MAP Vs DJ Haus
X-Mod EP

Dixon Avenue Basement Jams celebrate their twenty-fifth release in fine style with a collaborative effort by Mak & Pasteman (aka MAP) and DJ Haus! The X-Mod EP contains three of the finest heavyweight boomers you’ll hear this year, rich with acidic synths, vintage drum machines and deep bassline activity. Hand-stamped 12” vinyl edition.

Suuns
Hold/Still Remixes

Suuns hand over their Hold / Still album to a brace of producers for this album-length collection of remixes. We’ve got ambient stretches from Beatrice Dillon and Lee Gamble, a psychy version from Dark Sky, a techno explosion from VIRL, and dance initiators from Redshape and Marvin & Guy.  It’s great to hear the slinky-sleek shapes of Suuns’ music pushed that bit further into electronic realms. Double LP on Secretly Canadian.

Stump Valley
...

Stump Valley claim to have moved all their studio gear out into the woods when they sat down to record this release. Although that feels a little doubtful (all those synths and drum machines sure sound connected to a power supply), the blissful unhurried tone of these Balearic-style recordings feels about right for such a context. … is out on Dopeness Galore.

The Spookfish
Black Hole

Instead of tackling external political or cultural phenomenons, The Spookfish is a candid documentation of a personal journey - representing inward emotions throughout. Dan Goldberg's impressive debut offering, Black Hole, is a creation moulded by the East Coast journeys of the creative New Yorker.

Rainbow Island
Crystal Smerluvio Riddims

Roman psychedelia here from Rainbow Island. Crystal Smerluvio Riddims isn’t just your usual psych-rock record though, as the group have decided to incorporate Riddims from elsewhere as well as some dub production touches. That makes the album a refreshingly different kind of space flight to the one you might have imagined. Co-released by NO=FI Recordings and Flying Kids Records.

SRAW
Beat Weeks

SRAW had released a track a day on the old MySpace platform for a week to eventually build a seven-track record entitled ‘Beat Weeks’. The record could easily slip into any hip-hop record shop, and could even hold a place in some chillwave or experimental stores! This release is available on Vinyl LP.

White Violet
Ages

White Violet’s process for this record involved a year-long process of writing pairs of songs, each pair consciously developing on the themes of the previous. The resulting album Ages ended up being about time and ageing and adulthood, with songs that manage these themes intimately and maturely. Released on vinyl by Normaltown Records.

Doubler
Alter-VU

A four-track release from Doubler on the appropriately-named Confuse House label. Alter VU does have the fundamentals of house music, but the edges are fuzzy and stranger things are going on, so that this can’t necessarily be called dancing music. Tasty quasi-ambient unhouse sounds. Alter VU is released in a limited edition of 200 12” copies.

Body Boys
H

Sounds recorded sometime in the past of the Body Boys’ recording career. H is the project’s first release on Civilised Life, and comes fully-loaded with five cuts of explorative electronics that toy around with a little bit of ambience (e.g. the title track and ‘Imprint’) as well as jumpy club steppers. 12” EP on Civilised Life with hand-stamped covers.

Inventive singer-songwriter Jonny Velon tunes into the sounds and styles of various classic 70’s cats on his new album Goodness Flows: Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Murray Head… They all mesh together into an accomplished album of cool rock music. Person Of Interest
Boost The Whip (I-95 Mix)

With his releases on L.I.E.S., Royal Oak and Russian Torrent, Person Of Interest is more than adept and holding us in the 90s and the golden ages of dance music, but Boost The Whip is huge chunky slab of nostalgia pressed onto a single side of wax. Everything you need to know about breaks based house is right here.

SMBD
Moon Theory

Three short new pieces from soulful producer SMBD, who here toys with spacey ambient and deep house styles with playful aplomb. Moon Theory is a single-sided 12” vinyl release, but SMBD squeezes in more than enough goodness to justify the pressing, especially with the attractively marbled design. On Apron.

Estrella is the debut EP from RBCHMBRS, whose music is thankfully catchier than their chosen artist name. Drum & Bass gets recalibrated and chopped up into refreshing new forms, proving that there’s joyous life in the old breaks yet! You are advised to listen to these three tracks at any turntable speed you damn please. 12” on the 1432 R label.

Two deep-pulsing grooves from Ion Ludwig (also releasing as Alter Mahnn). Drums

Ron Trent adds a second instalment to his planned Humans, Drums & Machines series, which gives this EP the utilitarian title of Drums. YPY
2020

YPY is the production project of Osaka artist Koshiro Hino, working with what I’m going to call electronic music, although that term doesn’t explain much of what is going on here. 2020 is full of drum machine rhythms and synth fragments, but the rhythms don’t necessarily move like you’d expect them to and the tracks are prone to collapsing into overwhelming density. Texture is the name of the game! Edition of 300 LPs on Where To Now?

