Paul Haig
Metamorphosis

Paul Haig was of course a member of that sharp-edged indie band Josef K; later on he became a proper pop star. This compilation, aptly titled Metamorphosis, documents the period of change, with singles, EPs, 12”s and live material, as well as collaborative music made under the Rhythm of Life name. Some embryonic pop as well as some odder experiments. Double disc release on Les Disques du Crepuscule.

Domestic Landscape Activities

You just know from that title that this has some severe Pavement influences going on. But these ain't new pretenders this is a re-issue from a cassette only release back in 1994 where every college long hair played their guitars sideways and ranted noisily about appliances. This rabble feature folks from New Bad Things who were a fine noise pop outfit. Expect a good mess.

Mystic Eyes
Mysterious

Mysterious, the 1979 album of Anthony Johnson’s group Mystic Eyes, is a very rare piece of reggae history: as it has never been reissued, original copies fetch high, hefty prices. This Burning Sound reissue makes the Jah-worshipping roots riddims widely available once more, on CD and vinyl editions. Produced by Linval Thomson.

These Arms Are Snakes
Tail Swallower and Dove

Imagine if your arms were snakes, that would be fun wouldn't it? Instead These Arms Are Snakes are a Seattle art rock and post hardcore collective known for throwing Fugazi shapes all over the place. Their third album Tail Swallower and Dove eschewed some of the proggier aspects of previous records for a more cohesive collection. Originally released in 2008 it now has a re-press on Renal Failure coloured vinyl. Don't ask.

Tectonic Plates Volume 1

The Tectonic Plates series really live up to their ground-shaking namesake, even a decade down the line from their initial release into the fiery heat of peak UK dubstep. Originally split over an array of 10”s, this reissue puts all 8 tracks (from Skream, Digital Mystikz, Loefah and the like) onto 2 12”s. Plus! A bonus 2006 mix cd from Pinch.

Soviet Soviet
Nice

Soviet Soviet, who are, curiously enough, an Italian band, created and self-released the tracks on Nice as a variety of singles from 2008 onwards: they they were digitally compiled in 2011, and now they are at last pressed to wax together. This is the band’s earliest material, showing off their tight and adventurous post-punk sound. Limited edition of 500 LPs on Felte.

Tim Maia
Nobody Can Live Forever: The Existential Soul Of Tim Maia

Tim Maia has a lot of cultural caché in his native Brazil, but his profile in the English-speaking world could do with a little boost: enter Luaka Bop. The David Byrne-affiliated label have compiled 15 highlights from Maia’s extremely soulful career. Nobody Can Live Forever: The Existential Soul of Tim Maia is available on CD or double LP.

Seasick Steve & The Level Blues
Cheap

This is the very first album from everyone’s favourite (presumably-former?) hobo bluesman Seasick Steve, recorded in 2004 with a pair of Scandinavians (The Level Devils). Cheap sounds cheap, but it's also full of heart and soul and gnarly guitar, presented raw and unadulterated. Reissued by There’s A Dead Skunk on CD and vinyl.

Johnnie Frierson
Have You Been Good To Yourself

Johnnie Frierson was in the 60’s Stax soul crew The Drapels and is brother to Wendy Rene, but his own personal music was not so much about making people dance as about making them pray. Have You Been Good To Yourself is a set of heartfelt intimate gospel songs, recorded at home and locally distributed around Memphis. This remastered Light In The Attic reissue is the first ‘proper’ release of this sensitive music to date.

Rusalnaia
Rusalnaia

Rusalnaia is the transatlantic collaboration of 2 highly singular folk musicians: Philadelphia, USA’s Gillian Chadwick and England’s Sharron Kraus, who did such good work with Robert Plant a while ago. Their 2007 debut, never before released on vinyl, sounds strange and haunted and misty and beautiful, a highlight of each artist’s catalogue. Reissue on Feeding Tube Records.

The Folk Group

Is there no end to the archives of Piero Umiliani? As if there wasn’t enough high-grade material out there under his own name, the experimental Italian film / library music composer also worked under other names: here, Zalla. The Folk Group is a weird set of funky rock-band jams, calmly sailing forwards into untapped territory. LP reissue on Schema.

