Original Hip Hop Classics Presented by Sugar Hill Records does exactly what it says on the tin, delivering treats from Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel and many more over two slabs of vinyl. Out on the Sanctuary label.

The Obsessed
The Obsessed

Doom metal doesn’t get much truer or more essential than the debut from the legendary Maryland trio. Though recorded in 1985, the album wasn’t released until 1990, after frontman Wino had left Saint Vitus and decided to revive his former band. Whereas Vitus were defined by Dave Chandler’s ultra-minimal, icy riffing, The Obsessed’s mid-paced groove has a more bluesy, soulful and subtly psychedelic bent. Less well known than some of their influences and successors, but necessary for fans of Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Cathedral et al. The double CD includes an ‘84 demo and ‘85 live set, which are also included as a download with the LP version.

Chris Gantry
At The House Of Cash

Chris Gantry was a songwriter to the stars and  performer in his own right. He’d been offered lodgings at Johnny Cash’s Nashville home in the early ‘70s after some police/weed trouble. He also convinced Cash to let him record in his studio. At The House of Cash was the result and is one of Nashville’s more leftfield albums. Too weird even for the ‘drug people’ according to Cash. Because it’s different nature, it’s only seeing the light of day now. Think some sort of more cosmic version of Tim Buckley jamming with The Incredible String Band.

Lonely The Brave clearly love the material they released on 2016’s Things Will Matter album, but they also reckon they could have done better. So they decided to do it again! Here is a Redux version of the album, reinventing and redeveloping those songs into somewhat new shapes. Nice approach, more bands should do it. On Hassle.

I'm on My Journey Home: Sacred Harp Singing, 1927-1938

Sacred Harp Singing is a potent American choral song form that emphasises the social. I’m on My Journey Home compiles some vintage recordings (dating from between 1927 and 1938) onto cassette. The sound quality may not be hi-def, but the spiritual power of these performances shines on through. On Death Is Not The End.

Throbbing Gristle
The Taste of TG (A Beginner's Guide to the Music of Throbbing Gristle)

Intrigued by these noise-industrial-experimental pioneers you keep hearing about but a bit intimidated by their spiky and confusing discography? Well worry no more, and come get a Taste of TG with this ‘Beginner’s Guide’ compilation, featuring highlights from throughout the Throbbing Gristle oeuvre. Not quite ‘greatest hits’, but all the big numbers are here. Reissued by Mute.

Basement 5
In Dub

Dub companion to the reissue of the London post-punk band’s sole LP, the Martin Hannett-produced 1965-1980. In some cases the craze of using dub techniques to expand the aesthetic horizons of guitar bands seemed opportunist or overly optimistic, but Basement 5’s original rhythms were solid enough, and the basslines heavy enough, for that approach to make sense in this case. It’s a high-energy half hour that emphasises the extremes of Hannett’s production and a worthwhile companion piece to the parent LP.

Penguin Cafe
The Red Book

Arthur Jeffe’s continuation of his father Simon’s legacy as Penguin Café is impressive. The contents of The Red Book are glittering, complex instrumentals, oft led by piano and strings but featuring quite a list of instruments. Lying somewhere between modern classical minimalism and pop, these compositions aren’t too far from post-rock. Fortunately, the tedious, po-faced overstatement common in post-rock is largely absent here.

The Jazz Butcher
The Wasted Years

The Jazz Butcher was an indie band born in the 80’s, and here we have their fantastic earliest albums, as released for the Glass label. That’ll be Bath Of Bacon, A Scandal In Bohemia, Sex And Travel and Distressed Gentlefolk then, all gathered together in their strange idiosyncratic glory, and remastered too. 4CD hardback book package on Fire.

Scott Walker

Out of the ashes of The Walker Brothers, came this, the debut album by one of the most singular and original talents to ever grace pop music. Featuring lush arrangemnts of songs by the likes of Jaques Brel and Tim Hardin, as well as three of Walker's own compositions, all touched by Scott's uniquely dark aura.

