David Dondero
The Transient

A long overdue re-issue on heavyweight vinyl for David Dondero’s cult classic 2003 album The Transient. Taking its cues from classic Americana going back to Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger and updating it for the new millennium, it comes on a special ‘ashes-on-the-highway’ coloured vinyl too.

Tears For Fears
The Hurting

An absolute milestone for Phil as his favourite childhood album finally arrived into Norman Records. It contains all Tears For Fears early and great tracks like Pale Shelter, Change and Mad World and sold absolutely billions of copies. Listen to it again, you'll have forgotten how good it tastes.

The Killers
Hot Fuss

What a time to be alive. Fumbling over the lyrics of Somebody Told Me, hunting down crushes on MySpace, and worrying about the exact definition of “indie rock” - Hot Fuss surely embodies 2004 (but without the facial acne). Now finally reissued on beautiful 180 gram vinyl. Relive The Killers' finest hour!

Pecker
Pecker Power

Here’s a rare example of Japan’s reggae dub undercurrent circa 1980: Pecker Power, by Pecker. The album mixes Japanese musicians like Minako Yoshida with familiar Jamaican original legends like Sly & Robbie and members of The Wailers, for an electronically-augmented cross-continental dub adventure. LP reissue on Rush Hour.

Linda Majika / Thoughts Visions & Dreams feat. Ray Phiri
Let's Make A Deal / Step Out Of My Life

Originally released in South Africa in the late '80s, these two rare cuts have been put together on super loud 12" vinyl. Linda Majika's Let's Make A Deal was a noted club track of the era and over on the flip the late night sax workout Step Out of My Life by Thoughts Visions and Dreams was a popular tune of the times which sees its first vinyl pressing since its original release.

Adaye
Turn It Up

Turn It Up by Adaye was originally released in 1983. It is a prime cut of South African guitar funk-meets-disco. Emil Zoghby, head of Heads Music and Ray Phiri co-wrote the track which features Al Etto on vocals. Turn It Up was the only song Adaye released - they were a one-off project featuring members of Stimela fka The Cannibals. They also performed under the names Street Kids and Kumasi.

Nadine Shah
Love Your Dum And Mad

Since her debut, Love Your Dum and Mad landed in 2013, Nadine Shah has gone on to release a further two albums and receive a Mercury Music Prize nomination.Time to revisit her debut, then. She cites her influences as Maria Callas, Nina Simone, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. This odd mix makes for a sound that could be described as Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds meets Broken English-era Marianne Faithful, which, as it turns out, makes for a classic debut.

King Crimson
USA (Expanded Edition)

USA was King Crimson's 1975 live album which documented their live show at Asbury Park, New Jersey the previous year. It has been remixed by Robert Fripp and Steven Wilson as part of a wider campaign of work on the King Crimson back catalogue. Previously only available on box sets this is your change to get it on heavyweight standalone vinyl.

Comus
First Utterance

First Utterance is the debut album by acid folk/prog folk band Comus. It was originally released in 1971. They’re named after a work by John Milton and a Greek god. It’s fair to say they sound different to most other bands, but their influence has spread far and wide with David Bowie, Opeth and Current 93 all claiming to be fans. Current 93 covered their first single, Diana, which is featured here.

Nine Inch Nails
The Fragile

Universal here reissue Nine Inch Nails epic double platinum double album The Fragile, in full style. The album clocks in at nearly two hours, and is an industrial alt-rock tour de force, featuring plenty of heaviness and textural experimentation alike. Remastered audio, spread luxuriously across three vinyl LPs.

Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers
Back In Your Life

Back In Your Life by Jonanthan Richman and the Modern Lovers was originally released in 1979. It’s a bit of an about turn in comparison to the Velvet Underground-meets-punk groove of Modern Lovers classic self-titled debut. The songs here, take inspiration from the ‘50s and early ‘60s, but because it’s Jonathan Richman, he still manages to write endlessly listenable love songs and songs about bees like no other artist can.

Jay Richford & Gary Stevan
Feelings

Generally held to be one of the best (and rarest) ever albums in the ‘library music’ genre, Jay Richford & Gary Stevan’s beloved Feelings makes a reappearance on vinyl, this time on a double 7” single package. Spanning four tracks, the record explores everything from loose-limbed funk to orchestral-based jazz.

