Dr. John
The Sun, Moon & Herbs

Recorded in London but with a New Orleans spirit, “The Sun, Moon & Herbs” arrived towards the end of Dr. John’s voodoo-inspired period, its heavy, foggy atmosphere and nods to Cajun folklore capturing the magic and spirit of the city even from afar. Hypnotic percussion, invigorating choruses, and creepy-cum-beautiful snapshots of The Big Easy.

Roy Harper
Stormcock

Roy Harper (via his Science Friction label) is doing us all a valuable favour by getting a few classic early Harper records back into vinyl circulation again for the first time in decades, to celebrate Harper’s 75th birthday. Stormcock is a wonderful album with some particularly epic long tracks. The audio has been remastered, and is presented alongside lyrics and liner notes.

Hiroshi Sato
Orient

This is a welcome reissue of Hiroshi Sato’s Orient, a record whose first edition was released in 1979 and still fetches three-figure prices on Discogs. This is its first vinyl pressing outside of Japan. Sato & pals are producing some dangerously funky, feel-good J-synthpop here. White noise faded gently to evoke the sea, vocoders, pentatonic strings, analogue envelopes and excessively knobbly bass - it’s all here.

Ghosts Of Christmas Past

Who doesn’t love a good old alternative Christmas album? Les Disques du Crepuscule’s one Ghosts Of Christmas Past was first released in 1981, and has been updated in 1982 and also 2015. This version features old material from the likes of Aztec Camera and The Durutti Column, and new 2015 stuff from Gavin Bryars, Section 25 and many more, all getting festive. Double LP release.

Tori Amos
Under The Pink

A reissue campaign of famed singer-songwriter Tori Amos’s work begins with her first albums, pressed to 180g vinyl by Rhino. Under The Pink is her second album, first released in 1994, hitting #1 in the UK. Contains the hit single ‘Cornflake Girl’, as well as ‘Past The Mission’, which features vocals from Trent Reznor.

Leroy Hutson
Anthology: 1972 - 1984

We’re happy to let Acid Jazz bring us Anthology: 1972 - 1984, a comprehensive Leroy Hutson compilation. The collection brings together his Curtom recordings with two newly unearthed tracks. His Newark home was a rich, fertile source of Soul -- including George Clinton’s Parliaments and the Manhattans. Hutson was soon working with Carla Thomas and Donny Hathaway. His solo Curtom sides swiftly became sought after and inspirational to many. Double LP / single CD.

Sperm
50th Erection I ‐ Collected Works 1967‐1970

This would appear to be (part one of) the comprehensive Sperm experience, comprising multiple albums, EPs and previously-unreleased selections from the earliest years of these Finnish avant-nonsensers. 50th Erection 1 collects all the material from the years 1967 to 1970, including a solo LP from Sperm founder Pekka Airaksinen. Some very intriguing experimental performance sound going on here. Reissued on two CDs or four LPs, from Svart.

Roland Kirk
Third Dimension

Recorded in New York in 1956, Third Dimension is the debut album from the legendary jazz man Roland Kirk. Slamming together bits and pieces of jazz history, he crafted his own unique multi-instrument style, showcased in all its glory here. Originally titled Triple Threat. Out on vinyl LP from Bethlehem.

Weezer
Pinkerton

'Pinkerton' is a weird one. Released two years after the massively successful 'Blue Album', Weezer undertook a darker, more abrasive sound with abstract and bittersweet lyrics. The band, their label and the press were largely unfavourable of the album, but it has since benefited from a critical reappraisal including perfect scores in Pitchfork and Rolling Stone. It became hugely successful with fans of emo and alternative rock music, with acts as far afield as Mitski and Joyce Manor stating its a huge influence on their sound. An essential classic of heavy and honest power pop.

Disco Inferno
D. I. Go Pop

Ah right then, you are asking me to write an impartial product description on this album? Not going to happen. What we have is one of the most forward thinking records of the '90s. A place where Joy Division, Public Enemy, MBV and Young Gods collide to create a barrage of fury and ambience and song craft and sample-delia that no-one has yet got near.

Stereophonics
Performance and Cocktails

Performance and Cocktails was the second album by Welsh indie-rockers Stereophonics. They really hit the big time with this one: in 1999 Britpop was pretty much forgotten but Stereophonics were getting stronger. Contains the hits Just Looking, Pick A Part That’s New and The Bartender And The Thief.

Rico & The Rudies
Blow Your Horn

Unavailable on any format since its original 1969 release, Rico & The Rudies' Blow Your Horn is back on Trojan and in full, flaming colour (who doesn’t love orange vinyl?). This is a stellar record, Rico Rodriguez’s soulful West Indian trombone jiving playfully with The Rudies’ London-spiked roots reggae. Rare and very, very cool.

