The Morning Echoes Of Detroit
Echoes Of The Gospel

The Morning Echoes Of Detroit are gospel group. They formed way back in the pre-back-in-the-day days of the 1940s. Echoes Of The Gospel was originally released in 1967. Singer/songwriter Kelley Stoltz sent a copy of this album to Third Man Records as a thank you gift. The label were so pleased they decided to reissue it. LP on Third Man Records, remastered from original 1967 master tapes by Warren Defever.

Planet Earth

Sony are reissuing some later albums by Prince. Here’s album No.32, Planet Earth, which originally saw the light of day via a free giveaway CD with some bloody newspaper or other. Now it’s being reissued on CD and purple vinyl (what else?!) so at last you can buy your copy without feeling the shame of buying certain publications. A few of his old cohorts played on the album, including Michael Bland, Wendy & Lisa and Sheila E. Includes the singles Guitar, Chelsea Rogers and Future Baby Mama.

3121 was the 31st studio album by Prince. It was originally released in 2006. Sony are reissuing a bunch of his later albums, and this one will be pressed on vinyl for the first time. It’s weird and funky and beautiful, just like you’d expect from the small purple one. Purple coloured vinyl and CD on Sony.

Musicology was the first of three albums Prince released in 2004 and his 28th album in all.  Prince intended the album to to be a musical education to those who listened which seems like a bit of an arrogant thing to say, but then, Prince wouldn’t have been Prince without having saying stuff like that. Anyway, perhaps buy a copy and get yourself educated. Double purple coloured vinyl and CD on Sony.

Adolfo Waitzman
Pensione paura

Pensione Paura aka Hotel Fear, is an Italian horror film directed by Francesco Barilli. The score by Aldofo Waitzman has sweeping romance juxtaposed with jarring and unnerving horror, all revolving around a melancholic piano theme. Waitzman was an Argentinian composer who worked mostly in Spanish film and TV. Red coloured vinyl 2LP on Arrow Records.

John Carpenter & Alan Howarth
Escape From New York

Wowzers, total power team up here from film soundtrack-synth wizards John Carpenter and Alan Howarth. This is a reissue of their classic accompaniment to Escape From New York, present here in expanded form: the first time this version has been pressed to vinyl. Double LP remastered from the original tapes (naturally), on Silva Screen.

Robert Hood
Internal Empire

When truly groundbreaking records are made, they sound as fresh 25 years after their initial release as they did back in the day. This is most-certainly true of Robert Hood’s minimal techno masterpiece Internal Empire. The album has been remastered and re-cut on CD and 180g vinyl and will be released through its original label, Tresor.

Dominique Guiot
L'Univers De La Mer

Exciting reissue of Dominique Guiot’s 1978 library album 'L'Univers De La Mer'. It’s a great lost treasure trove of moog, mellotron, guitar, and clarinet; like 70s prog stripped of grandiosity, the pure aim now exploration. It’s the sense of the composer’s unabashed intrigue in the possibilities of melody and sound that makes this such an endearing release, and where certain tones may have aged, the ideas at play remain timeless.

Derek Bailey & Cyro Baptista

Derek Bailey’s ever-idiosyncratic free-improvised guitar meets the assorted instruments of Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista. This makes for a very interesting session, as Baptista keeps trying to lure Bailey into rhythmic structures, while Bailey tries to pull Baptista into timbral and textural play. Really very enjoyable stuff, reissued here with an extra LP of previously unreleased material.

Derek Bailey & Tony Coe

A fabulous reissue of a session by free-improvising guitar supremo Derek Bailey and reeds player Tony Coe. The two players dance around each other, with timbres and pitches responding to one another with great dexterity. The clarinet and acoustic guitar sound great together, with modernist rigour and free-flowing expression in equal measure. Time is reissued by Honest Jon’s.

Yuri Morozov
Strange Angels

Compiled by Alan Gubby of psych-experimenters Revbjelde Strange Angels presents the first release of Yuri Morozov to the west, after recording for over 40 years and producing more than 46 albums that covered prog, psych, industrial, experimental electronics akin to Radiophonic Workshop, and freak out folk. Being banned and monitored by the KGB means this is the first time this stuff has been on vinyl and CD.

Prefab Sprout
I Trawl The Megahertz

I Trawl The Megahertz was originally released as a solo album by Prefab Sprout's  Paddy McAloon in 2003 but was pretty much ignored by everyone apart from us Sprout obsessives. Shame because it is a incredible work...the album is largely instrumental and spoken word, featuring some his most experimental work, such as the 22 minute title track and one track that, according to McAloon, sounds like a depressed Van McCoy. Now that it won't do the brand too much harm, it is now being issued as a Prefab Sprout album. 2LP (featuring an etched side) and CD on Sony.

