John Cale
Music For A New Society

An interesting move here from John Cale, who is simultaneously re-releasing his 1982 album Music For A New Society and producing a wholly new version, M:FANS. This vinyl release of the original album includes an additional 3 bonus tracks that were previously unreleased. LP with download code on Domino.

Karl Bartos
Communication

The Trocadero label repress Karl Bartos’ 2003 synth-pop gem Communication. Bartos was an integral member of Kraftwerk and this album was his solo debut. The initial release was poorly marketed, meaning these great synth driven songs went mostly unnoticed. Communication updates the Kraftwerk formula, with vocodered vocals and elaborate synth hooks.

The Fuzztones
Leave Your Mind At Home

They’re called The Fuzztones, it’s called Leave Your Mind at Home and that cover, with that font and that colour scheme - you just know how this one’s gonna sound. Having formed in 1980, The Fuzztones brought that whirling ‘60s paisley sound back into the musical scene. Expect lots of garage vocals, oozing organ and, funnily enough, fuzzy tones. Reissued as an LP for the first time in over ten years. Comes with six bonus tracks and a free coloured 7” of “Bad News Travels Fast”.

Yellow Magic Orchestra
BGM

BGM is the extremely influential 1981 release from Japanese synth-pop eccentrics Yellow Magic Orchestra. Ryuichi Sakamoto’s gurgling synthesizers mesh with motorik drum machines and the catchiest melodies you have ever heard. This reissue from Music on Vinyl comes on 180 gram wax and the first 1000 pressed are also on transparent vinyl. The dense pop-experimentalism of this record is still shocking.

The Replacements
Let It Be

Let It Be was the third album by Minneapolis post-punk-punk band The Replacements and was originally released in 1984. The band were led by Paul Westerberg. Let It Be is one of the band’s best albums and is arguably the best album called Let It Be that’s ever been released. Lyrically it deals with many coming of age issues, musically it is more melodic than their previous work. Vinyl reissue on Rhino.

Baumann / Koek
Baumann / Koek

Bureau B reissue Baumann/Koek’s self-titled 1978 kosmische synth workout on vinyl LP and CD. ‘Reissue’ doesn’t do justice to the label’s discovery of this dense and psychedelic drone album, which was originally pressed to only 1000 copies. The glistening arpeggios and drum machines were so far ahead of time, that now they deserve to be considered alongside contemporaries such as Klaus Schulze and Dieter Moebius.

African Head Charge
Drastic Season

We have four African Head Charge albums incoming from Adrian Sherwood’s On-U Sound. 1983’s Drastic Season is a highly original swirl of dub rhythms and African percussion, mutated into strange new forms by heavy tape editing and use of new technology. Remastered reissue with extra bass weight.

Destroyer
Streethawk: A Seduction

The 2001 album from Destroyer, Streethawk: A Seduction, properly reissued. Smart indie-tinged epic pop of the high quality you’d expect from Dan Bejar: indeed, this early album was one of the albums that established his remarkable reputations, containing many fan favourites. CD or LP editions available, on the Merge label.

Wu-Tang Clan
The W

The W is the third studio album by the world's baddest Hip Hop group Wu-Tang Clan. Released in 2000, the album debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200, and instantly topped the R&B/Hip Hop Albums Chart after release. Containing the hit "Gravel Pit", the album was certified Platinum a few months later. After their 1997 album Wu-Tang Forever and several solo projects, The W has a more rugged, less polished sound than most Wu-Tang related albums from that era. Group mastermind RZA produced The W with roughed up Soul samples and tight, tough beats. Paranoid kung fu samples and bizarre sounds drive the fantastic nightmare. The back-to-basics approach puts the focus back on some of the best rappers in the game. The album also features guest appearances from Isaac Hayes, Redman, Nas, Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg.

All Them Witches
Lightning At The Door

All Them Witches are a heavy-jamming psych-rock unit, able to brew up mighty, bluesy riff-monsters in no time at all. Studio album Lightning At The Door was first released last year. This is a brand new repress courtesy of New West.

DJ Katapila
Trotro

The always reliable Awesome Tapes From Africa return with this ace CD and double vinyl LP from DJ Katapila. Trotro is a fast-paced mash-up of Ghanaian traditional music and modern technology. Katapila sings, shouts and chants over backing that sounds as if it had been beamed from the golden age of detroit house. Ferociously fast drum machines chatter over the minimalist musical forms of gome, kpanlogo and gyama.

