Belle and Sebastian

As part of the massive Belle and Sebastian re-issue campaign, this is one of the lesser known releases in their back catalogue. A selection of songs they recorded for the Todd Solondz film of the same name. Not all of them made the final cut for the film but here they are as God (Stuart Murdoch) intended.

Hugh Masekela
The Chisa Years: 1965-1975 (Rare and Unreleased)

A compilation to satisfy anyone whose curiosity in Hugh Masekela was peaked by his passing in January of this year. This LP collates early work by the South African jazz legend, including some of his groundbreaking stuff with The Zulus and Letta Mbulu. The likes of Ojah collaboration ‘Afro Beat Blues’ are mighty and righteous funk jams. This repressing by BBE marks the first time in a decade that this compilation has been available on wax.

Leroy Hutson
Closer To The Source

Closer To The Source by soul singer, songwriter, producer and arranger Leroy Hutson was originally released in 1978. Earlier in his career he replaced Curtis Mayfield in The Impressions and you can see why - Hutson’s music comes from a similar place, although this is waaaaay smoother, as the cover may lead you to believe. LP with detailed sleeve notes by Tony Rounce and CD with 3 bonus tracks on Acid Jazz.

Leroy Hutson
The Man!

The Man! Was Leroy Hutson’s second album, originally released in 1974, following a spell as Curtis Mayfield’s replacement in soul group The Impressions. This album is notable for containing the track The Ghetto ‘74 which he co-wrote with Donny Hathaway who recorded the song four years previously. LP with extensive sleeve notes by Tony Rounce and CD with bonus track on Acid Jazz.

Steve Roach
Dreamtime Return

Steve Roach’s 1988 ethno-ambient release Dreamtime Return hits the thirty-year mark and gets the anniversary remaster treatment. Combining appropriated references to Aboriginal Australian folklore and spirituality with his own creativity with electronic instruments, the album is a canonical masterpiece of New Age cheese.

Egyptian Lover
Egypt, Egypt

Egyptian Lover is an underrated 1980’s electro producer, whose work is being authoritatively compiled by Stones Throw next year. To set the scene for that, the label is releasing signature tune Egypt, Egypt (backed with ‘Girls’) on nothing less than white triangular (‘pyramid’) vinyl. What a stylish record!

Arturo Ruiz del Pozo
Composiciones Nativas - Music for Native Peruvian instruments and Magnetophonic Tape 1978

First Published on cassette in 1984, ‘Composiciones Nativas’ was a summarisation of five compositions ‘Estudio para quena’, ‘Lago de totoras’, ‘Despegue’, ‘Noche Ashaninka’, and ‘Selvinas’. This CD reissue is part of a recovery project called Sounds Essential Collection with the aim of periodically publishing fundamental works of Peruvian avant garde music. The compositions convey a state of meditative consciousness that is relaxing and peaceful.

Jan Jelinek & Computer Soup
Improvisations and Edits, Tokyo 26.09.2001

On the 26th September 2001 four men, Jan Jelinek and Computer Soup, sat on the floor of a Tokyo living room and improvised for three hours. They used a trumpet, and various toys and electronics. The group then edited separately, resulting in this, a weird and unique exploration of creativity.

Harry Partch
The World Of Harry Partch

Originally released in 1969 as part of Columbia’s Masterworks series, this album contains three pieces by one of the most idiosyncratic composers of the 20th century. Partch’s percussive, microtonal compositions, utilising outlandish custom-built instruments, display the influence of gamelan and Noh theatre. However this is very much American music, and the recitations of Barstow movingly captures the hobo lifestyle Partch sometimes experienced. The impact of this work is apparent in records by The Residents and Tom Waits, but still sounds unique and delightfully strange today.

Pain Of Mind

The lords of crust Neurosis return with another reissue from the river-mark. Who here remembers Pain of Mind, a classic of the East Bay scene? It strayed deep out of reality and delved into a thrashy cosmological void where all that could be accessed was growls, screams and groaning musical onslaught, the kind of piercing, unfussy sound the band started their existence on.

Tubby Hayes Quartet
The Syndicate: Live At The Hopbine 1968 Vol. 1

Repress and first ever CD release of this 1986 Tubby Hayes Quartet performance. Disappointingly Tubby is not a tuba or a tuba player, but a sax player. This is very, very fast jazz, with the star of the show being Hayes's remarkable drummer who manages to maintain a precision and delicacy for its entire length.