Mark E. Smith
The Post Nearly Man

Originally released in the summer of 1998, The Post Nearly Man was the first solo album from Mark E. Smith, and even by The Fall’s standards, it was experimental. Recorded in part at Pete Waterman’s studio (!), it was an inscrutable mixture of sound collages, samples of Fall tunes and Smith’s unique spoken-word artistry. Now, Demon Records re-issues this genuine curate’s egg of an album on clear 140g vinyl.

The Fall
The Twenty-Seven Points

Demon Records give the re-issue treatment to a sometimes overlooked and underappreciated part of The Fall’s back catalogue of the early Nineties. The Twenty-Seven Points, originally released in 1995, captures live performances between 1991 and 1995 in all their chaotic glory, including Mark E. Smith’s on-stage interactions.

The Fall
Middle Class Revolt

Middle Class Revolt was the Fall’s sixteenth (we think) studio album originally released in 1994. The previous years The Infotainment Scan was their highest charting album but it was back something to normal for this one. Not that Mark E. Smith would have been bothered as he and his band blast through another batch of unclassifiable racket. Reissue on Demon.

The Fall
The Infotainment Scan

The Infotainment Scan was the Fall's 15th album released in 1993. Coming after a period of success for the band, it was a typically eccentric effort containing two remarkable cover versions in Sister Sledge's Lost in Music and Steve Bent's I'm Going to Spain.  Elsewhere it was business as usual as The Fall continued to blend electronic sounds into their glam racket but despite all the oddness this ended up as their highest charting album.

Randy Holden
Population II

Population II is a 1969 solo debut from Randy Holden of Blue Cheer that has been cited as one of the earliest examples of doom-metal. He used sixteen amps to create an album of leaden dirges and heavy riffs using the sounds and rhythms from machines to give the album its mechanical heart. Out of print for decades this is ripe for rediscovery particularly for fans of the likes of Sunn 0))) and other modern day practitioners of the genre.

Ice
The Ice Age

Never even released upon its completion, the RidingEasy label’s Brown Acid series uncovers The Ice Age, the debut album from Indianapolis band Ice. A mixture of ultra-heavy psychedelia and primitive proto-metal that nevertheless boasts prominent melodic hooks, the group split up almost immediately after finishing work on it in 1970. It could have been a canonical rock classic if it had seen the light of the day back then.

Tubelord
Our First American Friends / Tezcatlipoca

You may remember Tubelord from their 2006 onwards mix of math and indie rock that blazed across venues back when we still could sweat in public without it being a public health hazard. They didn't quite break through but lots of folk remember them fondly so here is a vinyl pressing of 2009  album plus the Tezcatlipoca EP (try asking for that one at the merch counter when drunk).

Juliette & The Licks
...Like A Bolt Of Lightning

Juliette and the Licks are led by Hollywood actress Juliette Lewis. ...Like A Bolt of Lightning was the band’s debut EP, originally released towards the end of 2004. We Are The Ocean
Cutting Our Teeth

Cutting Our Teeth is the debut album by Essex rock four-piece We Are The Ocean. It was originally released in 2010. In Alfie Scully, they had a guitarist so young his parents had to sign his recording contract on his behalf. The energetic screaming vocals from Dan Brown were tempered by the melodic vocals of Liam Cromby. Their sound ran full gamut of rock from in your face energy to slow and brooding introspection. They split in 2017.

Nina Simone
The Best Studio & Live Recordings

Nina Simone was a genuinely groundbreaking artist. A musician, composer and arranger with great skill and an expressive voice that told of her woes as she sang her songs. As great creative people often are, Nina Simone was tightly wound and prone to explosive fits of rage, but this only made her music all the more passionate. The Best Studio & Live Recordings is just that, split over a double LP.

Kate Nash
Made Of Bricks

Come on admit it. You've been counting down the days until the 10th anniversary of Kate Nash's debut 'Made of Bricks'. Now known more for being an activist and political mouth piece this harks back to the time she made actual music. She was dead sassy back then - a bit like a perky and tuneful Janet Street Porter.

Fairuz
Maarifti Feek

The reissue of the rare 1987 album Maarifti Feek by Lebanese diva Fairuz follows WEWANTSOUNDS reissue of the 1979 classic Wahdon in 2019 which gave the label a thirst for Lebanese music. Ziad Rahbani composed and orchestrated the album in his own inimitable jazz / funk way. It includes the track Overture 83.

