Apollo Brown & Planet Asia
Anchovies

Powerful collab with former half of Cali Agents, Fresno’s Planet Asia, providing the rhymes over deep and scratchy soul selections from Detroit’s Apollo Brown. Willie the Kid, Guilty Simpson and Tri-State each make an appearance. Raw, minimal and basic with a lazy small hours feel and an intoxicating and utterly underground vibe. Green / black smoke coloured vinyl or CD.

No Monster Club
Where Did You Get That Milkshake

No Monster Club is the project of the prolific Dublin-based producer Bobby Aherne. Having already released a dozen albums, Aherne's style is a tongue-in-cheek take on pop music, mocking a lot of contemporary pop while being compared to "a stripped-down sugar high Pet Sounds". 'Where Did You Get That Milkshake' is the band's first 7" with contributions from other Dublin contemporaries (the album features a member of indie pop band Ginnels, and the artwork is by the drummer from Squarehead), proving that Dublin's music scene is just as incestuous as Leeds'. The results are a bunch of instantly catchy, off-kilter pop gems.

Milk Kan
The Glitch Country EP

I wasn't expecting to see a reference to witch house in a press release in 2018, but hey what can you do. The Glitch Country EP is the first physical release from Milk Kan since 2011 and as it's name suggests, offers up a short meal of improbable fusions. Glitch and country, drill and witch house.

And The Golden Choir
Breaking With Habits

Indie encounters of the grand and soulful kind from Berlin’s sumptuously-named And the Golden Choir. This one-person choir of one Tobias Siebert mixes up various instruments and references, but his overall style is quite a consistent, camp melodrama - somewhere between Dead Can Dance and Keane.

Birdpen
There’s Something Wrong With Everything

There’s Something Wrong With Everything by Birdpen is perhaps not the doom-laden title it initially appears to be. Whilst they do lament the state of the world that is piped into our living rooms via the TV, they suggest that you do something to find the positives and get out of the endless cycle of negativity because nothing’s perfect, there’s always something wrong with everything. LP and CD on Fintage House.

Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein
Stranger Things 2 (A Netflix Original Series Soundtrack)

The SURVIVE members return with their soundtrack to the second series of the Netflix sci-fi show. Recalling the classic synth scores of Tangerine Dream and John Carpenter is part of their remit, but this isn’t just lazy nostalgic simulation - there’s oodles of inventiveness, sensitivity and drama here. And one can only imagine Dixon and Stein had an absolute blast making it. As Dustin might say, you will not resist these pearls! Jewel case CD or lavish double LP in both black and clear/splatter editions.

Acid Pauli
Selected Indianer Works

Acid Pauli (aka Martin Gretschmann of The Notwist) has soundtracked the new film Es war einmal Indianerland, and this release picks out the best sections of that soundtrack for some separate listening. Its an eclectic set, with Pauli playing to the mood of each scene, but Selected Indianer Works sounds brilliant on a stereo too. LP release on Ouie.

Arc Iris
Icon of Ego

Brooklyn label Ba Da Bing! (Julie Byrne, Katie Von Schleicher) drop the third LP from avant-pop group Arc Iris. For three people they sure do make a big sound on Icon Of Ego. Singer/guitarist Jocie Adams provides an anchor for the band’s complex, slightly math-indebted brand of electronic rock. Imagine Dirty Projectors with The Physics House Band shoring up the live show and you’re there or thereabouts.

The time had come for London indie band The Rifles to step through the doors of Abbey Road Studios. Cursive
Vitriola

Emo punks Cursive have passed the time since their inception writing about the difficulties of settling down and keeping the love you've found. Tim Kasher has effectively made it his life's work to expose, via shouting, the stresses of domestic living, and has also made some great, weird concept albums about relationships like The Ugly Organ. After a pithy dud in I Am Gemini, their 2012 rock 'n' roll monodrama, they return with Vitriola. An absolute classic Cursive album name, the record promises a return from founding drummer Clint Schnase, and considers (what else) the dystopia hellscape we're living in. It will no doubt be melodic, brash and all at once.

Cristobal Tapia De Veer
Girl With All The Gifts

The Girl With All The Gifts is a notable new zombie film, coming with a soundtrack by Cristobal Tapia de Veer which is presented here on vinyl. Cristobal’s music uses lots of electronic processing of voices, violins etc. to produce a dense and busy soundscape that recalls certain bits of the Radiohead catalogue as much as it does the more traditional zombie soundtrack touchstones. Double LP on Death Waltz.

