Lamb
5

Lamb released 5 (suitably enough, their fifth album) in 2011, the first recorded results of their reformation after a half-decade away. People seemed to like it, so it is now reissued in deluxe style by Music On Vinyl, who have pressed up 1000 copies to 180g silver vinyl. This version also includes two bonus tracks, one featuring Damien Rice.

Okkervil River
Black Sheep Boy (10th Anniversary Edition)

A pretty special collection here. A 3CD or 3LP release to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Black Sheep Boy by Okkervil River. In the set comes Black Sheep Boy, Black Sheep Boy Appendix and a previously unreleased album made six months before Black Sheep Boy came out; There Swims a Swan. It’s a great homage to a band creating dark folk tunes with often thought-provoking lyrics. 3CD or 3LP set with plenty of liner notes to give ya all the details.

Leroy Sibbles / Norma Frazier
Express Yourself / Respect

Some great reggae/dancehall reissues from the great Studio One label, remastered here by the great Soul Jazz Records. Sounds great! Here we have Express Yourself by Leroy Sibbles backed with Respect from Norma Frazier. Leroy Sibbles’ reggae take on the classic tune from Charles Wright & The Watts is an up-beat reggae tune which is a dead cert for dancefloor fun. Norma Frazier’s take on Respect is equally fantastic, with Frazier’s soulful vocals and the perfect reggae instrumentation.

The White Birch
Star Is Just A Sun

The White Birch spent a full decade away between 2005 and 2015, when they returned with The Weight Of Spring. Now they are back in business, what better time to reissue Star Is Just A Sun, their early 2000’s masterpiece. Tender, sensitive, near-ambient slowcore music of impressive emotional weight. Remastered and reissued by the Glitterhouse label.

Lee Hazlewood
Its Cause and Cure

Welcome to a series of Light In The Attic reissues of the selected works of Lee Hazlewood. His 1967 MGM album Lee Hazlewoodism: Its Cause And Cure is full of dramatic, fully-orchestrated numbers, driven by Hazlewood’s compelling drawl. Fully remastered from the original tapes and with a few bonus tracks thrown in too.

Neil On Impression
L'Oceano Delle Onde Che Restano Onde Per Sempre

Italian post-rock maestros Neil on Impression’s masterpiece L’Oceano Delle Onde Che Restano Onde Per Sempre has been long overdue for both translation and reissue. And thanks to the kind folks at Google Translate and Denovali, we’re able to provide both. More or less. It’s something about The Ocean’s Waves That Remain Until Forever. It’s also about creating what is perhaps the pinnacle of post-rock.

Buzzcocks
Another Music In A Different Kitchen

The debut album by vitally important UK punks The Buzzcocks, reissued. Another Music in a Different Kitchen tears straight through 11 songs, immediately establishing that this was a band to get excited about upon original release in 1978. Now livingly restored and remastered from the original tapes. Even more exciting than that is that it comes with a carrier bag.

Armando Sciascia
Violin Reactions

Armando Sciascia has done significant work soundtracking odd wonders of Italian cinema, but also had a sideline in experimental library musics. Violin Reactions is of the latter group, with a mass of strings swirling around synthesiser lines and percussion. An extremely rare and desirable release, now out in the world again thanks to The Roundtable label.

Skeptics
III

Skeptics were active in 1980’s New Zealand, throwing out post-punk music that leaned very close to noise at certain exciting moments. They swum against the prevailing jangle-indie tide of Flying Nun by using samplers and being more aggressive, and good thing too. This reissue of III shows exactly what they brought to the scene.

Skeptics
Amalgam

Skeptics were active in 1980’s New Zealand, throwing out post-punk music that leaned very close to noise at certain exciting moments. They swum against the prevailing jangle-indie tide of their scene with samplers and aggression: Amalgam was their final record, and possible their darkest. Reissued by Flying Nun.

Scott Fagan
South Atlantic Blues

Scott Fagan’s debut album South Atlantic Blues was recorded and first released in 1968, but has sunk deep out of print over the years, despite associations with Doc Pomus and artist Jasper Johns. Also, Fagan turns out to be the estranged father of Stephin goddamn Merritt of The Magnetic Fields! Good thing this has been reissued for the first time ever then eh? On Saint Cecilia Knows.