35007, or Loose, if you turn your calculator upside down, are a psych/space/stoner/prog rock band. They hail from Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Their eponymous album, which is also known as Into The Void We Travelled, is their second album and was originally released in 1997. Gold vinyl 2LP repress on Stickman.

Tricky’s Maxinquaye has retained its power and significance long after the term / scene that it first appeared in, trip-hop, has faded from favour. Working closely with vocalist Martina Topley-Bird, Tricky lurks his way around some real classics. 180 gram vinyl reissue for the 20th anniversary, on Music On Vinyl.

The Mover
Final Sickness

The Mover apparently survived his Final Sickness in 1993, as the music is still here with us in 2019. Planet Phuture are doing us all a favour here with a reissue with this heavy classic, which is crammed with drum machines and synth details as far as you can here. Techno with industrial and electro leanings, you’ll surely want to hear Final Sickness again. The Mover is, of course, Marc Arcardipane real name Marc Trauner - legendary German techno producer and founder of Planet Core Productions, Dance Ecstasy 2001 etc.

Caspar Brötzmann Massaker
Black Axis

Originally released in 1989, Black Axis was the second album by Caspar Brötzmann Massaker. The power trio were dominated by Brötzmann’s gigantic guitar sound and could go from thumping rock to cacophonous racket in the space of one song. Sounds like fun to me. LP and CD on Southern Lord.

The Cardigans
Long Gone Before Daylight

Long Gone Before Daylight was the fifth album by The Cardigans. This album marked a change in their sound as they introduced elements of alternative rock and country. Nina Persson teamed up with Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse to form A Camp after this album, possibly an influence on the band’s new sound. Features the single You're The Storm. 180g vinyl LP, in gatefold sleeve on Polydor.

Time's Up

The Buzzcock’s legendary 1976 demos, now known as Time’s Up and originally only available as bootlegs, capture all the shambling, deadpan and violent joys of punk’s first wave. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band’s first EP, Domino are bringing these joys back to heavyweight vinyl LP (with download code) and CD.

Sly & Robbie
Dub For Tubs - A Tribute To King Tubby

Everyone loves King Tubby, and nobody loved him more so than Sly & Robbie, the killer rhythm section behind many of the best ever reggae recordings. Dubs For Tubs is a suitable tribute to the great dub monarch, with digital versions of many classics presented here. Play it loud on a system with plenty of bass-weight, and raise a glass to King Tubby.

Bob Marley and the Wailers
Soul Rebels

Soul Rebels was the second album by Bob Marley and The Wailers, originally released in 1970 and listed as being by The Wailers.  It was a concept album, with all the tracks linked by themes of rebellion. It was produced by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and featured a cover, of James Brown’s ‘My Cup’. A roots reggae classic. Reissue LP and CD on Radiation Roots.

Al Lover
Cave Ritual

Producer Al Lover continues to extend the inexplicable fondness musicians have for diamond shapes on their album covers with Cave Ritual, which I believe also has some music: a fascinating mix of fiery psych riffs, gooey synth and real producer shit makes this one up, the beats as firm and thrilling as ever. If Michael Bay ever makes a film on a handheld camera, he knows who to call.

Al Lover
Cave Ritual Redux

Al Lover takes the splice-tastic production techniques of a hip-hop beatmaker and applies them to the sonic domain of psych-rock, creating an interesting effect. His Cave Ritual LP last year was much enjoyed, but apparently Lover thought he could do better, as he’s decided to Redux it with an even newer approach. On Stolen Body.

Purple Image
Purple Image

*Extremely John Lydon voice* Purple Imaaa-aaaaaage! Purple Imaaa-aaaaaage! Of course, this LP actually has nothing to do with The Artist Formerly Known As Johnny. It’s actually a rare 1970 funk-rock record from Cleveland, Ohio band Purple Image. As one could probably guess from the title there’s more than a bit of Hendrix to this one. This reissue comes courtesy of Tidal Waves Music.

Thee Hypnotics
Righteously Recharged

A huge vinyl box set from 90's rockers Thee Hypnotics called Righteously Recharged . . . probably called this because it's a collection of their tracks 'recharged' so to speak. This box set contains all sorts of goodies including Come Down Heavy on a violet vinyl, Soul, Glitter & Sin on a red vinyl, The Very Crystal Speed Machine on a clear vinyl (this one was never actually released in the UK!!!), plus early demos and journalist notes. Remastered and released on Beggars Arkive.

