Emptyset
Medium

Subtext (Roly Porter, Vex’d) re-press Emptyset’s 2012 mini-LP (which means it’s an EP, then) Medium. The bass-bothering duo recorded these tracks on location in a ruined Gothic mansion near Gloucester, and the reverberant surroundings add extra depth to these moody cross-breeds of dubstep and electro-acoustic composition.

Behind Closed Doors
Exit Lines: The Brief History of Behind Closed Doors

Behind Closed Doors were a Baltimore band who popped up and then dissolved again with just a few years in the late 90’s. Exit Lines: The Brief History of Behind Closed Doors contains everything that the band ever recorded (which isn’t a lot), on red-with-black-splatter vinyl with a laser etching of the lyrics on the B-side. Fierce and complicated hardcore, reissued by Temporary Residence.

Philip Lewin
Am I Really Here All Alone?

Philip Lewin produced his album of sensitive and super-personal folk music Am I Really Here All Alone? in 1975. Thing is, it was only released as a private press LP, so he kind of was alone. His highly individual sound might appeal to fans of David Thomas Broughton, or anyone who treads their own path through folk music. Remastered and properly released on vinyl and CD by Tompkins Square.

Conrad Schnitzler
Filmmusik 2

German electronic legend (and member of both Tangerine Dream and Kluster) Conrad Schnitzler produced his Filmmusik tracks in 1975, without bothering to wait for any particular films to come along for the music to fit to. Consequently this music was mostly lost, until Bureau B’s excellent archive-digging skills were deployed. Now, they present Filmmusik 2.

Sammlung: Elektronische Kassettenmusik, Dusseldorf 1982-1989

Sammlung: Elektronische Kassettenmusik, Dusseldorf 1982-1989 is an astonishing compilation of ultra-rare early electronic experiments, industrial clangers and heavy drone created in Cold War Dusseldorf. Cheap synthesizers, disaffected young people and crushing modernist architecture helped create an incredible range of powerful and abrasive post-punk electronics. On CD and vinyl LP from Bureau B.

Odion Iruoje
Down To Earth

Odion Iruoje mostly stayed behind the desk, producing stacks of amazing music by Fela Kuti, Mono-Mono, Geraldo Pino and many more. But he couldn’t resist showing off his own mighty musical prowess at least once: Down To Earth is his only solo album, and it's a colourful mix of disco and  Nigerian funk. This Soundway reissue is the first time that Down To Earth has been in print for decades: what a treat.

The Clean
Getaway

The Clean’s Getaway album (geddit?) was released in 2001, by which point New Zealand’s finest underground indie boys were in a position to apply fancy production to their sound. They still sound gorgeously shambling however, e.g. just the way you want them to be. Two tracks even feature members of Yo La Tengo! Now Getaway is reissued in double CD / double LP editions by Merge.

Lift To Experience
The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads

We see plenty of these fancy deluxe box-set reissues, perhaps too many, but sometimes the lavish treatment is richly deserved, as in the case of Lift To Experience’s only album. The Texas-Jerusalem Crosswords is a strange and wonderful rock epic that you really need to hear. And if you already know and love it, the 2LP box-set also includes the band’s super-rare EP and Peel Session. Yeah!

Paul Johnson
Bump Talkin’

A cornerstone of Chicago house for three decades now, Paul Johnson’s 1995 debut LP gets a well-earned reissue here. Those familiar with the Windy City’s best will find plenty to love in these jackin’ cuts, and in a capable DJ’s hands the 8 rollers on show here will be a boon to any mix. Double LP.

Ekambi Brillant
African Funk Experimentals (1975-1982)

African Funk Experimentals (1975 - 1982) is one of the most enticing album titles I’ve heard in a good while, and the music does not disappoint. This is a compilation of Cameroonian musician Ekambi Brillant’s further-out funk tunes, and boy does that man know how to work a groove. Vinyl LP reissue on Africa Seven.

