Piero Umiliani
Paranoia (Orgasmo)

Remastered from the original tapes, Piero Umiliani’s wonderful score to Umberto Lenzi’s 1969 mystery fiction film Orgasmo (released worldwide as Paranoia) is re-issued on vinyl. One of Italy’s greatest soundtrack composers, Umiliani completely captures the film’s unsettling ambience.

Radiohead
Pablo Honey

There were a lot of famous records released in the 1990s with babies on the cover. Along with Nirvana’s Nevermind and Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready To Die, Radiohead’s 1993 debut Pablo Honey is one of the decade’s most famous be-babied records. You’ll know by now that the band themselves have an indifferent (at best) relationship with this album, but heard with modern ears this is a perfectly fine example of golden-age grungey alternativa. It's got, y'know, 'Creep' on it.

Larry Young
Into Somethin'

Recorded in 1964 and released the following year, Into Somethin’ was jazz organist Larry Young’s debut album for Blue Note. Signalling a shift from soul jazz into modal territory, it was recorded with tenor saxophonist Sam Rivers, guitarist Grant Green and drummer Elvin Jones, and it now gets a re-issue on vinyl, remastered from the original tapes.

Andrew Hill
Smoke Stack

On his second album for the legendary Blue Note label, Smoke Stack, jazz pianist and composer Andrew Hill notably utilised two bassists in the form of Richard Davis and Eddie Khan, as well as drummer Roy Haynes. Re-mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes, this Sixties jazz cult classic gets a re-issue on vinyl.

Kanye West
808s & Heartbreak

As one of the most pioneering electro-rap albums of the century, 808s & Heartbreak is a golden left-turn from modern hip-hop king Kanye West. In swapping his customary classic hip-hop sounds for synthy electronica, this is one of West's esteemed highlights - which has gone on to shape a glut following genres.

Mr Oizo
M-Seq EP

Originally released in 1997, a couple of years before his chart-slaying ‘Flat Beat’, M-Seq was the second EP from French producer Quentin Dupieux under his Mr Oizo moniker. Consisting of five slithery, funky and minimalist pieces of house, it gets a limited edition re-issue on 12” via F Communications.

Heikki Sarmanto Sextet

Steven Wilson
Insurgentes

Steven Wilson is known as the lead singer and founder of English progressive rock band Porcupine Tree. Though some of their recordings were pretty much Wilson solo albums in all but name, it wasn't until 2009 when he struck out completely on his own. Insurgentes is the sort of album you'll get from a musician who has been stockpiling work. You get ballads, anthems, noise and everything in between and it's all now re-mastered and re-issued on Kscope.

Diamanda Galas
The Litanies of Satan

The Litanies of Satan is the debut album by American musician, composer and performance artist Diamanda Galas. It was originally released in 1982. The album features two side-long tracks. Side one contains the title track, the lyrics of which come from Les Fleurs du Mal, a book by 19th century French poet and essayist Charles Baudelaire. Side two, Wild Women With Steak Knives, comes from a tragedy grotesque written by Galas.

Battles
Mirrored

With Battles releasing their new LP, Juice B Crypts, what better time than now to relive Mirrored, their highly regarded 2007 debut. The band sprung out of a highly creative scene in New York which included bands such as LCD Soundsystem, Dirty Projectors and Animal Collective, to name a few. Includes the single, Atlas.

Logic System
Unit / Clash

This 12” also comes with an Italo Disco version of Unit, produced by Italian production group Mito, on the flip. On Tempo Dischi.

Vivien Goldman
Launderette

Laundrette by musician, journalist and academic Vivien Goldman is a classic of post-punk and reggae fusion. It was recorded by Adrian Sherwood in 1981. John Lydon, then of Public Image Limited along with bandmate Keith Levene also helped with the recording which took place in PiL’s studio. Goldman’s high voice was anchored by a heavy bass line played by George Oban of Aswad. This is the first ever reissue.