Jean Dubuffet
Expériences Musicales De Jean Dubuffet

Reissue of Jean Dubuffet's legendary Expériences Musicales. The original can cost upwards of €5000 so at £15.49 this is an absolute steal! Dubuffet founded Art Brut (not the band), a movement which he saw as raw emotional expression. His music is definitely raw, noisy and cacophonous. A fascinating artefact of 1960s avant-garde music.

King Tubby meets Roots Radics
Dangerous Dub

Another excellent outing from King Tubby, this time working with Roots Radicals. Dangerous Dub gets nice and deep, echoes and reverb sending the instrumentals to some wild places. You know you can count on Tubby. First released in 1981, these ten tracks are reissued on vinyl by the Greensleeves label.

Chris Brann
Deep Fall

A seminal '90s deep house record gets reissued here by its original home of Peacefrog (Moodymann, Little Dragon). By 1997 Chris Brann had already received acclaim for his work as one third of Wamdue Kids, but Deep Fall sees the producer finding his own way and his own sound. The nine tracks here are the deepest of the deep, with mellow synth pads and sultry vocals keeping watch over rigid, slightly tech-house-flavoured drum tracking.
  • Vinyl Double LP (PF071)
  • £22.99 £13.79 (saving: £9.20)

Peacefrog Records (Moodymann, Suburban Knights) reissue their 1996 LP by Stasis. Fromtheoldtothenew is classic Peacefrog fare, synthesising multiple strains of electronica into a groovy, faintly psychedelic end-product. The likes of ‘Skins’ and ‘Utopia Planetia’ are heady house jams in the vein of Future Sound Of London and B12. Elsewhere entries like ‘Moody Ol’ Teacher’ have see Stasis on a jazztronica/breaks flex that's certainly had an influence on the sound of Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Records.

Neil Young
Roxy – Tonight’s the Night Live

Roxy - Tonight’s The Night Live was recorded on the opening night of the famous club on L.A.’s Sunset Strip in September 1973. Neil Young, with his backing band, The Santa Monica Flyers - Ben Keith, Nils Lofgren, Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina took to the stage to play a set of new material that would eventually make up the 1975 album Tonight’s The Night. Neil Young was reeling from the drug-related deaths of two friends, musician Danny Whitten and roadie, Bruce Berry, consequently there’s a cathartic energy to the live recording.

Linval presents
Dub Landing Vol. 1

Greensleeves are reissuing Linval Thompson presents Dub Landing Vol. 1 -- the only authorised reissue of this classic dub album in fact -- originally put out by Starlight Records in 1981. It's now presented with a second disc of original vocal versions, including previously unreleased tracks from Junior Reid at Channel One, mixed by Scientist. Double vinyl LP includes a large fold-out colour poster of the cover art: check it out, futuristic or what.

Linval presents
Dub Landing Vol. 2

The evergreen Greensleeves repackage this essential 1981 LP from Linval Thompson. While the original dubs retain all the experimental energy of Jamaica’s 70s and 80s dub explosion, the real treats here are bonus vocal versions mixed by Scientist and Prince Jammy. The likes of Barrington Levy, Freddie McKay and Papa Tullo come through with verses.

Venite Visum is a compilation of recordings made by East German instrument inventor Andreas Grosser between 1976 and 1980. Also features the previously unreleased track 'The Quantum Jump'.

Howlin Rain
Howlin Rain

Howlin’ Rain are the kind of band that Uncut magazine love. Their music draws its influences from classic ‘60s and ‘70s rock such as The Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Allman Brothers, Blue Cheer and Bob Dylan, along with the writing of Richard Brautigan. Their debut, self-titled album was originally released in 2006. Although the band’s sound is synonymous with crackly vinyl, this is the first time it has been released in said format. LP on Silver Current Records.

Holly Golightly
Singles Round-Up

Holly Golightly was a member of Thee Headcoatees. They were put together by Kent garage rock legend Billy Childish as his backing band before they decided to go it alone. Whilst Thee Headcoatees blended girl group-style pop with rudimentary garage rock, Holly Golightly’s solo career has seen her basing her sound on blues, folk rock and a gentler strain of rock ‘n’ roll. Singles Round-Up compiles the A and B sides of her first twelve singles, mixing covers, perhaps most interestingly her version of Pavement’s Box Elder, and self-penned tracks. Double LP and CD on Damaged Goods.

Boy Harsher
Yr Body Is Nothing

Since the drop of their 2014 debut Lesser Man, Massachusetts duo Boy Harsher have gained enough traction to become one of the bigger synthwave acts of the decade. After all previous pressings on DKA sold out in weeks, their 2016 LP Yr Body Is Nothing now gets the reissue treatment via Nude Club. Anyone who’s freaked out to their massive ‘Pain’ will find plenty more to enjoy on this broody yet danceable record.

