Teenage Fanclub
Howdy!

Changes were afoot when Teenage Fanclub recorded their 7th album, Howdy. The band recorded an album themselves for the first time (in Dave Gilmour’s studio, no less), the addition of Finlay MacDonald on keyboards meant the band became a five-piece and Creation Records was in the process of being swallowed whole by Sony. The bands ear for a good song remained undiminished though - Dumb Dumb Dumb, My Uptight Life and Near You are some of the ingredients that make this a great listen.

Rodriguez
Coming From Reality

The story of American singer-songwriter Rodriguez has been much covered over the years particularly in the Searching for the Sugarman film. His debut Cold Fact is a stone cold (fact) classic but less is known about his second (and final album to date) Coming From Reality. It again pitches Rodriquez with Dennis Coffey and features further stream of consciousness type songs that reference Bob Dylan but has a sound all of its own.

Frank Zappa
Orchestral Favorites (40th Anniversary)

Appearing during a period of upheaval between Frank Zappa and his label Warner, Orchestral Favourites was an album of instrumentals recorded with the 37-piece Abnuceals Emuukha Electric Symphony Orchestra and released without his permission in 1979. Now, the often-overlooked record gets a deluxe overhaul and expansion for its 40th anniversary worthy of Zappa’s original vision.

Monolord
Rust

Swedish doom lords/riff masters Monolord return for their third full length album in the form of Rust. Bringing back the sheer groovability to the genre they mix heavy rock and metal tonality with bombastic low frequency rumbling power. Mixing genre luminaries such as Electric Wizard and Sleep with polished finish.

Crass
Christ - The Album

Now even Crass get the luxury boxset treatment. However there's a catch as this was released as a box set first time round  - always ahead of their time this lot. Christ- The Album was their fourth album originally released in 1982 and it contained one disc of new material and a further album containing a live show. The fact that it took a year to record had a profound effect on the band as they realised that such a gestation period would render their political statements dated. Further recordings were made quickly with a more back to basics approach but this is the one they sweated over.

Manu Chao
Clandestino / Bloody Border

The reason that Manu Chao is now the poster-boy for ‘world music’ (we’ll not delve into the politics of that particular term here) is largely due to the success of his debut LP Clandestino. This record has sold a bajillion copies since its release in 1998 and continues to be beloved for its poppy mix of Latin guitar styles, reggae, multilingual lyrics and vaguely revolutionary invective. Personally this Norman Records™ writer is most grateful for this record because it paved the way for Robbie Williams’s truly mind-boggling cover of ‘Bongo Bong’ about a decade later. This new edition of Clandestino has been remastered and contains a trio of new songs - one of which is an updated version of the title-track.

Crass
Yes Sir I Will

The Crass re-issue program continues with Yes Sir I Will. It was recorded in the wake of the Falklands war and was a sustained attack on then prime minister Margaret Thatcher and her government. The fact that the tracks were not separated by grooves made the album sound like one long anarcho-punk blast without pause. Once again totally uncompromising but a vital historical document.

Spacemen 3
Live In Europe 1989

Live in Europe 1989 does exactly what it says on the tin and captures soon-to-disband space rock legends Spacemen 3 over four nights on their final European tour and showcases a short lived four piece line up of the band. Less ragged than their earlier Performance live document, there's still plenty of off the cuff drug-fuelled experimentation and more lyrical references to the lord than you'll ever need.

Alastair Galbraith
Morse

Alasdair Galbraith started his career in Flying Nun band the Rip before embarking on a solo career. His 1992 album, 'Morse', has seen him be likened to a Dunedin version of Syd Barrett whilst also drawing influences from John Cale and fellow kiwis the Clean. Resolutely lo-fi and most definitely underrated, 'Morse' is a ‘90s underground classic.

Explosions In The Sky
How Strange, Innocence (Anniversary Edition)

Recorded in the space of two days at the end of 1999, Texan post-rock heroes Explosions In The Sky made small but significant ripples in the underground scene with a limited CD run of their humble debut How Strange, Innocence. Twenty years later, it eventually gets a thorough double-vinyl treatment, with beautiful etchings and inserts.