Jeff Buckley
Grace

Despite a number of archival and live albums, Grace was the only full studio album released by Jeff Buckley. Still, high points of the singer-songwriter's celebrated but tragically short career - 'Last Goodbye', 'Hallelujah', 'Lover, You Should Have Come Over' - were part of the collection, and deservedly so.

Emptyset
Emptyset

Emptyset is the first record by literal-building-rattlers Emptyset, first released in 2009. Here we get an early version of the duo’s remarkably stern explorations of frequencies and vibrations, rhythms and outright bass-noise. Very precise, very intense, and often fairly danceable. Double LP reissue on Subtext.

Paperclip People / LCD Soundsystem
Throw

Carl Craig’s alias Paperclip People had possibly its biggest impact with Throw, real chunky banger with disco flair as well as techno / house clout. LCD Soundsystem used to cover this one for extra-ecstatic effect in their live sets, and now they have very kindly recorded their version properly in the studio! LCD version, plus the original, on a 12” from Planet E.

Cybotron
Colossus

A hard-to-find but massively important milestone in the development of alternative rock in Australia, Cybotron’s third studio album Colossus, originally released in 1978, is finally getting a re-issue on vinyl. Forging together kosmiche influences, progressive-rock and electronic sounds, it garnered a significant cult following in the Melbourne scene.

Le Tigre
Le Tigre

Le Tigre were a political pop trio led by chief Riot Grrrl Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill, Julie Ruin). Their eponymous debut was originally released in 1999 and is now reissued on vinyl. The fusion of politically charged feminism and angry pop has made this a classic. This album contains arguably their best moment with the opening track, Deceptacon.

Norman Weeks and Revelations
Miracles

Previously only available as a part of a tiny private pressing when first released back in the late Seventies, Miracles was the solitary album from gospel preacher and singer Norman Weeks and his backing band The Revelations. Long held up as a lost treasure of soul and gospel, it’s now re-mastered and re-issued with its original artwork.

Escape From New York
Fire In My Heart

Those who know their deep disco history will be excited to see this reissue of Escape From New York’s 1984 track Fire In My Heart: a super-funky synth-slice that is simply irresistible. The track is backed with an instrumental dub version and ‘Won’t Be Your Fool’. Freshly remastered, out on Isle Of Jura.

Uneven Paths (Deviant Pop From Europe 1980 - 1991)

Even by the standards of Music From Memory, this is an oddball. Label founder Jamie Tiller gets together with Parisian crate-digger Raphael Top-Secret to comb the annals of 80s/early 90s European music and find the weirdest stuff they can that still has a hint of a pop sensibility about it. Unsurprisingly, it’s a mixed bag - synthwave sits alongside avant-jazz; spoken-word pieces suddenly break out into Depeche Mode-style electro-pop; disco beats come topped with shoegaze atmospherics. A lot of fun to be had here.

Dwight Thompson
Hypocrisy

A re-release of the beguiling 1975 album Hypocrisy from little-known American singer Dwight Thompson, one of the most highly sought-after deep funk and soul records to have emerged in the Seventies. Originally released by the tiny Dutch label Poker, it now gets a timely re-issue via ReGrooved Records.

Kraftwerk
Trans Europe Express

In a career full of peerless masterpieces, Kraftwerk’s ‘Trans Europe Express’ might be the most peerless of them all. This 1976 LP was the culmination of everything they’d done since ‘Autobahn’, a synthesiser music album at once in tune with so many others and also alone in its class. It is a love letter to Europe, to music and to the future. So, so many genres - techno, hip-hop, synth-pop - would sound very different without this ‘Trans Europe Express’.

John Coltrane
Blue Train

Blue Train by John Coltrane was recorded in 1957. Blue Train follows the jazz sub-genre of Hard Bop. It was his second album, and surprisingly the only one he ever recorded for the legendary Blue Note label, although Coltrane was never officially signed to the label. This vinyl reissue celebrates the label’s 75th anniversary.

