Derek Bailey, Tristan Honsinger
Duo

Another of Bailey’s early Incus records reissued by Honest Jons, this time a 1976 set pairing the guitarist with American cellist Tristan Honsinger. Bailey’s collaborative appearances were always quite a different prospect than his solo work. The musicians are heard playing in both near-psychic sympathy and mischievous antipathy, with Honsinger resorting to occasional outbursts of glossolalia. Despite a voluminous discography, Bailey didn’t see much value in recording of free improvisation, but this is an exciting edge-of-the-seat listen 42 years on.

Paul Johnson
Feel The Music

Chicago’s Paul Johnson spent most of the ‘90s thriving in the underground dance scene dropping 12s on Cajual, Relief and Dance Mania. He signed for Peacefrog and released his ‘95 debut album, Bump Talkin’. The Following year he unleashed his house masterpiece, Feel The Music which gets a welcome repress. 1999 saw a breakthrough hit, Get Down, which still graces dancefloors to this day, whilst remixes for Stacy Kidd, Joey Beltram, Green Velvet, Armando, CC Penniston, Ron Trent, K-Alexi, and Steve Poindexter, to name a few, are still dropped in clubs by the biggest and best. 2LP on Peacefrog.

The Beginning Of The End
Funky Nassau

Though the career of 70s band Beginning Of The End ended up being relatively short (they disbanded after their second album), things seemed rosy on the release of their 1971 debut LP Funky Nassau. The eponymous track was a huge hit, selling over a million copies and topping the Billboard R ‘n’ B chart. That song’s ebullient mix of American funk sounds, hi-life guitar and the polyrhythmic grooves of their native Bahamas are carried on through the full-length. Not a million miles away from The Funkees. The CD edition contains both this record and their self-titled follow-up.

Beginning Of The End
Beginning Of The End

Strut reissue the second album from Bahamian group Beginning Of The End here. Though they only made two LPs before splitting, the band nailed down a blend of strutting Philly soul, meaty funk and a disco sound lent extra groove by the polyrhythmic percussion style native to the band’s Caribbean home. The group’s vocalist has a nice throaty yelp reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix.

John Foxx
Metamatic (Deluxe)

John Foxx left Ultravox to be replaced as singer by Midge Ure. Metamatic, originally released in 1980, was his first solo effort. Whilst sticking with electronic music, Foxx eschwed the soft synth convention of Ultravox to create a harder-edged, less commercial sound. This 3-CD reissue comes in a clamshell case with 6 art cards and a 40 page booklet. For the uninitiated, fans of Gary Numan et al should check this out.

Professor Rhythm
Professor 3

Reissue of classic Professor Rhythm album first released in 1991. This album was released around the time hip-hop and house were starting to have an influence in South Africa, while still retaining much of the mbaqanga and bubblegum sounds that had been popular before. Released by the uh.. Awesome Tapes from Africa.

Volume 3 features tracks from The Supremes, Bobby Bland and The Rimshots, plus plenty more.

Suzanne Ciani
Help, Help, The Globolinks!

Oooh! Never-before-released music from Suzanne Ciani, written in 1980 for Gian Carlo Menotti’s children’s opera Help, Help, The Globolinks!. Radiohead
OK Computer - OKNOTOK 1997-2017

If you happen to be a fan of this album then here’s something you might want to get your mitts on. The whole album remastered plus the B sides from the singles of the time plus the holy grail for Radiohead fans,  three unreleased and long sought after tracks dug out of the vaults. All formats have all the bonus stuff on so if you miss out on the opaque blue vinyl you are still ok (computer).

African Scream Contest 2

When the first of Analog Africa’s African Scream Contest compilations dropped in 2008, it shone a light on the sound of Benin, a nation whose music doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. Fast-forward a decade and the second instalment in the series is about to do that all over again. Compiled by crate-digger Samy Ben Rejeb, the compilation consists of tracks cut in the two decades after Benin achieved independence in 1960. While bearing the influence of the highlife, Lagos funk and Afrobeat explosions taking place across the border in Nigeria, there are plenty of outliers here - the slippery jazz-funk of ‘Asaw Fofor’ by Ignace De Souza & The Melody Aces and the poly-workout by Lokonon Andre et Les Volcans, to name but two. Fantastic artwork as well.

Jeremy Enigk
The Return Of The Frog Queen

Really really great album. This was Jeremy Enigk's first solo album away from Sunny Day Real Estate and it's a totally different kettle of kippers. This is wonderful baroque orchestral-pop with strings and all sorts putting me in mind of Cardinal and Richard Davies. This re-issue comes with the remastered original album plus bonus digital stuff.