Elvis Presley
My Happiness / That's When Your Heartaches Begin

Jack White goes deep into his favourites and influences with his latest release on his Third Man label. Elvis Presley himself. Not just any Elvis either, but the first recording the man ever made, in 1953. This reissue of My Happiness / That’s When Your Heartaches Begin is carefully transferred from the acetate, and is presented as a facsimile of the original.

Harmonia
Deluxe

Always good to have these German jewels in print. Gronland are reissuing the first two Harmonia studio albums, to the joy of all. The 1970’s group combined Cluster with Micheal Rother of Neu!: three professionals in the art of ascending to higher musical planes through shiny repetition. Deluxe has a fairly grotesque cover, but it otherwise superb.

Piero Umiliani
Synthi Time

Piero Umiliani is part of the canon of Italian film composers, but he stepped away from the orchestra for a while in 1971 to record Synthi Time, a lovely collection of short melodic pieces using synthesisers alongside a Hammond and a kind of harpsichord. Dreamy, bright, and a little odd, like a melancholic childhood. LP reissue on Schema.

Owen Maercks
Teenage Sex Therapist

Here's a fascinating bit of late '70s outsider pop from Owen Maercks, originally pressed privately in the hope of securing a record deal but was too hard-to-pigeonhole for any labels to bite. It's now been rescued from history's trash heap by Feeding Tube records, who present its scratchy Talking Heads-meets-Modern Lovers-meets-Devo new wave pop on an official release for the first time here.

Keith Hudson
Jammys Dub Encounter

Big re-issue for fans of premium dub. A companion piece to 'Tuff Gong Encounter' this showcases The Wailers in fine and heavy style. King Jammy is at the controls for six massive woofer testing dub tracks, with the vinyl cut loud for maximum rib rattling bass and big drum sounds.

Steve Warner
Steve Warner

Is there no end to the supply of under-appreciated 1970’s private-pressed singer-songwriters waiting to be rediscovered and reissued? Seemingly not. Although when the quality remains so high, it is hard to complain. Steve Warner’s 1979 debut (and only) album is sweet and melodic whilst also being strange around the edges. Reissue on Earth Recordings.

Destroyer
Destroyer's Rubies

The 2006 album from Destroyer, Destroyer’s Rubies, reissued by Merge. Smart indie-tinged pop of the high-quality you’d expect from Dan Bejar. The (double) LP edition comes with a useful download code, and the download code comes with an exciting, exclusive bonus track, the 24-minute ‘Loscil’s Rubies’.

Destroyer

The 2002 album from Destroyer, This Night, properly reissued on vinyl by Merge after a Record Store Day exclusive release a few years ago. Smart indie-tinged epic pop of the high quality you’d expect from Dan Bejar. CD or double vinyl LP editions available, the LP coming with  a handy download code.

The Nectarine No.9
Saint Jack

A blend of Scottish and Nottingham heritage (we’ll call it Scottingham), The Nectarine No. 9 released their opus Saint Jack on Postcard Records in 1995. Noisy, dark, humorous but ultimately pop-oriented, this unique album is packed full of tasty ideas. Out on 2CD and vinyl LP from Forever Heavenly.

Earl Brutus
Tonight You Are The Special One

Much-missed cult favourites Earl Brutus have their work reissued by 3 Loop Music. Cutting post-punk super-pop. The CD edition of second album Tonight You Are The Special One comes packaged with a comprehensive B-sides collection on the second CD, which also contains the last track from the band’s last ever gig.

Yacht
Shangri-La

Shangri-La by Yacht gets a double white vinyl reissue - the first time it’s been available since 2011. Shangri-La was the band’s second album to be released on DFA records following 2009’s acclaimed album See The Mystery Lights. Shangri-La saw the band making use of a proper studio for the first time and trying their hand at mixing a number of seemingly disparate genres such as disco, psychedelia, punk and krautrock and sewing them all together with some neat pop stitching.

Sam Amidon
But This Chicken Proved Falsehearted

I’ve not seen a title that suggests an interesting story quite so vividly and concisely as this one for quite a while: But This Chicken Proved Falsehearted. Excellent stuff. The record is the 2005 ‘true’ debut of Sam Amidon, and it had never appeared on vinyl before this reissue. The CD also comes with a bonus 10 tracks of demos (as does the vinyl’s download card). On Omnivore.
