Sufjan Stevens
Songs For Christmas

How nice it would be to live in Sufjan world. Each year around the festive season he'd gather round with friends to make a Christmas EP. He'll be there in a massive jumper singing away. Heartwarming. Well this tradition went on for a few years and now you can get all the yuletide fruits on this box set of all the songs. Sufjan's folky and melancholy tones are just perfect for Christmas listening. Let it sleet.

Kindness
World You Need A Change Of Mind

The press release describes this re-issue as long awaited but also notes that the original album was released in 2012. That's just three years ago - not that long. Anyway it showcases ol' longhair before he disappeared completely up his own arse. He's at his best here with his brand of smooth updates on all those '70's and '80's soul smoochers you love so much. Slinky.

Son Volt
Trace

If Wilco was Jeff Tweedy’s response to the break-up of Uncle Tupelo, bandmate Jay Farrar’s was to form Son Volt. Trace was the first album under the name, and it is something of a landmark of alt-country. It is reissued here as a deluxe edition, the CD version including a whole live show on a second disc.

Bruce Haack
Haackula

This reissue represents the first ever vinyl outing for Haackula, a cult favourite among electro enthusiasts. Bruce Haack originally made this record in 1978, but the music was thought too weird and dark to release. This release has the full original album, plus his 1982 smash tune ‘Party Machine’. On Telephone Explosion, 1000 copies.

Starsailor
Love Is Here

Love is Here was originally released in 2001 when there was a post-britpop boom in singer/songwriter-type bands such as Coldplay and David Gray. Starsailor, named after a Tim Buckley album, very much fit in with that crowd. The band won many fans for their earnest songs and the strong voice of vocalist James Walsh.

James Cotton
Live At Antone’s Nightclub

Some classic blues here from James Cotton, a hardy veteran of feeling a bit sad and singing about it. Live At Antone’s Nightclub is just that, a classic live show from Cotton and his ensemble on energetic form. Reissued by New West, both CD and LP editions are packed in a luxuriously embossed leatherette sleeve.

Michael Yonkers
Grimwood

Reissue of Michael Yonkers debut record, first released in 1973 (and recorded in 1969). Grimwood sounds like a classic folk record from that period, but there is a certain oddity to it as well. Yonkers’ vocals waver with an uncertain vibrato, and his songs are an intimate direct line to his mind. Re-pressed by the Nero’s Neptune label.

Current 93
Swastikas For Noddy / Crooked Crosses For The Nodding God

Current 93, the perpetual post-industrial rabble rousers, have a record out named Swastikas For Noddy / Crooked Crosses For The Nodding God. Take that, childhood loves! David Tibet has no time for your sentimentalism. This 1986 double album is a classic Current 93 release, perfectly reissued by The Spheres.

Dennis Brown
Just Dennis

Famous reggae record label Trojan is treating us to yet another reissue. This time it’s Just Dennis, the 1975 classic by Dennis Brown. Bustling with songs of protest and deliverance, the record is still filled with positive energy. Of course, the good folks at Sanctuary took the effort to press it on 180gr vinyl.

John Hulburt
Opus III

John Hulbert’s Opus III is a remarkable work of solo acoustic guitar, originally released in 1972 as a private pressing. Naturally it attracted little to no attention, but it’s been picked up since, and this reissue on Tompkins Square gives everyone a chance to inhabit these lively, detailed instrumentals.

The Doubling Riders
Garama

The Doubling Riders originally released Garama in 1991. The album is a strange beast: for the most part it is more or less ambient music, composed out of quiet, leisurely synths and some distant vocal samples. The inspiration is apparently the ancient kingdom from which the record takes its name. Reissued by Time Released Sound.

Self
Gizmodgery

Gizmodgery was first released in the year 2000, and it sounds at least as fresh now. Self are quite rightly proud of having recorded the whole of this LP with... toy instruments designed for children! The album sounds remarkably developed with that in mind, though it certainly has an infant’s joy as well. Reissued on blue vinyl by El Camino.