Shirley Scott
One For Me

Shirley Scott was known as the “Queen of the Organ” for her abilities with a Hammond B3. She played what became known as soul jazz and her career stretched from the late ‘50s all the way up to the early ‘90s. As well as her solo albums, she worked with Stanley Turrentine and Eddie ‘Lockjaw’ Davis. One For Me, as the title suggests, is a very personal album that she recorded in late ‘74. The musicians included Harold Vick on tenor sax and Billy Higgins on Drums.

Peter Brötzmann
14 Love Poem

Initially released in 1984 and now re-issued on Cien Fuegos, Peter Brötzmann’s 14 Love Poems was inspired by a booklet of poetry with the same title by Kenneth Patchen. On it, the German-born free jazz saxophonist and clarinetist also plays the tárogató, and delivers an album strong on expression and emotion.

Metamatics
Midnight Sun Pig

Midnight Sun Pig by Metamatics was originally released in 2000. It is the project of Lee Anthony Jude Norris who has also recorded under the names Norken, Nacht Plank and Autumn Of Communion. He makes cerebral electronic music drawing influence from Brian Eno, Gary Numan and Depeche Mode. His work has been admired by the likes of Laurent Garnier, Nicolas Lutz, John Foxx and Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood.

Melvins
Houdini

American sludgy rockers Melvins were named after a grocery store supervisor who was despised by the band member who worked under him. Houdini was their fifth studio album, and the first on major label Atlantic (who dropped them 2 albums later). Championed by grunge Gods Nirvana, 'Houdini' was essentially the band's break-through album. Packed full of gritty yet catchy riffs, sparse yet incredibly hard hitting drums and grumbling bass, 'Houdini' is an ideal starting point into the weird and wonderful world of the Melvins.

Skinshape
Oracolo

Psychedelic bedroom pop from Palace’s bassist Skinshape. On Oracolo Will Dorey takes over all the instrumental duties and produces a joyous, dense and groove-heavy vinyl LP and CD. Borrowing influences from hip-hop, soul and funk, but spun through his unique one-man band aesthetic, Dorey is one to watch.

The B-52's
The B-52's

Kooky lyrics, nimble rhythms and irresistible pop harmonies met on The B-52’s self-titled debut album when it was released back in the summer of 1979, putting them at the front of the new-wave scene. This is a fortieth anniversary re-issue on vinyl, featuring printed lyric inserts. Eventually the SEO friend RuPaul would feature in one of their music videos.

The Kinks
The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society

The defining statement for the Davies brothers and their rotating cast of players, The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society is a precursor to all varieties of twee pop, folk rock and psychedelia, an instructive textbook in saccharine song-writing and sugar-laced guitar melodies. The Kinks had a unanimously agreed-upon classic, and this is it -- because it's the one that makes us all smile the hardest.

Leonard Cohen
New Skin For The Old Ceremony

Cohen’s fourth album sees him adopting a richer sound palette than the more spartan and downbeat trio of records that preceded it. Chelsea Hotel #2 is the one everyone knows, but the 1974 disc is full of fan favourites such as Who By Fire, Field Commander Cohen and Lover Lover Lover. The lyrical content ranges from the intimately personal to the broadly existential, leavened with plenty of deadpan humour. This vinyl reissue includes a download code.

The Prisoners
In From The Cold

The Prisoners were a superb but hopelessly out of time garage band who spent the latter part of the 1980s going against the grain. In From the Cold was their final album which, for a reason that is hard to fathom, they later disowned and was quickly deleted by Stiff subsidiary Countdown. Thankfully Acid Jazz have re-issued it so new listeners can see what the likes of superfans Noel Gallagher and Tim Burgess saw all along -  incredible songwriting and power that just came along at the wrong time.

David Shire
The Conversation (Original Movie Soundtrack)

David Shire’s score to The Conversation has never been released in full on vinyl before. The film itself, released in 1974, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Gene Hackman, is a masterful study of audio surveillance. A film with such a theme requires a well considered score, and that’s what we have. The score is notable for its minimalism which suits the tense but minimal action, very much going against the fashion at the time for overblown orchestral scores. LP on Trunk.

