SWANS
The Great Annihilator

The Great Annihilator was Swans ninth studio album originally released in 1995. It is as intense as you might expect  - leader Michael Gira lived in a tent next to the studio for the entire three month creation of the record and the results were as majestic and haunting as anything in their catalogue. It was one of the harder Swans records to find in the racks, a situation rectified by Mute's decision to re-press it in 2017 alongside a download of Gira's solo Drainland.

Lightning Bolt
Ride The Skies

Originally released in 2001, Ride The Skies was the second studio album from Lightning Bolt, who, 19 years later, are beloved veterans of the noise-rock scene. It’s now getting a well-deserved re-release, complete with original artwork from the band’s Brian Chippendale and available on ‘baby blue sky’-coloured vinyl.

Low & Spring Heel Jack
Bombscare EP

Originally released in 2000 on the tiny indie Tugboat, Bombscare rather went under the radar, seeing American slowcore legends Low collaborate on four tracks with British electronic duo Spring Heel Jack. It saw the Minnesotan band at the apex of their powers, between two Steve Albini-produced classics, and Spring Heel Jack in the ascendancy just before their excellent album Masses. Now, it gets re-issued by Treader on 12” EP.

Tom Waits
Glitter and Doom Live

Here is a collection of highlights from Tom Waits’ 2008 extremely well-received tour Glitter And Doom, which seems to be the last time he gifted the world with a full tour. The live album is presented in two parts, with disc one the ‘straight’ (relatively speaking) live album and disc two made up of ‘Tom Tales’, e.g. strange spoken musings by the great mystery man. Essential part of the big Waits puzzle.

Ghost World (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Without Blueshammer there'd be no Kings of Leon. It is as simple as that. The authentic blues band are the biggest name on this soundtrack of the fabulous film Ghost World. You also get a bit of Skip James, some seventy year old calypso recordings and rare blues dredged up from old 78rpm records but nothing in the world of blues-rock can compare to the mighty Blueshammer.

Tangerine Dream
Destination Berlin

The title reflecting the thoughts of a million electronic music producers. In fact Destination Berlin was the 1989 album from synth legends Tangerine Dream and a soundtrack to the movie of the same name. It is a rare sight of the upbeat poppy side of Tangerine Dream featuring jaunty sunny side up vignettes. Not a doom laden chord in sight. Transparent blue vinyl re-issue on Music On Vinyl.

Sun Kil Moon
Ghosts Of The Great Highway

Out of print for far too long, Ghosts of the Great Highway is a timely reminder of the power and emotion Mark Kozelek's music once had. This was his first 'group' record post Red House Painters and is seen as one of his best. With a band featuring Anthony Koutsos (Red House Painters), Tim Mooney (American Music Club), the album fine tunes Kozelek's previous poetic sadcore with a healthy dose of Americana. Vinyl reissue contains original bonus track 'Gentle Moon'.

Prefab Sprout
Protest Songs

Protest Songs was the fourth album by County Durham’s pop royalty, Prefab Sprout. It was originally released in 1989 as the follow-up to their hit-filled classic, From Langley Park To Memphis and predecessor to Jordan: The Comeback. It was, however, recorded in 1985 shortly after the band’s second album, Steve McQueen, which is why, artistically, it has more in common with that than the albums either side of it. Nevertheless it is classic piece of the Prefab Sprout discography.

Norman Feels
Where Or When

The gloriously named Norman Feels was an underground soul singer from the 1970s releasing a couple of albums on Just Sunshine  - the label that brought you Karen Dalton and Betty Davis. Where or When was released in 1974 and was slightly more accessible than his previous self titled debut and showcases perfectly his warm voice and trademark jazzy arrangements. Not to be missed.

Disco Zombies
South London Stinks

Seriously I can't argue with that and back in 1977 it probably stank even worse. Luckily Disco Zombies lives far away enough in Leicester to not be affected by the stench. They were a chirpy, upbeat post-punk five piece with a storied history and songs called things like Top of the Pops and Punk a-go-go. One of them ended up discovering Blur. This double album collects all their best bits proving that if you made music between the years of 1977 and 1982 - wait long enough and someone will give it the deluxe re-issue package.