Joan As Police Woman
Real Life

Joan Wasser had already lived quite the life by the time she came to make her first solo LP as Joan As Policewoman. She'd been in rather good jangle pop crew the Dambuilders, collaborated with Antony & the Johnsons and dated doomed crooner Jeff Buckley. It features a collaboration with the aforementioned Antony/Anohni and received plaudits for its gentle and understated melodies. Now re-issued on clear vinyl courtesy of Play It Again Sam.

The Clash
London Calling (40th Anniversary)

Wow. Forty years since the Clash unleashed their third album London Calling. Iconic not just because of the more varied music contained within and it's legendary title track but just look at that sleeve will you? They haven't gone completely to town with this just a relatively standard LP (admittedly in special sleeve) and CD reissue plus a CD box set they've called London Calling: The Scrapbook which contains a hardback book full of memorabilia, archive material and lyrics.

A massive stack of Motorpsycho for you to dig into! Angels and Daemons at Play has been released as a double LP and a series of three EPs, plus a reissue of the late 90’s project that includes all the original material, plus three discs of rarities, B-sides and live recordings. Christ, that’s six CD’s-worth of wild Norwegianness!

Robert Wyatt
Shleep

There are many musicians who I wish would retire but one of them isn't Robert Wyatt.  Therefore it's a real shame that he is to make no more music. Instead let's be grateful that there is a large back catalogue to trawl through. 'Shleep' is his 1997 album which at that point was his first in six years. As always it's a glorious and eccentric work. He's one of the few people who can have Paul Weller guesting and yet it still doesn't put you off.

Pink Floyd
Atom Heart Mother

Pink Floyd’s fifth album, Atom Heart Mother - the one with the cow on the cover - carries on the concept that began on Ummagumma with the full band featuring on side one and individual band members basically playing solo stuff on side two. It was Pink Floyd’s first album to make No.1 in the UK.

Beastie Boys
Paul's Boutique

Its interesting to remember the fuss that was made over the Beastie Boys when they first came to parochial old Britain. For one this they started a craze in which young hoodlums stole badges off Volkswagen Passats to the anger of dads across the country. Paul's Boutique was probably the first sign that this was not just some New York novelty sent to ruin your hard earned hatchback. A more varied and sonically experimental work, it was a multi-hued record full of bravado, three-pronged vocal attacks but also inventive sampling which re-wrote the rule book of what hip-hop could be.

The Teardrop Explodes
Wilder

The glittering but short-lived career of The Teardrop Explodes came to an end with 1981’s Wilder, only the second album completed by Julian Cope and co. before they disintegrated. More complex and moodier than its predecessor, reliant on loops and synths rather than guitars, it now gets a heavyweight vinyl re-issue.

Phrydderichs Phaelda
Bruchstuecke

Since 2015 the Notes On A Journey imprint have set up shop as a discerning reissues label who specialise in free jazz rarities. Their latest find, Phrydderichs Phaelda’s LP Bruchstücke, is also one of their most intriguing. Recorded in the mid-70’s by a group of teachers and students from a West German secondary school, the album comes across like a sort of proto-acid jazz with a dollop of avant strangeness thrown in for good measure. We wonder if The Lounge Lizards ever got a load of Bruchstücke first time around. The audio has been remastered for this new edition.

Gil Evans
New Bottle Old Wine

The cast list for Gil Evans’ 1958 LP New Bottle Old Wine reads like a ‘who’s who’ of first-wave jazz greats. Cannonball Adderley is the main soloist, and in support of him we find people such as Art Blakey and Johnny Coles. Then there’s Evans himself, one of the finest arrangers of his age, turning out orchestral reinterpretations of Thelonious Monk, Jelly Roll Morton and the like. We needn’t tell you that New Bottle Old Wine is a fabulous record - and we also needn’t tell you that this new Blue Note edition, mastered from the original tapes, is as fine a way to hear it as any.