Various
Air Texture Vol.VI – Selected by Steffi and Martyn

The Air Texture series reaches volume six and for the occasion drafts in Steffi and Martyn for another double-CD's worth of previously unreleased gems. Consider the calibre of the selectors -- famous both for their individual spins on house and techno -- and then consider the brief as per usual: leftfield selections, ambience aplenty and techno in name only, too widescreen perhaps to be limited to the dance-floor. 26 tracks, including appearances by: dBridge, Shed, FaltyDL, As One, KiNK and of course, Steffi and Martyn themselves. The vinyl option is a double-EP with 8 tracks.

Atmosphere
Mi Vida Local

Mi Vida Local is the seventh album from long time "alt-rappers" Atmosphere. It's coming up on three decades now that the duo of Slug and Ant have been practicing their craft, but more importantly it's been two years since their last album. America's last two years have been troubled and in response the band have turned to their local community, to create something warm, familiar, and defiant.

Hinosch
Hands

Hinosch are a Dusseldorf-Osaka proposition, featuring two people who have variously been in To Rococo Rot and Goat. Hands is their first full-length album, and it is staunchly instrumental, though less improvised than their past work, What we hear is fully-fledged, busy and bustling electronic music, driven by proper drum machines and wee tape loops. Propulsive fun, on the TAL label.

Universal Eyes
Four Variations On ‘Artificial Society’

A line-up many may have expected never to see in the year of our lord 2018… Universal Eyes is a combination of Universal Indians and Wolf Eyes, and in this case that means Aaron Dilloway alongside John Olson and Nate Young again, as well as the vibrant power of Gretchen Gonzales-Davidson. Four Variations on ‘Artificial Society’ is a delightfully deep and murky suite of sounds: you know you’re going to love it. From Lower Floor Music.

Karla Borecky
The Still Life

Just like her music takes time to unfold, Karla Borecky likes to spend her time making it. The Still Life is only her second album in seven years and is the follow up to 2011’s Still In Your Pocket. She has, of course, made three albums with experimental duo Idea Fire Company in the intervening years. The depth and heartfelt nature of her playing is as evident here as it is in her previous work. Fresh from his recent exciting archival release and her very fine Cuspeditions album, Carl Stone and Miki Yui present their collaborative work together under the name Realistic Monk. Rhyw
Cave Walls (Part One)

Cassegrain member Alex Tsiridis takes it solo for a second time under his Rhyw alias. This is focused material, with no messing around to be heard. 12” on Avian.

E-Unity
Tallarita EP

French producer E-Unity (one Loïc Berger) releases his inner bee for London’s FTD Records. The title track does a mode-switching dance around clubby references, which is both awkward and absolutely compelling at once. Nailed it. ‘Everlasting Legacy (Collage Mix)’ follows a similar method, while the other two tracks allow a little more consistency.

Denmark Vessey
Sun Go Nova

From urban Detroit via the heart of New York City, Denmark Vessey jettisons his latest 7-track EP, Sun Go Nova on the gigantic Mello Music Group. Punchy, kaleidoscopic soul combines with raw beats and Vessey's loose flows on a record produced by Earl Sweatshirt and Knwledge. There's oodles of charm and humour here and it's catchy as hell, y'all. Really.

Liars

After Mess, you might have thought you’d never hear from the Angus Andrew / Aaron Hemphill line-up of Liars ever again, but get this: they also created some soundtrack work for Jeremy Phillips’ film 1/1 before they parted ways, and now we can hear it. Their material is so extremely powerful that Phillips even recut parts of the film around it! Out from Mute.

Answer Code Request
Gens

Four years on from the debut Answer Code Request LP Code and the Berghain resident issues this murky, tense follow-up. Gens is a pretty unremitting listen. Most of the tracks here see monolithic four-on-the-floors shrouded in great billows of hissing reverb. Unearthly synths and clanking percussion skulk in the fog. Only on the likes of the mournfully weightless ‘Orarum’ does the haze clear.

Das Body
Das Body

Luminelle Recordings did good earlier this year when they released an excellent bedroom pop record from Helena Deland. This, the eponymous debut EP from Das Body (great name), is also pretty decent. The four tracks here are politely funky synth-pop with a bit of a Christine & The Queens thing going on. Numbers like 'Boys' also sound a little like that surprisingly good Paramore album which came out recently.