Motörhead

To some ‘The Game’ is now the definitive Motörhead anthem, but no-one can deny the awesome majesty of the ‘Ace Of Spades’ title-track. This edition comes with a bonus book and live album.

Joni Mitchell
Early Joni – 1963

Early Joni - 1963 is an album of Joni Mitchell’s earliest known recordings from a session at a radio station in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, her hometown. Joni Mitchell was just 19 at the time, so it serves as a valuable document of a nascent talent who became one of the world’s greatest songwriters. Joni Mitchell
Live at Canterbury House – 1967

If you ever hear David Crosby tell a story about Joni Mitchell, he’ll always recall the time he took her to a party where she completely silenced the room with a few of her songs. Live at Canterbury House 1967 is a 3 LP, recorded before the release of her debut album in 1968, that will give you the chance to experience that feeling.

John Carpenter
Halloween - 40th Anniversary Edition

The worlds of film and music are hell-bent on squeezing every last drop of juice from the reboot of John Carpenter’s Halloween. This one here is not to be confused with a soundtrack album for the 40th anniversary movie - it is, in fact, the 40th anniversary edition of the ORIGINAL 1978 score. Apparently the first official release of this soundtrack was a remixed version, so for this new edition Carpenter’s partner-in-crime Alan Howarth has faithfully copied over the film's audio tracks in the same order in which they appear on-screen.

The Breeders
Pod

Pod was so refreshing when it came out in 1990. For those of us who loved Kim Deal's contributions to the Pixies this was a whole album of the stuff and waaay superior to Pixies lacklustre Bossanova of the same year. Pod was more leftfield, more spindly and taut than anything they did later and if it sounds a bit like Slint at times, that's because the drummer is Britt Walford.

Yo La Tengo
And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out

Reissue of Yo La Tengo’s ninth studio LP here courtesy of Matador. 2000’s And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out remains one of the band’s strongest performances this Century. It marked a change in Yo La Tengo's style, with many of the songs here generally slower and more contemplative than on previous releases. The dreamy haze that blankets tracks like ‘Our Way To Fall’ is almost Lynchian. Come the end of the 2000’s And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out showed up on several ‘Best Of The Decade’ lists.

Aesop Rock
Labor Days

It's official, Aesop Rock is the wordiest rapper of all-time. 'Labor Days' is his breakthrough album, seeing a great deal of underground success and acclaim. His beats are often in the vein of experimental hip hop producers like El-P (Cannibal Ox, Run The Jewels, Company Flow), Blockhead and DJ Shadow whilst his lyrics are knotty and often intangible. Alongside 'The Impossible Kid', this is the best place to start with Rock. Check out the track 'Daylight' and you'll get the idea of what this LP is about.

Robert Wyatt
His Greatest Misses

His Greatest Misses is, as you might expect, atypically  idiosyncratic collection from Robert Wyatt. It trawls his albums from Rock Bottom (1974) to Cuckooland (2003) for some of his forgotten gems as well as actual hits in the likes of I am a Believer and Shipbuilding. This is a new edition on Domino of this one time Japan only collection.

Saint Etienne
Sound Of Water

Still standing as Saint Etienne’s most unknowable and understated album, Sound Of Water gets a re-issue on vinyl. Originally released in 2000 and spearheaded by a nine-minute single in ‘How We Used To Live’, it was a stripped-back, ambient record with traces of trip-hop in the mix.

Burial
Untrue

By the time Burial's second album surfaced, his reputation had grown to underground stardom, even if his identity was still a secret. Throbbing Gristle
20 Jazz Funk Greats

For all their reputation as “wreckers of civilisation”, by 1979 the original industrial quartet had gotten some of the confrontation out of their system and were exploring a wider range of expression. Chris and Cosey were getting more into their electronics, evident on the pure electropop of Hot on the Heels of Love and Walkabout’s jolly sequenced synth. Of course, it wouldn’t be TG if it was all “very friendly”, so Persuasion and Six Six Sixties see Genesis P-Orridge letting in various shades of creepiness. Peter Christopherson must be responsible for some of the sleaziness too, of course. Double CD reissue, with a disc’s worth of live tracks from 1979.

