Incredible Bongo Band
Bongo Rock

Bongo Rock is a reissue of the 1973 album by The Incredible Bongo Band. If you we’re wondering where all of your favourite hip hop and dance acts sampled their beats from, there’s a good chance they got them from here. Everyone from Beastie Boys to Jay-Z, Goldie to Aphex Twin have delved into this rich resource for drum samples and inspiration.

Silver Apples
Beacon

The 1997 return of the legendary oscillation-innovators Silver Apples is reissued onto vinyl for the first time ever. Beacon still has the wide-eyed sense of explorative magic that Silver Apples first announced themselves with, even if the rest of music had finally caught up with them by this point. CD / LP reissues on Chicken Coop.

Lisa Hannigan
Passenger

After a successful stint as Damien Rice's vocal partner, Lisa Hannigan set out to prove herself as not just a singer but a multi-instrumentalist folk songwriter. 2011's Passenger, Hannigan's sophomore release, showcased her true talents as an all-rounder, and is now available on vinyl for the first time. Expect profound folk tales, delivered by sweet Irish vocals and accompanied by rustic guitars. Released as Vinyl LP and CD on the Play It Again Sam label.

Doing It In Lagos: Boogie, Pop & Disco In 1980s Nigeria

Continuing the recent love of all things Nigeria, Soundway Records present Doing it in Lagos: Boogie, Pop & Disco in 1980s Nigeria. As far removed from the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti that everybody associates with the country, this compilation shows another side to Nigeria’s rich musical culture, with New York influenced boogie tunes infused with a distinct Nigerian feel. 2CD or 3LP with a bonus 7”

Terry Reid
The Other Side Of The River

Terry Reid is relatively unknown compared to what could have been: Jimmy Page asked him to be the vocalist for Led Zeppelin. Reid turned the offer down, Robert Plant got the job and the rest is history. Reid has an incredible voice which earned him the nickname Superlungs. He has been covered by The Raconteurs and sampled by DJ Shadow. Reid released his third studio album, River, in 1973 which, although relatively commercially unsuccessful at the time, is held in high regard by fans. The Other Side Of The River contains long-forgotten (even by Reid himself) outtakes and alternate versions from River sessions.

Bright Eyes
Lifted Or The Story Is In The Soil

A reissue of Bright Eyes' 2002 full length release, Lifted Or The Story Is In The Soil. With equal parts folk and indie, frontman Conor Oberst's authentic and well-crafted songwriting is accompanied by his shaky Nebraska voice and diverse instrumentation including orchestral elements, a rock line-up and often just simple acoustic guitar. Released on Vinyl LP and CD on the Saddle Creek label.

MX-80 Sound
Out Of The Tunnel

MX-80’s sound has always been a rare thing, combining the sharp edges and harsh energy of post-punk and noise-rock with lessons learned from modern classical composition and free jazz. We don’t really know what to call it, but we can highly recommend this reissue of Out Of The Tunnel: the first time it has been available since 1980. Remastered with new photographs and notes on Ship to Shore PhonoCo.

Jack Rose
Opium Musick

VHF have just launched a crucial series of reissues of the music of Jack Rose, a major voice in experimental acoustic guitar music, both on his own and as a member of Pelt. 2003’s Opium Musick features Rose holding forth on 12-string and 6-string guitar, as well as a lap guitar. As with all his work, there is a deep engagement with ragtime and blues history at work here. LP reissue.

Jack Rose
Red Horse, White Mule

VHF have just launched a crucial series of reissues of the music of Jack Rose, a major voice in experimental acoustic guitar music, both on his own and as a member of Pelt. Red Horse, White Mule is his 2002 debut album as a solo artist. It pairs a series of shorter pieces with a colossally deep raga that fills up a whole side of the vinyl. What a beautiful talent.

Thurston Moore & Tom Surgal
Not Me

Erstwhile guitar-noise practitioner and former Sonic Youth guy Thurston Moore teams up with Tom Surgal and his drum kit for this 1996 free-improv session. The two duck and weave around each other, generating sizzling electro-crackle atmospheres for all the family. This reissue of Not Me comes with new liner notes in a replica of the original LP sleeve, and is limited to 500 copies. On Fourth Dimension.

Tariverdiev
The Irony Of Fate (Original Score)

The remastered original score from the 1976 Soviet romantic comedy film, The Irony Of Fate. Award-winning Soviet composer Mikael Tariverdiev is the musical visionary behind these 17 tracks of beautiful orchestration, with swelling strings punctuated by delicate pianos and classical guitars. Released as Vinyl LP on Earth Recordings.

Die Form
Zoo

Recorded between 1980-82 during writing sessions for their album Die Puppe, these 10 tracks are all hardware equipment (TR-808 and ARP2600 to name a few) and mostly improvisations. These synth mangling electro tracks are rough and ready, noisy and thrown together, and that’s why they’re great. Distorted vocals and tape hiss, yes please.