Ken Boothe
Everything I Own

Described by some as the most iconic Jamaican soul singer of his generation, Ken Boothe’s Everything I Own is back on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1974. The record is a must have for reggae fans and soul fans alike. The release features the original analogue mastering and album art for true authenticity. Available on vinyl LP.

Sonic Youth
Rather Ripped

And yea, verily, ‘twas a rather ripped time in the kingdom. ‘Rather Ripped’ is regarded by many as Sonic Youth's late-period masterpiece. First released in 2006, this was the group’s first record without Jim O'Rourke since he’d joined the band in the late-90s. Shrinking to a four-piece allowed Sonic Youth to refocus their sound, and the result is an album of taut, grungey alternativa that can stand up to the likes of ‘Daydream Nation’, ‘Goo’ and ‘Dirty’.

Hiroshi & Claudia
Six To Six

A rare and strange treat here from the obscure depths of Australia’s privately-pressed LP archives. Hiroshi & Claudia’s Six To Six is what happened when a touring group of Japanese jazz musicians had a session with a Mauritian cabaret singer, in which all parties took things to wild, funky, disco-jazz territory, Extremely rare 1979 record, now reissued by Northside Records.

Patrick Cowley
Afternooners

Sex! Now that I have your attention: porn! Wait. Patrick Cowley is the electronic artist responsible for a series of cult gay porn soundtracks; Afternooners is the final volume to be released in an archival series of these works. Associated with creating his own dance sound based on trying to transpose other genres for synth, his music retains a unique sound faraway from the typical cry of vintage. This one's arguably the most experimental in its series.

Lee "Scratch" Perry
Black Ark Classic Songs

To mark the Upsetter’s 80th birthday, an album of dub reworkings by the Mad Professor. The wide-ranging selections include Super Ape standout Zion Blood, Keep on Moving from The Wailers’ Soul Revolution, even harking back to the ska era with Doctor Shit (née Dick). The new CD edition includes adds four tracks not on the LP version.

Richard Band
From Beyond (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

The 1986 film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s chilling tale From Beyond contains a suitably tense soundtrack by Richard Band, scored for both classical instruments and synthesizers. The suite has been both remastered and expanded, and is pressed to ‘Pink Slime’ vinyl. Presented within a newly-designed sleeve and alongside new liner notes. On Waxwork.

Nina Simone
Mood Indigo (The Complete Bethlehem Singles)

Undisputed legend of piano and performance Nina Simone gets yet more of the dues she deserves with this collection of her early recordings, many of which will be familiar even to the unfamiliar -- "My Baby Just Cares For Me" features, as does the monolithic mash of melody and solo "Love Me Or Leave Me". The LP version comes with a 7" replica of her very first single, "Porgy", which is exceedingly nifty.

Easy
Magic Seed

This record was claimed by NME to be a record that would break the British snobbery towards European acts who play 90's rock music. Whether or not it did is entirely a personal opinion. Magic Seed by Easy has been remastered on A Turntable Friend and both the vinyl and CD are housed in gatefold packaging.

Kaleidoscope
Kaleidoscope

A much required vinyl pressing for what the press release calls 'one of the great psychedelic rock albums of all time'. Kaleidoscope emerged out of the West Coast of America in the late '60s with a drenched reverby sound that must have had influence on the Doors and later era line ups of Love never mind the Brian Jonestown Massacre. This vinyl re-press comes with bonus photos and the story of the band.

Big old noisy team-up from 1984, bringing together the great and mysterious Coil with avant-smashers The New Blockaders and Vortex Campaign. Roxy Music
Roxy Music

Roxy Music’s game-changing eponymous debut from 1972 has been given some fancy reissue treatment. A 3 CD and DVD set featuring tons of outtakes, demos, rare stuff, a 136 page booklet and 5.1 mix by Steven Wilson is the version people want to get their hands on. It has been put together with input from members of the band. It is also being issued as 180g vinyl LP and Deluxe 2-CD with 24 page booklet. This is a must for fans of the band.

Muddy Waters
The Best Of Muddy Waters

The Best Of Muddy Waters is reissued on vinyl for the first time in 30 years to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the blues legend’s first album release. It’s made up from the 78rpm recordings Waters made for Chess Records between 1948 and 1954. The recordings show Waters as a highly expressive performer making this a great place to start if you want to explore one of music’s most influential artists.

Thelonious Monk Quartet & John Coltrane
At Carnegie Hall

At Carnegie Hall shows the burgeoning talents of John Coltrane coming to the fore during his time with Thelonious Monk Quartet. Monk’s experience shows he’s got a real player in Coltrane whose solo playing displays an early version of his ‘Sheets of Sound’ improvisation style. Unearthed by accident at the Library of Congress, this is a treat for jazz fans. Double vinyl LP on Blue Note.

