Michal Turtle feat. HOVE
Middle of the Road Less Travelled

80s electro tinkerer Michal Turtle has seen a renewed interest in his music in recent years, with Music From Memory reissuing a number of records from his back catalogue. Now Light Of Other Days sees him team up with guitarist Hove for this EP of gentle deep house and Balearic beat. There’s a nice dinky quality to the synths on Middle of the Road Less Travelled that recalls Dazion and Dip In The Pool.

Rasmus Hedlund
Intet Efter Allt

Finnish label Ljudverket make it into double-figures courtesy of another drop by Rasmus Hedlund. The four tunes of Intet Efter Allt (Nothing After All) are icy affairs that bring together big-room techno, acid-techno, dub-techno and a few other strands of that there techno. Sombre synths and minor-key pads abound whether Hedlund is operating at 120 bpm or 140 bpm. Imagine a moodier version of Bjarki.

The Amazing Singing Record

The Amazing Singing Record contains eight up-and-coming artists from Arizona. Each act contributes two songs. From the wonky country of Gene Tripp, the soothing analogue pop of Electrsad, lof-fi beauty of Amatuer Hour, The throat-ripping anthems of Cereal Milk, the overdriven riotous energy of The English Teeth, the reverb-drenched pop of Diners, the melodic indie of Nanami Ozone to the emotional indie-rock of Lil Bobby Jr. this will be of great interest to fans of US indie rock. D'Marc Cantu / Black Meteoric Star
Split Concept

Traxx’s Nation label is always a sure thing when it comes to odd variations on the blueprint of rugged hardware house music, and the pairing of D’Marc Cantu and Black Meteoric Star on this split release is a prime example. Cantu is actually in a relatively restrained mode here, burrowing into meditative arpeggios and scuffed beatdowns on “RDDS”, while Black Meteoric Star creates a jarring but alluring minimal wave abstraction on the live version of “Me And My Rhythm Box”.

Vanligt Folk
Palle Bondo

Baffling and haunting material from hardly-classifiable electro-creeps Vanligt Folk. Palle Bondo was written as a critique of the social stigmas of disability. In particular, it targets the notion of strangeness only being acceptable to society when it is clearly a chosen style of performance - with a “normal” agent beneath it. Fragments of familiar electro, dub and even industrial references make up these spacious productions. Nice early Autechre sample on the closing track!

Underspreche
Invito Alla Danza Part 2

Underspreche (who, despite the German name, are Italian) are releasing a full-length album on Optimo Trax, though it is cunningly disguised as a set of EPs by being released separately. Invito Alla Danza (this is part 2) is a vivid set of electronic movement material, four tracks full of original thinking and hard-bouncing grooves. 12” release.

Torn Hawk
Wormquest

Coming at ya from waaaaay over on the other side, Torn Hawk makes their debut outing on the Unknown To The Unknown label with Wormquest. Over the four tracks on this wax there will be some funky mechanical stuff, techno reinforced with guitars and a hefty dose of floor-filling insanity. 12” EP on UTTC.

Oh. My. God. For their third album Chicago trio To Destroy A City have unveiled a remarkable new trick. Vocals. Therefore their guitar driven opuses now have an extra human element. They hope you forgive them for this post-rock indiscretion and instead start to file them alongside other be-voiced post rock like Mogwai and the Album Leaf.

Ta-Ra
SunrayZ

French upstart—and Youtube sensation—Ta-Ra (formerly known as Ta-Ha) drops her debut vinyl release with ‘SunrayZ’, a mini LP showcasing her trademark ethereal R&B. She’s dark and brooding on ‘Kawasaki Ninja’, and chill and dreamy on ‘Death Ray’, but it’s her syrupy, molasses-soaked vocals that hold it all together seamlessly.

