African Head Charge
Vision Of A Psychedelic Africa

There was a big gap in the African Head Charge history between 1993 and 2005 when there was not but a squeak from their headquarters. That all changed in 2005 with this triumphant return of Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah and Adrian Sherwood - collaborating once again on music that sounded somewhat like the album title. Hypnotic beats, dubbed-out effects and tribal psychedelia  - it is all here.

African Head Charge
Churchical Chant Of The Iyabinghi

Churchical Chant of the Iyabinghi by psychedelic-dub warriors African Head Charge is a compilation of previously unreleased remixes of tracks from their Songs Of Praise and In Pursuit Of Shashamane Land albums. It was sequenced by Patrick Dokter so you can lose yourself in the music, which is just what you want to do with this kind of thing, isn’t it?

Bruce Haack
Preservation Tapes

The Preservation Tapes by Bruce Haack is a selection of material from the late Canadian electronic music pioneer’s archive. All selections are previously unreleased. The music mainly comes from a time when Haack was recording the proudly Christian label, Sparrow Records. Whilst the lyrics contain unfamiliar religious themes, Haack’s signature vocoder sound is a distinctive feature. Beck and Stereolab have been known to cover Haack’s material in the past. LP on Telephone Explosion.

Bruce Springsteen
18 Tracks

The self-explanatorily titled 18 Tracks was originally released in 1999, aimed at Bruce Springsteen’s more casual fanbase. It was a condensed version of the previous year’s Tracks box set, but notably included ‘The Promise’, an unreleased fan favourite dating back to 1978’s Darkness On The Edge of Town. Now, it arrives as a double-vinyl package.

The Fiery Furnaces
Blueberry Boat

Back in the days when it was a proper print rag, you could always tell a good album by a 1 out of 10 score in NME. That judgement ensured I picked up Fiery Furnaces second LP which took the bluesy White Stripes rock of their debut and ran with it to the asylum taking in bits of Beefheart, Zappa and the Cardiacs along the way. It's bonkers but brilliant.

Melodic Energy Commission
Migration Of The Snails

Melodic Energy Commission were a Canadian space rock collective who featured members of Hawkwind and who played an exploratory blend of hippie-ish psychedelia, guitar freak outs and out there electronics. This rarity has now been re-issued and should appeal to fans of Amon Düüll II, Tangerine Dream, Hawkwind.

Jónsi & Alex Somers
Riceboy Sleeps (2019 Analogue Remaster)

Jonsi and Alex Somers don't just play together, they work together... or they did once on the Riceboy Sleeps album, originally released in 2009 but now available on posh triple vinyl with rounded corners and now including the All Animals EP. This is gorgeous ambience of the highest order which will appeal to people who like Sigur Ros but also to people (me) who don't like Sigur Ros but know good atmospheric downtempo electronics when they hear it. Delve in.

The Sea and Cake
Oui

Oui is the fifth album by Chicago band The Sea And Cake. The band feature Archer Prewitt, Sam Prekop who are both solo artists in their own right, renowned producer John McEntire and bassist Eric Claridge. They have also played their part in bands such as Coctails, Shrimpboat and Tortoise.  Their music mixes Tropicalia, african guitar music and indie pop in a kind of Chicagoan post-jazz mash up. Oui was originally released in 2000, so this repress is more than due.

Turbonegro
Hot Cars & Spent Contraceptives

Marking the 30th anniversary of the spectacular Turbonegro, Indie Recordings re-issues the Norwegian deathpunk veterans’ debut studio album Hot Cars & Spent Contraceptives. Originally released on the tiny Big Ball label in 1992, it gave an insight into the group’s completely unique sound, the energy of punk and hardcore meeting the theatrics of metal.

Turbonegro
Never Is Forever

Marking the 30th anniversary of the spectacular Turbonegro, Indie Recordings re-issues the third studio album Never Is Forever from the Norwegian deathpunk veterans. Originally released on the tiny Dog Job label, this album was a self-proclaimed “tribute to Blue Öyster Cult”, and saw them move away from the lo-fi nature of their first two records.

