Masonna
Bursting Absolute Moods (The Lost First Album 1989)

Here the God of Noise Masonna in fine early form here on Bursting Absolute Moods, an album recorded in 1989 and originally due to be released on Vis A Vis Audio Arts. But it never happened, and these recordings, made in super-direct manner at home (neighbours be damned) never came out… Until now! Raw electronics, feedback, and loads of screaming, all extremely distorted and very good. LP on Urashima.

Why?
Aokohio

Almost two decades on from Yoni Wolf’s first release, he continues to ask ‘Why?’. In the case of 'AOKOHIO' the answer seems to be something to do with an accompanying visual project and an LP broken up into short song-suites. Musically it’s another set of bombastic avant-rap from the singular Wolf. Once again the likes of Dirty Projectors and Of Montreal are your sonic touchstones for a Why? album.

Vintage Future
Dookie Machine

Turns out that America can't even provide its own citizens with clean water. In Flint Michigan due to cost cutting measures drinking water was poisoned with lead. Mark Taylor aka Vintage Future has come up with this message in music to try to provoke interest in the crisis. Features suitably dirty beats and filthy disco moves.

Touch Tone

Ian Wyatt returns to Mood Hut with his latest Local Artist EP, a four-track affair on 12” vinyl named Touch Tone. Lou Hayter
Cherry On Top

Originally appearing at the end of last year and enjoying heavy rotation on BBC 6Music, this is a 12” single release for ‘Cherry On Top’, a piece of feather-light funk that served as the debut solo single for Lou Hayter. The long-of-memory among you may recognise her as a member of the short-lived New Young Pony Club back in the mid-Noughties. Features instrumental and a-cappella versions on the B-side.

K2
Hepatopolitika

An incredibly rare work released originally in 1994 on just 125 numbered copies, Hepatopolitika from K2 (the recording name of Japanese sound artist Kimihide Kusafuka). Recorded on his return to music after qualifying as a pathologist, it’s a minimalistic mix of musique concrete, and it now gets a lavish (but not much bigger) re-issue on Urashima.

1 Minute 2 Midnight is the second solo album by Russ Waterhouse. Waterhouse was one half of the experimental duo Blues Control who are currently on indefinite hiatus. Dino Spiluttini
Heaven

Vienna’s Dino Spiluttini joins the roster of Vienna’s Editions Mego. I wonder often Dino and Peter Rehberg bump into one another at the supermarket. This is an album of powerfully realised neo-church music productions; Spiluttini’s bristling, gnashing style achieves a particularly spiritual grandness in its search for comfort from earthly trials.

Dan Luke and The Raid
Out Of The Blue

Out Of The Blue is the debut album by American indie rockers, Dan Luke & The Raid. Luke says the album concentrates on that transition period in your twenties when you realise you need to grow up. The Predator

The new Predator film isn’t a budget affair, oh no. They had the budget on hand to not only commission Henry Jackman to provide the score, but also to bring in a 180 piece orchestra to record it. That means that there both tremendous scale and tremendous detail are available to Jackman, and he makes full use on this dramatic OST. Released by Lakeshore Records.

Compa
Not a Kick

Soundsystem upstart Compa takes time out from running his own CPA Records to return to Deep Medi with another firebrand set. The three tracks of Not A Kick are a neat demonstration of what the producer does best. Wedding grime drum programming with meditative bassweight and the sort of paranoid atmospherics of a Swamp81 drop, Compa makes it all sound effortless here.

Lord RAJA
Amadeus

Amadeus is the latest inscrutable effort from New York-based artist Lord RAJA. NxxxxxS
Formatted Excess

Have they really called themselves that? And how do we ask for it in store? Well, as usual Google has the answer for everything and first up, this is a shadowy, Parisian vaporwave styled beatmaker about whom little is known except that you apparently pronounce it N-Five-X-Z. Doesn't really make it any easier but at least saves white people some embarrassment at the counter.

Koehler
Winged

The latest drop from DISK Records (Bambounou, Harmonious Thelonious) is a set of skull-shaking techno from former Whities/ESP Institute fellow Koehler. Tracks such as the Winged title cut feature kick drums that hit like sledgehammers and hoofing great basslines offset by atmospherics you’d almost describe as ethereal. For related artists think Randomer and Clouds.

