Rick James / Prince
Secret Mixes Fixes Vol. 4 - Star Wars

Detroit based label Secret Mixes Fixes are pretty damn special. Basically specialising in DJ tools that are made up of unofficial edits and reworks of huge tracks by huge artists. In their Star Wars series they put two big acts side by side, here we have edits of Rick James backed by Prince’s Controversy and Purple Music (which is apparently an outtake from 1999). Bang for buck, I think so.

Butterfly Child
Onomatopoeia

One of those records where you have to mention the album art. There you go, I've mentioned it. It's very good. Butterfly Child's Onomatopoeia was first released in 1993 but has been given a smooth remaster on Dell'Orso. A great mix of electronica and post-rock and for fans of Bark Psychosis...I suppose? Available on double vinyl LP and CD.

Eomac
One Spirit

On One Spirit, Emoac may lazily bring about Burial comparisons due to the distinctly processed drum lines keeping time. On these two tracks however, it's clear there's more at stake. Arpeggios and grinding swells of mid range bass produce a harshness, whilst vocal snippets add a dramatic, solemn atmosphere.

Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angels
Stairgazing

Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angels play a sort of swirling psychedelic rock balladry, guitars and organ tones jostling with leaping vocals to occupy the forefront of the mix. Rhythms trundle on like obedient old dogs and chords drift lazily into one another, each song seeming never to touch the floor.

Bal5000
Bleu Infini

Lovely sparkly good-time music from Bal5000 here, with four tracks that feel like a videogame representation of an evening dancing on a Californian beach. This is house music that comes laden with cosmic synth flourishes and italo-disco edges, ready to whip up a happy storm. Bleu Infii is out on Invisible, Inc. in a limited edition of 300 12”s.

A Pulse Train
Tactus Tempus

Members of Hot Chip, Caribou, Simian Mobile Disco, Floating Points, and Junior Boys have got together to perform Frank McCarthy’s experimental composition Tactus Tempus, whereby 5 individuals improvise separately but are guided by a simple line on a score sheet, which they in turn interpret themselves. Consistently warped, spacial and well suited to some retro Doctor Who episode is Expo 70's Krautrock offering - Cleverly Mystique. featuring otherworldly melody and a melancholic sense of dread throughout, this off-kilter and ambitious collection is revitalised onto vinyl 5 years after its initial release.

SONIKKU
Diamond Dust

An interesting concept almost puts two EPs into one here, each track featuring a rework from eclectic producer Mobbs. It's all late night swirls though, with advances in rhythms and transient beat-like timbres setting tracks apart. It's the most ambient side of μ-Ziq, in a computer game in an ecotopian future.

Club 8
Golden Island

Though they haven't exactly pushed the boundaries of music as the press release tries to suggest, Swedish indie-poppers Club 8 aren't afraid to experiment with their sound and following on from their early pop-lite performances have over the years delved into the deeper murky waters of electronic textures.  Here they use unusual instrumentation and sampled voices to create an album of haunting but soothing music.

Dale Crover
The Fickle Finger Of Fate

Dale Crover is, of course, one of the core members of sludge legends Melvins, and as such has about a thousand releases to his name. But The Fickle Finger Of Fate is the first time, in all those decades of music-making, that Dale has released a full-length solo album! This rare treat mixes surprising catchiness with more disorientating weirdness, making for a wonderful whole. Perfect for Melvins fans, but maybe also for non-Melvins fans… Out on Joyful Noise.

Steve Bicknell
Awakening The Past 1

UK techno vet Steve Bicknell drops the first installment of his new ‘Awakening the Past’ series on 6Dimensions. This EP is classic outsider techno, all nervous 303s and dead-eyed drum takes. Bicknell is at his most acidic on ‘Natural Vibrations’, while ‘Conscious Awakening’ does a similar thing while cranking the distortion up a few notches.

Ryan O'Reilly
I Can’t Stand The Sound

I Can’t Stand The Sound is the result of Ryan O’Reilly’s 2017, which is to say there is a great deal about the overwhelming vortex of global political horror. Ryan’s musical style though is rather lovely sounding, so what we get is a strangely pretty expression of melancholy. I Can’t Stand The Sound is released by DNA Records.

Physical Therapy
Time Saving Tips For DJ's Vol. 1

Four house-rooted club tracks make up this energetic EP on Exotic Dance. Starting out with a barnstorming disco edit, the EP then moves onto a charged but atmospheric piano led cut. The B side takes things into a more abstract territory with distorted, broken beats before finishing on a low key rave tip.

Hanz
Plasty I

Inspired by all things cinematic, North Carolina-based producer Hanz’s latest vinyl release ‘Plasty I’ is a vivid smorgasbord of choppy trip-hop, crescendoing Spanish strings and searing post-techno. And like the movies, this record is also a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, culminating in the tense pulse of closing track “Page”.