Cat Power
Moon Pix

Cat Power’s fourth LP Moon Pix, which was released originally in 1998. It was the product of a hallucinatory nightmare, but listening to is far more pleasant than such an experience. A contemplative, nuanced achievement from the singer/songwriter.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Are You Experienced

Classic rock doesn’t come much more classic than an album that features Purple Haze, Hey Joe and The Wind Cries Mary. The Jimi Hendrix Experience (the band that featured none other that Jimi Hendrix on guitar and vocals) announced themselves to the world with their debut Are You Experienced in 1967 and blew the socks off everyone that heard it. It still has that effect, as you will find out when you buy it….

Leonard Cohen

Vashti Bunyan
Just Another Diamond Day

Just Another Diamond Day by Vashti Bunyan, released in 1970, is notable for being a gentle folk classic, but also for being her only album until 2005’s Lookaftering. The album tells the tell of the time she left civilisation to join Donovan’s community of creative hippy types in the Hebrides. It was produced by Joe Boyd and features the musical talents of Robin Williamson of The Incredible String Band, and Simon Nicol and Dave Swarbrick of Fairport Convention. 180g reissue LP in replica gatefold sleeve, limited to 1000 copies.

port-royal
Flares

Back in 2005 post-rock was everywhere and over in Italy one of the finest proponents were port-royal. The album blended ambient and electronics to the post-rock and referenced the likes of Explosions in the Sky and Brian Eno. Now 15 years later the band have re-issued the album on transparent blue vinyl and with fewer records of its ilk bing made these days it could be an album worth revisiting.

The Killers
Sam's Town

Sam’s Town is the second album by The Killers. It was originally released in 2006. It’s named after a casino in their hometown of Las Vegas. The album saw the band’s popularity rise even further with songs such as When You Were Young, Read My Mind, Bones and For Reasons Unknown being released as singles. It was produced by legendary producers Alan Moulder and Flood along with the band.

Masayoshi Fujita & Jan Jelinek
Schaum

Masayoshi Fujita prepares his vibraphone with pieces of metal, toys, and percussion while Jan Jelinek layers his micro loops around his performance. Their second collaborative album after playing live together for ages, the result is a bizarrely jazzy minimal electronic soundscape, kind of James Bond bad guy esque.

The House Of Love
Shine On

She-She-She-Shine On. Shine on was the debut single from London band The House Of Love. This version was originally released in 1987 as a four track 12” EP. The song was re-recorded and released again in 1990 when it became pretty popular. This is the first time the original four track EP has appeared in the 7” format.

Big Black
Songs About Fucking

You already know it, but Big Black are Steve Albini's old band of pisstakey punk-churners, offering transgressions at a super-fast rate as they squirm and snarl their way through the classic Songs About Fucking. This was the band's second and last record, offering industrial noise bluster like never before and even propping up a cover of Kraftwerk's "Model".

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Let Love In

More reissue goodness from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds; this time it's the rather sweetly titled Let Love In, to which we ask Nick: what's the catch? The catch is of course that this is as ever a dark collection of cuts about loneliness and romantic insecurity (just look at those titles: "Do You Love Me?"; "Nobody's Baby Now"; Lay Me Low"). Somebody make a time machine and go back and hug the 1994 Nick Cave.

To celebrate we have a 25th Anniversary Deluxe version of the album which features 10 extra tracks made up of b-sides and rarities from the same period. This was the album that contained the single Inbetweener and its follow-up Vegas.

Blut Aus Nord
The Work Which Transforms God

The Work Which Transforms God is the critically acclaimed fourth album by French avant garde black metal band Blut Aus Nord. It was originally released in 2003 and is widely regarded as one of their best albums. Terrorizer magazine crowned it album of the year. Remastered and pressed on half clear / half black vinyl.

Blut Aus Nord
Ultima Thulée

Blut Aus Nord are a French Black Metal band who, unlike alot of other bands working in that genre have nothing to do with satanism. Instead they use avant garde influences to push the boundaries of Black Metal leading to boundary pushing work that straddles across genres. Ultima Thulée is their debut LP from 1995 which now comes on remastered clear with blue splatter wax.