Krokodil
Sweat and Swim

A rare example of Swiss Kraut-Prog, Krokodil made a few albums prior to Sweat And Swim, their 1973 final effort. This album is a double, and fits a whole lot of hard rocking action into that space, tempered by touches that might be called freaky. The feeling is of a vehicle driving relentlessly forwards, threatening to veer off at any moment. 2LP Reissue.

Faith No More
The Real Thing

Faith No More's 'The Real Thing' saw them break through in the UK and sow the seeds for rock/rap with massive tunes such as 'Epic', 'Falling To Pieces' and 'War Pigs'. Buzz Osbourne of the Melvins blames them for sports metal clowns Limp Bizkit. He's got a point.

Beth Orton
Daybreaker

High time for some reissues of Beth Orton albums don’t you think? The Rhino label think so, and thus they have pressed to (180g) vinyl this album, along with Comfort of Strangers. Daybreaker scored into the Top Ten when it was first released in 2002, and it finds Orton in a lounging folktronica mood.

Beth Orton
Comfort Of Strangers

High time for some reissues of Beth Orton albums don’t you think? The Rhino label think so, and thus they have pressed to (180g) vinyl this album, along with Daybreaker. Comfort of Strangers was recorded with the help of Jim O’Rourke as producer, so you just know that every little corner of these compositions shines through clearly.

Jock Scot
My Personal Culloden

Certified weirdo, rock poet, and recent British Sea Power collaborator Jock Scot made My Personal Culloden in 1997, when it was first released on Postcard Records. Mudhoney
Since We've Become Translucent

Since We’ve Become Translucent was Mudhoney’s 2002 effort, a typically sludged-out guitar-fest. Arguably they had moved out of the garage a little by this point, but there is no disputing that this is still firmly a Mudhoney record: lyrics are snarled out, and guitar pedals remain firmly pressed down. The reissue LP is courtesy of Sub Pop.

Seaweed
Actions and Indications

Seaweed are eighties northwest punks, formed by singer Aaron Stauffer (Spook & the Zombies) and best friend Clint Werner (guitar) who then recruited Wade Neal on guitar, John Atkins on bass, and drummer Bob Bulgrien. Seaweed played over a thousand shows throughout the Pacific Northwest as well as recording five pop punk albums from 1989 to 1999 including the powerhouse 'Actions And Indications', originally recorded in 1999.

Spooner Oldham
Pot Luck

Spooner Oldham released his one and only solo album back in 1972. The man wrote songs and played keys for a wide variety of classic soul artists, but this is the only opportunity to hear him take centre stage. God knows why, as he sounds very comfortable there. Pot Luck is fully remastered and reissued by Light In The Attic.

Throbbing Gristle
Heathen Earth

Reissues of Throbbing Gristle’s live album, which isn’t really a live album but an in-studio performance in front of four mates (typical Gristle obfuscatory awkwardness). What that does mean though is that the Throbbers have the sound just the way they want it. Includes some actually-live bonus tracks. On Mute.

Thee Headcoatees
Sisters Of Suave

Thee Headcoatees, fronted by Holly Golightly, were formed by Kent’s favourite son, Billy Childish as the backing band for his group, Thee Headcoats. Their songs were mostly written by Billy Childish. They disbanded in 1999 and Sisters of Suave was their 8th and final album. Sisters of Suave is available on red coloured vinyl LP and CD.

Midnight
Into The Night

Midnight were a small-town teenage group operating in the mid-to-late seventies. They had strong chops for ones so young, taking on hard rock tropes and bringing them to suburban Illinois. Into The Night is one of the few recordings still actually in circulation, and Drag City are doing their bit to make it that bit more available than before with this reissue.

Zbigniew Preisner
Dekalog (Le Decalogue)

Polish film score composer Zbigniew Preisner is best known for his collaborations with influential Polish director and screenwriter Krzysztof Kieslowski for the ‘Three Colours’ film trilogy. This is the score to their first collaboration together, Kieslowski's 1989 television series The Decalogue, a series of ten, one hour films set in present day Poland, based on the ten commandments.