Sleaford Mods
Austerity Dogs

Austerity Dogs is the 6th album by Nottingham duo Sleaford Mods, but it’s the one that got them noticed. Since its release in 2013, the band have gone from strength to strength, being a necessary mouthpiece and cathartic outlet for many in the these austere times. They mix a punk snarl with pepped-up hip-hop beats and socially aware lyrics to make an original, energetic, angry and often witty statement that has become essential.

Sleaford Mods

Divide And Exit by Sleaford Mods is the follow-up to their breakthrough compilation album, Austerity Dogs. Includes the single, Tiswas.

The Fall
Perverted By Language

Perverted By Language was the Fall's sixth album and the first to feature Brix Smith in any capacity. Mark E Smith's former wife was instrumental in the later smoothing out of their post-punk clank but at this stage it is still a challenging listen. There's plenty of classic the Fall moments here though from legendary longform opener Eat Y'self Fitter to the magnificently taut guitar entanglements of I Feel Voxish.

John Hiatt
The Tiki Bar Is Open

New West re-issues four studio albums from American singer-songwriter John Hiatt as stand-alone LPs for the first time, including 2001’s ‘The Tiki Bar Is Open’. Perma-hatted country pioneer Dwight Yoakam is getting some of his early 2000s era records remastered for vinyl one of which is Dwight's Used Records. Remarkably the set stands up as a coherent release showcasing the rootsy sound that is at the heart of all he does.

Negro Folklore From Texas State Prisons

'Negro Folklore From Texas Prisons' is a collection of worksongs, spirituals, blues and recited poems known as ‘toasts’ recorded by American folklorist Bruce Jackson. The songs were recorded in 1964 in prisons Jackson visited. The range of songs he collected make this collection a must for any music historians, whether it be your job or just your hobby.

Anthony Moore
Out

An album of skewed folk-rock cleaving to unusual time signatures, ‘Out’ is a solo album from British experimental composer (and former Henry Cow / Slapp Happy member) Anthony Moore. With its planned release for 1976 on Virgin cancelled, ‘Out’ only belatedly received a CD release in the early Nineties, and is now presented on vinyl in its original intended form for the first time.

Electric Children

Formed by Mudhoney’s Mark Arm and Steve Turner, The Monkeywrench were an often overlooked gem in the Seattle scene’s crown. Their second studio album, 1999’s ‘Electric Children’, displayed the full extent of their power, rawer yet more controlled than their debut eight years previously. Remastered by the record’s original producer Jack Endino, it now gets a re-issue on vinyl.

Howe Gelb & A Band Of Gypsies
Alegrias

Howe Gelb is of course the man from Giant Sand who as also had a long and circuitous solo career. Ten years ago came Alegrias where he hooked up with the flamenco band Band of Gypsies on an album that blends his sun scorched desert rock with flamenco beats. The result was one of his best albums which now comes re-issued with a poster, postcards and bonus tracks.

Der Plan
Die Peitsche des Lebens

Recorded at a point at which Der Plan was becoming more a side-project for Moritz Reichelt Kai Horn and Frank Fenstermacher, 1989’s ‘Die Peitsche Des Lebens’ was the trio’s final album before the Neue Deutsche Welle pioneers’ split in the early Nineties, and considerably less successful than many of its predecessors despite its merits.

Der Plan
Es Ist Eine Fremde Und Seltsame Welt

Translated as “it is a strange world” - referring to a quote from David Lynch’s ‘Blue Velvet’ - ‘Es Ist Eine Fremde Und Seltsame Welt’ was released by Neue Deutsche Welle pioneers Der Plan in 1987. Composed almost entirely in one infamous session and making use of an array of unusual time signatures, it now gets a re-issue via Bureau B.

Kevin Rowland
My Beauty

Heavily (and quite harshly) derided upon its release in 1999, reportedly selling fewer than 100 copies, former Dexys Midnight Runners frontman Kevin Rowland essentially torpedoed his solo career with My Beauty, an album of intriguing covers with certain lyrics re-written by Rowland to reflect his battles with substance abuse. It now gets a limited edition re-issue on pink vinyl.

Scottish musician Chris Thompson uses the name The Bathers to make a sweet brand of chamber-pop that has made him a bit of national treasure in his homeland. 'Kelvingrove Baby', the third Bathers album, originally came out in 1997 and runs with the sophisti-pop style of its two predecessors. The record features Thompson's pal, James Grant of Love & Money, on guitar and backing vocals. 'Kelvingrove Baby' is reissued via Marina (Der Plan, Josef K).