Technicolour Paradise: Rhum Rhapsodies & Others Exotic Delights

Numero, everyone's favourite musical archaeologists are back with Technicolour Paradise, a compilation that gives us a close look at the sheer weirdness of music meant to evoke paradise by and for people who likely couldn't make it there. If you ever wanted to know what a mid-20th century American thought other Americans wanted the rest of the world to sound like, now's your chance.

The Just Measurers
Flagellation

There was only ever 300 copies of Flagellation, the one and only LP by The Just Measurers, pressed back in 1983, so it’s no wonder that this really weird DIY punk record has recently been changing hands for the best part of 500 notes. Emotional Response saw fit to reissue the LP, so now you can grab a copy without breaking the bank...and you should, too.

The Perth County Conspiracy
The Perth County Conspiracy

The Perth County Conspiracy were a psychedelic folk group from the 1970s whose records now fetch big bucks. If you don’t have big bucks, then the people at Flashback have conveniently reissued their eponymous 1970 LP at an affordable price. Despite coming only a few weeks after their Columbia debut, the band agreed to do this album exclusively for Canadian Radio. They penned original material as well as arranging covers of Bob Dylan, Donovan and Smokey Robinson for the broadcast. It’s all wrapped up in a neat little package for this release.

Surgeon
Basictonalvocabulary

Tresor are going about reissuing a few classic LPs from hard techno master Surgeon. 1997’s Basictonalvocabulary is the sophomore album from the Birmingham DJ/producer and also the first full-length he cut for the Berlin label. With its relentless drum programming, booming bass and busy lead lines Basictonalvocabulary would help define the sound of both Surgeon and Tresor for years to come. An essential cop.

Julie Doiron
Désormais / Heart and Crime

Exciting reissue klaxon! This double re-release of Julie Doiron's stunning 2001 album ‘Désormais’ and 2002's 'Heart And Crime', previously out of print on vinyl, is testament to the Canadian's disarmingly warm songwriting. Weaving together gentle fingerpicking, ethereal vocals and twinkling piano, this record showcases Doiron's wistful nature and innate lyricism.

Rafael Toral
Wave Field

Rafael Toral’s classic ambient record Wave Field gets a reissue courtesy of Drag City. Originally released in 1995 via a bunch of labels (Jim O’Rourke’s dexter’s cigar handled it in the U.S.), Wave Field must have been a breath of fresh air when compared to all the six-string angst around at the time. These lovely, serene guitar-scapes are reminiscent of Fripp, Eno and Cage.

Rafael Toral
Sound Mind Sound Body

Early work from Portuguese sound-worker Rafael Toral. Sound Mind Sound Body is composed almost entirely out of guitar sounds, though the processes Toral has used in the devising and processing of the work have smoothed out the instrument almost completely, into a rich, ever-stretching plane of ambient drone. This is a reissue of the 1999 edition of this album.

Scream
NMC17

Scream’s seminal 1988 LP No More Censorship gets the reissue treatment courtesy of Southern Lord (Earth, Goatsnake). The group’s first album to feature Dave Grohl - on drums, fortunately - NMC17 is as vital a snapshot into the 1980s DC hardcore scene as Bad Brains’s I Against I or Fugazi’s 13 Songs. This new version saw the original mixes run through the desk at Grohl’s studio and comes with some nice photos of the band in their pomp.

Klaus Schulze
La Vie Electronique Volume 1.1

Klaus Schulze - he of Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel and … Klaus Schulze fame - has set to work putting his affairs in order in the past decade. La Vie Electronique Volume 1.1 is in fact the second volume in the LVE series, a run that brings together Schulze’s rarities in chronological order. Focussing on the fruitful period between 1970 and 1972, these studies, ditties and exercises prefigure so many of the great genre upheavals of the subsequent decade, particularly the advents of ambient, electroacoustic and New Age musics. This release is the first time that these tracks have made it to vinyl.

Ornette Coleman
The Atlantic Years

Ornette Coleman completists need look no further than this luxury box set. Atlantic have remastered the ten records he made for the label between 1959 and 1962 - that means The Shape Of Jazz To Come, Free Jazz, This Is Our Music and more. They’ve packaged them alongside a book of photos and an essay on Coleman by famed jazz critic Ben Ratliff.

Trad, Gras och Stenar
Mors Mors

Mors Mors is part of Anthology Recordings major Trad, Gras och Stenar reissue series and was released originally in 1972, at the the Swedish prog group’s most ferocious. The label have done justice to this obscure counterculture group with new material and a beautiful double vinyl LP. Now you can experience the psychedelic jams properly.

