The Room Below
Healing Scaphoids

The Room Below titled this lovely little EP after an unfortunate pair of London cycling injuries. Healing Scaphoids was thus created during a period of recovery, which lends a thoughtful, slightly wonky flavour to these tracks that would make them an interesting addition to any club set. 12” on Don’t Be Afraid.

Glenn Astro & Hodini
Turquoise Tortoise

Collaborative weird funk album from Glenn Astro and Hodini. Collaborative might be a bit misleading as the distance between Berlin and Cologne meant the pair worked on these tracks separately. Turquoise Tortoise becomes one in their constant referencing of each other's tracks. Released on Apollo.

Hearts Hearts
Goods / Gods

Second album from fidgety Austrians Hearts Hearts. You may have noticed their penchant for forward slashes which for them represents a kind of freedom. Well here we have an album that is somewhere nearer the experimental end of pop / rock. In the end all I can do is leave you with the decision to buy / don't.

Hiroshi Watanabe
Threshold of Eternity EP

Derrick May’s titanic Transmat fronts their second release from Hiroshi Watanabe - someone you might know better as Kaito. Watanabe throws something of a curveball for Threshold of Eternity’s first track. As its title suggests, ‘The Leonodis Strings’ is a violin-led ditty that bares similarities to Hans Zimmer, John Williams and other film composers. Order is restored on the fuzzy Midwest techno of B-side ‘In To The Memory’.

Girl
Sea and Dirt

Girl is a Norwegian duo containing two musicians who’ve been busy with plenty of other projects over the years (thing Fay Wildhagen and Ich Bin N!ntendo for starters). Their lovely-sounding debut album Sea and Dirt was released digitally in the summer, but this first-time physical vinyl edition adds an exclusive bonus song. Out on Sonata.

Ludgate Squatter
U.K. Steel EP

Glaswegian imprint West End Communications (Perth Drug Legend, Obstrct) drop an EP from Ludgate Squatter. U.K. Steel really lives up to its name, containing as it does four dirty, rasping techno jams and a (slightly) softer closer, the Ross From Friends-esque ‘Off Days’. Of the meatier cuts, DMX Krew tributes ‘Almost’ and ‘Believe’ are the highlights.

L/F/D/M
X-Enter-O EP

L/F/D/M - that’s Love’s Flacid Disco Muscle, by the way - drops an EP of brain-bending futuro-acid for Singaporean label Midnight Shift (KiNK, Terrence Parker). Both A-sides are heavy DJ tools characterised by seasick 303s, distorted drums and grainy synth bleeps. They might fry your mixer. ‘Silver Grain’ is a bit more restrained, while the D-56M remix is a louche house take akin to Peder Mannerfelt.

Kingsley Bucknor
Just U and Me

Kingsley Bucknor started out playing with Fela Kuti in his native Nigeria, before recording this self-released electrofunk album in London in 1985. It’s quite a bit different from African Woman, his recently reissued, Lagos-recorded 1979 LP, but there’s still a discernible Afrobeat flavour atop the Zapp-influenced, vocoder-drenched grooves. A particular highlight is Don't Give Up Ya Luv, which highlights his sloppy DIY eccentricities while being funky and smooth where it counts.

Ben & Sadar's
We Are Righteous People

This is a bold and direct couple of tracks, straight-up disco jams forged from the apt collaboration of Ben & Sadar. As a wholly organic piece, nothing is sampled here - only clean cut bass, sax, guitar and drum programs amount to We Are Righteous People. It's a must have for retro electro fiend.

Tommy Mandel
Mello Magic

Best known as some 80s fingers for hire - he played keys for Bryan Adams, The Clash and plenty of others - Tommy Mandel has also self-released plenty of his own work down the years. Invisible City hoover up some of the stuff he put to tape in the 80s for a compilation of ‘corporate ambient’ (Mandel’s own term). The wry hypnagogic bent of Mello Magic makes it the perfect album for you if you’re one of those people who’s really got into Yellow Magic Orchestra and Haruomi Hosono over the past couple of years.

Girl Ray
The Way We Came Back

This new single by Girl Ray contains a song Poppy Hankin wrote when she was 16 years old (she's not much older than that now to be fair). So it's nice to see she's not ashamed of her past. Expect a similar kind of naive and charming indie pop as shown on their recent well regarded album 'Earl Grey'.

Fahrland
Mixtape Vol. 1

If you left the city that never sleeps because it managed to sneak a gram of ket into Berghain and moved to the countryside what sort of music would you make? Fahrland (aka Geiger) recently made that move and is now producing the sort of lush, funky, and assured electro pop that screams going to bed before midnight.