Blut Aus Nord
Memoria Vetusta II – Dialogue with the Stars

Memoria Vetusta II – Dialogue with the Stars is the seventh album by French band Blut Aus Nord. It was originally released in 2009. They play avant garde black metal which incorporates a very heavy version of shoegaze. Despite their black metal status, they’ve decided to reissue this on orange marbled vinyl which you’d think would be too bright for them. Nevertheless it will look great on your turntable and sound great blaring from your speakers.

Thee Oh Sees
Dog Poison

Dog Poison was the third album to be written under Thee Oh Sees moniker and was originally released in 2009 on the fledgling Captured Tracks. It appears from the liner notes that lead Oh See John Dwyer does most things on this album which even then was finding new ways to keep their garage rock template fresh injecting more textures and layers than their earlier scuzz racket.

Jack Briece
Heterophonious Fool

Self-produced in a batch of 50 cassettes and only distributed privately, Heterophonious Fool was the only studio album from avant-garde / experimental electronic artist Jack Briece, released four years before his tragically young death in 1988. His reputation ought to be boosted with this vinyl re-issue via Concentric Circles.

Hellhammer
Apocalyptic Raids

Swiss extreme / black metal band Hellhammer pioneered the genre in the early ‘80s along with acts such as Venom and Bathory. They featured Tom G Warrior and Martin Eric Ain who went on to form the equally influential Celtic Frost. Their 1984 classic, Apocalyptic Raids is getting a welcome reissue on LP and CD with bonus material and booklets.

Eluvium
Copia

One of the finest artists in the neo-classical genre is of course Richard Clayderman...no sorry Eluvium. Read the review for the full office misunderstanding that seems barely plausible with music of such beauty. Eluvium has made lots of gorgeous records but Copia is possibly one of the best, broadening his brush strokes to include strings, brass and of course piano. Now remastered onto 2LP by Temporary Residence.

This Mortal Coil
It'll End In Tears

Oh lord this is the album. Back in the 80's no-one had any time for the likes of Big Star or Tim Buckley. 4AD head honcho was different though. He had exquisite taste and was also ambitious enough to put together a floating member super group to re-interpret some of his favourite songs. It Will End In Tears will always be most known for the now classic Cocteau Twins assisted reading of Buckley's 'Song To The Siren', but their version of Roy Harper's 'Another Day' runs it close as do two (count em) Big Star songs.

Throbbing Gristle
D.O.A. The Third And Final Report Of Throbbing Gristle

The music of industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle is back on their own Industrial Records after 30 years of knocking around other labels, so it is only right that you can get your favourite eerie durge music from the source. D.O.A. The Third And Final Report Of Throbbing Gristle is the second LP from the group, originally released in 1978.

Fela Kuti
Zombie

Fela Kuti is known for having a huge catalogue, but over the years many of his albums have been nigh-on forgotten. The title track of Zombie is an acknowledged Fela classic, but the album as a whole hasn’t been available as a stand-alone vinyl since the original release. Mmmm, tasty political afrobeat.... LP on Knitting Factory.

The Raincoats
The Raincoats (40th Anniversary Edition)

Luckily for record labels everywhere, a lot of good music was released in 1979 so we have plenty of 40th Anniversary re-issues to look forward to this year. The latest is the debut LP from the Raincoats, their spindly surprisingly tuneful art-rock influenced generations of future legends such as Kurt Cobain and Kim Gordon and is now available on marble vinyl, re-mastered from the original tapes with limited edition prints from founding members Gina Birch and Ana Da Silva.

Bauhaus
Mask

Quite simply, one of the greatest post-punk / proto-goth albums of all time. Even better than their near-perfect debut, 1981’s Mask saw Bauhaus successfully expand their template while retaining everything that made them so beloved when they broke out. The album is presented on limited-edition yellow vinyl here.

Psychedelic Sex Kicks (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

The brilliant word 'sleazalogue' is used to describe Psychedelic Sex Kicks - a motion picture documenting the drugs, sex and high jinks of 1967 era San Fransisco. The soundtrack is a psychedelic sound experience full of all those familiar sounds of the era such as tabla, flute, sitar and things going backwards. An aptly mind bending listen. Comes on coloured vinyl with a DVD of the film.