The Bathers
Sunpowder

'Sunpowder' is the second LP by The Bathers and is the chamber-pop project of Scottish musician Chris Thompson. Originally released in 1995, 'Sunpowder' follows the lead of other Bathers albums by taking inspiration from a bunch of classic songwriters - Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie etc. Featuring the vocals of the Cocteau Twins’ Liz Fraser on two tracks, this 'Sunpowder' reissue is out via Marina.

The Bathers
Lagoon Blues

The Bathers is the name that Scottish musician Chris Thompson gives to his chamber-pop project. He takes his inspiration from the likes of Van Morrison, Tom Waits, David Bowie, Tim Hardin and Leonard Cohen. 'Lagoon Blues' was the Bathers first album, originally released in 1993. Features Isobel Campbell on cello and comes reissued on Marina Records.

Baroness
Yellow & Green

Big heavy hard-rock rifftastic action from Baroness here: a whole 18 tracks, spread over 2 LPs. Yellow & Green has it all: arena dynamics, pseudo-mythical sleeve art, bellowed vocals and pyrotechnic guitars. This was the group’s third album, initially released in 2012 on Relapse and now reissued by the same label.

Baroness
Red Album

The debut LP from Savannah, Georgia's Baroness sent shockwaves through the extreme metal community upon its release in 2007. A stunning blend of gruff sludge-metal riffing and progressive rock, the group eschewed the belligerent, repetitive riffery of most groups in the sub-genre to offer a technical and psychedelic record. The guitar leads are buttery and smooth, the vocals are powerful and grizzly, the drumming is smart and intricate - fans of Mastodon, Kylesa, Red Fang, Torche and High On Fire will love 'Red Album'.

Baroness
Blue Record

Continuing the theme of incredible sleeve illustrations from frontman John Dyer Baizley - and also that of naming their albums after a colour - 'Blue Record', the second LP from progressive metallers Baroness, picked up where 'Red Album' left off. It's a slightly more melodic affair than 'Red', with Baroness tightening up their sound and increasing the duel riffing and use of soaring vocals. It features many fan-favourite singles which they often play live - 'Jake Leg', 'A Horse Called Golgotha', 'The Gnashing' and 'The Sweetest Curse'. An essential sludge-/post-/prog-metal record.

Fairuz
Maarifti Feek

The reissue of the rare 1987 album Maarifti Feek by Lebanese diva Fairuz follows WEWANTSOUNDS reissue of the 1979 classic Wahdon in 2019 which gave the label a thirst for Lebanese music. Ziad Rahbani composed and orchestrated the album in his own inimitable jazz / funk way. It includes the track Overture 83.

Various
(The Microcosm): Visionary Music of Continental Europe, 1970-1986

Acting as a sequel to Light in the Attic’s I Am The Center, The Microcosm delves further into experimental new age electronic compositions from the 70s and 80s. Mapping a peaceful yet strange world between prog, psych and ambient electronica. With pieces from Vangelis, Roedelius, Ash Ra Tempel, Popol Vuh, Bernard Xolotl, Robert Julian Horky and Enno Velthuys.

Mark E. Smith
The Post Nearly Man

Originally released in the summer of 1998, The Post Nearly Man was the first solo album from Mark E. Smith, and even by The Fall’s standards, it was experimental. Recorded in part at Pete Waterman’s studio (!), it was an inscrutable mixture of sound collages, samples of Fall tunes and Smith’s unique spoken-word artistry. Now, Demon Records re-issues this genuine curate’s egg of an album on clear 140g vinyl.

The Antlers
Hospice

O.M.G. it's the 10th anniversary of The Antlers 'Hospice' so literally put everything that you are doing down and re-buy the album that Pitchfork gave a whopping 8.5 out of 10 to in 2008. Re-live its swooning and emotional mid-paced indie, glacial atmospheric synth work, heartfelt trumpets and random noise bursts. It's just like Arcade Fire were a shoegaze band.

