Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good – The Final Kill

The story is now woven into the annals of rock history - Dave Mustaine gets kicked out of Metallica, forms Megadeth out of spite, blows most of the money that’s meant to go on recording the band’s debut LP on booze and drugs and then turns in a poorly-produced but still tough-as-hell thrash metal LP entitled Killing Is My Business … And Business Is Good. This ‘Final Kill’ version of the 1985 album sees Mark Lewis fix the shaky mixing and also includes 1986/87 live takes, demos and the long-omitted cover of ‘These Boots Were Made For Walkin’’.

Sold out - sorry!

Zamrock's most supreme band, Witch (which means We Intend To Cause Havoc) continue to get the reissue treatment from Now-Again with the more overtly experimental 'Kuomboka'. And by experimental, we mean, you know the opposite: slow jams, modest rock, and all the American pop influence in the world. As always, though, there's still a good amount of Zambian tradition and propulsive rhythms.

William Basinski
Silent Night

William Basinski with another one of those long-ass bits of ambient niceness that he does so well here. Across the course of an hour Silent Night undulates slowly between hissing drones and heavenly synth choirs. Basinski says that he thinks of the hissing sound as crickets, which sounds about right. Arvo Pärt, The Caretaker, yada yada yada.

Whirlwind Heat
Do Rabbits Wonder

You may wonder why the relatively unheard Do Rabbits Wonder by Whirlwind Heat has a re-issue on Third Man. Well it's possibly due to the fact that it is produced by and guest stars a certain Jack White. The album initially came out on XL and garnered lots of interest despite being at at time impenetrable blur of punk blues with a colour coded tracklist. Certainly a unique back corner of Mr Jack's storied history.

Alanis Obomsawin
Bush Lady

Rare and underrated, Alanis Obomsawin's Bush Lady is a cult classic finally gaining new listeners through Montreal's Constellation. Considering the lives lived by Canada's First Nations, and the political threats to their existence, the record is both a crucial sonic document and activist statement, offering a record created with painstaking attention to detail by Obomsawin (who rerecorded due to dissatisfaction with an early take). An essential fixture in the history of folk music.

Simple to put this one. A triple LP or double CD anthology which includes literally everything U-Men released from the studio, plus an additional 5 tracks that have never been released, all remastered. Their unique sound paved they way for the grunge generation in Seattle, so if you like your alt-rock punky, avantgarde, frantic and party centric, hail the U-Men.

Mulatu Astatke
Afro Latin Soul Vol. 2

The resurgent interest in Ethio-jazz trailblazer Mulatu Astatke leads to another reissue. This one is culled from Astatke’s time spent living in New York in the 1960s, one of the most fruitful and groundbreaking periods of his career. On Afro Latin Soul Vol. 2 Astatke and his Ethiopian Quintet fuse their native jazz sound with Latin styles and r ‘n’ b in a manner that set Astatke on his way to some of his most vital and pioneering work. Re-pressed by Strut.

Panama! 2 (Latin Sounds, Cumbia, Tropical & Calypso Funk On the Isthmus 1967-77)

This 2009 compilation does one thing, and it does it very well. It introduces listeners to some of Panama’s fantastic music, much of it virtually unknown elsewhere. With much of the material sourced from 45’s in radio station basements, Panama! 2 is the best way to hear these rich groovy blends of calypso, cumbia and Latin musics. Reissued by Soundway.

The Nineteenth Whole

While this 1972 LP from short-lived Indianapolis group The Nineteenth Whole may not exactly be a household name, some big-hitters were involved in its creation. Rudy Van Gelder was at the controls for this one, and Cornell Dupree - the guitarist who laid down the opening lick for Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect’ - also shows up. They add polish to the five pieces of organ-led soul jazz that make up Smilin'. Now reissued by Tidal Waves Music.

Donald Austin
Crazy Legs

Crazy Legs is the only LP laid down by Memphis guitarist Donald Austin. Originally released in 1973, the record has become a highly sought-after work of golden-age funk. It’s no surprise - the likes of the title track and ‘Hot Rooster’ are outrageously groovy takes from a time where Motown, soul, funk and disco were just beginning to cross-pollinate. Now reissued as a limited run by Tidal Waves Music.

Haruomi Hosono, reissued here to the joy of all! Omni Sight Seeing was recorded in 1989, during a period where Hosono’s Yellow Magic Orchestra was taking a break. Klaus Schulze & Pete Namlook
The Dark Side Of The Moog Vol. 2

The legendary Klaus Schulze and his similarly synth-toting pal Pete Namlook loved their Pink Floyd, like any good psychedelic travellers would, and they carried this inspiration over to their Dark Side Of The Moog series, of which this is Volume Two. Subtitled A Saucerful of Ambience, this is another colossal slab of Schulzetastic space-synth magic. Double LP release from Music On Vinyl.