Massive Attack
Mezzanine [2018 Remaster]

Very exciting 20th anniversary remaster of Massive Attack's 1998 album Mezzanine, the kind of album that constantly finds itself on lists of the best albums of all time without losing any of its cool. Massive Attack took the trip-hop sound they had helped define and mixed it with a more rock-y energy to make something intriguing and unique. Comes with a disc of dub remixes by Mad Professor.

Coldplay

Before Chris Martin and Co. vied for world domination with the likes of U2 and….oh some other bands. Before the thought of marrying Hollywood superstars, let alone consciously uncoupling from them, had entered Mr. Martin’s head, Coldplay released a double 7” EP called Brothers & Sisters. Now it’s being reissued by Fierce Panda as two 7” singles. This one is The Sisters and features the songs 'Brothers & Sisters' and 'Only Superstition'.

To Survive

To Survive was the second album by Joan As Policewoman and is a cathartic record inspired by her mother's death from cancer. It features two super guest stars in David Sylvian and Rufus Wainwright and is here presented as a luxury re-issue in gatefold sleeve and on what is described as sun/gold coloured vinyl.

Maps
Turning The Mind

Limited edition orange vinyl re-press of Turning The Mind, the second studio album from James Chapman’s Maps project, in time for its tenth anniversary. Released in late 2009, it followed the Mercury Prize-nominated success of debut We Can Create, but failed to push Chapman’s career any further.

Joan As Police Woman
The Deep Field

Joan As Police Woman keeps trying to fool us into thinking that she’s law enforcement, but we’re onto her. We’re not sure how we know - maybe it’s the lack of a badge, the fact that we've never seen her eat a doughnut, or all the LPs she releases - but we're just sure that the one born Joan Wasser ain’t working for the man. Fourth full-length The Deep Field isn’t a copper’s record either. With its chunky soul-rock grooves and Wasser’s Cat Power-esque songwriting turns, The Deep Field is more Lou Reed than Eddie & Lou.

Sven Libaek
To Ride A White Horse (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Sven Libaek’s soundtrack to Bob Evans’ vintage 60’s surf documentary To Ride A White Horse is one of those holy grail records beloved of film and jazz fans alike. It has a gorgeously atmospheric feel to it, with some tracks doing a whole film’s worth of scene-conjuring in just a few minutes. Limited edition reissue LP on Votary.

Tommy Guerrero
From The Soil To The Soul

Although released in 2006 on CD by Quannum Records, skateboarder-turned-musician Tommy Guerrero’s seminal fourth album is released on vinyl for the first time. From The Soil To The Soul may turn its hand to various genres throughout, but it remains precise and well-executed. Original artwork by graffiti artist Twist revamped by Guerrero, now on bright red.

Luc Ferrari
Music Promenade / Unheimlich Schön

Recollection GRM - a sub-label of Editions Mego, dontcha know - present a couple of important early recordings from late musique concrete pioneer Luc Ferrari. Side A offers up the 1970 premier of ‘Music Promenade’, a piece for four tape recorders that has plenty of crossover with what Karlheinz Stockhausen and Steve Reich were doing at the time. On the other side we get 1971’s investigation of the voice ‘Unheimlich Schön’.

Alessandro Alessandroni
Spontaneous

Four Flies re-issues one of the holy grails of the library music scene, after five years of careful research and exhumation. Spontaneous, recorded in the mid-Seventies by Italian composer Alessandro Alessandroni, returns to vinyl, with its mixture of soft rock, jazz and downtempo breaks ageing remarkably well in the subsequent four decades.

Alice Coltrane
Transcendence

Significant changes in Alice Coltrane’s life happened in 1977, the year Transcendence was released. She became a Swamini, teaching Hindu and began performing and recording devotional chants. It does mean she more-or-less left jazz behind, but there's some bluesy organ on here! This was one of two LPs she released that year. Reissue LP on Antactica Starts Here.