Normil Hawaiians
Return of The Ranters

Recorded in 1985, Normil Hawaiians’ third album Return Of The Ranters is quite an album. On the one hand it is a set of relatively conventional mid-80s post-punk political songs. But on the other hand, strange details and structures are packed in everywhere: strange violin loops, unidentified tones, and unrestrained improvisation. Significant reissue on Upset The Rhythm.

Bernd Kistenmacher
Wake Up In The Sun

Bernd Kistenmacher grew up a little too late to roll with the Tangerine Dreams and the Klaus Schulzes of the German electronic music world, but he didn’t let that stop him: he just got hold of the same sorts of analogue synthesisers and got involved, ignoring the digital 80’s world around him. Wake Up In The Sun was first released in 1987, now reissued by Bureau B.

Whitehouse
Total Sex

Controversial power electronics pioneers Whitehouse originally released their second album 'Total Sex' back in 1980. This reissue features bonus tracks 'Her Entry' and 'Foreplay' which originally appeared on a label compilation album. The tracks were recorded during the same sessions as Total Sex, so it’s only fitting that they find a home together here.

Armando Trovajoli
Ciao Rudy

Ciao Rudy was a 1966 musical that was scored by the talented Armando Trovajoli. Music from it became one of the rarest 33rpm records that RCA ever released, but this reissue and remastering from GDM makes it somewhat more available. Trovajoli’s work is as grand and dramatic as you’d expect, with a good dose of 60’s flair.

Mr. Lif
I Phantom

An awesome reissue of Mr Lif’s debut album I Phantom. Originally on El-P’s now defunct Def Jux imprint it features many of the key players including El-P himself, Aesop Rock, and Vast Aire. If you’ve missed out on anything to do with Def Jux, this is a good place to start, showcasing leftfield hip-hop done well. There certainly aren’t many concept hip-hop albums around.

Noveller
No Dreams

Sarah Lipstate's got a new Noveller album coming out! 'No Dreams' has eight new tracks of her smudgy ethereal ambient pop full of sleepy drones and yawning trails of gleaming guitar noise, inspired by the artist's struggles to distinguish between reality and hallucination in the moments between sleep and awakening.

Jean-Claude Vannier
L'Enfant Assassin Des Mouches

Über-rare in original pressing form (and relatively rare by now in its first Finders Keepers reissue edition), L’Enfant Assassin Des Mouches is a cult wonder. Super-fresh sounding French odd-rock / odd-pop from the 1960’s, with the mastermind Jean-Claude Vannier utilising proggish jamming and soaring choral singing to great effect. 10th anniversary Finders Keepers reissue.

Trader Horne
Morning Way

Morning Way, the only album ever made by Trader Horne, is considered a major (and majorly unappreciated) example of 1970’s British psychedelic folk. First of all, just look at that cover art! The music is similarly colourful, varied, and wonderfully odd. Reissued by Earth Recordings on CD or red coloured vinyl.

Sufjan Stevens
Songs For Christmas

How nice it would be to live in Sufjan world. Each year around the festive season he'd gather round with friends to make a Christmas EP. He'll be there in a massive jumper singing away. Heartwarming. Well this tradition went on for a few years and now you can get all the yuletide fruits on this box set of all the songs. Sufjan's folky and melancholy tones are just perfect for Christmas listening. Let it sleet.

Kindness
World You Need A Change Of Mind

The press release describes this re-issue as long awaited but also notes that the original album was released in 2012. That's just three years ago - not that long. Anyway it showcases ol' longhair before he disappeared completely up his own arse. He's at his best here with his brand of smooth updates on all those '70's and '80's soul smoochers you love so much. Slinky.

Son Volt
Trace

If Wilco was Jeff Tweedy’s response to the break-up of Uncle Tupelo, bandmate Jay Farrar’s was to form Son Volt. Trace was the first album under the name, and it is something of a landmark of alt-country. It is reissued here as a deluxe edition, the CD version including a whole live show on a second disc.
