Throwing Shade
Fate Xclusive EP

A sparkly, reverby record from upcoming London producer Throwing Shade. The Fate Xclusive EP touches down in a few different territories: the single ‘Honeytrap’s odd-pop contains strains of 90’s trip-hop, contemporary postmodern electronics, and a strikingly direct vocal performance. 12” on No Pain In Pop.

Arthur's Landing

Arthur’s Landing is the name given to this project in which songs by the belived Arthur Russell are mixed and remixed by a bevy of talent. In the case of Second Thoughts we have Alkino, Bob Blank, Virgin Magnetic Material and several others. LP version is split across two parts, on Buddhist Army.

Regal Degal
Not Now

Not Now is the second record from Brooklyn’s Regal Degal, produced with Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear. Regal Degal operate firmly within the non-temporal realm of popular culture, where sonic elements from any and all eras are fair game, so that Not Now is hard to pin to any now or any then. On Terrible Records.

Slow Steve
Steps

6 Track EP, available on 12” vinyl or CD from Morr Music. Rémi Letournelle is Slow Steve. With lofi, fuzzy synthesizers, clanky distorted percussion and everything lovingly understated, you can see why they draw comparisons to Ariel Pink or Air. Like a pop song by Moby, there is something inherently sad in all of it as well.

JM Airis
Wild Birds

JM Airis has reportedly laboured over Wild Birds for ages, and the man clearly has an excellent attention to detail: every little element here is spaced just right in relation to every other element. The consequences are a sort of melancholy folk updated with touches of synth and a city attitude. Double LP on Totally Gross National Product.

Featuring members of both World of Twist and Earl Brutus, The Pre New have captured a place in our hearts with their minimalistic and sardonic electronic music. IMD // RSJ / JF // CF
BROS008

The Brothers label / series continues into its eighth edition, pairing producers together in a fraternal way. IMD // RSJ / JF // CF translates to Eomac and Rory St John on one side of the 12”, and Joe Farr and Witch on the other, each pair producing a great tune for you to move too. The A side grooves where the B side attacks: very nice.

Having worked through an internship-like period of low-profile, lo-fi cassette and bandcamp releases, Shana Falana is finally ready to follow up her 2011 EP with a full length, on the Team Love label. On Set Your Lightning Fire Free, big sweeping dream-guitars and waves of vocals make for a grand artistic statement.

Breakfast In Fur
Flyaway Garden

Following their first, eponymously titled EP, consisting of jangly guitar, a selection of childrens toys and the soft, gently whispered vocals of Kaitlin Van Pelt, Breakfast In Fur’s latest release ‘Flyaway Garden’ sees what began as a recording project between Dan Wolfe and Kaitlin Van Pelt move into more assertive, punk rock territory experimenting in psychedelic rock with some elements of their more atmospheric, pastoral folk origins.

Mylets
Arizona

‘Arizona’ is the debut album release from Mylets aka Henry Kohen, a child genius, multi instrumentalist who became the youngest artist ever to be signed to LA based record label/ management company Sargent House. In spite of the complicated arrangement of Mylets one man orchestra, the songs are catchy, infectious pop songs at heart, realised through layers of symphonic vocal and guitar harmonies.

From the superhappy intro-song-to-the-Community-tv-series about suicide, Matt and Kim have now arrived at a cheerful pop sound with some cozy trap influences somehow meshed in comfortably. New Glow has got a new sound going for the duo, while still keeping in touch with their old joy. Also, who could say no to such happy bum-shaking as Kim's in their latest video?

Girls In Hawaii
Hello Strange

Belgian indie pop act Girls In Hawaii do the opposite of Bob Dylan at Newport, ditching the electric jangle pop for something purer and more acoustic. Revising their work here with new arrangements that are equal parts sparse and delicate, 'Hello Strange' is a surprisingly versatile release from a band who's sound has been well worn.

Oh! Pears
Wild Part of the World

At the very least, Oh! Pears win the prize for best use of a mid-sentence exclamation mark since Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Aside from that, they share nothing with those Canadian naysayers, making delicate and whimsical chamber pop based around the crafty songwriting of Corey Duncan. On 'Wild Part of the World', he mixes contemporary folk pop with modern twists on ye olden times, taking on thirteenth century traditional in "Natasha", and adapting a Tchaikovsky symphony in his own style. Neutral Milk Hotel meets BBC Radio 3, and they have a good time together.