Merzbow
Pulse Demon

Relapse presents a re-mastered version of Pulse Demon, one of Japanese noise artist Masami Akita’s most noteworthy records under his Merzbow alias. Originally released in 1996, the album was composed entirely with a fuzz box and the generation of musique concrete, without any studio trickery or manipulation. It now comes with a bonus track, ‘Extract 1’.

Boris
Absolutego

The debut 'single' from Boris though we use single in the loosest sense of the world as one of the tracks is 60 (sixty) minutes long.  I'm not exactly sure how they've squeezed this on vinyl but if anyone can then Jack at Third Man can. Droney post metal of the highest order that captures the band at their most intense. Now re-issued and remastered onto two LPs.

Boris
Amplifier Worship

Although they should probably at some point rename themselves as their moniker is increasingly tarnished (especially here in the UK), Boris are one of the finest proponents of heavy music. This is their 1998 debut album which is possibly as intense as they got  - ear crushing music that draws favourable comparisons with Melvins. Remastered black vinyl edition on Third Man.

Super Furry Animals
Fuzzy Logic

Super Furry Animals released their lively wild-ride album Fuzzy Logic in 1996, throwing some Welsh weirdness into the Britpop mix. This twentieth anniversary reissue includes the remastered album plus a round-up of all the contemporary B-sides. Also (for the CD edition) a second disc, containing a sackful of previously unreleased material.

Talking Heads
Fear of Music

Nowadays 1979’s ‘Fear Of Music’ is largely remembered as the Talking Heads album with ‘Life During Wartime’ and ‘Heaven’ on it -  probably something to do with the fact that they are the only two songs from the record that made it into 1984’s ‘Stop Making Sense’ (though ‘Cities’ was included in the extended version of the film). This legacy does ‘Fear Of Music’ a great disservice - sure, those are both absolutely top tracks, but the whole album really is a triumph of the airless agit-funk style that the group had lasered in on throughout 1977’s ‘77’ and 1978’s ‘More Songs About Buildings And Food’. It also bridged the gap between those LPs and the transcendent polyrhythms of 1980's ‘Remain In Light’. This is Talking Heads at their most frantic, paranoid and couched, an effect heightened by Brian Eno’s daring production. The frenzied ecstasies of ‘I Zimbra’, ‘Animals’, ‘Memories Can't Wait’ etc. are pretty much unparalleled in the post-punk era.

Talk Talk
Spirit Of Eden

Fashioned from innumerable improv sessions, 1988’s Spirit of Eden is where Talk Talk took an experimental turn and, in so doing, secured the legacy that lives on in bands such as Zelienople. Sprawled-out and unhurried song structures, a smattering of strange sound design, a wide instrumental palette, plenty of dynamics and space, Mark Hollis’ soulful and plaintive moans… come on, it’s a masterpiece.

Talking Heads
More Songs About Buildings And Food

More Songs About Buildings And Food was the second Talking Heads album, originally released in 1978 and the first to feature Brian Eno in the production chair. Eno was a perfect fit for Talking Heads, teasing out of them a more dance and funk inspired sound with the rhythm section of Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth taking a keener role behind David Byrne's trademark yelp.

Talk Talk
The Party’s Over

It still beggars belief that this record was made by the same people who made 'Laughing Stock'.  This is Talk Talk in full throes of their early 'new romantic' sound. Having supported Duran Duran there is a certain similarity in sound but even when in synth pop excess mode Talk Talk were clever and literate. Witness the hit singles 'Today' and 'Talk Talk'.

John Carpenter & Alan Howarth
Halloween II

It's getting to the point where it feels like every other LP in the Norman stockroom is some sort of John Carpenter reissue - surely a testament to the enduring appeal of the work of the legendary film director/composer. 1981’s ‘Halloween II’ saw Carpenter linking up with Alan Haworth to rehash the music of the hugely successful first ‘Halloween’ film for its follow-up. You know the drill by now - spooky synths, ominous bass, off-kilter melodies that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, that sort of hting. This new Death Waltz edition (when is a John Carpenter release not the death Waltz edition these days?) contains new artwork by John Mann.

Nick Drake
Five Leaves Left

Five Leaves Left was Nick Drake's debut LP on Island and probably counts as one of the most autumnal records ever made. It's understated and hushed take on folk music was not a hit at the time but slowly over the years it found an audience of like minded sensitive souls. Notable for Robert Kirby's brilliant string arrangements, this is a gorgeous work not to be missed.