AN-i + Unhuman
s/t

AN-I is back on L.I.E.S., this time with UNHUMAN in tow. As one might expect from such an infernal union, the tracks on this self-titled EP are devilish slabs of body music that blend techno, industrial, minimal synth and post-punk influences. The likes of Alec Empire and The D.A.F. are all invoked in the cacophony of scuffed-up drums, yelping vocals and cheap, nasty basslines.

Eleventeen Eston
Delta Horizon

Eleventeen is a number Homer Simpson can count up to. Eleventeen Eston is the project of Austrailian DJ, producer and musician, John William Tanner. Delta Horizon is his infamous album which was released on cassette only in 2014 on L.A's esteemed Not Not Fun label. There were only 100 copies of that cassette, but apparently everybody who got a copy was very cool. Musically it gives Todd Rundgren a run for his money. Now it is being remastered for, and pressed on vinyl so you can join the cool kids gang.

Gareth Quinn Redmond
Laistigh Den Ghleo

Laistigh Den Ghleo is a set of beautifully spare ambient compositions from Irish composer Gareth Quinn Redmond. For this record Redmond draws direct inspiration from Satoshi Ashikawa’s 1982 album Still Way (Wave Notation 2). Ashikawa said his music ‘should drift like smoke and become part of the environment surrounding the listener's activity’, and it’s easy to see Redmond taking this to heart in Laistigh Den Ghleo’s environmental watercolours. Midori Takada, another touchstone for Redmond, provides some of the liner notes.

Roam
Smile Wide

Eastbourne’s premier pop-punks ROAM return with their third LP Smile Wide. The tunes here are slick blends of various tropes from across the scene - chugging grooves, anthemic choruses, gang vocals and just the occasional hint of screamo. They’re sure to sound great sandwiched between Every Time I Die and Neck Deep on a bunch of festival bills. Smile Wide is out via Hopeless Records (New Found Glory, The Used).

Liam Gallagher
One of Us

Please please please pleeeeeeeeeease let this new Liam Gallagher single be a cover of ABBA’s heartbreak anthem ‘One Of Us’. Can you imagine - the man with a fork, in his world of soup, belting out one of Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid’s most achingly beautiful compositions. I mean, it’s not going to be - the writing credits alone tell us that 'One Of Us' is an LG original - but that’s not going to stop us dreaming. England expects.

A split here, containing a fresh and exciting collaboration on each side. On side A, experimental music’s elder statesman David Toop pairs with Jan Hendrikse in order to actualise a text score by Chieko Shiomi, very quietly. On side B, Cath Roberts, the sax leader of Sloth Racket, leads the large City University Experimental Ensemble in a performance of new work of hers. Out on multi.modal.

Dude York’s second LP for Hardly Art - third if you count a Christmas album they made back in 2017 - finds the Seattle trio rockin’ harder than ever before. Falling is an album full of great grungy chugs and pretty, melodic and very pop-punk vocals. A Sagittariun
The Circle Stops Somewhere

Sagittariuns, eh. Generous, funny, impatient, and - on the evidence of A Sagittariun’s The Circle Stops Somewhere - into raving. Originally issued way back in 2011, the influence of Nick Harris’ first EP under this name can be heard in subsequent works by the likes of Floating Points and Answer Code Request. The two originals are propulsive, melodic and slightly wistful techno that will go well with many DJ styles. Mike Dehnert provides a duo of remixes - one laid-back, one tough.

Anal Trump
The First 100 Songs

Inspired by the late Seth Putnam’s pan-offensive Anal Cunt, this San Diego project transforms 100 of 45’s most absurdist utterances and disturbing ideals into blink-and-you-miss-em grindcore tracks. There’s a terrible fittingness in ‘I Like The Soldiers Who DON'T Get Captured’ and ‘9/11 Was Inconvenient For Me, Personally’ being pressed into this aesthetic: but of course, the titles are pretty much all there is to this high-concept fare, with the music as an afterthought. It may get away with straddling the divide between incisive satire and one-joke novelty, but with every day bringing fresh racist, misogynist, planet-threatening authoritarian horror, does anyone want to relive it ironically over blastbeats?

Space Farm
Egyptology 0.5

Here we have Space Farm circa the mid-1990’s, when they were really feeling the Egyptian vibes. Rad slow-speed jams with thick synths, chunky percussion, and Arabic tones. Released now by Left Ear Records.

