Low
Things We Lost In The Fire

On Low albums, the heart flutters and then stops altogether, the hushed harmonies of Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker slowing into nothingness -- whether over delicate strums or ascendent and doomy rock fanfare. Things We Lost In the Fire is arguably the band's opus, offering each iteration of their sound at its most emotional devastating.

Circle
Meronia

The first ever album from Circle, which forced the world to take note of their heavily driving Finnish krautrock sound. Meronia was first released in 1994, and consequently lasts for an hour and a quarter. You can pick up the CD or the vinyl version, although be aware that only vinyl-getters will hear the last bonus track… Joint release by Ektro, Full Contact and Svart.

Okko
Sitar & Electronics

Cosmic psych trips abound in this electronically infused sitar classic. Okko was a well regarded virtuoso in his time and he lays it down on the Beatles' "Day In The Life", plus six of his own compositions. Although some of the grooves can become a tad repetitive, they may be just what you're searching for in this kind of record. "Ganges Delta" and "East Indian Traffic" have a more upbeat rock sensibility. "Himalaya Highway" and "Shivas Lullaby" offer a more meditative take on the '60s pop/Indian Classical music crossover sub-genre.

Deathprod
Treetop Drive

The early works of Norwegian experimentalist Deathprod (aka Supersilent member Helge Sten) here receive some attention from Smalltown Supersound’s reissues division. Treetop Drive is an early 90’s work composed using Sten’s ‘Audio Virus’ array, spinning twisted samples and unruly electronics into a satisfyingly fried-sounding whole. LP reissue with remastered audio.

Blur
Parklife

'Parklife’ is, of course, the monstrously successful Blur album from the heady days of 1994. Along with those first two Oasis LPs and Pulp's ‘Different Class’ it is generally vaunted as one of Britpop’s definitive albums, and heard today it certainly acts like a capsule from a different era, one where doing a passable Cockney accent was a passport to a whole career. Seriously though, 'Parklife' actually is good - songs like ‘To The End’ and ‘End Of A Century’ show off genuine songwriting chops, and who could resist shaking leg ‘Girls And Boys’ when it comes on at the indie disco? You love a bit of it.

Harald Grosskopf
Synthesist (40th Anniversary Edition)

Synthesist by Harald Grosskopf is a classic German electronic music milestone originally released in 1980. The former Ashra drummer had his brain blown by LSD and started to venture further and further into electronic territories until he recorded this album completely on his own. It is comparable by fellow explorers Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze and has been re-pressed on yellow vinyl including a second disc on interpretations by the likes of Steve Baltes, Thorsten Quaeschning and Kreidler.

The Smiths
The Queen is Dead

'The Queen Is Dead' is thought by many to be the Smiths greatest achievement. Not for me, nothing with 'Vicar In A Tutu' on it should ever be considered a classic. However it does contain many of their greatest moments, the title track, 'There is a Light....' and 'Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others' to name but three. The Smiths at their confident best just before things started to go slightly wrong.

Skull Snaps
Skull Snaps

Despite what the cover may lead you to believe, Skull Snaps were a soul/funk act. The band were an enigma, no one knew who they were and this self-titled LP was their only one. What you’d probably like to know is that it contains the track It’s A New Day, the drum intro of which has been sampled by DJ Shadow, Digable Planets and Eric B & Rakim, among others. That makes it a fairly essential purchase, doesn't it? Reissue LP and CD on Mr. Bongo with sleeve notes by Anton Spice.