Black Sabbath
Supersonic Years: The Seventies Singles Box Set

This is a real treat for the Black Sabbath superfan in your life: a bespoke boxset of 7” singles from the band’s early 1970’s glory years. Ten remastered singles, including ‘Iron Man’, ‘Paranoid’ and ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’, each on a reproduction 7” with its attendant B-side. And half the songs are present in their very rare single edit forms. Oh and the picture sleeves and liner notes also within the box are something to behold too. From Sanctuary.

Listen All Around: The Golden Age of Central and East African Music

Straight outta the International Library of African Music comes this selection of performances recorded in Central and East Africa between 1950 and 1958 by Hugh Tracey. Rumba is the stylistic spine running through the material on this double CD set, though the joy is of course in the variations. Fantastic music and recordings, with informative book material also included. From Dust To Digital.

Wild Things (16 Freakbeat Nuggets From 1966 - 1968)

It’s unlikely that you’ll have heard of many of the bands on Wild Things (16 Freakbeat Nuggets 1966-1968) but if you like The Pretty Things, The Who, The Yardbirds then this fuzzed-up collection of little known ‘60s New Zealand bands will most definitely float your boat. It’s been transferred in Mono from the original master tapes and compiled by John Baker.

Ambienti Coassiali
Vol. 1 - Room 1-6

In the late 1980s, armed with nothing but a Yamaha DX7 and a Revox A77 tape machine, the Italian ambient/concrète duo Capricorni Pneumatici produced this remarkable work of chillaxed FM synthesis under the name Ambienti Coassiali. This vinyl & DVD reissue makes this lush material available for the first time since the original cassette.

This Kind Of Punishment
This Kind Of Punishment

Following the demise of their previous band Nocturnal Projections, New Zealand brothers Peter and Graeme Jeffries began to deconstruct their post punk sound into something more pastoral and intimate. This became the handful of recordings they made as This Kind of Punishment. This is superb, intimate and thoughtful music with classical and baroque overtones.

Tom Waits

In 2006 the living legend that is Tom Waits released a 56 song triple album named Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards, featuring all manner of goodies. Now, for the first time, the three albums are being released as separate units! Brawlers is of course the fightiest set of the three, being full of blues and bar songs delivered with a lusty eye and the smoke of whisky. Reissued by Anti.

Arise (Expanded Edition)

Brazilian metal band Sepultura originally released their fourth album, Arise, in 1991. It had the sound of a band really getting it together and was the album that multiplied their fan base. This expanded edition features the original album, gloriously remastered, with 28 previously unreleased tracks on the CD version. The Double LP version will have fewer additional tracks. On Rhino.

The Sisters of Mercy

Floodland was the first album produced by Sisters Of Mercy version two, released in 1987. One of the most successful examples of their morose gothery. This box-set reissue is a sprawling beast, adding the three 12” singles released in the same period, each of which is rich with alternate and extended mixes and non-album B-sides. On Rhino

Tuscan Castle And Country Seat

Italian library music is full of strange treasures, but here’s one that particularly stands out. Tuscan Castle and Country Seat, put together in 1978 for a TV documentary by the young composer Teisco, is full of psychedelic electronics and krauty guitars and rhythms, assembled in ways that seem far too attention-grabbing for background music. Replica reissue on The Roundtable.

The Criminal Minds
Guilty As Charged

The Criminal Minds were a Buckinghamshire hip-hop crew active in the early 90’s who produced music in bedrooms and slipped it out in small-run releases. Guilty As Charged is their 1990 debut release, and it is extremely hard to find. This very welcome reissue has been sourced from old vinyl copies and carefully mastered to sound as good as possible: crucially, the bite of the music has been maintained.

Word Gets Around

Welsh band Stereophonics were one of the most successful acts to survive Britpop. Word Gets Around was their debut album and was originally released in 1997. Sweet Sweet Dreams

A 1984 LP created in Trinidad and Tobago, Sweet Sweet Dreams is the synth-riddled reggae/soca project of Winston Bailey, also known as Shadow. The clever blend of genres on this record make it a mesmerising 80s time capsule, with hazy synth noodlings and hypnotic reggae beats providing a backdrop to Bailey and his backing singers' distinguished calypsonian vocals. Released as Vinyl LP on the Jamwax label.

The Words Inbetween

Another superlative piece of English guitar folk from the fertile ground that was the early 70’s. Less heard than many of its contemporaries, now's the time to hear The Words In Between.

Tom Waits
Small Change

Small Change was a significant leap forward in Waits’ career, a varied batch of songs that  balance humour and pathos and are full of character. It opens with the mournful classic Tom Traubert's Blues. Then there’s the burlesque romps Pasties and a G-String and Step Right Up, the painfully hilarious The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me) and the Runyonesque noir of the title track.

Contract In Blood: A History Of UK Thrash Metal

Cherry Red Records with another box set here. Thrash metal from the UK has a tough time of it. Seen as a second-class scene when compared to those of the U.S.A. or Brazil, even the larger acts - Venom, Onslaught etc. - have received comparatively little global renown. These five CDs look to change all that. Accompanied by an informative booklet and released concurrently with a book of the same name, Contract In Blood contains studio recordings, demos and live takes by both big-hitters and small-fry from the world of British thrash. Some of the cuts date back to the early 80s, and ten have never been previously released.

