Miracle Legion
Portrait of a Damaged Family

Ah now this is more like it Record Store Day. 'Portrait of a Damaged Family' was Miracle Legion's fourth and to date final record but they'd got themselves in a right old muddle with their record company at the time so it was only given a small release. In fact as a Miracle Legion obsessive I only found out about it's existence years later. For the uninitiated, Miracle Legion were a popular mid '80s band that followed closely in the footsteps of REM's early dream like pastoral pop. After they split, singer Mark Mulcahy released a series of acclaimed solo albums of which Thom Yorke is a fan. The band is re-uniting for some shows this summer. Come to England, please.

Ornette Coleman
To Whom Who Keeps A Record

This is a rare slice of Ornette Coleman, a collection originally only released in Japan and made up of outtakes from the classics Change of the Century and This Is Our Music. Needless to say with that pedigree (and with the same astonishing band line-up, including Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell), this is premium jazz. First-time vinyl reissue!

The Honeymoon Killers
Les Tueurs de la Lune de Miel

The Honeymoon Killers were a Belgian band fronted by Yvon Vromman. They formed in 1974 but it wasn’t until the early ‘80s and the release of Les Tueurs de la Lune de Meil in 1982 that they started to tour the rest of Europe. The British music press and French TV loved ‘em and Les Tueurs… became a much sought after piece of vinyl. Their music was a mix of indie, jazz and African rhythms.

The (Hypothetical) Prophets
Around The World With

InFine remaster and reissue The (Hypothetical) Prophets phenomenally obscure minimal synth album. Cut-up samples, strange deadpan vocals and harsh synthesizer from none-other than Bernard Szajner (of Visions of Dune fame) have made Around the World With the stuff of legend. Now it is available again on vinyl LP, with download code, and CD.

The Pop Group
For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder?

An essential record from The Pop Group, reissued at last. For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? is no less boldly political than it’s title suggests, railing furiously against imperialism with Mark Stewart’s howls and the band’s tight post-punk-funk. Both CD and 2LP editions come with art prints and posters. On Freaks R Us.

Ebo Taylor
Twer Nyame

Ghana’s Ebo Taylor produced some thoroughly gorgeous highlife music in the 1970’s, comfortably relaxed and smooth-flowing. 1978’s Twer Nyame adds strong twists of jazz and afrobeat into the mix too. The political conditions at the time of release meant that these records were sparsely distributed at the time, so relish this timely reissue on Mr Bongo.

Ebo Taylor
My Love and Music

Ghana’s Ebo Taylor produced some thoroughly gorgeous highlife music in the 1970’s, comfortably relaxed and smooth-flowing. The political conditions at the time of release meant that records like 1975’s My Love and Music were sparsely distributed at the time, so relish this timely reissue on Mr Bongo.

Dieter Moebius
Blotch

In honour of the recently-departed Dieter Moebius of Cluster, Bureau B are now reissuing his 4 most recent solo albums. 1999’s Blotch is a set of electronic compositions that loop loops upon loops, resulting in some fine hypnotic semi-ambient atmospheres. Available on CD or, for the first time, on vinyl.

Flaming Tunes

Following Gareth Williams’ departure from post-punk experimentalists This Heat in the early 80s, he teamed up with Mary Currie to form Flaming Tunes. Their debut and sole album is packed full of mesmerising pop songs and daydream instrumentals. Full of lo-fi warmth, psychedelic folk suites and bizarre yet listenable sound experiments, it's become a beloved cult favourite of record collectors.

The Frozen Autumn
Time Is Just A Memory

The Frozen Autumn is an Italian band from Turin. They’ve released three albums since forming in 1993 and Time is Just a Memory is a six-track collection and a general overview of those three albums. The songs are dark, clinical synth tracks in the vein of Depeche Mode, Cocteau Twins and Oppenheimer Analysis. Six remastered tracks. Includes an 11x11 insert with lyrics and notes.

Crash Course In Science
Jump Over Barrels

Crash Course In Science are a post-punk band formed by three art school students in Philadelphia in 1979. Whilst guitars, drums and synths were used, the band eschewed convention by experimenting with toy instruments and kitchen appliances to add to their sound. Jump Over Barrells was recorded in 1981, intended for an album called Near Marineland, the song remained unmixed and unreleased. This 12” also features a robust remix by Charles Manier aka Tadd Mullinix and a demo version from 1980 which highlights the track’s raw sparseness.

Sonic Youth
Master-Dik

Master-Dik is one an early piece of the Sonic Youth puzzle, an EP released the year before their Daydream Nation. As well as the title track, this collection includes a scrappy series of short tracks that span beatboxing, sound collage, and covers of The Ramones and The Beatles. Peculiar stuff, reissued by the Goofin’ label.

Flying Saucer Attack
Distance

Domino begin their Flying Saucer Attack reissue project with a tough to find singles compilation from 1994. Distance is a reminder of how influential the group’s spaced-out drone rock has become. Waves of feedback blend with field recordings and distorted vocals to create something harsh and melodic at the same time.