Os Mutantes
Mutantes

Os Mutantes (the Mutants) were sort of the Brazilian the Beatles. They blended pop, tropicalia and psychedelia and have become influential to newer artists largely because of *that* Song A Minha Menina which has become something like ubiquitous. Mutantes was their second album originally released in 1969 and continued their genre destroying rise to popularity mostly in their native country.

Benoît Pioulard
Slow spark, soft spoke

I love you Benoît, and if that's quite alright, I love you Benoît. Yes, Norman favourite Benoît Pioulard finally has a follow-up to The Benoît Pioulard Listening Matter at the ready. That LP was a wonderful collection of folksy songs reminiscent of Jose Gonzalez and the like, washed out in the usual crackling haze of his more typical drone music. He's off to a good start with the alliterative title Slow spark, soft spoke, which would surely impress an English Literature teacher. Here he returns to the profound, melancholic textures of his drone music, offering slow-releasing lo-fi for you to chime along with your feelings to. It already came out on tape so you might have already heard it -- but if not, snatch up this gem.

Momoko Kikuchi
Adventure

Re-mastered from the original tapes and pressed onto purple vinyl, J-pop pioneer Momoko Kikuchi’s Adventure returns to the LP format for the first time since its release way back in 1986. The sound of an already established artist discovering the full extent of their potential (Kikuchi had only just turned 18 when it was released), Adventure utterly encapsulates the sound of Eighties Japanese pop.

Jad Fair And Daniel Johnston
It's Spooky

A much needed vinyl re-issue of Jad Fair and Daniel Johnston's collaborative LP It's Spooky. The pair had already collaborated most notably on Johnston's exquisite Some Things Last A Long Time but here the duo got together in the studio to make this sprawling opus. Two twin geniuses of American lo-fi together in one place. The re-issue has been remastered and comes with a bonus flexi. On 'Casper White' vinyl (groan).

Bourbonese Qualk
Hope

Formed in the context of an age of counter-cultural protest in 1979 against the new Thatcher-led Tory government, British experimentalists Bourbonese Qualk eschewed almost all of the music industry’s conventions in a career that lasted 24 years. Hope, their second full-length record, was released in 1984 and now receives a CD re-issue.

Christopher Young
Hellbound: Hellraiser II

Just in time for Halloween and the 30th anniversary of the release of Hellbound: Hellraiser II comes the original soundtrack. It was scored by Christopher Young, who also provided the creepy backdrop for the first film. This limited edition is pressed on bloodshed red with black smoke coloured vinyl and contains tracks that were not previously available on vinyl.

The Master Musicians Of Jajouka featuring Bachir Attar
Apocalypse Across The Sky

Once recorded by the Stones’ guitarist Brian Jones for what would be considered the first ‘world music’ album, The Master Musicians Of Jajouka have always been a stunning experience to behold. Apocalypse Across The Sky, recorded in 1991 by legendary producer Bill Laswell with Bachir Attar as the bandleader, gets a re-mastered re-issue on double vinyl.

Waxahatchee
American Weekend

For her first record as Waxahatchee, Katie Crutchfield hauled up in her room with a guitar and a lot of remorse, crafting skeletal folk-punk songs about relationships and romantic non-starters. It's a less electric and rawking affair than her previous work in P.S. Eliot with twin sister Alison (of Swearin'), instead recalling the artists on Plan-It-X as well as Hop Along and Nana Grizol.

The Human League
Octopus

Octopus was the 7th album by Sheffield synth-pop pioneers Human League. It was originally released in 1995. It is the first album by the band as the trio of Phil Oakey, Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley.  Here we have a 25th anniversary reissue available on LP or 2CD, the latter format includes a bunch of bonus tracks.

Use No Hooks
The Job

The Job is a delightful exhumation of previously unreleased recordings from Australian cult icons Use No Hooks. Active from 1979 to 1984 and featuring members of INXS side-project Max Q and Primitive Calculators, a nine-piece line-up of the band recorded a session in late 1983 that disappeared into the vaults. This seven-track vinyl compilation allows these recordings to finally see the light of day, with six bonus tracks on the digital edition.