IVVVO
Prince Of Grunge

IVVVO’s Prince of Grunge is the first release from very excellent and trendy London club night and label NYX Unchained. Though not grunge in the traditional 90s flannel shirt sense, IVVVO does borrow the genre’s harshness and exploration of anxiety angst to create tracks more for the dance floor rather than Reading Festival '92.

The Berlin Music Ensemble conducted by Craig Leon
The Film Scores and Original Orchestral Music of George Martin

George Martin is of course best known for his close involvement with those Beatles that everyone likes so much, but the man is too much of a maestro to be limited to just that reputation. This new recording by the Berlin Music Ensemble showcases a range of Martin’s work as a classical composer and arranger, from Live And Let Die to Under Milk Wood, via his own original suites. Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly
Young Adult

After shutting up shop for less time than LCD Soundsystem, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, is back with another album, Young Adult. If the solitary star in the middle of the confusing artwork didn't give it away, Sam Duckworth is openly left-wing, and is unafraid to let that ring out through his songs.

Spice Boys
Glade

Did it really take this many years for somebody to think of the band name ‘Spice Boys’? The answer is no. There are many of them. This is one of the latest, formed in Sweden in 2015. Their music doesn’t resemble the Spice Girls’ style as rendered by men, which would be cool, but rather some pretty dirty garage rock with heavily-pedalled guitars, crunchy riffs and filtered vocals. Also quite cool.

The Charlatans
Different Days

It's hard to fathom but as well as tweeting on a secondly basis Tim Burgess also manages to help make regular bursts of music both solo and with his beloved the Charlatans. It was hard to be anything but nice about their last album as a) it was genuinely good to have them back and b) if you did so the entire Twitter community would gang up on you. Anyway this is a brand new album from the band and the first since the sad passing of drummer Jon Brookes. Features guest spots from Anton Newcombe (the Brian Jonestown Massacre/Twitter), Johnny Marr (the Smiths/Twitter) and Paul Weller (not on Twitter).

Tokyo singer / producer Phew has fronted the punk band Aunt Sally and collaborated with Boredoms, Einsturzende Neubauten and half of Can over the years, so she’s evidently got the chops. Anonymous Delusional Eros

A short compilation of six highly disciplined techno pieces and a disorientating title. Anonymous Delusional Eros comes courtesy of the ol’ Nous imprint. Ayln kicks things off with a lovely metallic flange on the hats and a tumbling kick. D104’s piece is especially spacious and tense, while Gaunt’s contribution sounds like Burial in space. Dreams rounds things off with an engrossing, up-close shuffle and vicious snare-slaps. Music for haunted space stations and/or Berghain.

Mischievous-as-a-squirrel San Fran electro imprint Squirrels on Film returns with a second volume in its Various Squirrels 12” series. On the a-side, Material Squirrel kicks things off with an ominous dungeon synth raver, while Lokier harnesses an acid bassline resembling a sputtering motor. Turn over for Billy Bates’ stabby house - some nice reverb sidechain going on there. Finally, Solar goes for the hypnotic jugular with wide-stereo waving synths and a determined electro-techno beat.

Rotterdam producer Louis Guillaume drops three wads of awkwardly funky techno for Born Free. In so doing, he betrays his true identity as Akai’s hardest-working product tester. A four-track 12” from the Carlow-based duo of Dean Feeney and Eddie Reynolds, who’ve released a bunch of EPs over the last decade on labels such as Apartment and POGO Recordings. For new EP The Birds, Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker have stepped away from their full band set-up and gone with a more intimate approach. Daunt
Unbearable Light

Chiselled Londoner Daunt’s debut EP Unbearable Light is a polite bunch of funky, downtempo electropop. It can be a dreary thing to search for meaningful connections within today’s oppressive, hypermediated urban contexts. Lyrically, such a theme seems to run through each of the songs here. We’re also in for a couple of grandiose choruses on ‘Almost Anything’ and ‘Beamish Boy’. Good for driving - unless you live in London.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis
War Machine (Original Score)

You don’t need me to tell you how much of a winner this is going to be. Nick Cave & Warren Ellis, soundtrack scorers to countless high-profile films, have done the appropriate here. The new Netflix film ‘War Machine’ starring Brad Pitt and Tilda Swinton has been given the full eerie synth and strings treatment, like on ‘Skeleton Tree’ or the ‘Hell Or High Water’ score. They promise dark and light in equal measure. Of course they do. CD on Invada.