The Lightning Seeds
Jolification

The band that brought us 'Three Lions', the Lightning Seeds, are reissuing their smash-hit album 'Jollification'. It's a gently psychedelic synth-pop romp that's full of Ian Broudie's winsome vocals, big choruses, and the odd hands-aloft moment. It's easy to write the Lightning Seeds off as a novelty act, but 'Jollification' goes a long way in showing how they deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as bands like Pet Shops Boys, Orange Juice, and the La's.

Cybotron
Enter

Cybotron was of course the outfit who appeared right at the very beginning of the Detroit techno explosion. They featured Juan Atkins who would go on to be a major player in the movement going forward. Here they produce a fascinating form of cosmic funk which drew comparisons with Kraftwerk and George Clinton and were eventually sampled on Missy Elliott's Lose Control which is just one reason of many why the album is considered such a classic.

Primal Scream
Maximum Rock ‘n’ Roll: The Singles Volume 1

Primal Scream. They’re a band. Sometimes, most of Screamadelica aside they’re a rock ‘n’ roll band. Here we have Maximum Rock ‘n’ Roll: The Singles Vol. 1, a collection of singles with seventeen tracks that go all the way back to 1986’s Velocity Girl up to 1998’s Kill All Hippies. Double 180g vinyl LP on Columbia.

Don Slepian
Sea of Bliss

Originally released as a cassette only way back in 1980, Don Slepian’s milestone composition Sea of Bliss finally gets its first ever issue on vinyl. Recorded using the legendarily difficult-to-use Alles digital synthesiser, the album’s two side-long compositions became landmarks in what became known as the new age genre.

Don Blackman
Just Can’t Stay Away

A re-issue of a little-known early Noughties soul banger by Don Blackman, this special 7” vinyl version of the singer’s ‘Just Can’t Stay Away’ gets a loving re-packaging courtesy of Melodies International, the re-issues label set up by Floating Points’ Sam Shepherd. Conrad Schnitzler
Conditions of the Gas Giant

The late Conrad Schnitzler first issued Conditions Of The Gas Giant on a teeny tiny cassette run back in the late 1980’s. Now the fine folk at Bureau B have snapped up the music for a virgin vinyl/CD release. Conditions Of The Gas Giant is classic Schnitzler fare - slightly proggy avant-tronica that meets in the space between Jean-Michel Jarre and Holger Czukay.

Ulver
Trolsk Sortmetall 1993 – 1997

Century Media press up a new edition of Ulver’s retrospective box-set Trolsk Sortmetall 1993-1997. The collection brings together the Norwegian group’s first three LPs and their debut demo Vargnatt. Also included are some bonus recordings of the band rehearsing what would eventually become their third album Nattens madrigal. Trolsk Sortmetall 1993-1997 acts as a neat summation of Ulver's black metal phase.

Richenel
La Diferencia

A hit in his native Holland throughout the 1980s, Richenel was originally an art-school squatter in Amsterdam making lo-fi bedroom pop tapes before that was a proper thing. This album has been circulating in the lost-gems end of the blogosphere for some years, and now re-issuers extraordinaire Music From Memory are giving it a second chance on vinyl. It’s worth checking - punky funk in the vein of ESG, the lo-fi recording gives it great warmth and depth.

Ian MacFarlane
Planetarium

Shhh... it's private press. Have some respect. This much unknown ambient synth record was made by Cybotron maverick Ian MacFarlane, whose music may once have been a little weird to most ears. An experimentalist with conspiracies and surrealisms in his head, he envisioned Planetarium as a suite of meditations relating new age music to the galaxy. The start of a great MacFarlane unearthing.

Pink Turns Blue
If Two Worlds Kiss

Reissue of the debut LP from Cologne’s Pink Turns Blue here. 1987’s If Two Worlds Kiss is a seminal text of both darkwave and Goth, its doomy new-wave grooves and vampy vocals a harbinger of what was to come. This is still a hugely important record all these years later and is richly deserving of reissue. This new edition of If Two Worlds Kiss includes ‘A Moment Sometimes’, a track that hasn’t always made it onto vinyl pressings of the album in the past.