Tairiq & Garfield
Childhood Swing

The debut release from twin brothers Tairiq & Garfield is a big production seemingly always in flux. Children to an R&B group father and a rapping mother they’ve got quite the headstart. The Dough Rollers
Gone Baby Gone

The days get dark on the road, and while the music of the Dough Rollers may have started with the most simple of intentions -- tribute the great traditions of American folk, rock and soul -- their sound slowly became warped by experience, turning into something more intricate that subtly wove together each of their influences. Their new 12", Gone Baby Gone, is dedicated to the rockin' past of their treasured United States.

The Chemistry Experiment
Gongs Played By Voice

Pastoral prog from Nottingham-based quintet The Chemistry Experiment. Rather than literally enacting its title, Gongs Played By Voices adheres to the British prog tradition of discussing nature and the seasons with liberal use of fantastical lyrics and surreal storytelling. Actual gongs played by voices would’ve been great too but considering the band’s troubled journey towards the difficult second album it’s certainly a fine effort. Out on CD and vinyl LP from Fortuna POP!.

Jack Ruby
Jack Ruby - Volume 2

Jack Ruby were one of the missing links between Fun House era Stooges and the eventual No Wave of the late 70s. They basically sound like what would happen if J.G Ballard started a proto-punk band; electronic noise throughout with dirty rock n' roll. This is the 2nd volume of LP reissues which is the more noisy and experimental side of the band, and it features an appearance by free jazz sax player Pete van Riper and some electric viola reminiscent of some of the Velvet Underground's most dissident work. Limited edition of just 600 copies, it also includes a download card.

Shivum Sharma

Produced by the geezer (Liam Howe) who did the recent FKA Twigs killer and some Tom Vek stuff, All These Years is the EP follow up to Shivum Sharma’s debut album Follow. It’s some good old angsty electro indie pop in the vein of vomitingly dull London Grammar. Limited to 300 10” vinyl.

Bad History Month / Dust From 1000 Years
Famous Cigarettes

Their name must be hip, because it’s ironic: Dust from a 1000 Years doesn’t sound old at all, but rather fresh. Which is really just a crazy coincidence because it’s not a Bad History Month at all, seeing as it brought us this swell split EP! Which, I might add, is limited to 308 (curious number right) copies in colors and everything!

Tsembla
Terror & Healing

Marja Johansson of Kemiallset Ystävät creates a record of abstracted and hard-wired beauty, bringing together a dense palate of sounds around motifs that circle inwards and then outwards, samples that get cut and fucked up, and a lot of electronic configuration. If "Animal Negatives" is anything to go by, with its tumultuous percussion and foggy effects, then Terror & Healing is the sound of rain tumbling down a pixelated mountainside.

Fawn Spots
New Sense

Sometimes we all need to make some pretty pissed off music, of course - everybody knows that. The real question here is, does the name Fawn Spots refer to a place where fawns hang out, or is about different times people spotted fawns? Or maybe it’s about the spots on a fawn’s lower back. Honestly this band is a mystery wrapped in an enigma, but their new 7" sure sounds tasty!

Jenny Wilson
Demand The Impossible!

A reality check from Jenny Wilson. Demand The Impossible! is the introspective twelve tracker from the Swedish artist. Written while Wilson was receiving cancer treatment, the album features aggy synths, swooping vocal falsettos and wails, angular drums and squidgy bass lines. It's indie-art-disco-pop from Scandinavia, pick it up on on vinyl LP and CD from Crunchy Frog.

Mark Rogers + Mary Byrne
I Line My Days Along Your Weight

Debut album from the duo of Mark Rogers + Mary Byrne. They’ve used a barrage of interesting old instruments (including a “tricone resonator” and “golden-era flattop” - sounds delicious) and Mary’s rich voice to make these ten, close-feeling tracks. Mostly recorded live, for that extra sense of directness. LP on Important Records.