Flying Saucer Attack
Chorus

Chorus compiles a handful of singles, rare compilation tracks and an entire Peel session from experimental rockers Flying Saucer Attack. This is the second of Domino’s set reissuing tough to find works from the band. The balance of heaviness and lightness in the soaring Feedback Song is the template for all of the band’s droning post-rock. On 180 gram vinyl.

Noel Ellis
Noel Ellis

Noel Ellis’ self-titled album of dub-tinged reggae songcraft is an underrated gem, well worthy of reissue by Light In The Attic. Sample-spotters will be able to identify a considerable treat in ‘Dance With Me’, which Kanye West made prominent use of in his track ‘All Day’. LP with restored artwork and updated liner notes.

Steve Reich
Four Organs / Phase Patterns

Classic Steve Reich pieces presented in the form of classic 1971 recordings, reissued by Superior Viaduct. Both Four Organs and Phase Patterns utilise Reich’s patented phased repetition techniques, each performed by an ensemble including both Reich himself and fellow minimalist prince Philip Glass. CD reissue on Superior Viaduct.

Lizzy Mercier Descloux
Suspense

Lizzy Mercier Descloux was a singer, songwriter and performer who buzzed around the fringes of numerous crucial areas during her adventurous career. Suspense is her take on an 80’s pop record, an unusual step that works remarkably well. Light In The Attic are reissuing Suspense and several other of her albums, in remastered form. With 6 bonus tracks!

Lizzy Mercier Descloux
Zulu Rock

Lizzy Mercier Descloux was a singer, songwriter and performer who buzzed around the fringes of numerous crucial areas during her adventurous career. Zulu Rock is her South African album, a real 80’s afro-funk record. Remastered and reissued on Light In The Attic, with the addition of 5 bonus tracks.

Charlemagne Palestine
Godbear

Um, ye, that cover does it for me. I’ll take one. Pretty neat that the music inside of Godbear by Charlemagne Palestine is also epic. From 1987, Godbear was originally intended to come out out on Glenn Branca's Neutral Records but eventually emerged on CD, on the now defunct Barooni label in 1998. Godbear is an album of solo piano which creates a mind-meddling swarm of grand piano which frantically flutters into a captivating sound-barrier which draws you further in with every listen. Black Truffle Records present a remastered version inside a deluxe gatefold sleeve.

The Clash
The Clash

The eponymous debut by The Clash was released in 1977. The songs themes dealt with race, sex, politics and economics. It includes the classic short, sharp shock of White Riot and the band’s sublime cover of Junior Murvin’s Police & Thieves, where the band first showed their reggae influences.

The Jazz Butcher
Last Of The Gentlemen Adventurers

Celebrating the 30th birthday of this long running British indie collective, this begins a series of re-issues from their long and varied back catalogue. Led by the wonderfully monikered Pat Fish, the Jazz Butcher took elements of the Velvet Underground and Syd Barrett and took it in idiosyncratic, whimsical directions. As well as Pat there's some future big names on here including super producer Richard Formby and Spacemen 3 legend Sonic Boom.

The Radio Dept
Clinging To A Scheme

Clinging To A Scheme was The Radio Dept.’s 2010 return, after several years away, to reclaim their position at the top of the Swedish indie-pop pile. This third album often settles into an intoxicating dreamy haze of vocals, soft guitars and organ, but also grabs influence from P-funk: real beats! Reissue from Labrador.

Max Richter
Songs From Before

Max Richter does his Max Richter thing on 2006’s Songs From Before. Aided by some cello and bass, Richter tinkles ivories, mixes and produces on this record to end up with a dozen pleasant contemporary classical vignettes. That voice you hear cropping up from time to time on Songs From Before is Robert Wyatt, by the way - he reads extracts from various Haruki Murakami books throughout the album.

Breathless
Blue Moon

Tenor Vossa present this gorgeous album of shoegaze and indie-drone, complete with new material, on double vinyl LP or CD. Blue Moon is from 1999 and the middle of Breathless’ career. Here Dominic Appleton’s powerful and melancholy vocals dominate their dream-pop sound, but the unusual instrumentation and bubbling drones provide the perfect foundation.

Wildbirds & Peacedrums
Rivers

Rivers combines two EPs that Wildbirds & Peacedrums made during one week in Reykjavik: Retina, which deploys a chamber choir arranged by Hildur Gudnadottir, and Iris, which focuses on a steel pan. Two different sides of this duo’s wonderful sound, each complementing the other neatly. Reissued from 2010 by The Leaf Label.

Polar Bear
Peepers

Peepers by Polar Bear was originally released in 2010. It’s an album that has something for everyone. Percussionist and bandleader, Sebastian Roachford, takes jazz and mixes elements of rock, folk, soul and electronic in an unusual yet highly engaging fashion. It was the best selling album on The Leaf Label.

Efterklang
Parades

Leaf celebrates twenty years with a handful of reissues, Efterklang’s Parades among them. Branching out from the wiry electronics of debut Tripper, Parades makes heavy use of orchestral instruments to create a cheery mix between the vaulting tweeness of Danish indie and the pomposity of post-rock.

Bert Jansch records are always worth hearing, and this 1973 album is certainly no exception.