SSJJ and Devin Dare
APRON32

What could very well be the heaviest and most thudding sounding bass drum I've ever heard on an opening track, APRON32 is the release from SSJJ and Devin Dare on Apron. This two track split Vinyl 12" is a cracking addition to any 'sort-of' hip-hop record collection and is a genuinely decent attempt at the lo-fi vibe.

Transformation / Beau Wanzer
Kozmik / Orbit

This split 12” on Nation offshoot Kode plays two of techno’s more idiosyncratic voices off against each other. Transformation’s offering is a hypnotic slow-mo grind, full of faraway screeches and eerie percussion. Kind of like Kraftwerk’s ‘Autobahn’ if Kraftwerk had actually been Fuck Buttons and the record was cut at 33 when it was meant to be cut at 45. On the flip, L.I.E.S./Jealous God bloke Beau Wanzer gives us a track called ‘Oklahoma 3’, which sounds nothing like any of the music from Oklahoma. It actually sounds like a darkwave rendering of Hype Williams.

The Smoke Clears
Listen

There is a time when you need to chill out. With a name like The Smoke Clears, you had to expect it to happen at some point - Listen is a record filled with ambient soundscapes, with just enough techno to keep you listening, reminiscent of the infamous Selected Ambient Works by He-Who-Shall-Always-Be-Named-In-Relation-To-Anything-Halfway-Between-Ambient-And-IDM.

Silver Linings
Don't Make Tracks

Silver Linings have expanded to a three-piece since we last heard from them, which has added yet more funky-strength and depth to their modern electro-R&B sound. Don’t Make Tracks marks the band out as surely the freshest gang of funksters in all of Melbourne, so dig in. Vinyl edition on Wax Museum.

Out of Control

The new 12” on Ancient Methods Persephonic Sirens label is a split release between Sharplines, who contributes the title track Out Of Control and Nathaniel, who contributes three bangers. This is ideal for anyone who yearns for a bit of EBM infected, hard, heavy techno that will make every day feel like the weekend.

Scent
KIM EP

Scent are a three-piece from London who play what I can only describe as semi-ethereal indie-pop. Kim EP is their debut single. The band are keen to throw people like me, who try to tell the general public about them, off their scent (no pun intended) with weird and incomprehensible press releases. Anyway, they’re new to Wichita Recordings and they have a pretty good track record of signing successful bands, so why not give 'em a go? One sided 12" single, limited to 300 copies.

Ross 154
Fragments

From the mists of 1993 and Eevo-Lute, it's Ross 154 (Jochem Peteri / Newworldaquarium) with Fragments. 4 slices of deep, opaque, mysterious techno and soft ambient interludes. Recorded at Stefan Robbers' parents' house in Eindhoven, the guys channeled their formative influences: hip hop, Brit Soul and Duran Duran melancholy; while absorbing UK scene techno -- Kirk Degiorgio, B12 -- plus second-wave Detroit (Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin). A classic, then.

Le Officine Di Efesto (Donato Dozzy & Retina.it)
The Elements

Though their catalogue currently numbers under fifteen releases, Italy’s Spazio Disponibile are building a reputation as a voice to watch in European techno. They’ve scored another direct hit with The Elements, a five-track release from Le Officine Di Efesto (the collaborative project between Retina.it and label boss Donato Dozzy). The pair cover a lot of ground here, moving between slow and psychy DJ tools (‘Sulphur 16’), leftfield groove tracks (‘Plasma Hymn’) and far-out synth experimentation (‘Ode To Carbon’) with great control.

Anthony Linell
Alienation From Self

Northern Electronics (The Empire Line, Varg) with another cheery-as-a-tax-return EP. In fairness, they do tend to be pretty good, and the latest one from label mainstay Anthony Linell is no exception. Alienation From Self contains three pieces of needling, claustrophobic techno that will really sort wheat from chaff in the club.