Jackie Shane
Any Other Way

A pioneering figure who is thoroughly deserving of the retrospective interest in her career, Any Other Way is the first collection of Jackie Shane’s work approved by the artist herself. Though at the time her work barely got beyond the clubs of Toronto, Shane’s strong voice and stronger presence as a transgender woman in 1960’s North America has seen her influence spread far over the years. This LP brings together live recordings and her run of 45s, all of which demonstrate her unique command of soul, funk and r&b. Includes three previously unreleased tracks.

Basement 5

Hard to believe that a prime post-punk era Martin Hannett production has languished in relative obscurity for so long. Basement 5 were a short-lived, all-black London band operating in a similar dub / punk territory to early Public Image Ltd and Killing Joke. At one point fronted by Don Letts before photographer Dennis Morris took over, this, their sole LP, features Blockhead "Gentleman" Charles Charles sitting in on drums. There’s a nice balance between a heavy and precise rhythm section and scratchy, sloppy guitar and vocals, lyrically politicised as you’d expect, with Hannett applying some effects familiar from his work with Joy Division and others. The CD version features the In Dub EP, available separately on vinyl.

Junior Byron
Trying To Hold On

Continuing its mission to unearth and reissue unaffordably essential Caribbean cuts, Culture of Soul present Junior Byron’s 1984 groover 'Trying To Hold On'. Part reggae, part disco boogie, all party starter, Running Back main man Gerd Janson is also on hand to combine the two original versions into a megamix for more modern floors.

Leave Home

The first four Ramones albums are essential as far as any punk fan is concerned. 'Leave Home' is their second album and it saw the New York leather jacket sporting legends double tracking their sound for a more polished sound than their iconic debut. The rapid-fire rhythms, short pace and catchy bubblegum melodies are still more than apparent, as are the hits. You'll find 'Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment', 'Pinhead', 'Swallow My Pride', 'Commando' and 'California Sun' on this record which spits in the face of any idea of a sophomore slump. "One two three four!"

Pearls Before Swine
One Nation Underground

We've had Sergeant Peppers and Their Satanic Majesties Request 50th anniversary specials but now it's time for something much more out there. It's a big re-issue of this legendary psychedelic folk group who in 1967 produced this almost impossible to characterise blend of Donovan style folk whimsy, repetitive minimalism and organ driven punk.

The Crystal Method

With the American love for so-called EDM still apparently surging, this is a great time to be reissuing Vegas, the debut album of The Crystal Method. Originally dropping in 1997, Vegas features the duo’s attempts to absorb and americanise the big beat goings on happening back in the UK at that time. And it seems the world is very keen on big beats once again… Double LP reissue from Universal.

Conan have committed their filthy, ocean-sized sound to wax (and the slightly less cvlt compact disc) twice thus far- with more fetid output always on the horizon. First came the hulking mass of debut album Horseback Battle Hammer (Throne, Aurora Borealis), followed by a split with like-minded sludge-lords, Slomatics (Head of Crom, Burning World). In December 2011 Conan returned to the remote wilderness of Foel Studio, Wales and into the capable hands of producer Chris Fielding for their next album which is to be released on Burning World Records in Spring 2012.

The CD edition also features an extra disc of juicy rarities from the period. On Parlophone.

The Smiths
The Queen Is Dead (2017 Master) [Deluxe Edition]

Another magical example of when a single LP gets turned into a 5LP box set. The Smiths 4th best album finally gets the big set treatment with demos, b-sides live tracks and a DVD featuring Derek Jarman's short film made to accompany the original release. A must for all fans of this most special of bands. "Slip them into different sleeves! Buy both, and feel deceived".

Johnny Cash
I Walk The Line

Classic Cash from 1968! I Walk The Line actually features re-recorded versions of various songs that were already favourites by this point, such as the title track, originally recorded in 1958. Johnny was still in very fine form at this point, and I Walk The Line makes for a great early hits collection. Reissued on vinyl by Columbia.