Boy Harsher
Lesser Man (Extended Version)

Previously issued on wax by aufnahme + wiedergabe and as a cassette by both Soft Science and Night People, the latest iteration of Boy Harsher’s Lesser Man is out via their solo imprint Nude Club. There’s been quite a clamour around this record - ‘Pain’ has racked up almost two million YouTube hits at the time of writing - and it’s easy to see why it’s proved so popular. As well as darkwave/synthwave masterclasses like ‘Run’ and ‘Modulations’, there are also droning horrorscapes (‘Crimea’) and plenty of poppier moments. This version includes a remix by The Soft Moon.

Die Kleinen Und Die Bösen

The 1980 sophomore LP from the Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft gets the reissue treatment from Groenland (Neu!, William Fitzsimmons). The A-side, produced by Conny Plank, finds the common ground between Suicide, Einstuerzende Neubauten and the Pet Shop Boys, while the B-side showcases the fury of the band’s live show. Any record that can count itself as a favourite of Simon Reynolds is going to be worth your time.

Frank Zappa
Sheik Yerbouti

Reissues afoot of two Frank Zappa albums on Universal. Sheik Yerbouti is mostly a live album, though Zappa added in some studio wizardry to round things out. Features all the typical Zappa-isms, with lots of highly technical guitar and rhythm lines and a bit of ‘wackiness’. Double LP reissue.

Squadro Antigangsters

Yet another reissue of the Roman hucksters Goblin here (they who did the soundtrack for the original Dawn Of The Dead film). This one is of some music  they came up with for a 1979 flick entitled Squadra Antigangsters - which, if the press release is to be believed, is kind of like an Italian version of The Naked Gun. The score is a predictably wacky affair, with several American musical styles - Country & Western, rockabilly - screwballed through a foreign lens.

Meridian Brothers
El Advenimiento del Castillo Mujer

The 2006 debut album of Meridian Brothers. Sounds of Bogotan musical traditions (e.g. cumbia, currulao) are slightly tweaked, abstracted and adjusted, becoming what key member Eblis Alvarez calls ‘Abstract Folk Music’. Initially a CD-only release, El Advenimiento del Castillo Mujer is now reissued on LP! From Discrepant.

New Order
Waiting For The Sirens Call

The 'No' on the sleeve should possibly be a warning to you if you were thinking of delving into the later works of New Order. The once innovative and always fascinating band lost their way somehow as they split and reformed and split again. 2005's Waiting For the Sirens Call was another attempt to regain the formula and was a more rocky work than they'd produced for some time. At least Peter Hook played on it which is more than can be said for the subsequent Music Complete.

John Coltrane & Don Cherry
The Avant-Garde (Mono)

Re-release of one of John Coltrane’s more disputed works, this album from him and Don Cherry has the pair playing Ornette Coleman tracks with some of the Ornette Coleman Quartet. One of the few Coltrane recordings sans piano which gives the saxophonist room to manoeuver. One for the die-hard fans.

Dr. John
In The Right Place

I once literally bumped into Dr. John in a corridor at Manchester University. He won't remember. This is a reissue of this 1973 album which turned out to be the biggest selling of his career. Cut from the original analogue masters, you'll hear Top 20 hits like 'Right Place, Wrong Time' sounding the way they are supposed to.

The Notorious B.I.G
Life After Death

Rhino are commemorating the 20th anniversary of the release of Notorious B.I.G.’s Life After Death with a triple LP reissue. Originally released less than two weeks after his murder the album lived up to it’s title and brought some of the most well known tracks in hip hop, dealing with violent streets and gangsters and introducing a more popular accessible approach to the artform.

Crack The Skye

Ah, my personal favourite metal album of all time. If you could label any album as 'psychedelic metal', it would be 'Crack The Skye'. It mixes the classic prog technicality of your King Crimson's with the grandiose scope of Pink Floyd's 'Animals' but it's brought back down to the aether with crushing stoner sludge riffs ala Neurosis and Melvins. It's an incredible work which sums up everything Mastodon do so well.

The Hunter

‘The Hunter’ is US stoner rock band Mastodon's first non concept album since ‘Remission’ (2002). It contains no elements of classical music and is pure, heavy rock. The album includes a song composed and sung entirely by drummer Brann Dailor who also features on vocals on several other tracks.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse

Released in the same year as Tonight’s The Night, Zuma was more of a straightforward (but still a classic) Neil Young & Crazy Horse album. It features the live favourite Cortez The Killer and Don’t Cry No Tears which has been covered by Teenage Fanclub. There’s also an appearance from his old pals Crosby, Stills and Nash.
