Stereolab
Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage In The Milky Night (Expanded Edition)

'Cobra And Phases Group Play Voltage In The Milky Night' is one of Stereolab's most collaborative releases ever, featuring members of a variety of other kindred spirit post-rock/experimental acts, from Tortoise to Jim O'Rourke.  It's being reissued by 1972 Records, putting Stereolab's most controversial record on display once again. Recommended for those who want to hear what rock critics of the late 1990s hated and what Stereolab fans barely blinked an eye at: weird, often kinda twee, occasionally jazzy, always Stereolab.

Michael Prophet
Serious Reasoning

Another reggae great and another classic plate rescued from collector obscurity, this guy is well loved but relatively underrated. Along with Yabby who he collaborated with, this is another burner from around 1980 that has long needed such a dust-off! Michael George Haynes is his real name. A true Prophet!

MC5
Back In The USA

'Back In The USA' was actually the debut album from proto-punks MC5, released in 1970 and full of hard rock fury complemented with the good vibe hooks of pop outfits like the Beach Boys. The record had a lasting influence on early punk rock, and all that greasy hair probably influenced the Strokes at some point. 'Back In The USA' features a cover of rock 'n' roll performer Chuck Berry's song of the same name.    Tracks: Tutti-Frutti Tonight Teenage Lust Let Me Try Looking At You High School Call Me Animal The American Ruse Shakin' Street The Human Being Lawnmower Back In The USA

Fripp & Eno
The Equatorial Stars

You know what these two are like: they really love stars. King Crimson frontman Robert Fripp and ambient music saint Brian Eno released their collaborative effort 'Evening Star' back in 1975, a tranquil soundscape that helped popularise drone way back when. It took them thirty years to make another record together, but 'The Equatorial Stars' was the result, another quietly distilled foray into ambient.

Colored Balls
Heavy Metal Kid

This is a true proto-punk slab of dynamite, right up there with similar recordings by the likes of the MC5 and the Pink Fairies. Featuring a mix of growling punkers (the title track, 'Private Eye'), '50s rockers (a cover of '(You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care', 'Need Your Love'), hi-energy boogie ('Do It', 'Dance To The Music'), cosmic rock ('Back To You', 'Metal Feathers') and even a ballad in there, it's an eclectic mix held together by its outlaw sense of purpose. Along with, is sound of the great Sharpie stomp of 1970s Melbourne.

The Walker Brothers
Nite Flights

One of the most unusual records of all time. Nite Flights was then forgotten '60s combo The Walker Brothers 1978 comeback album. It was split into contributions by each band member with Scott Walker getting just four songs. The album is worth buying just for those four songs as they pave the way for his future more experimental work. Its title track invents everything that happened in the early '80s basically. Astonishingly unusual.

Funkadelic
The Electric Spanking Of War Babies

Originally released in 1981, 'The Electric Spanking Of War Babies' was one Funkadelic's most uncompromising and controversial records. The title is a reference to the Vietnam War, U.S imperialism and the Baby Boomer generation. The reissue replicates the intended artwork which was originally censored by Warner Brothers.

Sufjan Stevens
Greetings From Michigan

The time Sufjan first came to some kind of international prominence was with this wonderful sprawl of a record that was the first of his supposed 50 albums about US states. That didn't happen but this and Illinois were more than enough. Intricate, literate song craft, beautiful folk melodies and my favourite lyric of all time "and I've seen my wife, at the K-Mart, in strange ideas, we live apart".

Yellowman
Nobody Move Nobody Get Hurt

Reissue of important 80’s dancehall on Greensleeves. Rather than anything to do with We Are Scientists, Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt is sterling material from Jamaican original Yellowman. The title track is especially great, you pretty much need it. And how could you not want that cover starting out at you from your mantelpiece?
