Osbourne
Fools

Spectral Sound, sister label of Ghostly International (Mark E, Matthew Dear), bring Osbourne back into the fold for their latest drop. Fools is the first thing that the one born Todd Osbourn has dropped on Ghostly since 2013’s Joe Goddard collaboration ‘Hold Up'. However, it’s clear from these tunes that the intervening years haven’t robbed him of his knack for crafting buoyant, funky leftfield house jams.

Tourist Kid
Crude Tracer

Aussie upstart Tourist Kid is here with his first release for Melody As Truth, a stuttering digital romp that takes in serene, glassy ambience, delicate piano and fetishistic instrumentation. It's a beautiful record; spacious, nuanced and heart-wrenching, complete with broken vocals and plaintive, delicate pulses.

Major Murphy
Lafayette EP

A selection of bedroom recordings made by Major Murphy while they were still figuring what exactly Major Murphy was going to be. The Lafayette EP, named for the house which contained said bedroom, shows a more gentle and less assured side of the band. A fascinating document for anyone who enjoyed their debut No. 1.

Myriam Bleau
Lumens & Profits

Myriam Bleau brings the approaches of an experimental artist to bear on the materials of bass music electronics, spinning these elements together into hypnotising structures on Lumens & Profits. Lots of delicious moments where different crystalline synth lines or rhythmic stutter-planes fall in and out of overlap. Stimulating stuff on Where To Now?

Horror Section
Horror Section

My mind is blank when I read 'grindhouse cinema inspired punk-rock'. Honestly, nothing. If you're like me and your mind is also completely and utterly void of what this kinda' clutching-at-straws genre could be, then maybe we should all listen to Horror Section's self titled debut release and join the other 1990 Horror Section fans on Facebook and dance around to this record. Kathryn Joseph
Weight / Cold

Kathryn Joseph’s LP from when i wake the want is stole the show in 2018. An album of stormy singer-songwriter fare capped by Joseph’s extraordinary voice, from when i wake the want is ended the year in more than a few ‘Best Of’ lists. Now album highlight ‘Weight’ is getting a single release. The swelling piano ballad - part Björk, part Mogwai - still sounds potent in isolation. ‘Weight’ comes backed here by the spare, Thom Yorke-esque ‘Cold’.

Mick's Jaguar
Fame and Fortune

Formed as a drunken Rolling Stones covers band (hence the name I assume) Mick's Jaguar are aiming to bring back some rock and roll to the streets of New York. They are as dirty, grimy and presumably rat infested and self describe their sound as 'the night AC/DC played CBGBs.  Expect big riffs. Expect ROCK.

Matt Whitehead & No Data Available present Manor House Boys
Temple Of Set EP

Acid fiend Matt Whitehead teams up with No Data Available for an EP of Detroit-indebted club fodder under the Manor House Boys tag. The best of the Motor City’s techno, house and electro sounds are channelled by the quartet of tracks on Temple Of Set. Opener ‘Full Resonance’ and closer ‘Panic In Flat 13’ are straight 303 wig-outs, while ‘Sahara’ and the title track bulk things out with some big-room beats. Unsurprisingly, this one’s out via Super Rhythm Trax.

The Mover
Final Sickness

The Mover apparently survived his Final Sickness in 1993, as the music is still here with us in 2019. Planet Phuture are doing us all a favour here with a reissue with this heavy classic, which is crammed with drum machines and synth details as far as you can here. Techno with industrial and electro leanings, you’ll surely want to hear Final Sickness again. The Mover is, of course, Marc Arcardipane real name Marc Trauner - legendary German techno producer and founder of Planet Core Productions, Dance Ecstasy 2001 etc.

Russell E. L. Butler
Petty

Four tracks on twelve inches of wax, from Bermuda artist Russell E.L. Butler. Petty is probably the closest that Butler has yet come to real floor-filling techno, though don’t worry, there are still plenty of sonic and conceptual details to revel in from this experimental producer. 12” EP on Spectral.

Pete’s influence has found its way to the Berlin dance scene through his other job as an employee of the Hard Wax record store and as one of the DJs contributing to the Wax Treatment Party series, as well has his own releases and DJ sets where he draws from dubstep, grime, house and techno, adding a few twists along the way. 12" 5-track EP on Ostgut Ton.