Digital Release
Positive Approach

Digital Release get a physical release - and that’s just where the confusion begins. This collaboration between ambidextrous media production centre Georgia (Brian Close and Justin Tripp) and RVNG Intl. boss Matt Werth is a rather off-the-wall adventure. The trio seem to be aiming for trippy, unbridled experimentation, with samples and loops from unrelated styles and contexts intermeshing all over the shop. Bewildering, exciting stuff via Drawing Room Records.

Aleem
Release Yourself

Originally released in 1984, identical-twin-brother duo Aleem’s Release Yourself gets a timely repress. This is an early electro masterpiece that goes a long way in showing what subsequent trends have inherited (vocal sample re-pitch, reverence for drum machines, etc.) and what, for better or for worse, they’ve largely discarded (infectious, funky positivity). They don’t make it like this anymore. Comes with free titular advice to any artists struggling for label deals.

Blitzen Trapper
Wild and Reckless

Portland’s own Blitzen Trapper  present an album described as “Half musical - Half rock-opera” (which in my mind is a bit like being half strangled / half drowned), it’s also a companion piece to their 2008 album Furr. We have seven songs from the production with the themes (“darker dystopian stories of rural and suburban west coast death-drive via a riffing psychedelic landscape”) expanded to get us up to twelve tracks. We all like to get wild and we all like to get reckless. But Wild & Reckless? The choice is yours.

John FM
Ricochet ...And Then Leave

After two EPs with FXHE, John FM brings his brand of house to Trilogy Tapes for a third slab of wax. Ricochet…...And Then Leave comes highly recommended by those in the know and is even to said to better his previous efforts. Ricochet has an old skool, relaxed vibe whilst ...And Then Leave begins with glitchy beeps before being underpinned by a definitive thud.  Two track 12” on Trilogy Tapes.

Nukubus
Para

Nukubus is Jan Katsma from friends of Bunker, Syncom Data. Para is his first solo outing for three years and sees him ramping up the dub on six synth workouts. Powerful yet restrained, in places, the pieces are reminiscent of the tunes Katsma/SD did for Dettmann and Stingray mixtapes. 12” on Laura Lies.

DJ Spider & Franklin De Costa
F Planet

Spacious and claustrophobic at the same time, DJ Spider & Franklin De Costa's 'F Planet' gives us grumbling, percussive techno, rising and dipping in sonic height. The free manipulations lend the tracks a unique sense of life, patches of noise here, wild frequency and filter shifts there, evolving in two directions at once. Includes a killer remix by the mighty Shifted (Avian, Mote-Evolver, Hospital Productions).

The Belle Game
Fear / Nothing

The second effort from Vancouver dreampop outfit The Belle Game, Fear / Nothing sees the band rework their sound and broaden their horizons. Their characteristically fuzzy pastel sound is contrasted with darker lyrics and bolder percussion. Near-ecstatic vocal highs take their place alongside a few brooding numbers, all infused with synths and classic reverb.

White Room
Eight

Brighton indie five-piece White Room release their double EP, Eight, on Deltasonic. Their psych-pop takes nods from contemporary faves like Pond and Temples, while the vocals seem to take cues from the likes of Drowners. They’ve ran with the idea of the number eight structurally and thematically, with songs released in four sets of pairs before this amalgamation on vinyl. Quick maths.

Dis Ya Sound

Classy reissue from Jamwax. ‘Dis Ya Sound’ is a pleasant bit of dub-reggae that is served with all the trimmings. Incredible Rock City
Invasion Of The Rock-O-Mites

Obscuro vintage wonder here from The Incredible Rock City Band, a touring group in the 80’s who apparently only played at US army bases. To Him Who Has Nothing

Intriguing debut EP from some shadowy figure or figures from Dublin. The five tracks are more or less variations on a dubbed-up house style, full of unpredictable interjections in the form of blurry chord stabs and stray snatches of melody over precariously rickety beats. It never quite falls apart, but maintains a lovely elusive and ambiguous vibe throughout.

Stepping away for a minute from his recent killer collaborations with Ghostface Killah, producer (and entertainment law professor!) The Electronique Void certainly has the playful vibe of some early synth pioneers, though with an extra helping of groove in the mix. Out on Linear Labs.

Andy Human & The Reptoids
Kill The Comma

“Is it modern cause we killed the comma?” ask Andy Human & the Reptoids on their gritty new 7” for Emotional Response entitled Kill the Comma. For what it’s worth it’s high time somebody offed the Oxford comma. In any case there is some solid channelling of the garage punk spirit going on here. Andy’s vocal style is well balanced between entertainer and provocateur while the guitar is fabulously hash - especially so on the title tune.

Savage doesn't conform to tempo traditions; what better way to demonstrate its slower incarnations than with this 12" from Pinch.