Clarence Séti
Jungle Quest

We don’t know much about this material that Clarence Seti put together in 1991, partly because it was only ever a demo CD. But all that matters is the music, these twelve tracks that we are now able to hear. Jungle Quest will certainly require you to have a taste for digital keyboards, and Seti really lays into his collection here, but this will charm many. Out on Lily Record.

Fist Of Facts
Fugitive Vesco

Fist Of Facts is the project Liquid Liquid singer, Salvatore Principato, started following the demise of the New York no-wavers in 1984. He started recording Fugitive Vesco in a rented studio with Ken ‘man’ Cladiera. Liquid Liquid drummer, Scott Hartley, Mark Cunningham from Mars, Felice Rosser and a whole bunch of other people contributed to the album. The project expanded on the groove, politics and exploratory dub furrow that was ploughed in Liquid Liquid. LP+7” set on Telephone Explosion.

Sigur Rós
( )

Typically enigmatically titled, ( ) was the third full length album by Icelandic wonderkids Sigur Ros. Not only is that album untitled (well kinda) but all the songs are untitled leaving you to wallow in their emotive pillows of sound without anything to distract you. A true musical journey and one of their best missives to date. Now re-issued on Krunk.

Pearl Jam

High time for some Pearl Jam reissues to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the No Code-heralded next phase of their career. Yield, their fifth album, was originally released in 1998, and finds the band in proper alt-rock mode. This reissue, the first time Yield has been on vinyl since back-in-the-day, is out on Legacy in a die-cut jacket.

Cannibal Ox
The Cold Vein (Deluxe Edition)

Sold out - sorry!

Highly influential recorder, producer and composer David Axelrod teamed up with offspring Michael for this rather obscure project. Nooney Rickett’s mournful voice dances over Axelrod & Son Ltd.’s arrangements of faintly Latin-tinged, 1970s West-coast psych; all elegantly sun-baked, throat-parched and artfully dreary.

Mission Of Burma

Post-punk survivors Mission Of Burma are still going strong, god bless ‘em, but here we have an opportunity to look back at their earliest days, with a reissue of their 1982 debut. Vs sounds damn rad, scratchy and furious and driving and abrasive. The reissue on Fire comes as CD or LP, and a few bonus tracks are thrown in to sweeten the deal.

Third Noise Principle: Formative North American Electronica 1975-1984

Very exciting and jam-packed set on Cherry Red: Third Noise Principle, a four CD box-set that covers nine crucial years in the development of electronic music in North America. The huge tracklist doesn’t just stick to one area (e.g. academic electronics or the nightclub), but includes all kinds of different areas, from Smegma and Suicide to The Residents and Laurie Spiegel. Top value release.

Heldon IV

Presumably the fourth Heldon album, also known as Agneta Nilsson. First released in 1976, this chunky bit of French psychedelic rock has been reissued by Bureau B. The band dart between synth-jams, gentle ambience, and genuine guitar led freak outs. Not sure what's going on on the album art but I hope the baby's okay.

Wolfgang Voigt’s second album under his lauded forest techno moniker GAS is back, singly tree-issued on Kompakt. First released in ‘97, Zauberberg offers Voigt’s revolving branches of hazy, throbbing ambient at their most ambiguous, as if unsure of what really waits out there in the woods. The third track especially is one of his masterpieces.

Massive Attack V Mad Professor
No Protection

The Mad Professor does what he does best on the Bristolian trip-hop progenitors second album Protection. No Protection takes Massive Attacks’ claustrophobic paranoia and opens it up, cranks the bass and amplifies the influence of soundsystem culture, for a complete dub remix. 180 gram vinyl reissue on Universal.

Green River
Rehab Doll

Mark Arm? Stone Gossard? Jeff Ament? Mudhoney? Pearl Jam? You love those bands, right? Well this is where it all started, Rehab Doll, the first and only full length LP by Seattle’s Green River. (It actually started with an EP and a mini LP shortly before this, but y’know what I mean.) The band featured all the above people and some other guys. You know what happened in Seattle and the music world after this, but check out what was the nascent Seattle music scene by buying this LP, or CD on Sub Pop.

