aesthetic.

Sunny Day Real Estate
LP2

Sunny Day Real Estate were almost the perfect emo band. They were gritty, noise, angry, tuneful  but were led by the magnificent stretchy voice of Jeremy Enigk which ensured that they were something way more than just angry young men thrashing guitars about. LP2 is (of course) their second album often known as The Pink Album and is here re-issued on Sub Pop for you to get all angsty to all over again.

Pulp
Separations

Separations was Pulp's 1992 era pre success album and their second full length after 1987's Freaks. The first half of the record is a sort of fledgling version of what you might expect from the Common People hitmakers while the B side dabbles in acid house and electronica. It took them a while to reach mainstream success but Separations was another of their stopping off points on their way to glory.
