Momus
Create I - Procreate: Remastered & Expanded Edition

Create I - Procreate: Remastered and Expanded by Momus collects together the Scottish singer/songwriter’s first three albums for Creation Records: The Poison Boyfriend (1987), Tender Pervert (1988) and Don’t Stop The Night (1989), with bonus tracks and liner notes by Momus himself and collaborator Anthony J Reynolds. The Poison Boyfriend was highly regarded by NME at the time of its release and has since been heralded as one of the best 100 albums of the 1980s. 3CD set on Cherry Red.

Propaganda
A Secret Wish

A Secret Wish is the debut LP from German synth pop group Propaganda who were taken under the wing of producer Trevor Horn and signed to his ZTT imprint. The album yielded a superb timeless hit in 'Duel' but also contains much more inventive synth pop including an inspired cover of Josef K's 'Sorry For Laughing'.

Pino Donaggio
Don’t Look Now

Classic film, classic soundtrack: Nicolas Roeg’s 1973 classic Don’t Look Now was accompanied by the cinematic debut of composer Pino Donaggio, who hails from Venice itself. The winding waterways, the mourning of the dead, the glimmer of terrifying hope… It's all here in Pino’s score. Released with new artwork on Silva Screen.

Fondation
Les Cassettes 1980-1983

A wonderful compilation of tracks from Fondations' early 80s cassette releases. Feeling looser than the strictly metered synth experiments of the time there's a human quality here that works in harmony with the lofi sound. Great for fans of Mort Garson, Tangerine Dream or, why not hey, Jean Michel Jarre's earlier work.

Holger Czukay
Movie!

Holger Czukay, the bass player in goddamn Can in case you weren’t aware, released solo album Movie in 1979. It isn’t a soundtrack album, but Holger does pull in samples from whatever was on the TV that day, building up colourful and lively sound-worlds around them. Groovy and texturally interesting all the way through. Reissued on Gronland.

Biosphere
Shenzhou

Shenzou is Biosphere’s 2002 record, upon which most of the tracks were built out of scratchy old vinyl samples of Debussy recordings, which lends the album a Gas-like classical flavour beneath all that nice shimmering looping ambience. This reissue of Shenzou also contains the album The Samphire Tower in full, as a bonus! Double CD and triple LP editions.

Townes Van Zandt
Rear View Mirror

Some 27 years ago, master singer/songwriter and master of sadness, Townes Van Zandt began re-recording his best-loved songs for a three disc anthology which ultimately failed to appear. Rear View Mirror was originally released on Austin-based label, Sundown in 1993. It collects together 17 tracks from those sessions, which, in origin, date back to 1968. Double LP on Fat Possum

Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac

Reissue of Fleetwood Mac’s classic eponymous 1975 album, the first they released with their most iconic line-up, and which laid the foundations for their world-beating future. The album is available on CD, deluxe CD, and in a very deluxe box set featuring alternate takes, live recordings, and a surround and stereo mix.

Dinosaur L
In The Corn Belt

A key Arthur Russell track from the album 24→24 Music, mixed by Larry Levan, and split over two sides of a 7”. Funky layers of percussion, disco drums, exploratory bass, psych guitar, arch quasi-operatic vox and spacey keyboards that seem to connect a lineage from Herbie Hancock to Drexciya. So much going on that it should feel cluttered, but remains strikingly spacious and airy. When it shudders to a halt it feels like a spell being broken.

Oval
Dok

High quality vintage ambient glitch electronics from Oval circa 1998, reissued as part of Thrill Jockey’s twenty-fifth birthday. Dok is a typically gorgeous suite of shimmering, wavering soundscapes, constructed from sources so deeply processed as to take on an entirely new character. This reissue is the first time Dok has been made available on vinyl since its initial release.

Dinosaur L
Go Bang!

‘I wanna see all my friends at once’ goes the refrain of this classic slice of Arthur Russell-helmed (for it is he) weirdo-disco. Straight from the heart of '80s New York, Russell’s Dinosaur L project was a compelling mixture of the disco and experimental scenes of the time, as evinced by this banger (geddit?).