Freddie Gibbs & Statik Selektah
Lord Giveth, Lord Taketh Away

Before Piñata there was Lord Giveth, Lord Taketh Away. In 2011 Freddie Gibbs got together with Statik Selektah and they live-streamed themselves recording an entire album in a day. Gibbs' iconic flow on top of Static's boom bap production makes for a combination more than deserving of the Omerta 'first time on vinyl' treatment.

Fra Lippo Lippi
Golden Slumbers: The Very Best Of

The Norwegian synthpop band went from post-punk / goth origins to a more sophisticated style that saw them produced by Walter Becker and scoring worldwide hits with the likes of Shouldn’t Have To Be Like That. Former member Rune Kristoffersen founded the revered label Rune Grammofon, on which this, their first compilation to appear on vinyl, is released.

Kitsos Harisiadis
Lament In A Deep Style 1929 - 1931

Jack White has been tunnelling in the archives again… this time he’s come out with some amazing deep rarities from Greek folk musician and clarinetist Kitsos Harisiadis, all recorded in the period 1929 to 1931. Lament In A Deep Style feels like sacred devotional music, such is the power of Kitsos’s remarkable clarinet runs. CD and LP release on Third Man.

Disques Debs International Volume 1

Disques Debs is a Guadeloupean label that has run from the 1950’s to the present day: this new Strut compilation, volume one in a proposed series, focuses its attentions on the period 1960 to 1972 and is brimming over with beautiful Carribean big bands, bolero and biguine; and that's just for starters. High grade archival compilation on CD and LP, presented alongside excellent liner notes and photography.

Pink Floyd
Pulse

Weighty quadruple vinyl reissue of Floyd’s 1995 live set. You don’t get the blinking LED that graced the original CD, but that aspect of the release might prove to be less mind-bending 23 years on. You do get two and a half hours of competent, Waters-free renditions of the classics (including the entirety of Dark Side), and later non-classics.

Noah And The Whale
The First Days of Spring

Now this is an LP that knows how to drag you through a break-up. Charlie Fink’s pained and delicate vocals combined with warbling violins make you want to check right back into heartbreak hotel. I guess the record's producer Emery Dobyns (Patti Smith, Antony & The Johnsons) knows the language of nostalgia pretty well. A decade after it was first released in 2009, and three years since the group disbanded, it’s stood the test of time surprisingly well. That’s pretty tricky for indie folk rock.

Amyl and the Sniffers
Big Attraction & Giddy Up

Punk’s not dead, and it will never die, and that’s because of Australia. Sorry - I meant it’s because of Australian groups. Groups like Amyl and the Sniffers. The two EPs bundled together here were each written and recorded in a matter of seconds, and that’s no bad thing. Tracks like ‘Blowjobs’ and ‘Mole (Sniff Sniff)’ buzz with a great spur-of-the-moment energy.

Steve Lacy, Yuji Takahashi, Takehisa Kosugi
Distant Voices

This 1976 meeting of three avant-jazz heavyweights gets reissued by Aguirre (La Monte Young, Steve Reich, Terry Riley). Pianist Yuji Takehashi - a player so innovative that Iannis Xenakis composed especially for him - joined forces with soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy and electric violinist/Fluxus favourite Takehisa Kosugi in a 1975 recording session while Lacy was in Japan. The resulting record employs unusual techniques - at times Takahashi plays with bells attached to his hands while Lacy pressed his saxophone up to the skin of a kettle drum - to create this surreal piece. Distant Voices takes in free jazz, cosmic jazz, post-minimalist composition and serialism.

Instant Music
Instant Music

Kraftwerk inspired poppy post-punk from 80s Munich. Instant Music managed to do what so many Kraftwerk imitators failed to do, and made six fun (!) robotic tracks, including one where washing machine instructions are read out over samples of the machine in questions. Remaster released on Dark Entries.

Various
Outer Himalayan Presents

This collaborative release between Dark Entries and Sacred Bones sees them chronicling the output of British post-punk imprint Outer Himmalayan Records. Active in the late 70s and early 80s, the label’s 7” releases of bands The Magits, Soft Drinks and The Haters became formative releases in the annals of both Goth and anarcho-punk. For this reissue, the tracks have been remastered and come accompanied with a zine.

The Breeders
Mountain Battles

Mountain Battles arrived after a reasonably large hiatus from The Breeders. The sisters Deal don’t let you settle into your assumptions, with Mountain Battles taking plenty of turns and shifts across its tight running time, with darkness as well as classic Breeders bounce. Includes Kim Deal singing a song in German!

Lucky Jim

Reissue of the last album recorded by The Gun Club founder Jeffrey Lee Pierce, first released in 1993. They are still unique in their vicious combination of post-punk and country. Lucky Jim is by far the darkest entry in their discography as the band grappled with identity, death, and belonging.