Buttechno is such a cool name, although I did originally read the press release as 'a faint rumble is heard from behind the horizon Buttechno cheeks'. Clay Wilson’s Osho lands on The Bunker New York with great gusto, delivering total power-groove to the dancefloor. And the 12” doesn’t let up either, following Osho with three more Osho’s, courtesy of Derek Plaslaiko, who goes Oogly Boogly, Jason Loveland, who gives a Twisted Interpretation, and rrao, who edits. Deep after-hours ambience from Night Foundation, released underneath the guise of a monochrome piece of sleeve-art so grainy we might have dreamed it. Paul Messis
Songs of Our Times

Paul Messis regards himself as a 'garage punk unknown' but has been throwing out pysch-rock nuggets for the best part of a decade as a solo artist, with his band The Suburban Homes, as bass player with The Higher State and through his collaboration with The Sufis - The Market Squares. His new solo LP, Songs Of Our Times mixes the jangle of ‘60s garage with folk rock and folk punk delivering a record that displays what he is all about.

Paul Draper
Live at Scala

Once of Britpop middleweights Mansun, Paul Draper made a return to the fray in the mid-2010s with two EPs and a UK top-twenty album Spooky Action. This live record, recorded at London’s Scala (surprise surprise), sees Draper tear through his Jeff Buckley-ish solo stuff as well as wheeling out some of the old guns. Features nice versions of ‘Wide Open Space’ and ‘I Can Only Disappoint U’.

TINT
Ricochet Screen

An intriguing record of sound collages from New York artist TINT here. Ricochet Screen builds its compositions up from found sounds and field recordings, often of general chit chat. Over this TINT puts anything from distorted bass guitar (‘Purr XYZ’) to beautiful, Debussy-esque piano improvisations (‘Earth D423’). It’s not unlike the best bit of Yves Tumor’s repertoire. This LP is out via Root Strata (Richard Youngs, Grouper).

Theo Parrish
Gentrified Love Part 4

Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature may be turning twenty this year, but that doesn’t mean that the Detroit legend is resting on his laurels. Rather, the fourth instalment of his Gentrified Love series sees Parrish looking to improve on past glories. A-side ‘Leave The Funk To Us’, for instance, appeared in truncated form on Gentrified Love 2. This full version, featuring Amp Fiddler, John Douglas and Ideeyah, is a classic TP funky stepper. The B-side is an update of a track by Paul Randolph & Kathy Kosins which appeared on 2017’s Brownswood Bubblers compilation.

Vicktor Taiwò
Joy Comes In Spirit

Vicktor Taiwò attempts to combine twin loves of pop music and experimental on a record of inner belief and self-actualisation. His debut, Joy Comes in Spirit, gambles on its bedrock of singer-songwriter soul with amorphous deviations. Tunes stretch and expand, taking on retro game music, rap and 808s-era Kanye in its fetch quest for introspection.

LOR
Mystery To The Viewer EP

Warm drop this four-track EP from Northern Ireland’s Lunar Orbit Rendezvous aka LOR. Like fellow Belfast native Space Dimension Controller, LOR’s brand of techno has a nice cosmic tinge to it. However, on Mystery To The Viewer, the aesthetic is more calculated than the full-blown Detroit worship of SDC. Only on booming closer ‘White Light’ does LOR really let rip. Earlier in the EP the title track and ‘In This Detail’ combine minimal grooves with expressive synth pads, while ‘Oriole’ has a bit of an acid tang.

Model 500
No UFO's Remixes

Juan Atkins’ calling card to extraterrestrial life sounds as vital now as it did back in ’85, but the key building block in what is now called techno has never received a modern re-rub. That all changes as second generation Detroit hero Moodymann turns in something of a cover version of the legendary electro jam while Swiss mnml ringmaster Luciano taps up the clicky, percussive vibe that he was pushing in Ibiza ten years ago by way of a remix.

Levon Vincent
NS-21

Lord of wax Levon Vincent offers two buzzing cuts of who knows what. I would predict something deep and minimal, but these ones are being described as "razor-sharp", which could well mean we're in for something a little more confrontational, to suit him seemingly weaponising his vinyl with a swing of the arm on that front cover. Careful, Levon!

