Life In Film
Cold Wire

The debut single from much-hyped London band Life in Film proves that sometimes, hype is well deserved. This young indie band look like they could go far with this tight, well-crafted single, with elements of Johnny Marr’s guitar and Nick Cave’s angst. Keep an eye out for the album dropping in early May 2015. Vinyl 7".

Kensuke Ide with His Mothership featuring Pongsapon Upani vs Hair Stylistics
Otemoyan Isan

Kensuke Ide And His Mothership make gloriously soft and sweet “Luk Thung” (Thai country music), joined here by Khaen player Pongsapong Upani, Otemoyan Isan is a pop song crossover track in support of the film Bangkok Nites. Backed with an instrumental and remix from Hair Stylistics/Violent Onsen Geisha (imagine V/Vm with hip hop breaks). This record is equal parts fun, sweet and completely bonkers.

Saskwatch
I Get Lonely

Fun, light-hearted soulful track from Saskwatch - belting voice and a garage rock vibe. Loud guitars, crashing drums and just a little tease of brass to make this a great little number. A nine piece band help to create the tight yet many-layered sound which gives these guys their charm. On vinyl from Northside Records.

Co La / Jeremy Hyman
369.002

369 Records return with their second release from their base in Brooklyn. This vinyl is a 12" split featuring Co La and Jeremy Hyman. Co La releases his own self extended version of his single "Barricade". This tune intrigues the listener using fast paced action, readying anyone up for the things to come. Found on the other side is Jeremy Hyman's song - a trancing melody, seeming to almost hypnotise you with the rhythm. Heavy bass mixed with loud claps can be found booming throughout this encapsulating song. The two of these richly historical, self-made electrifying artists join forces with pride on 396.002, and will leave you begging for more.

Bandshell
Part-Time Gunslinger

Bandshell gives us four vigorous new tracks to chew over, housed inside some of the finest sleeve art I’ve seen on a 12” for a while. Part-Time Gunslinger’s rhythms stutter and clunk in enjoyable ways, and the rest of Bandshell’s track constructions are also full of offset surprises. 12” on the FTD label.

Kemback
Carduelis

Geoff Wright - otherwise known as Kemback - occupies himself with many different professions (violinist, teacher, producer, to name a few). Kemback's history is fairly strong; having released records with features from people like DJ Bone, and recording with labels like Omena Records, he has built quite a name for himself. This vinyl is another taste into the intricate and eclectic work from a man as special as Kemback.

Deca
Mass

Deca’s music has been quietly doing its thing in the underground of Italy’s electronic experimental music scene for years. This album of Roland synthesiser explorations dates back to the late 80’s, when it was released only in a very limited cassette edition. Mass is full of the dark pulse and throb of the 80’s electro era, but expressed in Deca’s own special way. Vinyl reissue on Mondo Groove.

The Gate
Stench

The Gate's fourth record, the not at all repulsively-titled 'Stench', was recorded out in New York and birthed a few good twists and turns in the time between its inception and release. The power metal band went overboard with this one, bringing in touches of psych and funk, as well as their usual love of jazz. Weird world, my friends.

James Hoff
Blaster

Abstract idea artist James Hoff offers up this one for PAN, entitled 'Blaster', a word that has been run through a very bad anagram machine to produce seven tracks with the same letters (and one called, rather bluntly, "Scratch"). These compositions are experiments in the basest form of the word: they're focused around Hoff letting his beats contract computer viruses and seeing what the result was. Hoff's plan is to show the similarities between the music artists make and the viruses that ruin computers: in both cases, someone had to start the fire. True musique concrete if I ever heard it.

Jesse Ruins
Fractured Holy Symmetry

'A Film' was a record by shoegazing, pop dreaming, electronica-tinkering band Jesse Ruins, and 'Fractured Holy Symmetry' is a companion piece for all those who loved it, featuring remixes by artists such as Soft Metals, Naliza Moo, Radio Friends and Diane Halls, as well as six new Jesse Ruins tracks. A varied offering of noise and synth pop.

The Gamecock
All Right, Hen?

Formed in 2010, Gamecock are a two piece comprised of Stuart Arnot (Smear Campaign/Total Vermin Tapes) and Nick Mitchell (Chalaque/Golden Lab Records). ‘All Right, Hen?’ is a reissue put out by Golden Lab because neither of them had a copy of either the original cassette release on Gary War’s Fixed Identity or the subsequent Beartown reissue. Their music is a spontaneous, electronic, broken funk in the same gene pool as Skaters or Cabaret Voltaire.