Nova Materia
It Comes

Nova Materia here show their debut album to the world, full of their idiosyncratic take on electronically-driven post-punk. It Comes could feasibly be at home both on the decks of an electro-focused club, or on the stage of any number of festivals. The band grew out of remnants of Chilean band Panico, so if you liked them, you should give this a go. On Crammed Discs.

A Certain Ratio
Mind Made Up

The final (at the time of writing) LP from A Certain Ratio is set to wax once more as part of Mute’s ongoing ACR reissues series. Though 2008’s Mind Made Up may not carry the same clout as seminal records like The Graveyard And The Ballroom, it still finds the band in rude health despite the members all being well into middle age. Young upstarts like Golden Teacher and !!! owe them a huge debt.

Sugai Ken
UkabazUmorezU

With needlepoint precision and a crystal clear veneer, Sugai Ken brings his dynamic yet delicate tapestries of artificial and organic sound to Rvng Intl. His previous outings on EM Records and Lullabies For Insomniacs have helped shine a light on the illustrious sound design feats the Kanagawa, Japan-based artist is capable of. This album builds on that reputation with some startling excursions into audio collage.

Richard Reed Parry
Quiet River of Dust Vol. 1

While Richard Reed Parry has previously explored neoclassical textures, Quiet River of Dust Vol 1 sees him move into exquisite songcraft matching Beach Boys harmonies with electronic pulses and songs culled from both the British and Japanese folk tradition. He's also a member of twenty plus-headed stadium rock beast Arcade Fire which should help his solo works find a deserved audience.

GØGGS

GOGGS are yet another band who feature the world's most active garage rocker Ty Segall. This time he's on guitar whilst Chris Shaw 'smokes the mic' as the press release confirms. T&K Crew
Memory Child

Posthuman’s Balkan Vinyl imprint (Mark Archer, Perseus Traxx) drop an EP centred on T&K Crew’s ‘Memory Child’. The original is acid (it’s always acid with this lot) with a nice techno bite to it. Three remixes each give the tune a different spin. The label bosses pare back the 303 to create a bleeping electro-house delight; Kirk Degiorgio takes us to Chicago; and the ‘Acid Tool’ re-rub is - who’d have guessed? - yet more acid.

One of the living giants of today’s techno scene, Marcel Dettmann, of Club Berghain’s Ostgut Ton, is not one to sit still. Test-File counts 6 tracks and 22 minutes, all of which dance-able, and covers the spectrum from techno to dirty acid house.

Isabella
Whistle

He’s a busy bee, that Peder Mannerfelt. As well as touring and releasing his own records at a rate of knots, the Swedish producer also manages to make time for running his own Peder Mannerfelt Produktion label. The latest PMP drop comes courtesy of Boston-based artist Isabella. The five tracks of her Whistle EP can be placed into two camps - ‘Residual’, ‘Penchant’ and ‘Vain’ are all whirligig techno jams that recall the work of Mannerfelt himself, while ‘Dicey Takes Its Form’ and ‘I Could Get You’ are eerie ambient things equal-parts Mark Mothersbaugh and Pram.

It's Convenanza 2018, after the festival of the same name. Oluko Imo
Praise Jah

Despite Manu Dibango’s ‘Soul Makossa’ being a crucial record in the early days of disco and Michael Jackson’s ‘Wanna Be Starting Something’ bringing the track's refrain to wider attention, not many of the Makossa genre’s wealth of gems have crossed the gap from Cameroon to the West. Oluko Imo’s 1979 Makossa cut here joins the slipstream of excellent contemporaneous sub-Saharan club cuts that have been reissued by Soundway, Soul Jazz Recs et al. Backed with a dub.

Michael Nau
Michael Nau & The Mighty Thread

The Mighty Thread is not a really bad conversation on a message board that deviates into people agreeing to disagree, but rather the bonus name for Michael Nau, who made a bright, folksy record in Some Twist. He's back with this knottily poetic follow-up that embraces ambiguity and uncertainty with odd writing and performing decisions: different members of his makshift band placed their instruments in different rooms of the house, with an amp in the bathroom and a piano in the living room. This seemed to encourage a strange, communal vibe for a record that feels like a crew going one level extra to help out each other.