Sylvain Chauveau
Simple

Sylvain Chauveau is French but lives in Brussels. He's one of the slightly lesser known neo-classical composers and is often used as a footnote if folks talk about Max Richter or Nils Frahm. Here is the first ever vinyl pressing of his collection of work for film and rare and unreleased tracks. It is an essential document of a 'much praised but not as well known as he should be' composer.

The Fall
This Nation's Saving Grace

Beggar’s Banquet are launching the next phase of their Fall reissue campaign, hooray hooray! This Nation’s Saving Grace, an album by The Fall that almost everyone seems to agree is a classic slice of Fall: impressive, given how hard it is to get that fanbase to agree. Major level Fall, get involved.

Neu!
Neu! 2

Neu! 2, the second LP from German Krautrock maestros, Neu!, is continually hailed as a classic of both the Krautrock genre and frankly, of the album format. The group honed the sound they had cultivated on their debut LP through 11-minute crunchers like 'Für Immer'. With the band having run out of recording money, the B-side is a few different manipulations of their previous single - a shoestring budget but turned out quite well.

Pixies
Bossanova

'Bossanova' is the third proper full length album from indie outfit Pixies, the legendary band from Boston who made some great records back when I was a lad. To try and follow up the triple whammy of 'Come On Pilgrim', 'Surfer Rosa' and 'Doolittle' is quite a daunting and challenging task, but they managed to shape a great record which stands out with its sci-fi themes and surf rock guitars. Features 'Dig For Fire', 'Allison' and 'Velouria'.

Spectrum
Forever Alien

Thirty years later and it seems Space Age are still releasing Sonic Boom records purportedly against the artist's wishes. The latest is Spectrum's 1997 album Forever Alien which saw Mr Boom move away from guitar based compositions to a more electronics-heave palette pointing forward perhaps to his later work. The beef goes on between the pair but what can't be argued is that this is another essential part of the Sonic Boom story.

Pixies
Come On Pilgrim... It's Surfer Rosa

Well there's no doubt that these are two of The Most Important Indie Rock Records Of All Time. Both are absolutely exceptional, in particular 'Surfer Rosa' which pretty much turned everything I knew on its head in my teenage years. 30 years after the event we get this luxury box set of both records plus a live show from the era. No new demos or whatever, but tasty and very collectable nonetheless.

Spacemen 3

Literally everything is coming out of the woodwork for Record Store Day 2020 and what we have here is an album of outtakes from the Spacemen 3 live album 'Performance'. It was originally released as part of a mail order offer for their 1989 album Playing With Fire but has been out of print ever since. Now appears to be the right time for vinyl lovers to snap up the performances the band didn't want you to hear - for a while anyway.

Prefab Sprout
Steve McQueen (Picture Disc)

A limited edition picture disc version to mark the 35th anniversary of Steve McQueen, the second studio album from English sophisti-pop heroes Prefab Sprout. Released in 1985, it was highly acclaimed by critics who focussed on the beautiful production from Thomas Dolby and for Paddy McAloon’s incisive lyrics about the ups and downs of love.

Jeff Buckley
Grace

Despite a number of archival and live albums, Grace was the only full studio album released by Jeff Buckley. Still, high points of the singer-songwriter's celebrated but tragically short career - 'Last Goodbye', 'Hallelujah', 'Lover, You Should Have Come Over' - were part of the collection, and deservedly so.

African Head Charge
My Life In A Hole In The Ground

An exciting quartet of African Head Charge albums incoming from Adrian Sherwood’s On-U Sound. The group dabbled in deep dub and intense psychedelia, stretching pretty far out on occasion. My Life In A Hole In The Ground was their 1981 debut, a sort of response to Brian Eno and David Byrne’s My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts.

John Lennon
Gimme Some Truth.

Released across all formats and also in box-set editions, ‘Gimme Some Truth.’ marks what would have been the 80th birthday of John Lennon. Taken from his entire solo discography, including the posthumous ‘Milk And Honey’, the material here has been completely remastered from the original tapes, and shows off the thematic breadth and depth of Lennon’s timeless songwriting.

Mesias Maiguashca