Big French
Stone Fish

A second full-length album of the strange and personal weird-pop vision conjured up by Quentin Moore and the rest of the Big French crew. Stone Fish’s sixteen tracks are tight but wobbly, pirouetting quickly between different high-technique guitar parts, grooves and melodic ideas. Plus keen exploitation of quirks of the reel-to-reel tape recording medium! On Wharf Cat Records.

Jean-Louis Costes
Le fantôme d'Archie Shepp

Here we have a live album from Jean-Louis Costes, recorded at the famed Instants Chavirés venue. I’m not entirely sure what subjects are inspiring Costes on Le fantome d’Archie Shepp, as I don’t speak French, but from the demented style of his vocals, he may well be possessed by the ghost of Shepp. An LP of fully committed odd-songs on the Disques Charivari label.

Quilt Boy
I Am Somebody

Quilt Boy is a Detroit outsider dude, making music all by himself that toes the line between proggy excess and lo-fi noise scrabble all at once. This 7” contains five tracks of highly-messy guitar / synth / mumble skronk, and it's a wonderfully fun thing. I Am Somebody is released in a limited edition of 250 by Sophomore Lounge.

Deep, dark and funky dub atmospherics from one of the original South London dubstep crew. Lion and Thunder is a taut and paranoid piece of electronica drawn from Kromestar’s archives and beautifully pressed as a white label 12” vinyl. They don’t make basslines like these anymore...

Glass Vaults
The New Happy

Psychedelic indie pop band from New Zealand Glass Vaults return with their sophomore album The New Happy. Following on from Sojourn the album pushes more sunshine pop whilst retaining the psych tonality of their more sun-kissed shoegaze. Up-beat, loving, fun and incredibly positive. That’s good, yes?

Simbiosi
Indastria EP

The Shapednoise-helmed Cosmo Rhythmatic (King Midas Sound, Mika Vainio) hosts the first new Simbiosi material since 2015’s mega-LP Elements. This Italian duo are known to be favourites of Actress and you can tell why when you listen to Indastria - the way that the pair layer degraded dystopian synth tones over industrial rhythms and plumes of harsh noise is the sort of thing Darren Cunningham loves to do in his own work.

Stump Valley
...

Stump Valley claim to have moved all their studio gear out into the woods when they sat down to record this release. Although that feels a little doubtful (all those synths and drum machines sure sound connected to a power supply), the blissful unhurried tone of these Balearic-style recordings feels about right for such a context. … is out on Dopeness Galore.

White Violet
Ages

White Violet’s process for this record involved a year-long process of writing pairs of songs, each pair consciously developing on the themes of the previous. The resulting album Ages ended up being about time and ageing and adulthood, with songs that manage these themes intimately and maturely. Released on vinyl by Normaltown Records.

Doubler
Alter-VU

A four-track release from Doubler on the appropriately-named Confuse House label. Alter VU does have the fundamentals of house music, but the edges are fuzzy and stranger things are going on, so that this can’t necessarily be called dancing music. Tasty quasi-ambient unhouse sounds. Alter VU is released in a limited edition of 200 12” copies.

Body Boys
H

Sounds recorded sometime in the past of the Body Boys’ recording career. H is the project’s first release on Civilised Life, and comes fully-loaded with five cuts of explorative electronics that toy around with a little bit of ambience (e.g. the title track and ‘Imprint’) as well as jumpy club steppers. 12” EP on Civilised Life with hand-stamped covers.

Three short new pieces from soulful producer SMBD, who here toys with spacey ambient and deep house styles with playful aplomb. Fallbeil are a Hamburg crew who rock a really sharp combination of electro and acid: the squelches are severe and the percussion is fat. FAY
Deal

FAY combines a Holly Herndonesque approach to chopping and screwing her own voice with a drone-dub aesthetic and an avant approach to electronic music. She makes haunted mini-choirs out of her voice, re-sampled and pitch-shifted, and implants these into tracks of broken-up electronics. Deal is a strange and eerie listen indeed. Californian producer Gypsy Mamba makes synth music from within the prism designed by the LA Brainfeeder crew: stuttering beats and a flare-textured psychedelic fill this record. Dinner
Three EPs, 2012-2014

Do you remember what you were like in 2012? I had a crazy mustache (it was good, trust me (I’m serious)), long hair and a crazy girlfriend. It’s good to remember times gone by, even if you’re glad they’re over. That’s what Dinner thought while recording his debut album. Here are his three EPs from the past 3 years, released together on vinyl. And so much has changed - the EPs are all over the place, but all hit the right spot: our heart.