Juan Atkins
Dimensions / Flash Flood

Life's Good is a new label about to bring us reissued classics from the golden age of Detroit / European Techno. Their inaugural release is this lush double-header from Juan Atkins: Dimensions / Flash Flood. Originally recorded in the early 1990s and issued on the famous "Panic In Detroit" compilation from 1992 under his M500 / Model 500 guise, "Dimensions" is a percolating, bleepy charmer now given its own side of loud-cut wax on this 12", freshly remastered by Rashad Becker.  Meanwhile on the flip, Flash Flood appears as a fresh twist on the original with acidic synth and ominously deep sub-bass.

Osheyack
Sadomodernism

‘Sadomodernism’ is a term used by writer Moira Weigel to describe the trend of contemporary arthouse films to focus overwhelmingly on inflicting pain on characters and audiences and denying pleasure (Haneke et al). Shanghai-based US producer Osheyack adapts this concept to music, resulting in abrasive, provocatively disordered and systematically un-genred compositions.

13 Reasons Why - Season 2 (A Netflix Original Series Soundtrack)

The press release for this record leads with ‘New music from Gomez’, which isn’t a great start, but things pick up when you realise that they actually mean Selena Gomez. Obviously this is some of the music from the second season of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why. There are new songs from (among others) YUNGBLUD and Lord Huron and, err, OneRepublic. Some golden oldies from New Order, Echo & The Bunnymen, Tears For Fears and other bands of that ilk also make the cut.

R.S. Pearson
Reality from Childhood Remembered as a Dream

First active in the early 1980s Seattle underground, experimental composer R. S. Pearson finally gets to cross “Get an official release with a label” off his to-do list. Collected for vinyl by Serendip Lab, these various short, charming works of arpeggio sequences and sound design also dabble in algorithmic/generative composition and strange, ambiguous moods. Oliver Coates & Laurie Tompkins
Ample Profanity

Oliver Coates is a prodigious talent. He’s been too good for too long now for anyone to put in a salient argument to the contrary. Here we see him returning to Slip, the label that put out his excellent collaborative LP with Mica Levi, for a short record of avant-anarchism alongside Laurie Tompkins. Ample Profanity is a disorientating listen - at one point it will resemble the kindergarten punk of early Micachu & The Shapes, then a few seconds later it’ll be on an Einstuerzende Neubauten flex.

As he's partly responsible for one of the greatest tracks of all time (Total Freedom's Bitch Better Have My Money edit), I've always had a soft spot for Sami Baha. His new album is a compelling document of the state of contemporary "club" music, and features guest spots from UK Drill superstar Dimzy, as well as Yung Lean and Egyptian MCs Dawsha and Abanob.

David Housden
Thomas Was Alone: Official Soundtrack

Here we have a game soundtrack... We all love our game soundtracks, don't we?  The train of thought for David Housden when composing 'Thomas Was Alone', went something along the lines of: quiet, tense atmospheres (sparse piano fragments), dramatic builds (dense string sections) and spooky-otherworldy oddness (haunting, eerie synths). Both game and sounds have garnered widespread applause -- with BAFTA nominations for story *and* music! Now remastered for vinyl, in limited 180g red or 'classic' black LP editions. Also, includes new tracks for the release on PS4. Which'll make sense to the gamers, I'm sure. Release through Black Screen Records.

Otik
Top Ten EP

After a run of releases on labels including Dext Recordings and Brotherhood Sound System, young talent Otik moves to the next level and drops via Keysound (Wen, Okzharp & Samrai). The tunes that make up Top Ten are a fresh mix of sounds. While grounded in the soundsystem techno style of labels like Timedance and 3024, Otik isn’t afraid to incorporate elements of UK Funky and dub-techno into his work. It makes for a pleasing mix.

Volcov
From The Archive Vol. 2

Volcov’s first …From The Archive compilation was a tasteful collection of jazz-adjacent rarities that dated from as far back as the 1970’s. Two years on and the market for golden age soul-jazz/disco/funk reissues has become crowded, so Volcov has selected ten twenty-first century nuggets for the second installment of the series. The set, which includes tunes by Ron Trent and the Roy Ayers-affiliated Harry Whitaker, flows nicely between nu-jazz, neo-soul and hip-hop. All in all From The Archive Volume 2 is a fine bit of curation.