Kalla
Enter The Sponk

Kalla is a new producer from Ireland, but his sound fits right into the hard-jackin’ dirty sound of Dixon Avenue Basement Jams. Enter The Sponk has four powerful tracks, each of which focus on those firm and funky low-end rhythm kicks that’ll override your mind. Edition of 300 12”s, each one hand-stamped.

SMBD
Messages 045 EP

Soulful producer SMBD presents three new tracks and one new remix of one of those new tracks by new artist World Air. The Messages 045 EP is a shiny-bright good time thing made for dancing and smiles, particularly in the case of the track ‘Ping Pong Love’, which features a distant echoed sample of what sounds like an Arthur Russell voice. 12” on Lo Recordings.

Mass Prod
Earquake

Italo-American producer Mass Prod has been cutting his teeth for a while across numerous labels, including ReSolute, Kontra-Musik, Cuttin’ Headz and Objazz. After releasing a mini album on cassette in 2013 he’s now back for a follow up full length. As experimental as it is funky he’ll jump from trashy house beats, to 2-step, to John Carpenter without flinching.

Fallbeil
The Healer

Fallbeil are a Hamburg crew who rock a really sharp combination of electro and acid: the squelches are severe and the percussion is fat. The Healer features two new Fallbeil cuts as well as a remix by Innyster that really cranks up the industrial flavours. Hard-hitting 12” on Mannequin, as part of their ‘Death Of The Machines’ series.

Watcher
Live at Third Man Records

Watcher are a Tennessee tangle of fury and energy and distortion, spitting their songs out at breakneck pace towards unsuspecting audiences. They are pretty new to the game, having self-released just a handful of cassettes so far, and this short-but-sweet 7” document of their set Live At Third Man Records is their most high-profile release so far. IVVVO
Light Moving

A muddy, expansive chunk of dancefloor techno from Portuguese IVVVO. Nots
Live at Third Man Records

Jack White continues to offer both gigs and releases to up and coming bands via his Third Man Records label and shop: good on him. Nots are the latest band to get White-aided opportunities, with this 7” document of their live set. They sound like a fierce and essential live act on this evidence, with a serious bite to their post-punk via no-wave sound.

Marcos Cabral
Buried Alive Twice

Under the Chemotex moniker, New Yorker, Marcos Cabral made some massive club sounds that recalled the days of Rush and Cajual. Under his given name, Cabral released the album L.I.E.S. in 2013 which went largely unnoticed but set him on a new roots-driven course. After and EP and some tracks appearing on compilations, Dancing On Manhattan which appeared on Ben UFO’s Essential Mix being the most notable, he has now recorded an full-length LP, Buried Alive Twice. It is an understated trip that will land you in a crazy cartoon world pulling and pushing you every which way, bringing you down and building you up. There’s a lot going on in these here grooves.

FAY
Deal

FAY combines a Holly Herndonesque approach to chopping and screwing her own voice with a drone-dub aesthetic and an avant approach to electronic music. She makes haunted mini-choirs out of her voice, re-sampled and pitch-shifted, and implants these into tracks of broken-up electronics. Deal is a strange and eerie listen indeed. Released by the Time No Place label.

Craig Brown Band
Overthinking

Craig Brown is a Detroit institution, so it could only ever have been a matter of time before he turned up on Jack White’s hardy Third Man Records. Overthinking is a slice of Brown-sound, recorded with his band, that recalls Neil Young-style country. Locals will lap it up, but this single has something to give every listener. 7” on Third Man.

Metalized Man
Losing Your Virginity: Metalized Boy’s First Adventures in Manhood

Metalized Man make music that’s perfect for those types who like electronic music but are a bit fuzzy on the idea of dancing: this stuff right here is too abstracted, noisy and weird for you to get a groove on, but boy are those textures delicious. Losing Your Virginity: Metalized Boy’s First Adventures In Manhood is the first full-length release of this beguiling project.

Succhiamo
Succhiamo

Succhiamo does the almost-unthinkable here on this eponymous two-tracker, by cheerfully remembering the much-lamented music of electroclash. That means two big and brash funtime bangers, with lyrics about sex and supermarkets and a tongue-in-cheek attitude. A very welcome release to see in a ‘serious dance music’ landscape.

Air Cushion Finish
Flink

Flink is the warped, mysterious and 8th offering of Berlin-incepted oddity - Air Cushion Finish. Fronted by the manipulated vocals of experimentalist Lippstueck, who has helped form the German experimentalist scene since the 1990's, this offering continues the pioneer's steady rise and is as intriguing as it is hypnotic.