Bjork
Arisen My Senses (Jlin, Lanark Artefax, Kelly Lee Owens Remixes)

Promising release from up-and-coming Icelandic artist Björk. One of the standouts of Utopia, ‘Arisen My Senses’ - a co-production with Arca - opens that LP with what can only be described as cautious bombast. Emerging from the love lockdown that was Vulnicura, ‘Arisen My Senses’ is the sound of dawn after a dark night of the soul. This EP comes fleshed out with weapons-grade remixes from Lanark Artefax, Jlin and Kelly Lee Owens.

Ingrid Goes West (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Ah yes, Ingrid Goes West. It's a [scrolls down Wikipedia page to critical reception] critically acclaimed movie with favorable reviews. A film about [scrolls back up to start of Wikipedia page] someone moving to LA to hang out with someone they follow on Instagram, it sounds to me an incredibly relatable experience, and is soundtracked by some suitably idealistic dance hits, road trippin' to soul, new wave and more. Can, Islands and Bobby Oroza are three artists that exist on this soundtrack.

Furfriend
Endless September

This is Furfriend's debut album out on UK based electro/techno/experimental record label Perc Trax. Furfriend are industrial techno art-rock duo Dingo Tush and Das Uberdog. Refreshingly odd and full of dark humour, Furfriend are not like other techno artists. 'Endless September' offers a combination of political satire and dark carnal body horror/celebration that manages not to take itself too seriously whilst still being quite serious. In their own words, "Furfriend is everything you never dared to sex about".

Zomby
Mercury’s Rainbow

Modern Love finally issue Zomby's Mercury Beats, his attempt at re-imagining Wiley's Eskibeat series of releases. Made a while ago while his body clock was all out of whack, the pieces are methodical and rhythmic takes on grime that if released at the time may have shifted the course of grime. We think that is what the press release is saying but you can never be sure.

EYE
005

Two flips of the same tune here on the secretive EYE’s fifth single, and a fine track it is too. There’s something of Hercules and Love Affair’s downtempo cuts here in the way the horns dance around a languid, soulful vocal, and the boozy groove comes off like a bedroom pop D’Angelo. Dustin Wong + Takako Minekawa + Good Willsmith
Exit Future Heart

I for one am extremely excited about this. Dustin Wong is the guitar knotter and looper known, in addition to his past service in noise rock band Ponytail, for making majestic records out of simple, riffed ideas. The ecstasy of his music will here be paired with noise pranksters Good Willsmith, who made an incredible, euphorically harsh record for Umor in Things Our Bodies Used to Have, along with the Casio tones of Takako Minekawa. An instant purchase for all the leftfields amongst you.

Örvar Smárason
Light Is Liquid

Twenty years after co-founding múm back in 1997, Örvar Smárason at last takes a dip solo with the rather trippily-titled Light is Liquid. Órvar’s touch in múm is traceable in the brittle melancholy, twee cuteness and rattling early 2000s bedroom electronica beats of these songs - especially the two featuring Sillas. But the album also reaches further into graceful synthpop territory.

Michal Turtle
Return To Jeka

Dutch imprint Music From Memory gather eight tracks from the archives of Michal Turtle. 'Return To Jeka' is the label's third release in collaboration with the English artist. Previously, they raided his tapes for the 'Are You Psychic?' EP and 'Phantoms Of Dreamland' 2LP. Like those records, this rewinds back to the 80s and features eight previously unheard cuts of obscure Britsh synth music, produced between 1983 and 1985. We can hear his background in jazz and classical, and even the funk and dub influences that run through this electro-ambient-tropical doozy.

Ascion
Joy Dexon Club

This new release from Repitch Recordings co-bossman Ascion is described as a “mini LP”, as opposed to an EP. I can see why, as Joy Dexon Club’s six tracks have more of a narrative through-line than you’d expect from just a 12”. This is fast-blasting stuff, densely constructed acidic techno that grabs you and doesn’t let go. On Repitch.