The Killers
Day & Age

Here are the Killers, surfin’ on reissue waves with 180-gram vinyl iterations of selected albums. First unleashed in 2008, this is the band’s fourth album Day & Age. By this point, they’ve really nailed the radio-friendly, overproduced alt-rock sound. Unlike the yelling on e.g. Hot Fuss, Brandon Flowers’ voice is also much more controlled and elegant.

Yasuaki Shimizu
Music For Commercials

From 1987, Yasuaki Shimizu's Music For Commercials is still a very popular title in the 'Made to Measure' series. Composer-saxophonist Shimizu -- known for his soundtrack work and collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Van Dyke Parks, Bjork etc -- made an unusual album of short bits for Japanese TV ads (Seiko, Sharp, Honda). 23 tracks, each around 2 minutes long. Sounds are collaged, machines whirr. Artists such as OPN are well into it. CD / remastered vinyl with colour inner sleeve and free download. On Crammed Discs.

The Fall
The Fontana Years

Woaah there. A 6CD box set emanating from the type Mark E Smith and his merry troupe were signed to Fontana. This includes classic albums Extricate, Shiftwork and Code: Selfish plus all the singles, B sides  and John Peel Sessions from the era which was one of the most creative and vital periods of their long history.

Johnny Osbourne
Love You Tonight

A pair of highly sought-after Prince Jammy / Channel One productions, finally available together on a single 12” alongside their dub versions. Love You Tonight is upbeat and dissonant, with an oddly wiry, almost post-punk rhythm guitar line. Purify Your Heart is a more laidback rhythm with righteously preachy lyrics. Osbourne is smoothly commanding in both modes. Comes in a Greensleeves branded sleeve.

Mansun
One EP

So, you’ve rocked out to Paul Draper’s first solo album, Spooky Action from August this year. Perhaps before that, his two 2016 EPs were your jam. Now you’re wondering: who is this man? Where did he come from? Could he have been in any other bands during the 1990s? Well don’t fear: Kscope Records knew you were coming!

Lords Of The Underground
Here Come The Lords

Lords of the Underground’s 1993 debut gets a 25th anniversary reissue with Music On Vinyl (in this case, music on green vinyl). Unmistakable golden-age early 1990s hip-hop with a lingering trace of swinging 80s electro, ol’ LOTUG hold their own brilliantly both as witty MCs and as groovemakers.

Etant Donnés with Michael Gira
Offenbarung und Untergang

Reissue of a 1999 collaboration between the French post-industrial experimentalists and Swans’ frontman. The album sets Gira’s spoken and sung recital of a text by Austrian poet Georg Trakl amid profoundly bleak atmospheres. Mark Cunningham of No Wave greats Mars contributes trumpet. For best results, have a good grasp of the German tongue, though the emotional impact comes across either way.

I Marc 4
Nelson Psychout

Second release as part of Vampisoul's Psychout series. Nelson Psychout explores lost gems by Italian session band I Marc 4, from the Nelson Records library. Though these tracks were created to be background tracks, there's a eccentricity to them that shines when they become the star of the show.

Camera Obscura
Keep It Clean

Elefant Records celebrate their twenty-fifth birthday with some welcome reissues. Keep it Clean is a single from Camera Obscura’s 2004 album Underachievers Try Harder, and it’s a perfectly representative slice of sweet sweet indie pop from the Scottish gang. Pressed to vinyl for the first time, and on clear vinyl too! Edition of 1000.

Dennis Brown
Words Of Wisdom

Reissue of the late Dennis Brown’s 1979 LP Words Of Wisdom. The reggae legend is on top form on this righteous, impassioned collection of roots. Cuts like ‘So Jay Say’ and ‘Don’t Feel No Way’ could chant down Babylon all by themselves. The record also shows Brown’s sensitive side - the soulful ‘Money In My Pocket’ went on to become his signature song.

Cowboy Junkies
The Trinity Session

Cowboy Junkies famously recorded The Trinity Session in just one night with just one microphone in 1987, and yet thirty years later we are still listening to this beautiful suite of Americana / country music. This reissue of The Trinity Session adds two tracks that didn’t feature on the original release, as well as remastered audio and some nice new liner notes. Edition of 1000 transparent red vinyl LPs.

Agoraphobic Nosebleed
Altered States of America

Agoraphobic Nosebleed are a premium grindcore band, no mistake about it. Their 2003 third album Altered States Of America is just over 20 minutes long, but contains a glorious 100 tracks! Lovely stuff. Initially released only as a 3” CD, this Relapse reissue puts these short sharp tracks on (baby pink coloured) vinyl for the first time..