Townes Van Zandt
For The Sake Of The Song

For The Sake Of The Song was the debut album from troubled but brilliant singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Like a lot of records of the era it was somewhat overproduced as strings and other ephemera were slapped on top of his heartfelt songs. Van Zandt would later re-record most of these songs in more stripped down fashion but it is still a fascinating artefact of where it all started.

The Cure
Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me

The Cure’s seventh album, from 1987, was a sprawling, raucous 18-track double that gave them scope to hit all the bases. There’s doomy bombast (The Kiss), Eastern exotica (If Only Tonight We Could Sleep, The Snakepit), whimsical pop (Why Can't I Be You?), a Baudelaire rewrite (How Beautiful You Are…), straight funk (Hot Hot Hot!!!), some hints at what Disintegration would bring, and of course the mighty Just Like Heaven. 2LP reissue, as is only proper.

Glenn Jones
This Is The Wind That Blows It Out

Glenn Jones is a maestro of the American Primitive style of guitar playing: that sweet sweet Fahey-derived sound we all love so much. This Is The Wind That Blows It Out is Glenn’s 2004 album, now receiving a vinyl release for the first time courtesy of Thrill Jockey. Rich and beautiful music. Oh and by the way, the inner sleeve artwork includes the notes and tunings for all the songs in case you want to have a go yourself.

Roky Erickson
All That May Do My Rhyme

All That May Do My Rhyme is the 1995 album of 13th Floor Elevators originator Roky Erickson. It’s a pleasingly laid-back set, leaning more towards folky rootsy rock music than the fried-out psychedelia of much of his career, though that is also present in small tasty doses. The album has been reissued on CD and vinyl LP by the Play Loud label.

Animals That Swim
Workshy

Animals That Swim are one of those 90’s indie bands deeply beloved of a small gang of close fans, but for the most part comfortably under the radar. But these bands quietly created some of that decade’s best music, and are well worth revisiting, as One Little Indian are doing with this reissue of Workshy, which even throws in some previously unreleased tracks to sweeten the deal.

S. Brugnolini / G. Carnini
UST 7010 - Beat Drammatico Underground Pop Elettronico

The deeper you dig, the more apparent it becomes that almost everything in music was anticipated by obscure Italians cranking out mad library music in a studio somewhere. UST 7010 - Beat Drammatico Underground Pop Elettronico is a set of amazing, weird, groovy and exploratory electronic tracks by S. Brugnolini and G. Carnini. Reissued by Schema as part of their SCEB Series.

Kool Keith
Black Elvis / Lost In Space

Black Elvis / Lost in Space is Kool Keith’s fourth solo album, first released in 1999 (you probably could have guessed that released date from the cover art right?). The Ultramagnetic MC is as uniquely unusual as ever on this set, which sees him exploring multiple different personas, including the titular Black Elvis. Double LP reissue with insert, released by Music On Vinyl.

David Bowie
Young Americans

David Bowie lives on, with a whole bunch of reissues coming out on Parlophone. 1975’s Young Americans is the prime example of Bowie in ‘plastic soul’ mode, successfully mixing funky American styles with his strange white Englishness. Features ‘Fame’, ‘Across The Universe’ and the title track. CD / LP editions.

David Bowie
Station To Station

The records of the great  David Bowie live on, with several of reissues on Parlophone. 1976’s Station To Station is an entirely crucial piece of the Bowie canon, combining the funky soul he’d just be exploring with the German experimentalism he was about to dive headlong into. The ‘Thin White Duke’ returns on CD and 180g vinyl LP.

David Bowie
Diamond Dogs

A year or so on from his untimely (or timely depending on your take on things) death here we have a bunch of re-issues from the earlier part of the great man's career. Diamond Dogs was his eighth studio album which was inspired by Orwell's 1984. Here Bowie produced a glammy vision of a post apocalyptic world. As always Bowie moved on swiftly and this was to be his last glam tinged record.