Pedro Santos
Krishnanda

This 1968 album by Pedro Santos makes the listener smile immediately with an opening volley of irresistible rhythm and brass fanfare. From there onwards, Krishnanda travels through some of the funkiest Brazilian music you ever heard, all with a definite psychedelic flavour. This joyous album is super-rare, but now Mr Bongo have reissued it!

Kronos Quartet
Pieces of Africa

Pieces Of Africa finds the go-to indie-classical string quartet supreme, the Kronos Quartet, taking on commissions from eight African composers. With the string quartet being arguably one of the most archetypal formats of the Western classical tradition, it is wonderful to hear it pushed in new directions on these ingenious compositions. Double LP on Nonesuch.

Yoko Ono
Plastic Ono Band

Fronted with bizarre, eery screeching, Yoko Ono's (widow of John Lennon) avant-garde offering Plastic Ono is finally reissued on vinyl. Originally released way back in 1971, the album has a classic yet timeless sound that has influenced a host of musicians throughout the decades.

John Lennon / Yoko Ono
Unfinished Music No. 2: Life With The Lions

As the second part of John and Yoko’s Unfinished Music series, Life With The Lions is one of the least popular albums John Lennon was ever involved with. Partner Yoko Ono took a Fluxus-style approach, and the album consists of howling, feedback, readings of press clippings etc. Better than the any Beatles record (fight it out in the customer review box if you like!) and reissued by Secretly Canadian.

John Lennon / Yoko Ono
Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins

Two Virgins is generally known as one of the least popular albums John Lennon was ever involved with: yay! Yoko Ono’s avant-art practices are clearly the heaviest influence here on this abstract suite of musique concrete, bird-song, conversation and other less-than-traditionally-musical sounds. Excellent to see it reissued by Secretly Canadian!

Dead Can Dance
Garden of Arcane Delights / The John Peel Sessions

The one and only EP ever produced by Dead Can Dance, Garden Of Arcane Delights, gets a repressing on 4AD. The hard-to-define Australians sound plenty dark and ethereal on this 1984 release, one of their earliest. And to give you more Dead Can bang for your buck, this reissue also includes two Peel Sessions recorded around the same time.

The Hold Steady
Almost Killed Me

Almost Killed Me is the debut album of The Hold Steady, the band who managed to ascend bar-band rock’n’roll to a high art form. Craig Finn writes about the minutiae of young American life with a poet’s eye for detail, and this debut begins the saga of his character Charlemagne. Almost Killed Me has been remastered and bolstered with a handful of bonus tracks for this reissue on CD and (blue) vinyl.

The Hold Steady
Separation Sunday

Separation Sunday is the second album by The Hold Steady, the band who ascended bar-band rock’n’roll to a high art form. Craig Finn writes about the minutiae of young American life with a poet’s eye for detail, and Separation Sunday continues the stories of characters introduced in their debut album. Remastered and bolstered with a handful of bonus tracks for this reissue on CD and (white) vinyl.

Alessandro Alessandroni
Il Tempo Dello Spirito

The multi-instrumentalist and composer Alessandro Alessandroni was nothing if not diverse. Soundtracking Italian films such as spaghetti western El Puro, poliziottesco Sangue Di Sbirro, and Killer Nun. his independent compositions were just as diverse, Il Tempo Dello Spirito is an example of him mastering any form with choral and religious music, brooding and romanticised vocal works.

Beat Street - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: Volume 1

The 1984 movie Beat Street is all about New York’s burgeoning street hip-hop culture, which was really starting to sizzle at this point. Needless to say, the soundtrack is well stuffed with the same excellence as the film: Afrika Bambaataa, Treacherous Three, Grandmaster Melle Mel & The Furious Five and many more. Volume 1 of the soundtrack is reissued on vinyl by Music On Vinyl.

Fela Kuti
Afrodisiac

Nigerian afrobeat king Fela Kuti is known for having a huge catalogue, but over the years many of his albums have been nigh-on forgotten. The Knitting Factory label are working to change that now, individually reissuing a selection of albums for the first time on vinyl. Afrodisiac features the track ‘Alu Jon Jonki Jon’, which is an amazing jam even by Fela’s high high standards.

Silkworm
Lifestyle

Silkworm’s year 2000 seventh album makes a welcome return to circulation on vinyl with this Touch And Go reissue. Lifestyle is totally into both old-school classic rock and shambling indie-rock, meeting in the middle for an honest set of guitar-led American indie. Black vinyl or, while stocks last, pink vinyl, on Touch And Go.

Silver Apples
Decatur

Silver Apples‘ fifth album The Decatur, which was released in 1998, dispensed with individual tracks and just dived straight into a single-track, 40-minute-plus cosmic odyssey that gets into some pretty weird and wild places. This reissue marks the first time it has ever been pressed to vinyl, with both regular black or white-and-green splatter wax editions available.