Negative Approach
Tied Down

Here's the debut album from Detroit hardcore group Negative Approach. Their first EP became a punk classic with its ferocious pace (ten songs in under nine minutes), and 'Tied Down' only furthered the impact with more breakneck speeds, razor blade riffing and John Brannon's inimitable barked vocals. Napalm Death named a song after this group and there's even a hint of Oi! and UK82 in here too!

The Who
The Kids Are Alright

The Kids Are Alright by The Who was originally released in 1979 as the soundtrack to the film of the same name. It features performances of classic tracks by the band including My Generation for US TV show The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour from 1967. At the end of the song Keith Moon did what Keith Moon tends to do and blew up his drum kit, much to the chagrin of Pete Townsend and his ears. It also includes songs from Woodstock and rare live tracks.

Embrace
If You've Never Been

Desperately looking for the next Oasis, the industry happened upon the Huddersfield brothers McNamara and snapped up Embrace for mega-bucks in the late Nineties. Their first three albums now get the vinyl re-issue treatment, including 2001’s tender and underrated If You’ve Never Been. While it delivered two UK Top Forty hits in ‘Wonder’ and ‘Make It Last’, it flopped commercially and spelled the end of the band… for a while...

The Who
Quadrophenia

Here we have the movie soundtrack to the classic 1979 mod film Quadrophenia by The Who. Some of the songs on here have been re-recorded from the The Who’s original 1973 double album of the same name. It also includes songs that weren’t on the original album along with tracks by Booker T & The MGs, James Brown and The Ronettes.

The Springfields
Singles 1986-1991

During the late Eighties and early Nineties, Ric Menck and Paul Chastain became central players in the American indie-pop scene, playing in groups such as Velvet Crush, Bag O’ Shells and Choo Choo Train. Their most popular and well-loved guise, however, was The Springfields. Singles 1986-1991 collects the five glorious power-pop singles they released on various labels, adding a bonus track.

Irreversible Entanglements
Irreversible Entanglements

With their new mini-odyssey ‘Bread Out of Stone’ recently landing, it’s an appropriate time for this vinyl re-issue of Irreversible Entanglements’ self-titled debut album. Originally released in 2017 and winning plaudits from The Quietus to Gilles Peterson, it essayed the experiences of Black suffering, survival and power over four wonderful free-jazz explorations.

The Wedding Present
Tommy

The ever-prolific pioneers of UK indie, The Wedding Present, are embarking on an extensive reissue campaign, releasing five albums, two compilations and an EP from the band’s ‘80s and 90’s output, all of which are expanded multi-disc sets crammed with bonus material, extensive sleeve notes, art work and general Weddos ephemera. Most synonymous for their familiar depiction of relationships using acerbic wit, frontman David Gedge is a virtuoso when it comes to the bittersweet love song. Originally released in 1988, 'Tommy' is a compilation that gathers the first four singles of The Wedding Present, a long with their B-sides and selected tracks from two early radio sessions, providing a comprehensive overview of the band's familiarly fast-paced, lo-fi output prior to their debut LP 'George Best' in 1987.

Abner Jay
Man Walked On The Moon

Abner Jay was a multi-instrumentalist from Georgia who gave an eccentric take on blues and folk music. Man Walked On The Moon is a compilation of some ‘hits’ and previously unreleased recordings. The ‘hits’ include I’m So Depressed, whilst the unreleased tracks include the title track and are played by Jay using his usual one band band set up of banjo, harmonica and foot-powered drums.

Arawak
Accadde A.......

This album by Arawak (aka Luciano Simoncini) is a rare and elusive library music favourite from the homeland of such things, 1970’s Italy. Accadde… A is a funky, laid-back suite of sounds, well-suited to sexy lounges and dreamy boudoirs. This reissue is available on either black or splatter vinyl, from Golden Pavilion.

Tommy Guerrero
A Little Bit Of Somethin'

What a beautiful little release. The album art pretty much sums up the sound on the LP, so as you can imagine, the tracks are mellow and guitar-y. A Little Bit Of Somethin' by Tommy Guerrero has been reissued on vinyl LP on Be With Records and would be a nice addition to the chilled out part of your record collection.