Fleetwood Mac
Tusk

Listen will you...seriously. Tusk is one of the greatest albums ever made. It was the much anticipated follow up to the zillion selling Rumours and was the moment that Fleetwood Mac decided it would be time for the over long double LP. But it kind of needs to be long for all the moods and emotions it attempts to get through. From gorgeous soft rock ballads to Lindsey Buckingham's off the wall power pop, Tusk has everything...including marching bands and most importantly a dog on the sleeve.

Originally released in 1997 as their second EP, Matador are re-issuing Soft Effects by veteran indie-rockers Spoon. It was also available as part of the Telephono album later in 2006, but this is the first time that the five-track EP will be re-issued on vinyl. Newly re-cut from the original master tapes, it’s a part of the label’s Slay On Cue series that’ll see them make available the band’s first eight releases on vinyl and CD, some of them for the first time.

The Pretty Things
S. F. Sorrow

The Pretty Things were innovators in the ‘60s and ‘70s and in 1968 they unleashed their classic and essential rock opera and psychedelic masterpiece, S.F. Sorrow. This was well in advance of The Who having such fanciful ideas with Tommy. Think of it as standing shoulder-to-shoulder with The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper or Pink Floyd’s Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.

The Blue Nile
High

The Blue Nile have a famously sparse back catalogue, releasing just four albums in their 36 year career. They definitely believe the quality, not quantity trope. It turns out that there was some unreleased stuff knocking around, though. The reissue of their fourth and final album to date, 2004’s High, comes with an extra 32 minutes of music on the 2CD version. It is also being released on vinyl for the first time in its original 9 track form.

Pearl Jam
Ten

Pearl Jam’s debut album Ten remains a serious landmark in alternative rock, playing an important part in determining the direction of popular rock music in the 90’s. Its also considered one of the band’s very best records, so what's not to like? Ten has sold millions of copies to date, but this reissue by We Are Vinyl keeps vinyl copies of the album nice and available for fans.

King Crimson
Rarities (remix)

A vinyl box set of remixed King Crimson albums was released in 2018. In that box was a double LP of rarities compiled by Robert Fripp. They called it....wait for it....Rarities. The albums that featured are all being released individually and that includes this set, which will no doubt delight those who missed out on the box.

King Crimson
Islands (remix)

King Crimson’s fourth album, Islands, was originally released in 1971. It was the last to feature founding member and lyricist Pete Sinfield. When a Robert Fripp / Steven Wilson remix version of the album was released on CD and DVD-A in 2010, fans began to clamour for a vinyl version, a vinyl box set appeared in 2018. Now it's being re;leased as a stand alone album.

The Modern Lovers
Rock 'N' Roll With The Modern Lovers

Containing the hit cover version of ‘Egyptian Reggae’ that gave them a Top Five hit in the UK, Rock ‘N’ Roll With The Modern Lovers was the second LP released by Jonathan Richman’s band under the moniker Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers, and contains virtually everything you need to know about this cult figure’s aesthetic.

The Upsetters / Dave Barker & The Upsetters
Popcorn / Tight Spot

We noticed last week that The Upsetters Eastwood Rides Again was getting a re-issue and alongside that now comes this pair of classics extracted from the album and pressed onto super loud 7". Neither track has been issued on 7" before and both are prime examples of the dancefloor-ready uptempo dub that the Upsetters were known for. Classic stuff.

Elvis Costello
Brutal Youth

'Brutal Youth' was a 1994 album by a certain Elvis Costello. It was also the first music that he recorded with his band The Attractions since the 'Blood and Chocolate' LP they'd done together way back in 1986. Now regarded as one of his best albums - certainly one of his best in the 1990s at any rate - 'Brutal Youth' now comes re-issued courtesy of Music On Vinyl.

Jónsi
Go

Jonsi is the one from Sigur Ros and Go was his first solo album originally released in 2010. The album is notable for having string arrangements from Nico Muhly and being more acoustic and song-based than the rather grandiose Sigur Ros material. Ten years after the event it gets a red vinyl re-issue on Krunk to tie in with his new album Shiver.

Bloc Party
Silent Alarm

It's hard to recall sometimes given their recent, flailing output but Bloc Party were quite the incendiary band back in the day. Their debut Silent Alarm showcased their tight, energetic sound which married propulsive indie-rock to danceable rhythms. A large slab of credit must go to drummer Matt Tong whose rampant playing propelled the songs along at breakneck speed. They never quite hit these dizzy heights again so if you only buy one Bloc Party LP make it this one.