Opener and Digital Mystikz re-rub ‘Something’s Gonna Happen’ is a lowing anti-riddim in the vein of Autechre and King Midas Sound. ‘Sweet Sixteen’ is bouncy, hyper-quantized techno, and DJ October is on a Tiesto tip for his reimagining of the latter on the back end of the vinyl.

Mazozma's FATUFAIRFE
Mazozma's FATUFAIRFE

It looks like this release is the only opportunity to hear the full-sized band Mazozma’s FATUFAIRFE, a group unwieldy in both name and line-up. Ma Turner and John Philip Farmer are at the core, playing their compositions with musicians previously sighted alongside R. Stevie Moore, Apples In Stereo, Blood Pheasant etc. 12 inches of weirdo rock, packed in envelopes with Jim Marlowe artwork.

Time Rewind

New EP from INKAMERA, the production / vocal project of fresh electro queen Victoria Lukas whom was half of Zerkalo with Drexciya/Dopplereffekt's Gerald Donald. Time Rewind is a set of club tunes that also move like synth-pop songs: a neat balance. Time Rewind’s seven tracks are pressed to twelve inches beautiful clear white vinyl, released by the Last Known Trajectory label.

Leonard Charles
Basement Donuts

As a reinterpreted edition of Dilla's seminal Donuts album, Basement Donuts is the squelching brainchild of New Zealand producer Leonard Charles. Clocking in at a mammoth thirty-one tracks, the release is impressively raw, live and composed in a crisp and layered fashion.

Urulu
Air Pacific EP

Four mid-tempo doof-wedges from the man born Taylor Freels here. With tunes entitled ‘Cinnamon Boys’ and ‘Easy Going Greg’ don’t go expecting doom-techno or anything like that. That said, these tunes are fun, affable and just as enjoyable in your room as they would be on the dancefloor. The title track whizzes and purrs charmingly and there is a level of technical proficiency on display here that one would expect of someone who has released on Dirt Crew, Let's Play House and Voyage. 12”.

Misantrop
Limerence

With shades of house, techno and IDM, Misantrop emerges from obscurity to present his hypnotic four track debut, Limerence. Expect progressive analog beats and wobbly bass lines as Misantrop slowly tweaks the parameters to create an atmosphere of edge-of-seat electricity. Released as Vinyl 12" on the Foul Up label.

Mickey Pearce
Top 5 Goat Memes

Yeah its 2016, people are allowed to drop records named Top 5 Goat Memes these days, deal with it. Mickey Pearce has done that, though he’s more serious about his productions than you might assume. The title track bumps and pops real nicely, with enough twists and turns to keep you on your toes. The Top 5 Goat Memes 12” is out on Ten Thousand Yen.

Clean Cut Kid
Make Believe

Though I would personally find it hard to sleep at night if I released a single as cheerful and optimistic as Make Believe, I shouldn't ruin the fun for those less pessimistic and cynical than myself. So what I will say is that the new Clean Cut Kid single is a highly polished and well written tune, with pleasurably fuzzy guitars and a joyous party spirit. However, if the election of a certain spray-tanned billionaire has brought you down to my pre-existing level of bleak despair, then I'll tell you what I really think of this song in person. Released as Vinyl 7" on Polydor.

GIL
Orchids & Wasps

Please welcome new producer GIL, presenting their debut EP on the Danse Noire imprint. Orchids & Wasps gets busy with some of that sweet mutant club sound, wherein addictive rhythms and samples are stacked up so tall that the listener / dancer becomes ecstatically overwhelmed. J.G. Biberkopf and Imaabs both try to mitigate the chaos with remixes.

Graze
XUP

Graze is a pair of producers, Adam Marshall and Christian Anderson, each of whom grew up in Canada but now live in Berlin. Their immersion in the city of techno has honed their skills, though XUP isn’t only four-to-the-floor blasters: for example, ‘Vast’ is a powerful and remarkably slow cut. Released as part of the Dekmantel label’s UFO series.

Moon Temple
Part I

Moon Temple is the solo business of Gabriel Andruzzi, who coyly hints at his previous musical activity in his press release (I’ll spill the beans: he was in The Rapture). Part 1 of his double vinyl solo debut (released separately) is a proper electronic exploration of both acidic dancefloors and abstracted arty sound work. 45rpm 12” on WT Records, housed within an eye-blasting mirror board sleeve.