Mark Lanegan
The Winding Sheet

Mark Lanegan’s first solo album is back on the streets again. The Winding Sheet dates back to 1990, when Lanegan was still immersed in the murky heart of grunge with Screaming Trees. His solo work mixes the dark weight of that music with a true songwriter’s dramatic touch. The Winding Sheet features a guest appearance from Kurt Cobain, and this Sub Pop reissue includes an extra track.

Sonic Youth
Sonic Youth

Once again available on CD, with bonus live tracks and studio outtake "Where The Red Fern Grows". The self-titled 1982 debut from Sonic Youth witnesses the legendary NYC noiseniks in embryonic form, more sparse than later manifestations and occasionally bearing a resemblance to the dubby, bass-heavy post-punk of Public Image Ltd as much as no-wave peers such as DNA and Teenage Jesus & The Jerks. Originally released via Glenn Branca’s Neutral label, the recordings feature Richard Edson on drums and form a crucial document of a band whose aesthetic was still in its early stages.

Joy Division
Substance 1977-1980

Funny when you reach the stage in a band’s life (or afterlife in this case I suppose) when even the compilations are being reissued. That said, the material remains crucial, always good to have the stuff available on wax. Substance 1977-1980 contains most of your Joy Division favourites, and has been expanded by two tracks.

Depeche Mode
Black Celebration

Black Celebration is Depeche Mode's fifth album, and was originally released in 1986. It is regarded by many fans of the band as their zenith, and with good, disturbing cause: the dark sound that was nascent on Black Celebration's predecessors, Construction Time Again and Some Great Reward was fully realised here.

Depeche Mode
101

101 captures Depeche Mode at the very end of a colossally long 1989 tour (yep, 101 shows…) and at the peak of their powers. So that means an hour and a half of mega-hits played out to an adoring crowd, with bangers including ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ and ‘People Are People’ in the mix. Reissued on a pair of 180g LPs by Colombia.

Antonio Carlos & Jocafi
Mudei De Ideia

The debut album of Antonio Carlos and Jocafi, who managed great success with their psychedelic take on samba and funk music in Brazil in the 70’s. Mudei De Ideia was initially released in 1971 and is reissued now by Mr Bongo, packaged in the psych-haze variation on the sleeve art (much nicer than the more straight-laced variation).

Zalla
Suspense

Another archival re-issue from the seemingly bottomless well of work produced by Piero Umiliano.  It's another album of library music that swings brought to life in his Rome laboratories. There's a big percussive element to these tracks which are spread over a double LP for maximum sound enjoyment but this is such as essential as all the other Umiliano re-issues in recent times.

Betty Harris
The Lost Queen Of New Orleans Soul

Despite working with some of the greatest on the New Orleans scene including Lee Dorsey, The Meters, and Allen Toussaint, Betty Harris never broke through commercially. She retired in 1970 and re-emerged in 2005, here we have a collection of her singles made and released 1964 to 1969. Fiery and soulful funk at it’s very best.

Cast Of Thousands

Guy Garvey's perennial plodders Elbow are having their back catalogue  re-issued which is good news for insomniacs and less good for anyone operating heavy machinery. Cast of Thousands was their second album originally released in 2003 which saw their brand of northern melancholy taking shape even if it there were several years left to wait before they reached mass acceptance.

Lou Reed
The RCA & Arista Album Collection

Please enjoy this enormous motherload of Lou Reed material: the entirety of the album-length work he produced for the RCA and Arista label over the course of 14 years. That’s 16 albums, including hits like Transformer and Street Hassle, experiments like Berlin and super-experiments like Metal Machine Music. 17 CDs, some prints, a poster and an 80-page book. That enough Lou Reed for ya?

Bob Dylan
Pure Dylan

Pure Dylan is another Bob Dylan compilation, except that this one draws focus away from the hits and onto some lesser-heard gems from the legend’s voluminous back catalogue. By presenting Dylan songs that haven’t become over-familiar, we can discover the great man anew. Double LP set on Legacy.

Miles Davis
The Essential Miles Davis

On vinyl to really get the most of his epic sound, The Essential Miles Davis covers his illustrious career with some of the defining songs, from his solo on "Generique", taken from the French film "Ascenseur pour L'echafaud" as well as songs from Bitches Brew and a Kind of Blue - one for the recent Jazz initiate. Double LP.

Game Theory
The Big Shot Chronicles

This isn't even the greatest Game Theory album but is still one of the finest most energetic bursts of oddball future thinking power pop seen in the '80s.  Scott Miller and pals had the route to my heart back then and this record contains some of his most direct pop bursts such as 'Erica's Word' and blitzkrieg opener 'Here It Is Tomorrow'. If you like early R.E.M, Sparks and Let's Active then this is for you. Contains loads of bonus tracks too.