Captain Sky
Pop Goes The Captain

Commercially, the reception to Captain Sky’s music was lukewarm. Other artists, however, have found him to be a rich source for samples with all sorts of rap and hip-hop acts from Public Enemy to De La Soul sampling his work. Pop Goes Captain Sky was his second album of Afro Funk grooves and was originally released in 1979.

He is highly regarded alongside the likes of George Clinton and Bootsy Collins for his Afro Funk stylings. His 12 minute epic 'Super Sporm' has been sampled by greats such as Public Enemy, Wu Tang Clan, Boogie Down Productions and De La Soul, to name but a few. Also, Captain Sky is a totally cool name.

Tubby Hayes
The Fontana Albums (1961-1969)

Tubby Hayes was an English jazz saxophonist and band leader. In his time he played with club-owning saxophonist Ronnie Scott and scottish trumpeter Jimmy Deuchar. He recorded with Fontana from the early sixties until shortly before his death in 1973. The Fontana Albums (1961-1969) is a numbered limited edition 11 LP box set pressed on 180g vinyl with original artwork (except LP 2),

David Sylvian
Brilliant Trees

Brilliant Trees was the debut album from David Sylvian following the dissolution of his band Japan. Now re-issued on 180g vinyl.

Inner City Review

Inner City Review highlights the background work of influential musician, producer and label owner George Semper. It was unearthed by Giles Peterson and is released on his Arc Records label. The record features the George Semper Orchestra, musicians who backed astonishing vocalist Merry Clayton. Among their number is drummer Ollie Brown who played with The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and Minnie Ripperton. A rare and fabulous collection that features the likes of Jimmy Hayes, Lewis Flournoy and The Love Affair & Troy Raglin.

Johnny Cash
Easy Rider: The Best Of The Mercury Recordings

The period that bridged the gap between Johnny Cash’s time on Columbia Records and his classic stint on American Recordings was spent on Mercury Records. The six albums he released in this time included a collaboration with his old pals from Sun Records, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins and the song The Wanderer, which was recorded with U2. The highlights of this period from the mid-80s to the early ‘90s are collected together on Easy Rider: The Best Of The Mercury Recordings. Also includes the hit Get Rhythm.

The Rolling Stones
Voodoo Lounge

Voodoo Lounge was the first Rolling Stones album to be made without Bill Wyman who had left the previous year. The band continued on as a four piece drafting Don Was in on production duties. The producer tried to get them to go back to basics  - sometimes this was too basic for some listeners but the album was a relative success. It has now been re-issued on 2LP cut at half speed for that perfect sound recreation.

The Rolling Stones
Tattoo You

Tattoo You by The Rolling Stones was originally released in 1981. I think the consensus was that the Stones had gone off the boil by this point, but I beg to differ. It includes classic opening track Start Me Up and Waiting On A Friend which was a song originally written in the early ‘70s. Hang Fire and Tops are among the other highlights.

The Rolling Stones
Black and Blue

Black and Blue by The Rolling Stones was originally released in 1976. It was the first album to feature Ronnie Wood on guitar following the departure of Mick Taylor. Here we have a half-speed remastered reissue on heavyweight vinyl. It includes the single Fool To Cry, but the real winner on this album is the super Stones-y Hand of Fate.

The Rolling Stones
Dirty Work

Despite Mick Jagger and Keith Richards still not getting on too well, The Rolling Stones decided to make a second album where the tension in the studio would reach boiling point. Mick was fresh from his 1985 solo album, She’s The Boss and his collaboration with David Bowie, Dancing In The Street. Dirty Work, originally released in 1986, was the result. Commercially, they did pretty well with the single, a cover of Bob & Earl’s Harlem Shuffle.

Steel Wheels

Despite being very unfashionable in 1989, The Rolling Stones ploughed on regardless and made Steel Wheels. In fact, this album was a return to form, mainly because Mick and Keith were friends again and saw the band embark on a massive world tour. It was the last album to feature original bassist Bill Wyman. Includes Mixed Emotions, Almost Hear You Sigh and A Rock And A Hard Place.

The Rolling Stones
Emotional Rescue

1980’s Emotional Rescue saw The Rolling Stones mopping up some disco sounds which they first tried out on the 1978 single Miss You. The real winner of the bunch in the punchy, funky title track, which, if you’ve seen the 2015 film A Bigger Splash, gets Ralph Fiennes dancing like a...er...dad?