German Oak
Down In The Bunker

Reissue of a notoriously misunderstood and misrepresented album and band. German Oak’s Down In The Bunker was literally recording in a bunker, and is a looming, dark, psychedelic prog/kraut rock album which got matched up to WWII imagery and references without the band’s input. Presented for the first time on vinyl with their consent the package includes extra previously unreleased tracks and images.

Fela Kuti
Shakara

Nigerian afrobeat king Fela Kuti is known for having a huge catalogue, but over the years many of his albums have been nigh-on forgotten. The Knitting Factory label are working to change that now, individually reissuing a selection of albums for the first time on vinyl. Shakara contains the Fela favourite ‘Lady’, along with a much rarer cut.

Fela Kuti
Fear Not For Man

Fela Kuti needs no introduction, but his 1978 LP Fear Not For Man might. This isn’t one of the Afrobeat legend’s better-known works, but that’s not to say that it doesn’t play an important part in the Fela story. Indeed, the fact that this was one of the first records he released in the aftermath of a vicious government attack on his Lagos compound makes for an intriguing backstory. As for the music, Fear Not For Man’s title track is classic Kuti, all rhythm and invective, while instrumental B-side ‘Palm Wine Sound’ nods to Fela’s early adventures in high-life. Lester Bowie is among the cast.

The Times
Go! With The Times

The Times were a post-punk/indie band from London. They were led by Ed Ball who had a stint in Television Personalities with school friend Dan Treacy before forming Teenage Filmstars, a band that eventually morphed into The Times. Go! With The Times was the album that they recorded first but didn’t release until 1985 as their 5th album. Ball seemingly picking up a recording and releasing trick from his beloved Beatles. Classic stuff.

D.A.F.
Für Immer

The fifth and final album from the duo of Gabi Delgado-López and Robert Görl came out in 1982. Content ranges from the jaunty pop of Geheimnis to more stern stuff like Die Lippe and Die Götter Sind Weiss. It’s a bit more varied than previous work, but as ever finds a nice balance between punishing and fun. Reissued on LP and CD.

Nucleus with Leon Thomas
Live 1970

British jazz-rock pioneers Nucleus were led by trumpeter Ian Carr and remained active throughout the seventies. Thomas is of course best known for being the yodeling voice of The Creator Has a Master Plan, which took up the bulk of Pharoah Sanders’ 1969 LP Karma, and is the centrepiece of the tenor giant’s live sets to this day. The version that opens this 1970 Montreux jazz festival set is very different, not least due to Chris Spedding’s extended guitar techniques, which lends the fine ensemble an almost post-punk angularity at times. Gatefold double LP or CD in LP-replica sleeve.

Illa J
Yancey Boys

Yancey Boys is an album wherein J Dilla’s brother Illa J flows over the top of some of the many Dilla beats left behind by the great man. Though this 2008 album was a posthumous collaboration, the fraternal connection is strong with this one, and it really feels like it could have been made face to face. Reissued on CD and vinyl by Delicious Vinyl.

Big Business
Head For The Shallow

Reissue of the Seattle duo’s debut, originally on Hydra Head in 2004. The pair hit on a simple but immediately agreeable formula - bombastically heavy and fiercely rockin’ songs brought to life by the powerful but nuanced drumming of Coady Willis and Jared Warren’s fuzzed-up bass and full-throated but tuneful vocals. It’s easy to see why Melvins took them on wholesale for a while. Viscerally satisfying stuff. Limited LP.

Brasil

A snapshot of a time and place of relative obscurity before globalised communication brought geographically disparate musical worlds together. 20 years after it was recorded, 'Brasil' is back on a repress, an essential document featuring a host of incredible musicians eking out the sound of a most vibrant nation.

Can
Ege Bamyasi

'Ege Bamyasi' sees Can at their funkiest, grooviest, and most accessible. The fourth album from the krautrockers blends avant-funk with hypnotic psychedelic rock, prog complexity and smatterings of early electronic. Stephen Malkmus has covered it in full, Kanye West has plundered some samples from it, and Can even scored a Top Ten hit when 'Spoon' was used as a theme song in a German detective show. All we know is this is an essential album of outsider rock with a rather tasty looking cover.

Dead Can Dance
Aion

Anglo/Australian duo Dead Can Dance make one of the most unique sounds in pop. Lisa Gerrard's vocals swoop over Brendan Perry's worldly multi-instrumentalism in a way few if any have matched. Aion was their fifth album (initially released in 1990) and sees to duo make a more concise and focussed job of presenting their sprawling vision.