MF DOOM
Special Blends Vol. 1 & 2

Apart from preaching the apocalypse as one of the best lyricists in hip hop, MF DOOM has also been a prolific producer and remixer. In order to soften the pain of his ongoing hiatus, Metal Face is now reissuing his previously unfindably-rare Special Blends Vol. 1 & 2 on 2xLP. On this 2004 release, he remixes other rappers’ verses onto his own lo-fi beats. Features verses by De La Soul, Nas and Gang Starr.

Witch
Lukombo Vibes

Never forget the sound of Zamrock, Zambia’s 1970’s response to the rock’n’prog boom going on in the Anglocentric world. Bands like Witch took those styles and filtered them through immense funk and Afro rhythms for something particularly special. Lukombo Vibes is their 1976 fourth album, now remastered and reissued by Now-Again.

The Bevis Frond
Any Gas Faster

The Bevis Frond were an indie band in the classic mould, releasing their earnest, slightly scrappy rock action on an array of small labels. The time has come for some reissues: here we have 1990’s Any Gas Faster, a particularly psych-tinged record, and the first Bevis Frond album to be recorded in a proper studio. CD / double LP on the Fire label, bolstered by some bonus live tracks.

The Bevis Frond were an indie band in the classic mould, releasing their earnest, slightly scrappy rock action on an array of small labels. The time has come for some reissues: here we have London Stone, recorded in 1991 but not released until 2005, bolstered by a set of bonus tracks (demos and rarities). CD / double LP on the Fire label.

Piero Umiliani & I Suoi Oscillatori
Il Mondo Dei Romani

Italian avant-soundtrack man Piero Umiliani produced this strange music as an accompaniment to Il Mondo Dei Romani,  an early 70’s documentary about ancient Rome. Umiliani believed that the most appropriate music for the project would be a recreation of traditional instruments via a collection of synthesisers: remarkable sounds! Orange vinyl on We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want.

Love
Reel To Real

Love wrapped up their career over 40 years ago with Reel To Real, a classically funky selection from Arther Love and the gang. This double LP reissue (first time on vinyl in decades) accompanies the original record with 11 never-before-heard tracks, a mixture of alternate takes and unreleased original songs(!). Plus a lengthy, comprehensive booklet.

P.R.O.
Blacky Joe

People Rock Outfit were a Nigerian garage-rock band, and Blacky Joe was their only album. Sparse and funky afro-rock, with enough groove that they were able to act as Jimmy Cliff during a Nigerian tour. Apparently, original pressings of this 1976 album are so rare as to virtually not exist, so this Soundways reissue is really doing the world a service. 1000 vinyl copies.

Prince and the Revolution
Around The World In A Day

Prince’s post-Purple Rain album found the sex-funk overlord’s run of mastery continuing. He wound back from the commercial hit-making slightly in favour of some wild psychedelia, but 1985’s Around The World In A Day still contains ‘Raspberry Beret’ and sold in the millions. It’s peak-period Prince for god’s sake: it can’t be beat! Timely vinyl reissue on Warner Bros.

Grace Jones
Warm Leatherette

A special reissue of Warm Leatherette, Grace Jones’ 1980 album. This collection remasters the album tracks and singles and B-sides, instrumentals and club and dub versions, making a total of 27 tracks. The 2CD set comes in a leatherette case and the four 180g LPs are in a hard case with a download code. A hefty celebration of one of the greats at her very best.

Seun Kuti + Egypt 80
From Africa With Fury: Rise

Seun Kuti, offspring of the grand overlord of afrobeat Fela himself, has this music flowing through his veins. He lets it out again on From Africa With Fury: Rise, his 2011 album with Egypt 80, which nails the unbeatable groove and stunning energy that the best of the genre ascends to. Oh, and it was produced by Brian Eno too! Double disc LP reissue on Because Music.

David Bowie
Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (The Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture is the video documentation of the legendary final gig of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust period: the one where he surprised everyone, including The Spiders From Mars, by closing the whole thing down. Needless to say, it's a pretty special show, and the soundtrack audio is presented here on 2 LPs.

Converge
You Fail Me

Converge reissue a couple of old favourites via the Deathwish Inc. label. Originally released in 2004, You Fail Me is one of the best examples of the legendary band’s cutting metalcore brutality, pushing through twelve tracks in only thirty-five minutes. This vinyl version also includes a bonus track exclusive to this release.
