Will Beeley
Gallivantin'

Will Beeley put his Gallivantin’ album out private press style in an edition of 200 LPs back in 1971, making it an extremely rare find. But now happy days are here again: Gallivantin’ has received a lovely vinyl and CD reissue from the Tompkins Square label, making his wonderful alt-country originals (and radical covers of Bob Dylan and Buffy Sainte-Marie) available to average punters again.

Big Star
The Best Of Big Star

If trawling through the classic-era Big Star's mammoth collection of three albums is too much for you then consider this handy 'best of' which collects tracks from each to showcase Alex Chilton's prime power pop band. With songs such as 'Back of My Car' and 'September Gurls' in their locker it's still rather hard to fathom why they only sold about twelve records.

Deca
Mass

Deca’s music has been quietly doing its thing in the underground of Italy’s electronic experimental music scene for years. This album of Roland synthesiser explorations dates back to the late 80’s, when it was released only in a very limited cassette edition. Mass is full of the dark pulse and throb of the 80’s electro era, but expressed in Deca’s own special way. Vinyl reissue on Mondo Groove.

Marilyn

Remastered specifically for vinyl re-pressing, Marilyn is the 1985 creation of Italian disco project of Flying. This is clearly the brainchild of two minds that were locked firmly in the science behind legendary synth instrumentation such as the Roland Jupiter-8 and the Elka Synthex. Retro gold.

Graham Day & The Forefathers
Triple Distilled

Graham Day is something of a garage rock legend coming from the same Medway scene that spawned the likes of Billy Childish. Damaged Goods have here reissued this 2007 album which contains twelve examples of the sort of high energy lo-fi garage that he peddled in earlier bands such as the Prisoners. No frills lo-fi recordings to blow away all cobwebs.

Studio One Scorcher

Soul Jazz’s superlative catalogue of archival compilations goes deep and wide, but their Studio One series, documenting the reggae-derived musics of the renowned Jamaican label of the same name, remain some of their finest sets. Reissued here is Studio One Scorcher, a hot suite of instrumentals from the likes of Jackie Mittoo and The Soul Vendors. Triple LP reissue.

Modest Mouse
The Fruit That Ate Itself

Originally released in 1997, ‘The Fruit That Ate By Itself is the third EP from American indie rock luminaries Modest Mouse. Produced by founder of K records- Beat Happening’s Calvin Johnson- this EP is more in line with Johnson’s past work, recalling the playful indie-funk of Dub Narcotic System, and it is built around a leaner and meaner sound in comparison to their earlier material, with the emphasis being less on noise and more on grooves.

Mirror

The second album by Revolutionary Army of The Infant Jesus here receives a reissue that gets this music onto vinyl for the first time ever! 1991’s Mirror, titled after the Andrei Tarkovsky film, is a strange, deep, and stylistically varied work that invokes religious music, spiritual drones, field recordings, and so much more. Flying Calvittos
Goodbye You Spaghetti Punks

Flying Calvittos were a super-obscure Australian underground band who made this EP in 1980 and then more or less vanished. Goodbye You Spaghetti Punks is a noisy weirdo-punk slice of scrunch, charmingly free of much concern for neatness or anything else like that. This EP has never been reissued before, but is now pressed up in an edition of 300 7”s, thanks to the Insolito label.

Function Underground: The Black & Brown American Rock Sound 1969-1974

Function Underground: The Black & Brown AMerican Rock Sound does excellent and necessary work in bringing to greater prominence some of the amazing non-white rock and roll music made in America between 1969 and 1974. This material is absolutely scorching, and most of it is also extremely rare: generally private pressings receiving their first reissue here. Get it on vinyl from Now-Again.

Gerry & The Holograms
Gerry & The Holograms

Gerry & The Holograms are a fascinating footnote in Manchester music history: their eponymous main song allegedly influenced New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ and was much beloved of Frank Zappa, and yet the quasi-novelty synth-pop group is scarcely known. This release of their only full-length record might change that. Vinyl reissue on Cache Cache.

Bert Jansch
Living In The Shadows Part 2: On The Edge Of A Dream

Part two of the Living In The Shadows series, sub-titled On The Edge Of A Dream, contains the final recordings of Bert Jansch. This is everything the folk legend recorded in the 2000’s: the three albums Crimson Moon, Edge Of A Dream and The Black Swan, plus an extra disc of unreleased material. Presented in equally beautiful 4CD and 4LP editions, each packed with an informative book.

Grotto
At Last

Grotto are an awesome Nigerian Afro-funk-rock band from the 70’s, who remarkable recorded their debut album At Last when they were only about 16. Rose McDowall
Cut With The Cake Knife

Rose McDowall was a member of much-loved indie darlings Strawberry Switchblade, and Cut With A Cake Knife compiles songs that were originally intended for that group's second album. Instead, McDowall recorded them herself over 1988 and 1989. Lovely and bright indie pop from an expert of the form. CD or swirly vinyl on Night School.

Lost Train Blues

Could there be a more quintessential subject for a blues compilation to centre around than the train? Unlikely. Lost Train Blues contains recordings made by the likes of John and Alan Lomax, which have been languishing in the vaults of the American Folklife Center for half a century or more. Many have never previously been released. Raw and wonderful blues recordings, accompanied by an informative booklet. LP on Jalopy Records.

Miraculous Mule
Blues Uzi

Miraculous Mule filled in the gap between their debut Deep Fried and their new full-length Two Tonne Testimony with 2014’s nice little mini album, now reissued. Singles (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) - Deluxe Edition

Released in 1992, and set in the middle of grunge heaven Seattle, Singles starred Bridget Fonda and Matt Dillon but more importantly for us, it’s soundtrack. Including tracks from Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Citizen Dick, Mudhoney, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains this is a hell of a compilation, nevermind what the film is about. Both versions come with a bonus CD with 18 rare and unreleased tracks from many of the same artists.

Death
Scream Bloody Gore

Scream Bloody Gore is, of course, exactly what it says on its blood-splattered 1987-released tin; hideously dark riffs alongside off-the-handle screeches. The aptly-named Death may appear cliche in the 21st century, but in their day the group sat amongst the true pioneers of their ear-scrapingly abrasive genre.

The Van Pelt
Stealing From Our Favorite Thieves

As heroes of NYC's indie-rock scene in the 90's, The Van Pelt only thrived in the world's concrete jungle for four years; but their lasting impression still burns away. Stealing From Our Favorite Thieves was their thwack of a debut, and here it is repressed from original recording for the first time.

Vic Chesnutt
Silver Lake

U.S-born songwriter Vic Chesnutt's legacy is still very much alive and kicking. Silver Lake is one of the most impressive of his whopping 17-album-large repertoire. Initially released in 2003, the full-length perfectly encapsulates a witty vision of America in Chesnutt's pleasant indie-folk.

Arthur Verocai
Encore

Arthur Verocai’s debut album is an obscure hidden classic of funky Brazilian samba-soul music, released to not-enough interest in 1972 but rediscovered in 2004 by Harmonic 313. Consequently, Verocai returned in 2007 with Encore, an album of new compositions recorded with an ensemble who understood his vision. Now reissued by Far Out Recordings.