Clarence Séti
Jungle Quest

We don’t know much about this material that Clarence Seti put together in 1991, partly because it was only ever a demo CD. But all that matters is the music, these twelve tracks that we are now able to hear. Jungle Quest will certainly require you to have a taste for digital keyboards, and Seti really lays into his collection here, but this will charm many. Out on Lily Record.

Ailie Ormston
The Sedate

Ailie Ormston is back, though not quite as you knew her. The affable, wry dreariness of her band ******** gives way on this solo effort to something harder, more minimal and even *gulp* deconstructive. Fortunately, Ailie doesn’t take this stuff as seriously as many other musicians seem to and the result is crucially as entertaining as it is enlightening. Apparently all done with just one drum machine and one synth, and all.

Montevideo
Temperplane

Indie-poppers Montevideo (not from Uruguay, but from Belgium) delivering their third full-length album after a six year silence. Carson McHone
Carousel

Carson McHone is, obviously, an alt-country artist. Her new album Carousel is an eleven track set of good stuff, with a bit of modern (sixties) influences in there along with the honk and the tonk. If you are doing country, you’ve got to do it right, and Carson has the songwriting and the vocal chops to pull it off with style. Out on Loose.

Ohtis
Runnin

Ohtis are a three-piece band who hail from Illinois and play country-tinged, dusty Americana. Their lyrics come from the Josh T. Pearson school of raconteurism whilst their music draws comparisons to Wilco’s contemplative material and Phosphorescent with its laid-back strums and emotive pedal steel. Runnin’ is their latest single. 7” on Full Time Hobby.

Tender are James Cullen (don’t worry, I said Cullen, not Corden) and Dan Cobb, a London duo who make mid-fi R&B. Modeselektor
I Am Your God / Bronko

In the run up to their next album Modeselektor have given the DJs a head start with the release of I Am Your God / Bronko on 12". The press release describes them as "abysmal" but I'm guessing they don't mean in the bad way. This is tough industrial techno built from the sort of crisp sounds we've all come to expect from the German duo.

Michael Hoenig
The Blob (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Although it’s essentially about an animate piece of strawberry jam, the 1958 original gave me quite the nightmares as a child. Here’s the soundtrack to the even-creepier 1988 remake of The Blob by Michael Hoenig. Hoenig went for something a little more sober than the original’s bouncy theme song, whose lyrics included: “Beware of the Blob - it creeps and leaps and glides and slides across the floor, right through the door…”. Hoenig chose wisely.

ETXC004

Eomac has had a busy 2018. As well as dropping his Reconnect LP and the accompanying Resist All Dogma EP on his own Eotrax imprint he has had a part in four collaborative records for his ETXC series. Following on from unions with Paula Temple, Sean Carpio and Demian Licht we now have the fruits of his labour alongside Kamikaze Space Programme. ETXC004’s ‘Environment 1’ revolves around a lopsided techno locked groove, while ‘Environment 2’ is full of hissing synth drones.

Edgar Wappenhalter
s/t

Steve Marreyt is back with a self-titled LP, under his Edgar Wappenhalter handle. His first proper release in yonks (2010) -- unless you count the stupidly small batches of cassettes from a year or two ago -- arrives with three long and fully formed drone-folk sound-collages. Utilising mainly vocals and samples, the first side comprises a voice-only lamentation in dedication to the sadly passed Dutch artist Herman Bisschop. The flip is sample-heavy, layered and intense yet crystal clear. LP on Morc, in a limited edition of 150 only, in a screen-printed sleeve.

François Dufrêne

Life In Sodom
The Stains / Alessandro Adriani Remix

As Mannequin Records closes in on 100 releases Alessandro Adriani’s label dips its toe into the reissues market. This one is a 1991 single from Goth-wave legends Life In Sodom. Both versions of ‘The Stains’ are gloriously vampiric combinations of darkwave, techno and industrial rock. The same applies to 1992 cut ‘Phantasmagoria’ which crops up on the B-side. Label boss Adriani provides a club edit of ‘The Stains’ to round the EP out.