C90

You’re probably familiar with the ‘C’ series of compilation albums that were inspired by the era-defining NME C86 cassette. C90 is the latest is that lineage, compiled by the guys at Cherry Red who have a whole heap of indie box sets under their wings. C90 contains tracks by bands that went on to become household names such as The Charlatans, Manic Street Preachers, Ocean Colour Scene, Boo Radleys, Spiritualized and many more.

Dr. John
Babylon

Babylon was Dr. John’s follow-up to his classic debut Gris-Gris. It was recorded to a backdrop of political and civil unrest with the Vietnam war ongoing and the deaths of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy fresh in the memory. Dr. John was also being pursued by police for a number of misdemeanors. This heavy time for the good doctor found him mixing the swampy voodoo blues of his first album with free jazz and Beefheart-influenced avant-garde elements.

Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and Friends

Caspar Brötzmann Massaker
Koksofen

Caspar Brotzmann Massaker’s fourth album, originally released in 1993, was Koksofen. It endures as a real fans favourite - perhaps because all the hallmarks of the band’s sound were there - the massively loud highs and the destructive rumbling lows. It was recorded at legendary producer, Conny Plank’s studio in Berlin and was produced by his pals Ingo Krauss and Bruno Gephard.

Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs
Under The Covers - Vol. 3

Under The Covers Vol. 3 is the third album of covers by singer / songwriter Matthew Sweet and Bangles’ guitarist and singer Susanna Hoffs. This time they tackle songs by R.E.M., Kirsty MaColl, The Clash, Roxy Music, The Smiths and Marshall Crenshaw’s My Favourite Waste of Time, a 1986 hit in the UK for the one and only Owen Paul - remember that? Anyway, there's lots more too!

The Cure
Disintegration

Disintegration was The Cure's 8th studio album and one of their bleakest. After a few years of commercial success, the band returned to their gloomy gothy roots on an album that - despite it's lack of actual tunes - has since become somewhat of a classic. Despite it's unrelentingly somber mood it still contains future the Cure staples as Lullaby, Plainsong and Lovesong. One way or another it is a true artistic statement from Robert Smith and his long running collective.

Lotte Kærså & Græsrødderne
Jubiiilæum

The Tartelet imprint begins the 2020s by collaborating with the family of iconic Danish composer Lotte Kærså and her backing band Græsrødderne to re-issue Jubiiilæum. Originally released in the early ‘80s and now a sought-after treasure, it compiled tracks from Kærså’s first two albums (1979’s Jeg Har Set Det Selv and 1981’s Hjemme I Vores Gade.

Grizzly Bear
Horn of Plenty

Horn of Plenty was the debut Grizzly Bear album released in 2005 but at that stage Grizzly Bear was really just the bedroom recordings of Ed Droste assisted by the aptly named Chris Bear. They've come a long way since then but listening to the origins of the project is always fascinating. This new edition comes with a digital download for the full album plus a remix album featuring Ariel Pink and Efterklang amongst others.

Grant Green
Nigeria

Blue Note re-issues a long-lost gem from the hard-bop era. Recorded in 1962 but not seeing the light of day until 1980, Nigeria was a masterwork from guitar legend Grant Green, recorded with a star-studded backing band that included pianist Sonny Clark, drummer Art Blakey and bassist Sam Jones and featuring inspired covers of Cole Porter and George & Ira Gershwin.

Chet Baker
Chet Baker Sings

Known as a fine trumpet player, Chet Baker can also sing, as the title of his 1956 studio album, Chet Baker Sings confirms. Whilst this is an end-to-end classic album, it’s worth it just for his velvety rendition of My Funny Valentine. Musicians backing Chet are Russ Freeman, Carson Smith, Joe Mondragon, Jimmy Bond, Bob Neel, Larance Marable and Peter Lipman.

Louis Moholo Octet
Spirits Rejoice!

Here we have another of those highly sought-after records that people pay large amounts for in the second had market. Spirits Rejoice! By Louis Moholo Octet is a free jazz masterpiece, originally released in 1978. Now it is reissued at a more palatable price. Moholo is a South African drummer who has played in South African jazz bands, The Blue Notes and The Brotherhood of Breath as well as Afro-rock combo, Assagai.