Gypsy Mamba
Magnetic Syndromes

Californian producer Gypsy Mamba makes synth music from within the prism designed by the LA Brainfeeder crew: stuttering beats and a flare-textured psychedelic fill this record. But Magnetic Syndromes isn’t quite beat music. It finds it’s own, slightly more abstract pathway to electronic enlightenment. LP release on Alpha Pup.

Dinner
Three EPs, 2012-2014

Do you remember what you were like in 2012? I had a crazy mustache (it was good, trust me (I’m serious)), long hair and a crazy girlfriend. It’s good to remember times gone by, even if you’re glad they’re over. That’s what Dinner thought while recording his debut album. Here are his three EPs from the past 3 years, released together on vinyl. And so much has changed - the EPs are all over the place, but all hit the right spot: our heart.

Kashan

Like your jazz-funk odysseys served with a heap of melody and crunchy bass playing? Come on in. Candy Bomber
Volume 1

Bass player Paul Lemp named the Candy Bomber project after his own recording studios. He got together with a bunch of like-minded musicians to realise a dream of free musical expression. Bad Seeds drummer Thomas Wylder and Ingo Krauss, a collegue of the legendary Conny Plank, formed a three-piece core to which many more contributed. Kid Congo Powers, Swiss jazz pianist Stefan Rusconi, Jochen Arbeit from Einstürzende Neubauten, Gemma Ray and more. Paul Lemp died in tragic and unexpected circumstances so Krauss and Wylder finished the album. As Volume 1 suggests, the pair intend to continue Lemp’s Legacy.

Second Storey
Spin Cycle EP

Following releases on the likes of Houndstooth, R&S Records and Aus Music, Bristol’s Second Storey delivers an EP of techno oddities for Lloyd SB, Wallwork & TSVI’s Nervous Horizon imprint. The Spin Cycle EP’s title track is a spiralling descent to the depths of synth disintegration. It’s followed by “Critters”, a more circumspect take clanging industrial electro, whilst “Sludge 3D” is a booming excursion of weighty, throbbing techno - complete with a two-minute breakdown/build-up middle section.

Bristol’s Facta comes through with a wedge of heads-down rollers for the long winter nights. Opener and Digital Mystikz re-rub ‘Something’s Gonna Happen’ is a lowing anti-riddim in the vein of Autechre and King Midas Sound. ‘Sweet Sixteen’ is bouncy, hyper-quantized techno, and DJ October is on a Tiesto tip for his reimagining of the latter on the back end of the vinyl.

As a reinterpreted edition of Dilla's seminal Donuts album, Basement Donuts is the squelching brainchild of New Zealand producer Leonard Charles. Clocking in at a mammoth thirty-one tracks, the release is impressively raw, live and composed in a crisp and layered fashion.

Blue Hour
Unearthed

A self-released 12” from the man born Luke Standing. Unearthed is as you’d expect from someone who once found shelter under the awning of Ostgut Ton. Both sides of the record bang relentlessly at around the 130-mark, both feature loops of skittering tuned percussion, and both will be a fine addition to any capable DJ’s satchel.

Mr Dan feat. Guilty Simpson
I'm Gone / I’m Gone (instrumental)

I’m Gone is a very fun new track from Mr Dan, with a properly thumping beat and traces of some lovely samples from somewhere. Vocal flow is provided by Guilty Simpson in the second collaboration between this producer and this MC, though the first one for which they were in the same room. The track is presented in both vocal and instrumental versions on this 7” release, which is limited to 250 copies.

Urulu
Air Pacific EP

Four mid-tempo doof-wedges from the man born Taylor Freels here. With tunes entitled ‘Cinnamon Boys’ and ‘Easy Going Greg’ don’t go expecting doom-techno or anything like that. That said, these tunes are fun, affable and just as enjoyable in your room as they would be on the dancefloor. The title track whizzes and purrs charmingly and there is a level of technical proficiency on display here that one would expect of someone who has released on Dirt Crew, Let's Play House and Voyage. 12”.

Peder Mannerfelt
EQUALITY NOW

Fresh from a release on Joy Orbison/Will Bankhead’s Hinge Finger, Peder Mannerfelt hops over to Jackmaster’s Numbers for three curious slabs of sort-of-techno. Via App
Sixth Stitch

Uneasy, distorted and mangled experimental electronics from Via App. Occasionally dipping into a hard hitting techno form, but never for long enough for anything to settle. Heavily destroyed samples of modular noises, overdriven realworld sounds and god knows what, it plays out like a ghost in a machine, chaotic and constantly toying with you.