Some techno-ass techno here from Discrete Circuit and Mark Broom. The pair have crossed paths before, but MBDC is the first time that they produced a body of work together. Bryce Hackford

Style-roving New York producer Bryce Hackford is here with a EP on Youth. With previous work tracing from synthpop to ambient, this here trio of new tunes is all rather wonky, improvised lo-fi house. 48 Cameras are a musical collective spread throughout Belgium, UK and Netherlands. Their music is varied and due to the way they work, some members have never even met each other. This has been going on since 1984. Martyn Bates of Eyeless in Gaza, Andy Cairns of Therapy? and Swans Michael Gira have all played their part in the project in the past. Chosen Songs looks like it may be a retrospective of their best moments. LP on Stroom.

Carcass Identity
Carcass Identity EP

Italian label Random Numbers (Mudwise, Marco Unzip) hit a dozen releases with a strange EP from Carcass Identity. This Belgian-based duo turn in four tunes of queasy, often hostile techno on Carcass Identity EP. The likes of ‘Reflexion Ocean’ and ‘Narrenschiff’ are dub-heavy without really being dub techno. There’s a little of Pablo’s Eye and Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement to this one.

NHK yx Koyxen / Kohei Matsunaga & Masayuki Imanishi
Self Split EP

I really admire Kouhei Matsunaga’s dedication to carving out multiple different artistic identities for himself, and I admire even more so his obtuse decision here to mash those identities back together again. The Self Split EP credits Kouhei alongside Speedy K and NHK yx koyxen, both of whom are also himself: only Masayuki Imanishi is an actual different person. The four tracks are suitably wild and enticing, whoever made them. Diagonal 12”

Matthias Puech
Alpestres

Matthias Puech is a builder of modular synths, and also a user of those synths, in this case creating an abstract electronic soundscape that also evokes in some way an Alpine hike. Alpestres actually has a lot of sonic focus and narrative drive for a modular synth record, with evocative titles in various European languages to help the listener off on their sonic trip up the mountain.

Birth

Vibrant Music continue to release music that is vibrant with Birth, an album by Soluce. That’s the long-time-coming collaboration between Konstantinos Soublis (Fluxion) and Savvas Ystatis (Omicron in the 90s), who are not only firm old friends but neighbours too! They put their combined skills to great use here, producing resonant, minimal and lush ambient techno.

Rings Around Saturn

Melbourne techno producer Rory McPike is back as Rings Around Saturn. His new, self-titled album flows with a range of abstract and dance-floor styles. McPike stylishly applies his considerable talents to 11 tracks here, delivering fizzing, pulsating new wave techno and imposing abstract electronics on a double-pack LP. 300 copies only. Marc Romboy & Petar Dundov
Dimension D EP

Yer boys Marc Romboy & Petar Dundov return to Systematic (Steve Lawler, Will Saul) with their second joint EP of 2018. Dimension D works the same channels as its predecessor Caper Tran. Both the title track and ‘Meteor Shower’ are the sort of melodious big-room tech-house tunes that KiNK - another former collaborator of Romboy’s - would be proud of.

Capital Punishment
This Is Capital Punishment

Right, this is getting ridiculous. It was a pretty far fetched idea for us to expect to believe that the earlier Capital Punishment re-issue was made 35 years ago by an all future star line up including Ben Stiller. Now we are told that the quartet including Supreme Court Justice judge Peter Swann, professor Peter Zusi, actor/TV 'funny' man Ben Stiller and Kriss Roebling, whose family built the Brooklyn Bridge have gone back into the studio to make new material.  You expect us to believe this?

Kev Brown
Minneapolis

Prolific producer Kev Brown turns his attention to the sounds of Minneapolis on his latest LP. The Minnesota city is best-known as the home of Prince, and Brown certainly injects a nice wedge of The Artist Formerly Known As's raunchy funk into these post-Dilla instrumentals. We challenge you to not shake your hips to these party-starting joints. This one's a Black Friday edish.

J. Albert
Small Room EP

Super-prolific techno footmover J. Albert comes back for another 2016 12", this time channeling dusty inner city beats for a good 4 tracks. Judging by the quality of A2 cut 'Ting Waan', this will be stomping, keeping bodies warm and limber deep into the winter nights and beyond. While he's just got things moving with his own Exotic Dance label, this one comes out on Black Opal. Fair's fair in the realm of the thunk.