Tyler Bates
Watchmen (Original Motion Picture Score)

The score for the late-2000s box office smash Watchmen gets a vinyl release via Rhino. It came from the workhouse of Guardians Of The Galaxy/John Wick/Deadpool II composer and Marilyn Manson guitarist Tyler Bates, and it’s a nice piece of post-Matrix franchise blockbuster noir. There’s also a light Oldboy flavour to some of the instrumentals. Doesn’t include the My Chemical Romance tie-in tune, which is either a blessing or a curse depending on which angle you're looking at it from.

Bernard Herrmann
North by Northwest (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

It may not be the most well-known of Bernard Herrmann’s scores (hello Psycho), but the score for Hitchcock’s North by Northwest perfectly captures the composer’s ability to blend melodic and atonal elements, creating tense, engaging and avant garde pieces for large orchestra. Now it’s been beautifully repressed on double vinyl LP from Silva Screen.

Dave Grusin
3 Days Of The Condor (Original Soundtrack Recording)

Sydney Pollack’s 1975 thriller Three Days Of The Condor, a tale of murder, espionage and intrigue, comes with a very fine soundtrack by Dave Grusin, a jazz pianist. As well as plenty of jazz flavours, the soundtrack suite dabbles in exactly the kind of soul and funk you want in a spy film. Now available on vinyl again for the first time since 1975!

Shina Williams & His African Percussionists
African Dances

Despite the slew of compilations and reissues of music from 70s and 80s Lagos in the recent years, relatively little attention has been given to Shina Williams. The Nigerian band leader was one of the finest exponents of the funky Lagos style that fused Afrobeat, reggae, disco, highlife and more. There are few instances where his sound is in fuller effect than African Dances. One of these three lengthy dancefloor smashes is the crucial ‘Agboju Logun’.

The Fall

Unsurprisingly, Mark E. Smith fell out with Kier Stewart and Simon Spencer, the production duo initially chosen to produce Levitate. Lack of payment meant that The Fall’s 19th album disappeared with the the pair. An album was finished but only three tracks survived from rehearsal sessions including Spencer, which Mark E. Smith renamed Spencer Must Die! Levitate was the last album to feature bassist Steve Hanley and drummer Karl Burns, both had been with the group long enough to help shape the sound of The Fall. 3LP or 2CD on Cherry Red, remastered by Andy Pearce with sleeve notes by Daryl Easlea.

Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar
Raga Yaman (Rudra Veena // Seattle // 15 March 1986)

Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar is the nineteenth generation of a family who have played the dhrupad style of devotional music. For those unfamiliar with dhrupad, it is considered to show raga in its purest form. Recorded at the end of his last US tour performing one of his signature ragas. One of two albums Stephen O'Malley's Ideologic Organ is releasing to celebrate the life and music of Dagar.

Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar is the nineteenth generation of a family who have played the dhrupad style of devotional music. For those unfamiliar with dhrupad, it is considered to show raga in its purest form. This recording was made at a house show, offering a more intimate example of dhrupad. One of two albums Stephen O'Malley's Ideologic Organ is releasing to celebrate the life and music of Dagar.

A welcome vinyl reissue of 1996's Stag; Melvins' 8th studio album and the last to be released on a major label (they were dropped by Atlantic the following year). American trio / sometimes four-piece Melvins were named after a supermarket supervisor that a band member worked under, and despised. Get yourself hooked up with this double gatefold edition, mastered from the original analog tapes. Or, the single LP (as per the original pressing) on Music On Vinyl.

Mothers' Garden (The Funky Sounds Of Female Africa 1975 - 1984)

Africa Seven - the label behind the Africa Airways series - drop another nice collection of old grooves. These tracks are all by artists who identify as female, a gender which has been woefully under-represented in the African 70s/80s reissue explosion of the past decade or so. Hopefully compilations Mothers’ Garden this will start to redress the balance. Contains tunes from Miriam Makeba and Letta Mbulu, among others.

A Certain Ratio
Good Together

Good Together was originally released in 1989 and marked a temporary foray into the world of major labels for A Certain Ratio. After five albums with Factory Records, the Manchester post-punk band signed for A&M for album number 6. Presumably they wanted to be label-mates with Sting. Good Together is reissued by Mute (who DO NOT release Sting records) and available on white double vinyl LP and CD.

Colin Newman
Provisionally Entitled The Singing Fish

Colin Newman kept busy during Wire’s temporary early 80’s split, releasing three rather interesting solo records. Provisionally entitled the singing fish is a little unusual, with some entirely non-post-punk sounds creeping in there. Released on vinyl and CD, with the CD edition coming with a whole extra disc of demos and the like. On Sentient Sonics.

Colin Newman
Not To

Colin Newman kept busy during Wire’s temporary early 80’s split, releasing three rather interesting solo records. Although in the case of Not To, some members of Wire were involved in the recording… Released on vinyl and CD: with the CD edition coming with an extra disc of mostly unreleased home studio demos. On Sentient Sonics.