Victor Cavini
Japan

German musician Gerhard Trede can play 50 instruments. He is also known as Victor Cavini, maker of the supreme library music album, Japan. The album has been very hard to track down, but the good folks at Be With have found it and reissued it. It is a sampler’s treasure trove featuring traditional Japanese music as played by a western musician in 1983.

Animals As Leaders
Weightless

Animals As Leaders is the metal / jazz / prog project led by virtuoso guitarist Tosin Abasi, also known for his role in Washington DC metalcore band Reflux. Weightless was their second album and first as a trio, after their debut which was recorded by Abasi alone. It was originally released in 2011. Here we have a reissue, and on purple vinyl to boot!

Bardo Pond
Adrop / Circuit VIII

Bardo Pond's back catalogue is so vast and sprawling that it is hard to know where to begin. Three Lobed have been helping fans make sense of it all with a series of reissues and Adrop/Circuit VIII is a vital component. The two records were initially issues separately as EPs but now come together on a 2LP set that perfectly encapsulates the band's brand of exploratory space-rock.

Part of a wider re-issue campaign co-ordinated by Sony with the band’s Paddy and Martin McAloon, Prefab Sprout are repackaging their 1990 fifth album Jordan: The Comeback - and, significantly, it’s the first time it’s been released internationally on vinyl. The album arguably represented the group’s most successful attempt to embrace different sounds into their modernist pop aesthetic.

Sonic Youth
Sonic Nurse

The 2004 statement by Sonic Youth, Sonic Nurse, is a late gem in the catalogue, mining that rich seam in between lush indie rock melodicism and searing guitar noise like no-one else ever quite could. Sonic Nurse is the second album for which Jim O’Rourke was an official member of the band, and the presence of Jim is always, always a good thing. Universal reissue.

Jon Gibson
Songs & Melodies, 1973-1977

American minimalist composer Jon Gibson is a contemporary of Steve Reich and Philip Glass, Terry Riley and La Monte Young. He has also worked with Arthur Russell, Barbara Benary and Julius Eastman. It is the later trio of musicians who feature on this collection, Songs & Melodies 1973-1977. A very worthwhile listen.

John Coltrane
1963: New Directions

John Coltrane burned brilliantly brightly, if briefly; here are five of his best LPs. '1963: New Directions' brings together all of Coltrane's 1963 Impulse recordings, in the order in which they were laid down to tape. The year marked a transition point for Coltrane, he would go on to record 1964's 'Crescent' and 'A Love Supreme', of course. Available as a 5x LP box set and a 3x CD set and include artwork featuring original collages. On Impulse!

The Kinks
Something Else

A classic from the archives, Something Else is the fifth studio album by The Kinks and gets a loving reissue on Sanctuary. On 140g vinyl with the original UK tracklisting, it’s the last Kinks album to be produced by Shel Talmy and showcases one part of a mid-career high that’s still an influence today. Out on vinyl LP from Sanctuary.

Angelo Badalamenti
Twin Peaks (Death Waltz Edition)

This new vinyl edition of the Twin Peaks score has been pressed on ‘damn fine coffee’-coloured vinyl, an extremely Death Waltz Recording Company thing to do. Mind you, they’re a good label who do good records, and there are arguably few good-er records than Angelo Badalamenti’s acclaimed score for the original Twin Peaks. You probably know how this thing goes now - ethereal, loungey, Lynchian, peerless.

Nurse With Wound
Soliloquy For Lilith

Those kind folks at Dirter have re-issued Nurse With Wound's classic 1988-era ambient opus Soliloquy For Lilith complete with 40 minutes of unreleased tracks from the same session. it's hard to overstate the importance of this album in the ambient field. It was way ahead of its time in producing atmospheric ambient music and was even a chart topper in the ambient field back in the day.

One of the heaviest albums at the time of 1989, the group took influence from the death metal genre to shape this thrash-terpiece.