Opal Tapes offshoot Black Opal (Metrist, J Albert) drop an excellent debut EP from Denmark’s Lyra Valenza. The duo of Hjalte and Severin’s Jens Konrad turn in four tracks of rave hyperrealism on Scan, Deliver. Numbers like ‘Reality Blizz’ enmesh the post-trance explorations of Lorenzo Senni with Special Request’s wildside junglism. We look forward to hearing more from this lot.

Same Waves
Algorithm of Desire

‘Algorithm of Desire’ by Same Waves is an exercise in oddball electronic pop, both restrained and open-ended. Same Waves are a collaboration between Lindsay Anderson (L’ALTRA) and John Hughes, together making a sound of hushed eccentricity, welcome to scrapes of violin, plonking synths, and at times almost whispered vocals. The LP - which features contributions from the likes of Bill MacKay and Macie Stewart - is released by the Flau label.

Gregor
Silver Drop

Aussie youngster, Gregor, likes to make an eccentric brand of pop music. On his debut, Silver Drop he takes his cues from Talking Heads, Durutti Column and Arthur Russell. Devon Church

Brooklyn Winnipegger Devon Church, fresh out of a dissolved marriage and creative partnership (Exitmusic) with Aleksa Palladino, bounces back with solo album We Are Inextricable on same old label Felte. Simpering Southern glam-rock warbler Kyle Craft returns to Sub Pop with a second diner jukebox-ready long player, Full Circle Nightmare. Painstakingly faithful to the seediest, most regretful and wistful sentiments of the genre, the music sounds precisely as Kyle looks: as if generated by some sort of Americana algorithm. London Modular Alliance
Wireless

London Modular Alliance is a silly name, but at least it’s factually watertight. The group formed around the London synth emporium London Modular, and all of their tracks are born from hardware jams. It’ll come as no surprise that the cuts on Wireless are dense, slightly sinister numbers that sound very expensive. Will appeal to people who’ve been enjoying anything that CPU have done of late.

Indifferent Dance Centre
Flight & Pursuit

The second release on Outer Reaches is a rare nugget of ‘80s post-punk. Indifferent Dance Centre put out one record, 1981 single Flight & Pursuit, during their time together. Recorded in a church hall in Chichester, the group’s style is an ethereal, tranquillised take on the moody sounds of Joy Division and The Durutti Column. The title track, with its ‘Come As You Are’ bassline and floaty vocals, prefigures the work of the much-missed High Places. A worthy reissue.

Various (General Ludd, Herva, Nene H, Altered Natives)
DBA039.5

The excellent Don’t Be Afraid return with another EP of weapons-grade club tackle for their .5 series. A roster of General Ludd, Herva, Nene H and Altered Natives serve up techno four ways here. Ludd and Herva’s A-sides are dubby shapeshifters not dissimilar to the soundsystem stylings of labels like Idle Hands and Livity Sound. On the flip, H and Altered Natives forego subtlety altogether - ‘Retto’ and ‘Dancing Girl’ will tear the dancefloor a new one.

Majetic
Club Dread

Justin Majetich has previously released on Winspear Records (The Lemon Twigs, The Pills) as CARE, but this LP sees him adopt a new moniker. The Majetic sound certainly alludes to club music on Club Dread, but these tracks are neither dancefloor fodder or the deconstructionism of someone like Ziur. Rather, what we have here are intersections of Perfume Genius/How To Dress Well-style queer pop and the freighted maximalism you sometimes find bolting out of the LuckyMe stable.

Beneath
Cloudy

A14 is a highly-promising offshoot of Blackest Ever Black that has already fronted releases by Rhythmic Theory and Pessimist. They keep up the good work on their fourth drop, a set of proper soundsystem muck from the consistently brilliant Beneath. ‘Cloudy’ fronts a wiggling bassline and stuttering drums in a manner that brings to mind a souped-up version of Pearson Sound’s ‘Earwig’. The Air Texture series reaches volume six and for the occasion drafts in Steffi and Martyn for another double-CD's worth of previously unreleased gems. Consider the calibre of the selectors -- famous both for their individual spins on house and techno -- and then consider the brief as per usual: leftfield selections, ambience aplenty and techno in name only, too widescreen perhaps to be limited to the dance-floor. 26 tracks, including appearances by: dBridge, Shed, FaltyDL, As One, KiNK and of course, Steffi and Martyn themselves.