Charlemagne Palestine
Strumming Music

Essential vinyl reissue of Charlemagne Palestine's seminal 1974 LP 'Strumming Music'. A mesmerising work of classic 20th Century minimalism, that originally appeared on the legendary French Shandar imprint (home to Philip Glass, Sun Ra, La Monte Young, Terry Riley etc.) Original copies sell for in excess of £160 so it's a real treat to have this truly transcendent work from this visionary artist once again available on it's original format. At once simple and complex, this profoundly beautiful music still sounds like a magic carpet ride through the heavens. A physically demanding performance recorded in his Manhattan loft - one which yields maximum beauty from the simplicity of his Bösendorfer Imperial grand piano and sustain pedal. A masterclass in the hypnotic beauty of repetition and nuance. This new edition has been licensed from FGL Productions, remastered by Equus, cut by Rashad Becker and includes an insert with liner notes by Julian Cowley.

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx

Rae's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is an early Wu-Tang solo classic, responsible for sequels and known for classic sampling from the RZA in primetime. This is one of the Wu's most intricately told stories, a record about drugs in New York told through some of the best hooks with some of the best singles.

World Of Pooh
The Land Of Thirst

Cult classic underground indie-pop from San Francisco's World Of Pooh. 1989’s The Land Of Thirst was in fact the only album they were ever able to release, and has been vanishingly rare in physical editions for a long time now. But this record is so brimming with interesting and exciting indie action, it really needed a reissue. And here it is! On Starlight Furniture Co.

Bark Psychosis

'Hex' formed part of the first wave of post-rock made whilst the likes of Mogwai were in short trousers but it has more in common with the splintered atmospheres of late period Talk Talk, a meticulously conceived masterpiece of mood and emotion. Now expertly re-mastered and re-pressed, this is an essential purchase for fans of exploratory, forward thinking music.

Jon Hassell
Dream Theory In Malaya (Fourth World Volume Two)

Here is an album that displays Jon Hassell’s early conception of Fourth World music: an attempt to step outside of rigid cultural boundaries. Dream Theory In Malaya was recorded with Brian Eno and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan on board, and uses an engaging combination of electronically-affected trumpet, field recordings, glitches and drones, and much more besides. Reissued with a bonus track, on Glitterbeat.

Emperor Tomato Ketchup (Expanded Edition)

'Emperor Tomato Ketchup' is often held up as the crowning achievement of post-rock/psychedelic outfit Stereloab, fronted by the bizarre, left-field songwriting of Laetitia Sadier and Tim Gane. On 'Emperor Tomato Ketchup', the band's affection for pop music and for newer strands of experimental rock intersect, making for a record both more accessible and ambitious than the three noise pop records that preceded it.

No-one is really queuing up these days to cover the Smiths but a few years ago excitement mounted as the likes of Joyzipper, the Wedding Present Sixpence None the Richer excitedly recreated those legendary songs. It was all collected on a powder blue 2LP edition which may or may not be as sought after as a Tommy Robinson commemorative tea towel.

Half Japanese
Half Gentlemen / Not Beasts

The very first record from the Fair brothers’ cult band Half Japanese. Half Japanese are notable for a number of reasons, one of which is making their debut a triple album! This set captures the whole thing, as well as another CD of bonus tracks. They are also notable for their refusal to play (or tune) their guitars properly, as you’ll hear (note that this is a good thing).

Chaos A.D. (Expanded Edition)

It is remastered and features 17 bonus tracks including 9 face-melting live tracks and a memorable cover of Black Sabbath’s Symptom of the Universe. Essential metal.

Skinny Puppy

As well as the fact that cEvin key found a unique and innovative way of spelling Kevin, Skinny Puppy were musically innovative too fusing bits of new wave, techno and film noir into a sample based industrial racket. This is their debut missive and has now been re-unleashed on vinyl for the first time in 25 years.

The Zodiac
Cosmic Sounds

Massive Attack

Mezzanine is a dark masterpiece, as black, as glossy and as intimidating as the beetle creature on its cover. Angel and Teardrop turn up on TV often enough (and rightly so), but the whole album is worth digging into for its uneasy moods.