The Rolling Stones
It’s Only Rock 'N’ Roll

It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll by The Rolling Stones was originally released in 1974. It was the last album that guitarist Mick Taylor played on, after seeing the band through a run of real classics. Highlights here include the eponymous single and their cover of The Temptations' Ain’t To Proud To Beg.

The Rolling Stones
Bridges to Babylon

The Rolling Stones have released a lot of records. A lot. In 1997 they unleashed Bridges to Babylon which is one of those records elderly artists release where they bring in the hip producers of the day. 1997 meant Don Was and the Dust Brothers were involved who helped expand the 'Stones sound from there barroom blues rock out towards sample-laden hip-hop. Cue Jagger with baseball cap on backwards.

Kevin Rowland
My Beauty

Heavily (and quite harshly) derided upon its release in 1999, reportedly selling fewer than 100 copies, former Dexys Midnight Runners frontman Kevin Rowland essentially torpedoed his solo career with My Beauty, an album of intriguing covers with certain lyrics re-written by Rowland to reflect his battles with substance abuse. It now gets a limited edition re-issue on pink vinyl.

The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble
From The Stairwell

The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble are a Dutch ensemble who peddled this particular ware in 2011. They tied their work to films and visual projects creating a kind of update on the sort of soundtracks that were popular in the 1960s. Their sound is dark and intense and could be compared to the works of the similarly noir Bohren und der Club of Gore. 2LP re-issue on Denovali.

Pacific Breeze: Japanese City Pop, AOR & Boogie 1976-1986

Japanese City Pop, AOR & Boogie 1976-1986 presents some of the best and artists from the period - Haruomi Hosono, Taeko Ohnuki and Minako Yoshida all feature. Redd Kross
Red Cross

A document of their meteoric ascendancy in the SoCal punk scene, Redd Kross’s 1980 debut EP gets an expanded 40th anniversary re-issue. A then-self-titled effort, Red Cross was a six-track effort that lasted under seven minutes but made a huge impact. It now gets repackaged with five extra contemporaneous tracks.

Théâtre du Chêne Noir
Miss Madona

Following the release of the Aurora album in 1971, the Avignon-based Théâtre du Chêne Noir put on another stage show titled Miss Madona, and released three audio extracts from the performance as a 7” single. Now re-issued on Souffle Continu, the music here is a fantastic insight into the company’s skills both as actors and musicians.

Théâtre du Chêne Noir
Aurora

A re-issue of the first album recording from the Théâtre du Chêne Noir from 1971, the residents of the theatre of the same name in the French city of Avignon and run by mercurial Gérard Gelas. Aurora was adapted from the eponymous stage production, a fusing of prose and music telling the story of children defending Earth from a bird-like alien species.

John Coltrane
Giant Steps (Mono)

If you've watched the 2016 documentary Chasing Trane you are going to be wanting to pick up the back catalogue of its subject jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. Giant Steps was his fifth album and has since become a template for jazz musicians to use when learning to play and the album contains several songs that have gone on to become standards such as the title track and Naima.

Brainiac
Electro Shock For President

Not to be confused with Sky's program which fused silliness and science, y'know the one that your teacher put it on if they couldn't be bothered with a proper lesson? Must just be my age group then. Anyway, this is the Ohio post-hardcore groups who wrote a few noisy, angular tunes back in the 90s. Brainiac's 'Electro Shock For President' is their 1997 excursion into the synthy punk that Suicide pioneered back in the day.

Pole
1

1 is (naturally) the first album from electronic musician Pole (aka Stefan Betke). His music has slowly but surely gained traction over the years and has become essential listening to fans of the glitch and dub techno genres. A box set came out earlier this year but now is your chance to get the albums individually.

Pole
2

Reflecting the minimalism of his compositions German glitch and dub techno expert Pole (aka Stefan Betke) titled his first three albums 1,2 and 3. 2 was released in 1999 and contains six long form tracks of precise electronica with perhaps a little more dub influence than his debut. Still, Betke kept away from the pounding drums and bass normally found in dub influenced music and instead created his own path of tightly controlled minimalist sound construction.

Embryo
Embryo's Rache

Embryo were a German band active in the early 1970s who made a form of ethic influenced world music (see sleeve art for proof) which pushed the blueprint for 'free' music. It's a sprawling jazz-rock exploration with jams that explored Eastern blues and free jazz. This 1971 album has been in and out of print for years but now gets a very limited edition re-issue on random coloured vinyl courtesy of Loneos.