Moon Temple is the solo business of Gabriel Andruzzi, who coyly hints at his previous musical activity in his press release (I’ll spill the beans: he was in The Rapture). WOLF DEM
Hydrophobia

The anarchic nature of Philly duo WOLF DEM is no more apparent than on Hydrophobia. Pushing the boundaries of techno (and in fact anything else out there at the moment) the four-track collection is characterised by schizophrenic computer software - malfunctioning and convulsing in every direction.

Black Manual
Mordendo Remixed

Black Manual released Mordendo in 2013 through Brigade Commerz. Fusing life tribal percussion and destructive electronics the result was a distant flurry of experimentation and rhythm fighting with each other. The pieces have been palmed over to the fitting hands of Cut Hands, EmptySet’s James Ginzburg (Bleed Turquoise), Format01, and KETEV. Punishment.

Jemh Circs
Jemh Circs

Marc Richter is well known under his Black To Comm moniker, with releases on Type and Dekorder. He has kept this latest project under wraps, quite successfully. The product of scouring YouTube for pop vocals Jemh Circs brings an almost vaporwave artificiality and pop culture clash, droning and melodic, it’s a bizarre world to be shown.

CVN
Exposure

Consisting of Nobuyuki Sakuma   - a member of Japanese synth punks Jesse Ruins - this is a wild ride of chopped noise-tronics and drill like percussion. Sakuma produces a warped and mutant form of juxtaposed electronica  - the percussion is ear splittingly harsh yet beneath there is some semblance of melodic electronics  - even pianos.

Killawatt
Fazed EP

Dark and dystopian techno with a clean industrial edge. Fazed is a straight hitter from a bladerunner factory, Livewire is a minimal machine stuck in a clattering loop and Okinawa is a sense shocking percussion and metal scraping flurry. With two remixes of Livewire, Sergie Rezza turning it into a hard hitting club track and Ossia turning into a halftime stepper shuffle.

Adam Feingold
Ascension

Canadian producer Adam Feingold aka Ex-Terrestrial (1080p, Temple, Pacific Rhythm) returns to Steven Julien's label for a second twelve, featuring two cuts of the rugged style house/techno that Funkineven seems to hoover up for his imprint. 'Ascension' is raw and emotive with a smattering of acid, while the blue 'Inner Zone' is melancholy and introspective.

Marcellus Pittman
Sneak Attack / Random Acts of Insanity

4 years ago, Marcellus Pittman wowed people with Pieces, his debut full-length album on Unirhythm. Now he sneaks out 2 of the strongest tracks from that collection for DJ-friendly 12” release. Sneak Attack and Random Acts of Insanity both rely on delicious acidic synth-tones, and would provide hectic happiness to any dancefloor.

The Galactic Clock

Punchy, tough atmosphere-drenched techno with shades of, say, Ancient Methods but a little less sonically brutal. Yet this EP is gonna be devastating on the dancefloor, loaded as it is with floor-scorching industrial vigour and a clenched fistful of mechanical funk.  A1. CyclesA2. Question B1. GalaxyB2. Heart

J Velez
Ausland

Lost in the cosmos with J Velez. Ausland are two hot efforts from the state side technophile. These jams are stone cold killers assassinations, with the deep water diving of "Ausland" - effortlessly loosening you up for the floor. Perhaps inspired by Lynch, "Lost Highway" is the early morning failed rescue attempt, with captain and crew drowning in a wash of synths, kicks, hand claps and sirens. Headhunter
Atijo / Ina

Yaaassssssss! Spin it back to early 2000s and the rise of Tempa records, remember when dubstep was good etc. etc. etc.. Maybe more that it was still a pioneering genre. After remixing Lakker on R&S, Lahun has been snapped up by Apollo. Open and sparse but filled with texture and soul, his work falls around James Blake and J Dilla with a palette affected by a 90s rave scene background. Huge developing pads, slow shuffles, and with Sara Garvey soul cutting vocals on the opening track to settle you in for some slow grooves.

Delightful, rough and ready, quirky, lofi indie pop songs that fans of stuff like Smog will absolutely lap up.  Mostly known for his huge amounts of work in the band Refrigerator, and having gone under monikers even his own press mock him for, A Bed of Light is Dennis Callaci’s first actual solo album.

Venus II
Inside Your Sun

Australia based Jarrad Brown of Eagle & The Worm and Ryan Grieve of Canyons make up Venus II. Trippy, psychedelic, sweaty and fist pumpingly fun.