D.K.

Antinote’s resident house music romancer D.K. is back with a new five track EP that furthers his smooth and sexy drift into 80s tinged splendour, where the island breeze is gentle and the sun sets slow. Fossil Aerosol Mining Project
August 53rd

Another mystery missive from The Fossil Aerosol Mining Project, this one apparently alluding to previous release The Day 1982 Contaminated 1971, possibly by containing different treatments of some of the same original materials. Although with this level of looped-tapes and obscuring treatments, I wouldn’t sweat it: just sink into the deep crackling ambient murk. Released by The Helen Scarsdale Agency.

Chris Brann
Deep Fall

A seminal '90s deep house record gets reissued here by its original home of Peacefrog (Moodymann, Little Dragon). By 1997 Chris Brann had already received acclaim for his work as one third of Wamdue Kids, but Deep Fall sees the producer finding his own way and his own sound. The nine tracks here are the deepest of the deep, with mellow synth pads and sultry vocals keeping watch over rigid, slightly tech-house-flavoured drum tracking.

Fringe White EP

Two from the Timedance stable repress their first collaborative EP, one that dropped way back in the mists of 2016. With its thick chunks of sub bass, skittish lead lines and Eski-meets-Berghain drum programming, Fringe White is one of the very best records to have emerged from the excellent West Country techno scene.

Sued 19

Sued 19 comes typically out of the blue, but that’s the way the Berlin-based label roll. This release features four tracks, two by SVN and two by fellow Berlin producer SW. The pair are regulars on the label. This slab of wax contains blissful techno that harks back to 1990s Detroit. 12” on SUED.

Acid Bowie
Acid Bowie

For those of you who like an element of lucky dip to your record buying, look no further. We are told this is called Acid Bowie, but we have very little information about this enigmatic 8-track white label release. The artist remains a mystery but there are also claims that this is an unheard Ziggy Stardust album recorded following a trip to space, whatever that means! Take from that what you will, but I imagine the words ‘acid’ and ‘trip’ are worth noting.

Egyptrixx
Pure, Beyond Reproach

Egyptrixx is the kind of producer who will let you just dance one moment and then blast you with a fine-grain blitz of heavy chewy digital textures the next. Not that this is an antagonistic record: every move that Pure, Beyond Reproach makes is a calculated one that had a positive effect on the listener. Lots to discover within this record. The Room Below
Healing Scaphoids

The Room Below titled this lovely little EP after an unfortunate pair of London cycling injuries. Healing Scaphoids was thus created during a period of recovery, which lends a thoughtful, slightly wonky flavour to these tracks that would make them an interesting addition to any club set. 12” on Don’t Be Afraid.

Hearts Hearts
Goods / Gods

Second album from fidgety Austrians Hearts Hearts. You may have noticed their penchant for forward slashes which for them represents a kind of freedom. Well here we have an album that is somewhere nearer the experimental end of pop / rock. In the end all I can do is leave you with the decision to buy / don't.

First faithful reissue of the soundtrack to Nicolas Roeg's clunkily named A Venezia Un Dicembre Rosso Shocking. Though no way near as well known as big man Ennio Morricone (how could he be?), Pino Donaggio deserves to be spoken of alongside him for being able to capture the specific mood of Venice.

Turbatrix

“Ok then, back to basics/Grab your shell-toes and Arundel’s Turbatrix.” Who’d ever have thought that Robbie Williams would have liked his techno served up by the kooks at Sheffield’s Computer Club and shrouded in the sort of heady, claustrophobic ambiences you’d tend to associate with an Ostgut Ton release? Still, you heard the man. Take both pills. F*ck the matrix.

Thomas Andrew Doyle
Incineration Ceremony

Thomas Andrew Doyle is best known as the gigantic frontman from Sub Pop grunge pioneers, Tad. He did, however, study classical and jazz music at university, so what may seem like a surprising turn, is actually him going back to his roots. Incineration Ceremony is modern classical music from the deepest recesses of his mind. RIYL John Carpenter.