Butterfly Child
Onomatopoeia

One of those records where you have to mention the album art. There you go, I've mentioned it. It's very good. Butterfly Child's Onomatopoeia was first released in 1993 but has been given a smooth remaster on Dell'Orso. A great mix of electronica and post-rock and for fans of Bark Psychosis...I suppose? Available on double vinyl LP and CD.

MAGMA
Retrospektïẁ

In the world of Zeuhl gods Magma, things tend to occur on a large scale, and that’s certainly the case with this remastered Southern Lord boxset. The three volumes of Retrospektïẁ captured a trio of 1980 concerts at the Olympia in Paris. We begin with the debut appearance of Theusz Hamtaahk, the first part of a similarly-titled trilogy. The third part is Mekanik Destruktiw Komandoh, released as a studio album in its own right, and featured in even more explosive form here. The three-LP set is rounded out with a version of Hhai and two more previously unrecorded tracks. A hefty testament to the unique vision of Christian Vander and the fine musicians and vocalists who helped bring that vision to life.

Sun Ra & His Solar Arkestra
The Magic City

Fully restored and then some, this pressing of Sun Ra's behemoth Magic City goes long on its history via free jazz aficionado Ben Young. Notable for its near-thirty minute skronk sprawl title track, the record became something of a kept secret, the piece never getting a live outing due to its unique, impermeable sound.

Iganda
Mark of Slavery / Slow Down

Three decades ago there was a thriving reggae scene in the Midlands. Iganda's 'Mark of Slavery' / 'Slow Down' is a sick cut, the groove bristling with dancehall energy and the vocals full of power and soul. Coming out on green vinyl - the original pressing, by the way, will currently set you back £175 on Discogs.

Tokyo Nights: Female J-Pop Boogie Funk 81-88

With Japan’s economic boom of the 1980s came the neon wonderlands of metropolises like Tokyo and Osaka. These futuristic cities, all bright lights and new money, needed a soundtrack, and in the genre of City Pop they got one. An amalgamation of electro-funk, r 'n' b, techno-pop and soul, City Pop’s quirky style has worn well and now shows up in the aesthetics of culture-vultures like Mac Demarco and Ariel Pink. On this double-LP, Cultures of Soul chronicle some of the best female exponents of the genre.

The Courtneys
The Courtneys

The Courtneys are from Vancouver, but it’s immediately obvious that they’ve found a fitting home on New Zealand’s Flying Nun. Their 2013 debut, reissued here on black or limited blue vinyl, showcases an unfussy garage indie style that doesn’t slavishly ape the Dunedin Sound, but can be filed neatly next to the likes of The Clean and The Chills.

First Aid Kit

Sweedish folk duo First Aid Kit deliver their debut: Drunken Trees. This quietly accomplished mini LP centres itself around an acoustic sound. At no point does this record make a concerted effort at hiding an undeniably impressive vocal capacity. This is a mightily impressive sounding record.

Palace
Lost In The Night

Alt-rockers with blues in the heart and soul in their lungs, Palace are set to release their first ever EP, 'Lost In The Night'. The Londoners mix and match guitars that are floaty and meditative with louder, rawer excursions that reminisce over bands like Buffalo Springfield. BBC Session 1971

The former Velvet Underground icon (her name is even an anagram of that) recorded this session for John Peel’s Top Gear show in 1971. Featuring four tracks from her John Cale-produced, harmonium-driven albums The Marble Index, Desertshore and The End, it was previously released on specialist Peel Sessions outlet Strange Fruit, but has been out of print for decades. Thom Yorke
Tomorrow's Modern Boxes

Originally released 5 seconds ago, here's a white vinyl luxury re-issue of the album Thom originally released on Bit Torrent in his latest attempt to re-badge the music industry. The music on record makes no such grand statements, comprised of some of Yorke's most minimal and quiet electronic work yet, continuing his descent from dramatic synth artist on 'The Eraser' and modest groover on 'AMOK' to something of an electronica hybrid artist. Out in time for Christmas.

Arcade Fire
Arcade Fire

First reissued in 2005 after the success of Funeral, Arcade Fire’s debut EP gets a second CD reissue makeover for any fans unwilling to buy a grubby second-hand copy on Discogs. Although Arcade Fire is humbler and lower-fi than what the band’s audience is used to these days, Butler & Co.’s passion for po-faced ostentatiousness is already audible in these early recordings.