The Fall
Totale's Turns (It's Now Or Never)

The Fall have always been fond of a live album and this goes all the way back to 1980 when they issued 'Totale's Turns' but as always with the Fall there's studio recordings mixed in there as well just to confuse matters.  Here you get a 140 gram re-issue of the original album. A nice way to celebrate Mark E Smith's 60th.

The Young Gods
Super Ready / Fragmenté

The Young Gods are easily Switzerland's most powerful rock band and it's no surprise they took their name from an early Swans EP. Super Ready / Fragmenté was their 2007 LP and mixes the political and poetic with an urgent and discord readily evident in tracks like I'm The Drug. If you've not heard the Young Gods before then buckle down  -it's quite the ride.

A re-issue for Axis: Bold As Love, the second studio album from The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Originally released in December 1967, just seven months after their sensational debut album Are You Experienced?, this album often goes unheralded in comparison to Hendrix’s two all-time classics, but this effort includes some truly magical cuts like ‘If Six Was Nine’ and ‘Little Wing’.

They use bass, harmonica, organ and cardboard boxes to create their voodoo hillbilly racket which is present here on a starburst coloured vinyl edition of just 100 copies.

The Primitives
Thru The Flowers

A first ever 7” vinyl release for ‘Thru The Flowers’, the classic debut single from Coventry indie-popsters The Primitives. While it didn’t chart, it helped launch the group’s career by establishing their sound. This version is the original 1986 recording, not the subsequent re-recording that often appears on the band’s compilations, and includes a postcard and poster.

The Angelic Process
Weighing Souls With Sand

The Angelic Process combine the ear-bleeding guitar of My Bloody Valentine, the post-metal expansiveness of Neurosis and unstaunched emotion of Swans with complex musicality. Weighing Souls With Sand, the band’s third album, was originally released in 2007, after which the band was put on indefinite hiatus due to founding member Kris Angylus severely injuring his hand. It turned out to be the band’s final album after Angylus sadly took his own life in 2008.

Kearney Barton: Architect of the Northwest Sound

You may not know Kearney Barton by name but if I mention the likes of Quincy Jones, The Ventures, The Wailers, The Sonics and the Young Fresh Fellows then you might sit up and take notice. You see all of those have been recorded with this 80 year old veteran who had been recording bands for 50 years right up to his passing in 2012. This labour of love is a collection of some of the masses of tapes in his collection from local obscurities to more well known artists. Lovingly compiled by Lights in the Attic.

Los Campesinos
Romance Is Boring

Can you believe it was 10 years ago when we were all dancing at the indie discos to Los Campesinos? Romance Is Boring was their third album which broadened their sonic palette to include brass and other accoutrements. If you've struggled to get yourself a copy in the intervening years then never panic  - Wichita have re-pressed the album onto gold vinyl and chucked in a download which includes their All's Well That Ends well EP.

Blake Mills
Blake Mills

I hadn't even heard of Blake Mills despite this album ten years old (and therefore ripe for re-issue) but turns out he was in the Americana band Dawes and has produced anything from Laura Marling to Alabama Shakes. This was his debut album and was only initially available in a limited run and so this will be the first time it has been available to many listeners. Eric Clapton has called him 'phenomenal' but please don't let that put you off.

Buzzcocks
A Different Kind Of Tension

A Different Kind Of Tension was the third album by legendary Manchester punk band Buzzcocks. It was originally released in 1979. In recent times reviews by magazines such as Rolling Stone and Uncut have suggested that this is the best of their first three albums, which is making quite a statement! Reissue LP and CD on Domino.

The Durutti Column
Without Mercy

Mancunian post-punks The Durutti Column already had three LPs under their belt by the time they got round to 1984’s Without Mercy, but the previous trio of records wouldn’t have prepared their fans for what the band were about to get up to. Under the tutelage of Tony Wilson the group abandoned their wistful dream-pop style for contemporary classical composition. Drawing on the English classical tradition and the post-minimalist developments of artists like Arthur Russell, The Durutti Column end up with near forty minutes of blissy chamber music that occasionally crosses over into chamber-pop. These New Puritans may have been taking note. Now reissued with extra live recordings and bonus tracks on Factory Benelux.