Secret State
Zero Zero One

The bloops and bleeps and synths don't stop. Here is the latest release on the always consistent CPU records and the mysterious Secret State makes repetitive and harsh bleep music that you may want to find in a dank underground club. Some warmth appears in the form of soft synths and electro funk grooves so it's not all bang bang. quite soulful in places.

Kensington Gore
Hexagon

Stephen Wood and Scott Gubbels make up Kensington Gore, a duo who dabble in driving electronics, spacey soundscapes and motorik propulsion. Hexagon is dark and has an oppressive terror brought about by stabbing synth work, however, this is matched by a lightness of touch, production-wise, and a certain melodic nouse. Thurston Moore is among their celebrity fans. LP only on More Than Human.

Man Duo
Orbit

Squelchy pop elegance from Man Duo, whose versatile, party trick approach to electronica is lightly informed by their previous work together as Amateurs de Vérité -- which tinged their synthwork with psych folk. The duo's follow-up, Orbit, can be light and washy, hard industrial and even throw-down house, twisting and turning into a meandering dance record that bangs before going ethereal. Vocals are cooed in English, Finnish and Italian, the record sounding collaged amidst its constant forward momentum.

Studio Mule
Carnaval feat. Miyako Kouda

Clearly no longer content with being one of the most consistently excellent house labels of the last decade, Mule Musiq branch out with this mysterious new Studio Mule project. Not much is known about the group’s membership - our guess is that MM boss Toshiya Kawasaki might have something to do with it. However, there are three things that we can say for sure: 1) ‘Carnaval’ is a cover of a Taeko Ohnuki’s classic. 2) This version features vocals from Dip In The Pool’s Miyako Kouda. 3) Both edits of the track here are perky acid/disco jams that will bring a smile to your face.

Respuesta Alternativa
Grata Compania

Jesus Ma Catalana (what a name) cut these five tracks as Respuesta Alternativa back in the early 80s. Loading up his synths and drum machines, he got other musicians to solo over the top of them and create this odd record. Weirdo-lounge jazz meets synth-pop, that sort of thing. Weather Report if they were a one-man bedroom project. Reissued by Left Ear Records.

Four track techno EP from Birmingham's Jayson Wynters. Wynter's techno darts and weaves, it knows when to sprint and when to take a break. Industrial Sabotage is an apt name then, it breaks up the repetition and monotony in order to aim for something higher. Released on the lovely Don't Be Afraid.

Other Lands
Pattern Transform

Oh here we go, here's a colourful thing, one foot in sumptuous tropical island-house, another in quirky downbeat electronica. Willie Graff & Darren Eboli
The Tribeca Tapes

Denmark’s Music For Dreams have done a nice line in blissful post-Balearia for just shy of two decades now. Their latest release, an EP from Willie Graff & Darren Eboli, is no exception. The Tribeca Tapes is as technicolour as its artwork. Tracks like ‘First Light’ and ‘Moon Tan’ nod to the recent Talaboman record with their low-slung minor-key grooves, while ‘Love Flight’ and ‘Second Sun’ are breezier affairs. Will appeal to anyone who enjoys the output of labels like Beats In Space or Second Circle.

Optimo call time on their successful Optimo Trax offshoot at the thirty-third release. The EP in question, courtesy of Montreal’s Solitary Dancer, is also one of the more unusual pressings in the series. The three tracks on In The Name Of The Mother are all reverb-fugged edge-of-the-dancefloor numbers that by turns recall The Orb (‘Heroine Dub’), Inga Copeland (‘La Donna’) and Suicideyear (‘Lady Pimp’).

Groundislava, from the same corner of town as DEEJ and Schlomo, surfed in on the wave of mainstream acceptance of nerddom in general and chiptune in particular.