She's All Over You

There’s a lot to be said for two piece bands. It’s a challenge to get an original sound when there’s just two of you. Thankfully, Cowbell have got round the issue by having two members playing multiple instruments in this garage rock track, including hand drumming, guitar, keys, shakers, multiple voices and some stylish melodies. 7” vinyl.

Various
Normalised : The Detonic Collection

Australia has already stolen the source of all our garage punk/noise rock powers and set up a new base for the genres down under, and now they're taking aim at the dark recesses of electronic music. Detonic Records is home to a variety of unforgiving industrial acts and pulverising EDM artists, who shut out the sun, caving themselves into the dingiest of clubs. This compilation from the Melbourne label presents the sounds of many different countries, but especially highlights the emergent scene in Gothstralia.

Expo '70
July 18, 2004

Tenth anniversary edition of July 18, 2004 by Expo ‘70. Heavily influenced by Kosmiche and the surrounding ambient music, it’s a journey into the potential of guitars and FX. Think the beatless excursions of Popol Vuh and Ash Ra Tempel. Out on Cassette and vinyl LP from Sonic Meditations.

Bugs & Rats
Adidas

An obnoxious kebab of unrest from Bugs & Rats. Adidas is a bilge pump of evil hardcore/punk-rock with a seriously demented garage ascetic. Raw Material

London label EarToGround with their first release from German techno duo dualit. The weather is always grey and overcast on these dense remixes of Dronelock’s ‘Clusters’ 12”. The tracks are diverse, but there’s enough shared industrial drone, cut-throat snares, sandpaper bass and distorted kicks to keep you satisfied.

Peter's Window
Last Summer on Earth / Grapey Day

A pop artist who's as renegade as a TV cop who doesn't play by the rules, Pete Nichols' debut record Last Summer On Earth / Grapey Day combines his love of easy, persuasive melodies and subversive, mislabelled sound effects. It's the kind of pop that sounds pretty and ugly at the same time, which is a fair reflection of life, really.

Eaves
As Old As The Grave

Leeds local Eaves is a singer-songwriter with a knack for supreme sparsity and modesty. His newest EP, 'As Old As The Grave', depicts him as a masterful pianist and understated guitarist, using both to create dramatic songs with a bare minimum of supplementing. These songs are simple but grandiose, with lyrics about getting stuck in bitter cycles.

Conquering Animal Sound
Talking Shapes

Indietronica duo Conquering Animal Sound are releasing their first new work in over a year, following on from the lush and propulsive tactics employed for 2013's 'On Floating Bodies'. L.I.E.S affiliate Marcos Cabral back here as Chemotex for another solid Trilogy Tapes 12". Texture-heavy, grainy techno that growls and hisses before going straight for the jugular on Side A. The flip is stranger, twitching all over the place before settling into a raw but infectious industrial groove. All packaged in a nice screen printed sleeve.

Digital Dance
Total Erasement

Digital Dance are a supergroup of cold-hearted post-punks from a variety of chilly coat-wearing acts including Kid Montana, The Revenge and Marine. They know what they're doing, basically, and the dissonance, despondency and general dourness of 'Total Erasement' can speak to their wisdom and experience. This collection of their singles and demos paints a pretty picture of a gloomy band who will not be forgotten.

Joseph Houpert / Norm Chambers
Split

Yet more ambient joy comes from Desire Path here, with a 7" split by artists Norm Chambers and Joseph Houpert. Known more commonly as Panabrite, Chambers crafts Komische-influenced ambient works that synthesise the natural world with a krautish impression of it. Desire Path continue to show off every experimental and ambient act worth caring about in 2014.

The Bad Joke That Ended Well
Alta Loma

Alta Loma sees The Bad Joke That Ended well adding elements of 70s psychedelia to their garage rock sound. Long drum solos and theremins are added to the mix. The album takes its name from the hotel in John Fante’s brilliant novel Ask The Dust. Available on limited edition transparent vinyl with red, blue, green and yellow splatters.