Automelodi
Surlendemains Acides

Hardware fans get ready! Automelodi is Montréal's Xavier Paradis, a man who knows his way around knobs and sliders better than most. This is a reissue of his 2013 album Surlendemains Acides, a collection of dense and energetic analogue synth pop. It's the sort of thing that'd bring a bit of warmth to a cold Montréal winter night.

First faithful reissue of the soundtrack to Nicolas Roeg's clunkily named A Venezia Un Dicembre Rosso Shocking. Though no way near as well known as big man Ennio Morricone (how could he be?), Pino Donaggio deserves to be spoken of alongside him for being able to capture the specific mood of Venice.

Joey Anderson
Invisible Switch

Joey Anderson is a master producer of inventive and atmospheric techno / house: on several tracks here, he takes one little sound and toys with it back and forth over sturdy 4/4 backing. Invisible Switch brings him back to Dekmantel after having previously released on Anunnaki Cartel and Tanstaafl Planets. CD or 2LP.

John Beltran
Moth

A career spanning over 25 years has seen Michigan born John Beltran release ten albums, appearing on Apollo, R&S, Peacefrog, Delsin and a ton of EPs on the likes of Ubiquity, Styrax Leaves, Exceptional and recently Fourtet's Text label. For his eleventh full-length he arrives on Belgium's De:tuned label with his usual high quality, soulful, emotion loaded style of deep techno and house. We can hear his formative influences of early Detrot techno and Chicago House, particularly in the Larry Heard/MrFingers inspired 'The Returning Dance. 180g vinyl, mastered by Matt Colton.

Arandel
Turbatrix

“Ok then, back to basics/Grab your shell-toes and Arundel’s Turbatrix.” Who’d ever have thought that Robbie Williams would have liked his techno served up by the kooks at Sheffield’s Computer Club and shrouded in the sort of heady, claustrophobic ambiences you’d tend to associate with an Ostgut Ton release? Still, you heard the man. Take both pills. F*ck the matrix.

Jesper Kyd
Robinson: The Journey

A computer game composer heavyweight, Jesper Kyd’s legacy traces through Hitman, Assassin’s Creed, Darksiders, Unreal Tournament and many more. This recent commission took him into VR territory for the sci-fi adventure Robinson: The Journey. Perhaps appropriate to the dynamic immersion of VR experiences, Kyd’s soundtrack is relatively sparse and unobtrusive, creating a faintly tense, cinematic, dark ambient atmosphere.

Peter Harris
Adverts!

Eccentric artist and musician Peter Harris, from London band Piper’s Son, doesn’t know how to describe the music on his new solo album, Adverts, so I’ll have a go. It’s a teeny bit Elliott Smith and a teeny bit Roy Harper, with some cosmic oddball elements thrown in. He seems to have the backing of Lee ’Scratch’ Perry and Adrian Sherwood too. Vic Goddard guests. LP on Trashmouth Records.

Firestations
The Year Dot

Firestations are the latest outfit to emerge from the ever interesting Lost Map stable and this debut features a brand of nice-listen indie pop with perky melodies, sunshiny vibes and unthreatening subject manner. mmph
Dear God

Young South Korean Bostonian mmph (one Sae Heum Han) wanders through uneasy drama-scapes on his debut mini-album Dear God for Tri Angle. Momentary brushes of stereo-flitting textures, stop-start percussion and other sounds processed beyond recognition are guided by ebbs of cinematic synth and sampler. Serious stuff.

SCB
Caibu

This one’s been coming. After two 2017 EPs (and next month’s Engineered Morality), Paul Rose aka Scuba aka SCB gives us the first LP from his vowel-phobic project. Anyone coming here and expecting a nice fix of jacking house will be left disappointed - SCB’s stuff is less welcoming, full of foreboding synths and hard, no-bs techno drums. Throw in a concept where Rose uses the LP “to explore the fictional narrative in which a hypothetical timeline is corrupted by a climate-related disaster”, and it all adds up to Caibu being a rather bracing experience.

Diet Cig
Over Easy

People really enjoy having overblown opinions about the very chill band Diet Cig but they will essentially work for you if you like having feelings over decent chord progressions and enjoy the bridge built between indie rock and pop punk. Over Easy is five songs, an EP if you will, and it was initially released in 2015.

John Matthias & Jay Auborn
Pretoria Remixed

John Matthias (Derailer) joined forces with composer Jay Auborn to release Race To Zero through Village Green records in 2017, mixing modern classical with heavy electronic production. Here they bring Bristolian producer CUTS, Will Young’s (not that one) Moon Gangs project, and former Mogwai guitarist John Cummings in to remix the track Pretoria. Turning this cinematic piece in two very different interpretations.