Maria Monti
Il Bestario

A true cult classic if ever there was one, Maria Monti is an actress who also made super intense, wildly avant-garde music spanning folk, pop, cabaret and more. Il Bestario is a twist and a turn at every corner, both beautifully pastoral and abrasively clashing. Its reissue via Unseen Worlds has ambient lord Taylor Deupree helming the remaster.

Klaus Schulze
La Vie Electronique Volume 1.2

A further archival dose of synthesizer sound from Klaus Schulze, the hyper-productive German maestro. La Vie Electronique Volume 1.2 is a double LP set of rare (and even unreleased) material from Schulze’s early 70’s period, showcasing that beautiful organic Moog-work style. 2LP on One Way Static.

An awesome and very special record courtesy of Sony Music Turkey and Ladies on Records, celebrating Turkish women singers from the 70s and 80s. Following the success of her breakthrough third album, Honest Life, Fat Possum/House Arrest are reissuing the 2011 album by Courtney Marie Andrews, No One’s Slate Is Clean. Nas
I Am...

You’re right, Nas. You are. You’ll never be what you were - Illmatic will be your gift and your curse - but you definitely still are. I Am… will be the record in which you find yourself caught between your roots and your reality. It will see you try to rekindle past flames - a song called ‘N.Y. State Of Mind Pt. II’, sampling yourself (twice) on ‘Nas Is Like’ - as well as keep the commercial clout of 1996’s It Was Written. It will feature beats by DJ Premier and Timbaland, and guest spots from DMX and Aaliyah. It will be a double-album in order to accommodate all of this heavy-lifting. It will come out in 1999, but will be repressed in 2018. And most excitingly of all, it will be stocked by Norman Records.

Bonny Billy
More Revery

More Revery is a lesser-known 2000-era Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy album, which found him stowing his band away to cover an array of favourite songs. All sorts of genres are drawn in and made Bonnie: PJ Harvey, Tim McGraw and Bill Withers are all represented here. This rare collection is now available on vinyl from Temporary Residence.

Big Black
Racer-X

This is the one where Albini was aiming for a big rock sound but made a mess of it and instead came up with something samey and monolithic  - no bad thing as it turns out. It was released in April 1985 just before their 'Atomizer' debut as they slowly got to the vicious sound we know and (perhaps) love.

Arve Henriksen
Chiaroscuro

In 2004, Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen brought Audun Kleive and Jan Bang to a variety of locations to live-compose the ten tracks of Chiaroscuro, whose sound is as much dominated by subtle sampling and electronics as percussion and trumpet. Chiaroscuro is a really remarkable listen that is frankly gorgeous. Released on vinyl for the first time by Rune Grammofon.

Sun Ra
God Is More Than Love Can Ever Be

A Sun Ra treasure trove exists in God Is More than Love Can Ever Be, a lesser known release from deep within the cosmic jazzer's discog. Rather than shift through the sound mirages the Arkestra built its renown on, this is a set of simple jazz material, offering a snapshot of the instinctive understanding shared between Ra's players.

Yellow Magic Orchestra
YMO USA & Yellow Magic Orchestra

The legendary Yellow Magic Orchestra’s classic debut album is available on vinyl again! A major synth-pop progenitor here: influential enough to be up there with Kraftwerk. Includes the well known single ‘Firecracker’. A significant (and very fun!) record, reissued on clear vinyl in an edition of 1000, on Music On Vinyl.

Bob & Gene
If This World Were Mine

Not to be mistaken for television's most healthily dysfunctional father-son duo, Bob & Gene is a pair of soul artists given a revived slice of history with If This World Were Mine, initially reissued ten years ago. Teenagers who met and recorded gospel together, their work was originally put out on the label of Bob's father, Mo Do Records, but enjoys the adulation he gave it today in wider scenes due to its warm and attentive renditions. Finally back in the mix via Daptone.

Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths
Young Gifted and Black

An old reggae favourite from the killer duo of Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths here, reissued once more by Sanctuary. Originally a Trojan album, Young Gifted And Black contains the familiar-to-all title track, as well as soulful reggae covers of the likes of Bob Dylan. Repressed to heavyweight 180g vinyl.

Julian Cope
Saint Julian

Saint Julian was the third solo album from former Teardrop Explode and arch druid Julian Cope. After a couple of eccentric works beloved of fans but without mainstream success, Saint Julian dialled up the commercial sheen and contained its own Top 40 smash in World Shut Your Mouth proving that you can make music on your own sometimes barely explainable terms and also be a pop star at the same time. What a man.