Roy Harper
Come Out Fighting Ghengis Smith

Harper’s Shel Talmy-produced second album, from 1968, is a psychedelic folk record that’s undeniably of its time, but also forward-looking, richly flavoured with idiosyncrasies and driven by free-flowing musical ambition. All this is evident on the meandering, raga-esque melody of Freak Street, the brooding, fourth-wall-breaking title track and the extended, episodic memoir of Circle. 180g reissue in deluxe gatefold with new artwork and notes.

Looking At The Pictures In The Sky - The British Psychedelic Sounds of 1968

You know it’s gonna be a good psychedelic album when the soundclip makes your computer freeze from its layers of fuzzy guitar and echoed vocals. Looking At The Pictures In The Sky - The British Psychedelic Sounds of 1968 is an epic tome; a 3CD boxset with a 44-page booklet detailing the psychedelic scene over one year in Britain (and Ireland!). Tracks from The Factory, Fleur de Lys, The Barrier and Boeing Duveen give an idea of just how woozy we’re going here.

Washington Phillips and His Manzarene Dreams

On Dust-to-Digital’s first release they featured a few tracks by Texan blues musician Washington Phillips of which very little was actually known, even less than his mystery homemade instrument that he called The Manzarene. Enlisting the help of researcher Michael Corcoran they tracked down the story of his life, songs and instruments and put it all into this glorious book and CD combo.

Sparks
Kimono My House

Demented electro-pop duo Sparks celebrate 40 years of sharp wit and falsetto crooning. The deluxe reissue of Kimono My House adds new material and essays to the endlessly weird and catchy chamber pop arrangements, strange productions and glamorous theatrics within. What more do you want; there’s a song called "Thank God It’s Not Christmas".

Sparks
Indiscreet

Indiscreet was the fifth album by the wonderfully weird duo Sparks. It was originally released in 1975 as the follow-up to Propaganda and produced by none other than Tony Visconti. Whilst it didn’t meet the commercial heights of Propaganda, or Kimono My House, which was arguably their best-known work, it was an artistic success - stylistically an odd, yet fantastic mix of glam rock and show tunes.

Sparks
Big Beat

Big Beat was the 6th album by Sparks. It was the follow up to the rather fabulous Indiscreet. Like its predecessor, it failed to reach satisfactory sales figures, but don’t let that put you off, things were different in 1976, this was probably buried under a pile of fresh punk. It led to them appearing, and playing two songs, in the 1976 disaster film Rollercoaster after Kiss declined the offer.

Mastodon
Once More ‘Round the Sun

'Once More 'Round The Sun' is Mastodon's sixth record, produced by rock and metal professor Nick Raskulinecz, who has worked with a variety of crossover metal bands, including Deftones, as well as proggier outfits like Rush. The record continues to push a version of Mastodon into the public with clean vocals, catchy riffs and an ear for mainstream rock, though certain tracks like "High Road" retain their penchant for sludgy metal with dark tones. Brann Dailor has said what he really wanted 'Once More 'Round The Sun' to be is "huge and weird". Features contributions from the Coathangers and Scott Kelly of Neurosis. Tracks: Tread Lightly The Motherload High Road Once More 'Round the Sun Chimes at Midnight Asleep in the Deep Feast Yopur Eyes Aunt Lisa Ember City Halloween Diamond in the Witch House

The Pretty Things
Greatest Hits

The Pretty Things have evolved through several genres of music since the British R&B of their early ‘60s releases. This even included a stab at New Wave in the early ‘80s. Their most notable foray was into psychedelic rock, however, with the 1968 psych-rock opera SF Sorrow. The band featured guitarist Dick Taylor, who played bass in an early incarnation of The Rolling Stones. Although this new Greatest Hits anthology only contains a few actual chart hits, the set documents the music of one of the UK’s greatest ever rock bands. LP, 2CD with extra disc ‘Live at The 100 Club’ and CD.

Jun Fukamachi
Nicole (86 Spring and Summer Collection - Instrumental Images)

Super-rare (eg never actually officially released for sale before) library music from Japan, 1986. Jun Fukamachi was commissioned by the Nicole fashion brand to introduce their 86 Spring and Summer Collection, and he did so with these slick funky tracks, which have a profoundly 80’s sheen to them.