Blessed Initiative

Deep work here from the classically trained Yair Elazar Glotman aka Blessed Initiative. Kuniyuki & Fumio Itabashi
Once Again

Now on vinyl for the first time, ‘Once Again’ from the 2009 album Walking in The Naked City is versatile producer Kuniyuki Takahashi’s collaboration with acclaimed jazz pianist Fumio Itabashi and German producer Henrik Schwarz (providing vocals) to create a clattering, groove-oozin’  piece of house fusion. On the flip is another excerpt from the album, ‘River’, a calmer affair with rippling piano, crackling percussion and wafting synth.

Man Duo
Orbit

Squelchy pop elegance from Man Duo, whose versatile, party trick approach to electronica is lightly informed by their previous work together as Amateurs de Vérité -- which tinged their synthwork with psych folk. The duo's follow-up, Orbit, can be light and washy, hard industrial and even throw-down house, twisting and turning into a meandering dance record that bangs before going ethereal. Vocals are cooed in English, Finnish and Italian, the record sounding collaged amidst its constant forward momentum.

Studio Mule
Carnaval feat. Miyako Kouda

Clearly no longer content with being one of the most consistently excellent house labels of the last decade, Mule Musiq branch out with this mysterious new Studio Mule project. Not much is known about the group’s membership - our guess is that MM boss Toshiya Kawasaki might have something to do with it. However, there are three things that we can say for sure: 1) ‘Carnaval’ is a cover of a Taeko Ohnuki’s classic. 2) This version features vocals from Dip In The Pool’s Miyako Kouda. 3) Both edits of the track here are perky acid/disco jams that will bring a smile to your face.

Antemeridian
Ante Meridian EP

After releases on Long Island Electrical Systems and Silent Season under her Antenes moniker, Brooklyn-based-but-Chicago-raised producer Lori Napoleon switches the name up for her debut on NYC’s The Bunker (Gunnar Haslam, Justin Cudmore). Her Antemeridian work sees Napoleon steering a more melodic course through the club sounds of her native Midwest. One of the things that gives Ante Meridiem an edge is that Napoleon built a few of her synthesisers herself, and there’s a nice rough-and-ready feel to the sounds they produce - try the dark, keening closer ‘Lavender’.

They got together to try to remake MBV 'Loveless' and to discuss various guitar bowing techniques but have since gone on to explore texture, guitar drones and pedal techniques. They also come from Beirut and contain former members of Johnny Kafta’s Anti-Vegetarian Orchestra.

Bird Of Paradise
Smoking Holiday EP

UK producer Jo Howard's latest EP contains for varied tracks from the retro-tech diaspora. Opening with a paranoid, down tempo number before moving onto the 80s futura of 'Joy-Rides', side A is all atmosphere. Side B brings in a steady hypnosis on the title track, before the pummelling 'Breather Resist' closes things on a faster tip.

Vermont
II Remixes

Having dropped their second album on Kompakt earlier in the year, Danilo ‘Motor City Drum Ensemble’ Plessow and Marcus Worgull get the remix treatment from a host of hustlers compatible with the Kompakt way of doing things. Dixon drops a vocal and instrumental version of “Dschuna” and Wolfgang Voigt gets austere all over “Paradigma” in his Wassermann guise, but it’s I:Cube who comes out on top with a romantic, discofied cruise through “Skorbut”.

Never overdubbed and always improvised guitar ambience from Toronto's Colin Fisher. A serial collaborator (Not the Wind, Not the Flag, Caribou) now breaking out on his own with the help of The Pape. The Pape has helped guide Fisher truly understand himself as a musician, and helped him produce so very beautiful music along the way. Hurray for The Pape!

Blaenavon
Let's Pray / I Will Be The World

Let’s Pray is the second track from Blaenavon’s upcoming debut album and it certainly sounds like the real deal. Some heavy bass circling around some quiet-quiet-loud guitar and stellar vocals. It reminds me of The Maccabees or a rockier Alt-J. Backed with I Will Be The World, out now on Transgressive.

Heavy Metal
The Nietzschean Supermen Of Dustbin Rock

Heavy Metal are a weirdo punk band from Berlin. Quite hard to put a finger on their sound but I’m thinking Truman’s Water meets Jilted John. And odd mix, I know. There’s a real plethora of sounds on The Nietzschean Supermen Of Dustbin Rock. Lyrically, they’ve been likened to a hyper Dan Treacy of Television Personalities. All I can tell you is that this is certainly a listening experience that’s not easy to forget. Limited Gold vinyl LP on Harbinger Sound.

Respuesta Alternativa
Grata Compania

Jesus Ma Catalana (what a name) cut these five tracks as Respuesta Alternativa back in the early 80s. Loading up his synths and drum machines, he got other musicians to solo over the top of them and create this odd record. Weirdo-lounge jazz meets synth-pop, that sort of thing. Weather Report if they were a one-man bedroom project. Reissued by Left Ear Records.