Celebrity Skin was the third album from Courtney Love and Hole. Their previous album Live Through This had left behind the racket of debut Pretty on the Inside forging a more radio-friendly sound. David Bowie
Boys Keep Swinging

The David Bowie re-issue fest continues with a 40th anniversary re-press of Boys Keep Swinging. The track was the first single to be taken from his then current Lodger album and here contains I Pray, Ole on the B Side a track unreleased since the Lodger re-issue. David Holmes
The Holy Pictures

David Holmes’ 2008 LP The Holy Pictures receives its first vinyl pressing courtesy of 3 Loop Music. ‘I Heard Wonders’ is the hit - you’ll recognise it from the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics - but there’s so much more to this record. The Northern Irish singer-songwriter crams everything from Motorik Krautrock to The Jesus And Mary Chain to hauntological drone into this dense, powerful paean to his hometown of Belfast.

Hiroshi Yoshimura
Music For Nine Postcards

Hiroshi Yoshimura was a pioneer of environmental music, a parallel to Brian Eno. Yoshimura created ambient music to fit with physical spaces, music to be in and live through. .'Music For Nine Postcards' is keyboard and Rhodes played sweetly and softly - simples. The first vinyl reissue since its original release in 1982 comes with full reproduction of original artwork and sleeve, plus new liner notes.

The Subways
Young For Eternity

I'm trying to remember the Subways...nope they are not coming to me. Anyway Young For Eternity was their debut album released in 2005 and produced by Ian Broudie (the Lightning Seeds). It is a full-bore racket containing bluesy thrash, high octane indie and some more considered reflective moments. It's all here again on red vinyl.

New Order
Low-Life

Low-Life was the moment New Order truly crossed over from post-punkers with the DNA of their previous incarnation Joy Division still in their bones to the innovative dance-rockers they later became. It was notable for three excellent examples of their new form with tracks like Sub Culture, The Perfect Kiss and Love Vigilantes but tracks like Elegia show that they'd lost none of their skill for transcendental atmospherics.

Ghostface Killah’s 2001 solo statement is a pretty crucial part of the wider Wu-Tang puzzle, as well as a damn good time in its own right. RZA and The Alchemist deal with much of the production, and MC guests include Slick Rick and Raekwon. Bulletproof Wallets is reissued to double vinyl by Get On Down.

Mark Lanegan
Whiskey For The Holy Ghost

Mark Lanegan’s second solo album is back on the streets again in the form of this double gatefold LP. Whiskey For The Holy Ghost is dark and dramatic and deeply American, pulling away from the grunge sound of his Screaming Trees (although there is a guest appearance from Dan Peters of Mudhoney). Reissued by Sub Pop.

Drexciya
Digital Tsunami

Sadly ‘electro’ is now all too often synonymous with mostly terrible stuff -- electroclash, electro swing, etc. Well, Drexciya was electro at its best - hard, dark, and fast. As a new wave of young producers are obviously going back to these roots -- a quick listen to Objekt’s Flatland, one of the best records of 2014, is testament to this -- it’s nice to see Tresor reissuing this on 12”. Keep an eye out for Tresor’s upcoming reissue of Drexciya’s double-LP ‘Harness the Storm’, too.

Motohiko Hamase
Anecdote

An official double-vinyl re-issue for Anecdote, the incredibly rare live album recorded in 1987 at Tokyo’s Wacoal Art Center. Backed by Toshio Kaji (pianos/synths) and Yasunori Yamaguchi (percussion), Motohiko Hamase shows why he was one of the prime figures in the Japanese ambient scene in the Eighties.

Motohiko Hamase
Technodrome

Originally released in 1993, Technodrome saw jazz bassist and experimental artist Motohiko Hamase turn even further into electronic territory with an album of ambient house that was both minimalistic and funky. It now gets a re-issue on CD, and for the first time ever on double-vinyl as part of the Esplanade Series.