A Momentary Lapse of Reason

The Pink Floyd vinyl reissuing machine rolls around to two of the group’s latter day albums, thus completing the roster. A Momentary Lapse Of Reason is their 1984 thirteenth album, and their first following the departure of Roger Waters. Lots more drum machines and other electronic techniques here than on most Floyd albums. It has been remastered, and is available on vinyl for the first time in decades on Pink Floyd Records.

Run-DMC’s self-titled debut album is a no-messing hip-hop classic. Need we say more? Reissued on vinyl by the Get On Down label.

Adrian Younge Presents The Delfonics
Adrian Younge Presents The Delfonics

Ghostface Killah-collaborator and purveyor of all gritty ‘70s sounds, Adrian Younge sought to re-invent Philly sweet-soul vanguards the Delfonics for the modern day. Teaming up with Delfonics’ William Hart, Younge presented the album in 2013 and its music has made it to Marvel’s Luke Cage on Netflix in the time since. Now it receives the reissue treatment with the LP out late January on Linear Labs.

Chavez
Gone Glimmering

Chavez frontman Matt Sweeney is probably better known than his cult '90s band. He recorded the album Superwolf with Will Oldham under his Bonnie Prince Billy moniker and was a member of Zwan with Slint's Dave Pajo and the Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan. It is now time to revisit what he did first namely gritty, grimy, excellent angular rock. Gone Glimmering is available on vinyl LP on Matador

Sly & The Family Stone
Stand!

Not too much we need to say about Sly & The Family Stone’s fourth LP really. Stand! remains the band’s critical and commercial peak. It’s shifted tonnes of units since it was first released in 1969, spawned a U.S. number one single in ‘Everyday People’, and has firmly ensconced itself in the ‘best albums of all-time’ conversation. Stand! has even been inducted into the U.S. Library Of Congress, so significant a record is it. Now reissued on two nice, heavy slabs of wax.

Laraaji
Celestial Vibration

The endearing and inspiring Laraaji started glowing with Celestial Vibration, his first record, which was originally released on the edge of the '70s under his  other name, Edward Larry Gordon. It's a stunning show of his early innovations, which have now been basked in as the crowning achievement of a new age renaissance -- his use of arpeggiated zither, circular percussive rhythms and trickling ambience pretty much exists unto no other musician.

Sing It High, Sing It Low : Tumbleweed Records 1971-1973

Here is a compilation that pulls out the forgotten highlights of the underappreciated Tumbleweed Records label, which operated for just two years between 1971 and 1973. As the name might suggest, folky americana was the focus of the label’s energies, and Sing It High, Sing It Low contains ten excellent songs from the roster. Released by Light In The Attic with their usual array of old photos and fascinating liner notes.

Cavern of Anti-Matter
Blood Drums

When Tim Gane of Stereolab makes a new album and only issues 500 vinyl copies of it on a small Berlin-based label you can imagine that there would be a fair few unhappy people that missed out. Worry no more. Blood Drums, the debut album by Tim Gane’s post-Stereolab band Cavern Of Anti-Matter is now reissued his own Duophonic label. As with Stereolab, Gane showcases his love of vintage analogue instruments to create a one-off experiment that was so good it turned into a full time band.

Anal Magic and Rev. Dwight Frizzell
Beyond The Black Crack

Beyond The Black Crack is a strange old record from the mid-70’s: impressively, it is strange enough to match up to the given artist’s name Anal Magic and Rev. Dwight Frizzell. Cracked-up electronics and fizzling free jazz are involved in the mixture, which was heavily treated and manipulated after the fact, resulting in the succulent mess you see before you. A weirdo classic, remastered and reissued by Paradigm discs

Depeche Mode
Playing The Angel

Depeche Mode keep it clinical with Playing The Angel, a self-explanatory live record that takes choice cuts from records such as Songs Of Faith and Devotion and Violator and puts them to the stage. Theatrical but brooding and ironed out in every discipline, this is pretty rudimentary stuff from one of the greatest synth-pop bands of all time.

Lamb’s Bread is now getting reissued to CD and LP by the Greensleeves label.