Green River
Dry As A Bone

Green River formed in Seattle in 1984 and their influence on the scene that grew from their inception and demise is now a massive part of musical history. They featured Mark Arm who went on to great things in Mudhoney, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard who went on to form Pearl Jam and Bruce Fairweather who had a stint in Love Battery. Dry As A Bone was a mini LP and was released in 1987. Reissue LP and CD on Sub Pop.

Black Man's Pride 3: None Shall Escape The Judgement Of The Almighty

None indeed. Soul Jazz Records have re-released so many great records from the Studio One archives over the past God-knows-how-many years, but even by their standards the label’s recent Black Man’s Pride series has seen them unearth some gems. The third instalment in the run, None Shall Escape The Judgement Of The Almighty, is another stonking collection of Rasta classics. Features cuts from Horace Andy, Sugar Minott, Freddie McGregor and many more.

Revolution Girl Style Now!

Sweet! This is the absolute earliest material of furious Riot Grrrl legends Bikini Kill, consisting of their first demo tape. This is also the first ever vinyl appearance of Revolution Girl Style Now! on the vinyl medium, and includes three extra tracks not on the original release. So DIY that the tape runs out before one of the tracks is done.

Bikini Kill
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah EP

You cannot beat a bit of proper riot grrl. Here's a re-release of Bikini Kill’s second EP Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah, featuring both the original tracks, and on the b-side, seven previously unreleased recordings of live shows and tapes. Vinyl that's better than you and that will kick your arse.

Robert Earley
Themes For TV Drama: The Music of Robert Earley

Robert Earley (also known as Robert Sharples, prominently known for his role on Opportunity Knocks) provided themes and cues for a range of ITV television shows back in the day, including Special Branch, Man At The Top and The Rivals Of Sherlock Holmes. Some of these highly characterful pieces have been gathered up by the Network label for release on 10” vinyl: a lovely little set.

Baby Dee
Love's Small Song

Baby Dee’s third LP Love’s Small Song gets reissued courtesy of Tin Angel (Polar Bear, Pick A Piper). The 2002 record remains a uniquely moving piece of avant-garde songwriting. While the first part is made up of delicate baroque pop numbers that preclude the successes of Antony And The Johnsons, Love’s Small Song’s second disc is a 55-minute piece of birdsong recordings.

Ric Kaestner
Music For Massage II

Did you know Ric Kaestner’s soothing New Age cult cassette Music for Massage had a Part II? Unlike Part I, its release was strictly low-key, purely for tape collectors and masseuses and never actually intended for public sale. Sifted Sand Records dutifully honour these conditions by reissuing the album for public sale on black vinyl, coloured vinyl, CD and cassette. Pick your poison and oil up!

Robbie Basho
Venus In Cancer

Venus In Cancer was the sixth album by American acoustic guitarist, Robbie Basho. It was originally released in 1969 on the Blue Thumb label. Often mentioned in the the same breaths as fellow virtuoso players John Fahey and Leo Kottke,  Basho threw a whole load of eastern influences into his music which set him apart. His influence can be seen in the work of acts such as Six Organs Of Admittance, James Blackshaw and Jack Rose, to name but a few. Reissue LP on Traffic Entertainment.

Americo Brito and Djarama
Nha D’stine

This reissue of Americo Brito and Djarama's Nha D'stine is the second release on Mar & Sol. Brito was born in Cape Verde before moving to Portugal, and finally Rotterdam. There he and Djarama recorded Nha D'stine, at the time one of the most successful example of Cape Veridian music. Eight tracks of positive dance music.

The Darkside
Complete Studio Masters

The Darkside emerged in Rugby from the ashes of Spacemen 3, led by Pete "Bassman" Bain. They weren't a million miles away from their parent band, though more upbeat and conventional, less minimal and monomaniacal, with more reflections of sixties psychedelia. They released a pair of albums and a smattering of singles and EPs In the early nineties. All of these are contained on this five-disc box, rounded out with various stray tracks and rarities.

Heartworn Highways – Original Soundtrack

The documentary film Heartworn Highways and its soundtrack perfectly captures the time when country troubadours Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and Steve Earle, among others, began to wrestle the credibility of country music back from the shiny over-production that was going on in Nashville. The film and the musicians showed their love for the folk and bluegrass roots of country music.

Johnny Cash
Original Sun Sound Of Johnny Cash

This would be the last Sun recording for the legendary country singer Johnny Cash, remastered here from the original tapes. Cash remains an extraordinary figure in the history of music, a highly gifted storyteller and inimitable vocal presence. This 7th record for Sun is as essential as anything of this era, reissued on a run of 1000 copies on heavyweight magenta coloured vinyl.