NTS Session 2

Number two in the series of four of Autechre’s live sessions for London/Manchester based online radio station NTS brings two further hours of fresh music from the shapeshifting duo. In full glitching IDM mode for the opening of this one, from the outset they move from the speedy micro beat shifting of elyc9 7hres through stumbler six of eight (midst) and into the Granz Graf metallic churning of xflood. Then slowly shifting into more abstract droning movements.. Triple LP on Warp.

Haldern Pop (Wildbirds & Peacedrums, Dry The River) release the third LP by Toronto hip-hop group The Lytics. While the five-piece’s Souls Of Mischief/Pharcyde-y boom-bap might not be much in vogue at the moment, on Float On they do what they do with a nice balance of energy, charisma and eloquence. It must help that Mike D has taken them under his wing too.

Michael Giacchino
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

You may not know him by name, but chances are you've heard the music of Michael Giacchino. He's one of the current big-hitters in the world of film-scoring, and in the past couple of years he’s composed for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, War For The Planet Of The Apes and The Incredibles II. Furthermore, he's also had a crack at a couple of films from the rebooted Jurassic World series, and this Mondo release presents his music for Fallen Kingdom across two vinyl. It’s fun John Williams-y bombast.

The Paragons
On The Beach

The Paragons’ 1967 LP On The Beach really isn’t very much like the similarly-named Neil Young record which followed seven years later. Where Young’s album was a muted, pensive affair, these ten tracks are full-throated bits of Rocksteady Soul from the Jamaican trio. The group’s close vocal harmonies are delightful, and Alton Ellis would be proud of tunes like ‘I Want To Go Back’ and ‘When The Lights Are Low’.

He may have had those frizzy tight curls cut off but here he is with a moustache like that and posing top off for an album sleeve. Just six months after Windswept, which featured some of his memorable contributions to the latest Twin Peaks series, Mr. Jewel’s ready with the next batch. A mother-and-son duo here, which isn’t something you see every day. Mama Bear - the mum of the duo, if that wasn’t obvious enough - strums a nice guitar while her handsome son Madisen Ward intones in a manner similar to Ray LaMontagne and Iron & Wine. The Alone Rush, the fifth LP Wrekmeister Harmonies have served up for Thrill Jockey, is the first that sees the band take to the stage as duo. The group’s miserabilist-in-chief J. R. Robinson now comes with Esther Shaw in tow as an official member. Helped wby several guest spots from Swans bloke Thor Harris, the group make music as brooding and intense as anything in the band’s catalogue to date. Yes, although Frick has released a handful of EPs over recent years and made music for over twenty years, Second Yard Botanicals is the Berliner's first full-length under his own steam. Well, he finally buckled down and got on with it, and aren't we glad; Frick used an assortment of instruments as well as his own field recordings and dissected breakbeats to craft a sonic collage infused with eclecticism and classical influences, interwoven with fragile melodies drawing on the poetry he takes in every day. Wowzers.

Bear Bones, Lay Low / Don't DJ
Plafond 3

After two entries that have seen contributions from Legowelt and Milan W., the third record in BAKK’s Plafond series hosts new work from Don’t DJ and Bear Bones, Lay Low. Both of the jams here take up a full-side, and the artists luxuriate in the length of their pieces. While the latter's collaboration has yielded a psychedelic, New Age-y electronic odyssey in ‘Dissolve Into The Night’, Don’t DJ’s ‘Rag For Rudolf Rocker’ is a tense anti-groove that could be a soundtrack to a piece of contemporary dance.

211 Circles Of Rushing Water

DJ Residue is the latest alias of the shape-shifting Gunnar Wendel (Kassem Mosse, The Siege Of Troy). 211 Circles of Rushing Water continues in the vein of recent releases on The Trilogy Tapes from Parris and Metasplice. Instrumental trio Trouble made Snake Eyes especially for the return of Twin Peaks, as performed in the Roadhouse on an episode of the show. David Lynch's son Riley is on guitar, Dean Hurley drums and Alex Zhang Hungtai (Dirty Beaches) blows sax. Cinematic tunes for a darkly parallel universe.

Icarus Peel’s Acid Reign
The Window On The Side Of Your Head

Icarus Peel’s Acid Reign take their cues from classic rock trios such as Cream, The Groundhogs, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Taste. Icarus Peel himself felt that a different home was needed, away from his band The Honey Pot and his collaboration with Crystal Jacqueline, for new material to thrive. The Window On The Side Of Your Head is the new album and as the album cover may suggest, this man likes a guitar solo. Limited edition 180g yellow vinyl LP on Mega Dodo.