Pink Turns Blue
Meta

Pink Turns Blue formed in Germany in the 1980s, but it was in former Yugoslavia where they recorded 'Meta'. They worked with Jané Krizaj, who'd worked with Laibach, to produce an album that is to this day considered one of darkwave's masterpiece. And they did this while working in studio that was less than... up to date.

Wipers
Follow Blind

Originally released on Restless back in 1987, Follow Blind was the fifth studio album by pioneering Pacific Northwestern punk band Wipers, who would later gain the patronage of Kurt Cobain. While this album often goes underappreciated in their catalogue, perhaps this silver-coloured vinyl re-issue will cause a re-evaluation.

Be With Records are the ones behind this reissue of Marcia Griffiths’ wonderful debut LP Sweet And Nice. They take the task of reissuing one of reggae’s most important full-lengths very seriously, doing justice to the seminal 1974 album by including no fewer than fourteen bonus tracks on this new edition. Griffiths’ voice does the rest, her talent and soul melting away the intervening 45 years.

Piero Milesi
The Nuclear Observatory Of Mr. Nanof

The exhumation of the archives of Italian soundtrack master Piero Milesi uncovers The Nuclear Observatory Of Mr. Nanof, a collection of field recordings and pieces made for various films. Done with melodic but glacial and meditative synthesisers and a small chamber ensemble, the compilation is available on vinyl for the first time in 33 years.

King Tubby

A classic King Tubby dub from '75 which features various tracks seen floating about on compilations over the years but have yet to have a home on one piece of wax. Sounding / Way is a collaboration between American composer, electronic pioneer and accordion player, Pauline Oliveros and fellow accordionist, Guy Klucevsek who has worked with all sorts of artists from Laurie Anderson to Kronos Quartet. Oliveros created deep listening - spiritual and meditative music for mind and body. Sounding/Way was only ever released on cassette in 1986, so this vinyl pressing is a real treat.

Giuliano Sorgini

Originally made for the function of TV documentary score, Guiliano Sorgini’s Africa Oscura sees the composer explore his own take on African music and mythology. This LP, previously unreleased and salvaged by Four Flies Records, finds the composer at the height of his abilities.

Robert Pollard with Doug Gillard
Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Department

A 20th anniversary re-issue of the fourth in Guided By Voices’ Fading Captain series of side-projects, Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Department saw the band’s inimitable frontman Robert Pollard buddy up with his long-term guitarist and lieutenant Doug Gillard for 15 tracks of idiosyncratic indie-rock. Includes ‘Do Something Real’, which soundtracked the finale of Steven Soderbergh’s Full Frontal movie.

Kill It Kid
Feet Fall Heavy

Not a new record by the late '90s noiseniks but a re-issue of their second album, 2001's Feet Fall Heavy. The band were known initially for a bluesy delivery with folky instrumentation but by the time this album rolled around they'd begun the move to a more rock based sound with heavy duty nods to the likes of the White Stripes. First time on vinyl.

Disco Inferno
Technicolour

This was the final missive from Disco Inferno before they split in 1995 and emerged after a tumultuous time for the band after they had their gear stolen which basically contained all the material they were working on. Still, the band regrouped and made an album that was a lot more straightforward than the previous wildly inventive DI Go Pop yet contained a series of stellar songs including worldwide-hit-that-never-was 'It's A Kids World'.

65daysofstatic
No Man's Sky: Music For An Infinite Universe

Epic game No Man's Sky is moving so slowly towards its release date that its soundtrack is coming out before it. The RPG is part space opera, part galactic filibuster, offering an endlessly generative online universe for you to travel around -- in which the designers have claimed you will never meet a fellow traveller. Supplying the soundtrack to this infinite labour of love? 65daysofstatic, of course. The Sheffield post-rockers used new programmes to create a supplementary generative soundtrack for the game, and while it'll be a while 'til we'll be able to hear every inch of it (maybe we never will), the official soundtrack offers ten original tracks from the score, plus six of the game's soundscapes. It's just like the old saying goes: in space... there are post-rock bands.

Though not sporting any notable singles the record continued the Banshees obsession with the darker side of pop with disquieting lyrics to match.