Gang
Dead

There's a rather impressive balance of grunge, psychedelia, metal and prog on this record, which is bound to attract Gang a healthy variety of fans. The single, Dead, is an unsettling and wonky set of verses that slowly build into an all out scream fest. The track smells of dread, death and something quite alien. Clean Cut Kid
Make Believe

Though I would personally find it hard to sleep at night if I released a single as cheerful and optimistic as Make Believe, I shouldn't ruin the fun for those less pessimistic and cynical than myself. So what I will say is that the new Clean Cut Kid single is a highly polished and well written tune, with pleasurably fuzzy guitars and a joyous party spirit. However, if the election of a certain spray-tanned billionaire has brought you down to my pre-existing level of bleak despair, then I'll tell you what I really think of this song in person. Released as Vinyl 7" on Polydor.

Hiele
Saints

Saints is a film about the distant and isolated island of Saint Helena, for which Hiele has provided the soundtrack. Appropriately for the nature of the film, Hiele has pulled back on the beats somewhat, choosing instead to emphasise the droning qualities of clarinets and strings and the like, over the course of eleven miniatures. Copy
Chosen Atmospheric Pieces

Portland based producer Marius Libman’s Copy project is a slow builder, with large gaps between releases he re-approaches his writing technique to develop his electronica which is steeped in chiptune cheekiness. A break away from the playful 8-bit tones of his previous releases, while the forms are still present, Chosen Atmospheric Pieces plays to a darker brooding side with a dancefloor focus.

Lifesick
6.0.1.

Lifesick is a new band made up of former members of Spinkick. That band wasn’t exactly lightweight (they tended to sound like they were charging towards you in order to kick your head in), but Lifesick is an even more blackened and ferocious hardcore prospect. 6.0.1. is released by Southern Lord.

Moon Temple
Part I

Moon Temple is the solo business of Gabriel Andruzzi, who coyly hints at his previous musical activity in his press release (I’ll spill the beans: he was in The Rapture). Part 1 of his double vinyl solo debut (released separately) is a proper electronic exploration of both acidic dancefloors and abstracted arty sound work. 45rpm 12” on WT Records, housed within an eye-blasting mirror board sleeve.

Via App
Secret Rotation

Brooklyn’s Via App drops a four-tracker on the NYC off-kilter techno imprint BANK. The 1080p affiliate’s latest shows off her versatility: “Extraction” pumps with an antsy groove, whilst “Living Decoration” throbs with hyper-precise mechanical samples. The record closes out with a proper clanging dungeon stomper but “Desert Acid” stands out with its ponderous and sludgy percussion and decay.

WOLF DEM
Hydrophobia

The anarchic nature of Philly duo WOLF DEM is no more apparent than on Hydrophobia. Pushing the boundaries of techno (and in fact anything else out there at the moment) the four-track collection is characterised by schizophrenic computer software - malfunctioning and convulsing in every direction.

Milemarker
Overseas

Prog showstoppers Milemarker have a long history of mixing a rigid post-hardcore element into synthy New Wave gloop, an undercurrent of math kinetics and metal showboating in the vox. Their new record, Overseas, panders to their old love of fronting guitars and giddily overbearing electronics. It's a bit silly, of course -- just the way they like it.

Black Manual
Mordendo Remixed

Black Manual released Mordendo in 2013 through Brigade Commerz. Jemh Circs

Marc Richter is well known under his Black To Comm moniker, with releases on Type and Dekorder. He has kept this latest project under wraps, quite successfully. Jerry Fielding
The Nightcomers

The Nightcomers is a gothic horror tale from 1971, starring Marlon Brando. Set in a grand country house and with lots of creepy goings on, there is much for film composer Jerry Fielding to sink his teeth into, and this fully-orchestrated soundtrack is tender and dramatic and highly cinematic. 180g vinyl release on Silva Screen.

CVN
Exposure

Consisting of Nobuyuki Sakuma   - a member of Japanese synth punks Jesse Ruins - this is a wild ride of chopped noise-tronics and drill like percussion. Archive are evidently in it for the long haul: The False Foundation is their tenth album! Ten is also the number of members involved in the group, meaning no shortage of ideas buzzing around in the studio. Fazed EP

Dark and dystopian techno with a clean industrial edge. Fazed is a straight hitter from a bladerunner factory, Livewire is a minimal machine stuck in a clattering loop and Okinawa is a sense shocking percussion and metal scraping flurry. Canadian producer Adam Feingold aka Ex-Terrestrial (1080p, Temple, Pacific Rhythm) returns to Steven Julien's label for a second twelve, featuring two cuts of the rugged style house/techno that Funkineven seems to hoover up for his imprint. 'Ascension' is raw and emotive with a smattering of acid, while the blue 'Inner Zone' is melancholy and introspective.