Dekmantel 10 Years 09

As we near the end of the series, number nine presents us with exclusive tracks from producers as varied as Space Dimension Controller, Bufiman and Lena Willikens (who is usually heard in a pure DJ capacity). Quite an exciting set eh? 12” from Dekmantel.

Jayson Wynters
Industrial Espionage

Four track techno EP from Birmingham's Jayson Wynters. Wynter's techno darts and weaves, it knows when to sprint and when to take a break. Industrial Sabotage is an apt name then, it breaks up the repetition and monotony in order to aim for something higher. Released on the lovely Don't Be Afraid.

Willie Graff & Darren Eboli
The Tribeca Tapes

Denmark’s Music For Dreams have done a nice line in blissful post-Balearia for just shy of two decades now. Their latest release, an EP from Willie Graff & Darren Eboli, is no exception. The Tribeca Tapes is as technicolour as its artwork. Tracks like ‘First Light’ and ‘Moon Tan’ nod to the recent Talaboman record with their low-slung minor-key grooves, while ‘Love Flight’ and ‘Second Sun’ are breezier affairs. Will appeal to anyone who enjoys the output of labels like Beats In Space or Second Circle.

Solitary Dancer
In The Name Of The Mother

Optimo call time on their successful Optimo Trax offshoot at the thirty-third release. The EP in question, courtesy of Montreal’s Solitary Dancer, is also one of the more unusual pressings in the series. The three tracks on In The Name Of The Mother are all reverb-fugged edge-of-the-dancefloor numbers that by turns recall The Orb (‘Heroine Dub’), Inga Copeland (‘La Donna’) and Suicideyear (‘Lady Pimp’).

Ron Trent vs Lono Brazil vs Dazzle Drums
Manchild (In The Promised Land)

Ron Trent and Lono Brazil. You probably know what this is going to sound like already, don’t you? And it does. Trent cooks up one of those classic Mahogani Music-type house tracks that seem to just get better with age, while Brazil chats a sort of pseudo-beat-poet diatribe over the top. The B-side sees Japanese duo Dazzle Drums come through with the sort of edit that this blurb writer would describe as ‘tribal house’ if he thought it was an acceptable term to use.

Claro Intelecto
Exhilarator

His first album for quite some time, Claro Intelecto’s Exhilarator is less linear in style than previous offerings. Those who loved the calm, melodic dub of the Mancunian’s early work such as Metanarrative will still find moments here that resemble it. But these thirteen tracks make time for other references as well; there are even tinges of IDM. Check that bass on ‘Guardian Angel’ that sounds like a carpenter sawing wood, or the percussion writhing beneath mournful leads on ‘Slither - The Way Home’. Solid production, as ever.

Miracle
The Strife Of Love In A Dream

Here we are with more sci-fi synth heavy beat work, though this time pitting arpeggiated synths against distant chants and odd ritualistic darkness. Welsh folkies The Gentle Good are proud of their Welshness and rightly so. The trio are made up of Jack Egglestone on drums, Callum Duggan on bass and singer Georgia Ruth. The EP is a combination of brand new material and outtakes from the sessions that produced their Welsh Music Prize winning album Ruins/Adfeilion. Alvarius B

Alvarius B is of course Alan Bishop, formerly of Sun City Girls and now going his own way. Angophora
Scenes

Angophora is the project of Max Santilli and Jacob Fugar, a lush response to the environment their influence, the Australian outback. VLMV
Stranded, Not Lost

London duo VLMV (pronounced ‘Alma’ - give over!) are Stranded, Not Lost. Suggest otherwise and you might be in for a long discussion on semantics. The pair have managed to hybridise the gloomy grandiosity and quirky-sad textuality of post-rock with the intimate sparseness of open-mic London singer-songwritery, resulting in atmospheric feels aplenty.

Refrigerator
High Desert Lows

27 years into their career, lo-fi noise band Refrigerator release their 11th album, High Desert Lows. Here, their noise-pop takes a bit of back seat in favour of the more laid-back strings, slide guitar and organ sound of previous albums such as Comedy Plus One. It’s certainly a significant drop in noise level from their last long player, Temple City. It does see the band still improvising and doing what they want to do regardless of pressure from others. Groundislava, from the same corner of town as DEEJ and Schlomo, surfed in on the wave of mainstream acceptance of nerddom in general and chiptune in particular. Deaf Wish
Deaf Wish

The Australian noise rock scene has been erupting with bands lately, and Melbourne's Deaf Wish are yet another band who open the curtain with dissonant guitar chords, snarling vocals and a strong dedication to rhythm that keeps the whole thing from falling apart.