Matchess
Seraphastra

This was originally released on tape by Digitalis and has now found itself released on vinyl. This is the solo project of Whitney Houston, singer & keyboardist for Chicago band VERMA. Houston's minimilist work owes as much to underground Berlin techno as it does to early experimenters  Throbbing Gristle & Cabaret Voltaire, placing Houston in league with counterparts like Zola Jesus & Liz Harris (Grouper). Sorry its Whitney Johnson...not Houston. my mistake. Just 300 copies of this and sounds rather super.

Zov Zov
Ruin Lust

Two techno enthusiasts worth being enthusiastic about make up Zov Zov, which supposedly means "something unknown, something ancient". Sure thing. Oliver Ho is one half of the group, and he's joined by Tommy Gillard, who he's worked with on dance-floor catered sounds before. This time, though, they up the ante and go for something more experimental, and maybe a little out of their comfort zones: the 'Rain Lust' 10" is a beatless landscape.

Karlist
Russian Torrent Versions 12

More from Russian Torrent Versions here, '12' offering up some new work from techno vortex ripper Karlist, who provides a strict and disciplined A-side based around a straight-and-narrow synthline and immediate percussion. The flipside is also a heavily percussive affair, with plenty of kicks to get you through the otherwise extremely ominous venture. If they weren't so hard to google, Russian Torrent Versions would be reigning supreme.

Suzerain
Dark Dark / Manhattan

Indie rock quintet Suzerain take a lot of photos in black and white and also occasionally write and record some music; the 'Dark Dark / Manhattan' 12" is a showcase of the latter, with two tracks that meld conventional guitar jamming with some weirder inspirations: hints of New Wave, Trent Reznor and krautrock Bowie.

Angus Tarnawsky
Pitched

Angus Tarnawsky gets welcome to the electronic stalwarts at Inner Surface Music with 'Pitched', an EP of disorientating rhythms, syncopated drums and stern synthesizer work. The A-side features the title-track as well as a remix from dub techno master AnD. On the flip are three more dark tunes with the occasional inclination for the dancefloor.

Ruby Fray
Grackle

'Grackle' is the newest record from Ruby Fray, a songwriter who tells dark stories by the way of sweet Americana melodies. Following up on 'Pith', this record continues to showcase Fray's brand of soft but equally unsettling indie folk, but also utilities left-field tactics, bringing in trip-hop style rhythms on "It's Mine" and honest-to-god beats on "Barbara". Like all good Americana-tinged records, there is a reprise.

People's Temple
Weekends Time

There's going to be a riff buried in the majority of these psych rock jams that will make you smile from ear to ear. People's Temple make a hazy, guitar-clashing sound that brings to mind the beach at night, with heartbroken vocal melodies and irresistibly catchy choruses that peak through the psych haze. 'Weekends Time' is as uproarious as ever, and contrary to how it may look, it's far less reminiscent of the Beach Boys.

Glass Ghost
Lyfe

Indie pop band Glass Ghost is host to singer and master of the keyboards Eliot Krimsky and drummer Mike Johnson, who made their new record 'Lyfe' with a sprinkling of indie rock royalty: from Sharon Van Etten to members of Here We Go Magic. Glass Ghost's idiosyncratic take on indie and synth pop styles -- throw in some harp for good measure -- meets the startling unique vocal of Krimsky, who is soft, airy and commanding at the same time.

Different Fountains
Shrimp That Sleeps

Brussels-based electronic duo Different Fountains have, for a few years now, been central proponents of Brussels’ modern electronic music scene. ‘Shrimp That Sleeps’ is their first full-length LP following the release of a 7” and 12” single on their own label, Different Fountains Editions. Featuring nine tracks on vinyl and ten on CD, 'Shrimp That Sleeps' is as engaging as it is absorbing, and touches upon subtle house music, post-rock, ambient and atmospheric pop.

High Lucia is the multi-directional ambient project of Pále, being released on Lex. 'Wash' is comprised of soundscapes of varying emotive quality, simple basslines and small vocal contributions from Joshua Idehen and Shanaz Dorsett, as well as percussion and synth from Pále. The result sounds like a set of productions that will be eaten up by those who love to listen to original Friendzone and Clams Casino tapes.   Tracks: Park Vista Dark Ages Riding Fine, Twenty Five Afar Dull Reverie Opal/Forever ft.