Decoy Street

Cube is a solo Californian sound-mangler, and Decoy Street is his second album to date. He’s definitely got a taste for the noise, and there are plenty of ferocious textures and even some crushed howls. Julian Lynch
Rat's Spit

Rat’s Spit is the new album from Real Estate guitarist and Norman Records favourite, Julian Lynch. His music generally sounds like a slightly weirder, less pop, more fractured version of his parent band, but is certainly not lacking in quality. It’s his 7th album, but first since 2013’s Lines. It sees him mining inspiration from Tears For Fears, Kate Bush, George Clinton, Cocteau Twins, Yes and Steve Vai (Steve Vai?! really?! but he had custom-made guitars with carrying handles cut out of them!) Anyway, if the past is anything to go by, it should be a good ‘un. LP on Ya Reach / Underwater Peoples.

Factory Floor
Transform / Wonder

"Just the two of us" sang Gabriel Gurnsey and Nik Colk last year as they realised that their original four piece had been whittled down to a two piece.  The press release talks of heavy bass grooves and scattered percussion which is just about par for the course with Factory Floor though B side 'Wonder' is a more hushed affair with an atmospheric wash of synths.

Rivulets
In Our Circle

Nathan Amundson makes some of the slowest and smokiest guitar music out there, and he does it under the alias of Rivulets. Previous records have been candle-burning delights to rival the languishing intensity of Jason Molina; In Our Circle showcases him as all of his best selves, whether he's attaching space rock to his resume or doing harshed pastoral psychedelics in the vein of latter day Neil Young. As always, a lot of it is sad and hopeless, because, yeah, Rivulets album.

YWF
Replaced

Copenhagener YWF serves up a pair of choons for fellow Danes Echocord. These are balanced on the flip by two remixes from the artist’s chums over at Berlin’s Freund Der Familie. YWF goes for crisp-rhythmed dub (‘Replaced’) and commuter train anxiety (‘All is Temporary’) while FDF keep it lush and minimal (‘Fdf’s Reshape’) as well as modulation-mad (‘Fdf’s Days of Doom Remix’).

Sympathy Nervous
Sympathy Nervous

Since 2011, champion reissuers Minimal Wave have had their eye on Yoshifumi Niinuma aka Sympathy Nervous, a fellow with a passion for German minimalism and building his own equipment from scratch. This was his debut album, released in Japan in 1980 and putting a distinctive and inventive spin on groovy, polyrhythmic pre-techno and tape manipulations.

MATTHS
Velocet

Synthy beats with a very satisfying build from MATTHS (no I don't know what that second 'T' is for). Reminds me of some of James Holden's more euphoric moments, with modular synth lines all colliding in a million different ways. Highlight is the a-side which is probably as much of a pick-me-up as a fresh cup of coffee.

MAAT
The Next

'The Next' is a compilation of works by MAAT - German artist Dörte Marth AKA Xyramat who has been active since the early '80s creating her visionary experimental/electronic music. Spencer Clark has been hugely inspired ber her work, particularly for his creations as Fourth World Magazine and Typhonian Highlife. He's curated a fine selection of tracks as an overview of her largely under the radar output and is presenting them on his Pacific City Sound Visions imprint. MAAT creates a wondrous musical world using a combination of drum machines, percussion and classical influences and shares a sense of mystery and awe with the work of the legendary Limpe Fuchs.

David Bowie
Clareville Grove Demos

Doesn’t he look young? Parlophone’s covetous pursuit of early Bowie demos follows Spying Through a Keyhole with a new triple 7” set of unheard 1969 recordings. Recorded with John Hutchinson, the mono tunes are packaged in a mimicry of Bowie’s hand-scrawled demo submission sleeves.

Daniel Davies
Soeurs De Glisse (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Original score from Belgian documentary film Soeurs De Glisse. Both beautiful and tense, the music brilliantly reflects the film’s subject - two Belgian sisters, one visually-impaired, who competed at the South Korea Paralympic Games as skiers and brought home a medal. You may know Davies from his recent work with one John Carpenter, clearly he is a soundtracker to be reckoned with.

Dreadnought
Emergence

Colorado metal group Dreadnought serve up their fourth LP (first for Profound Lore). Emergence is another set of ambitious songs from the Denver group. Cuts like ‘Besieged’ are a bit doomy, a bit proggy, a bit black metal-y. An album like Emergence makes sense on a label that has also released records by Wayfarer and Bell Witch.

Kleenex Girl Wonder
White Lacuna

Given that Kleenex Girl Wonder are gearing up to mark 25 years in the game, you could forgive KGW main man Graham Smith if he wanted to take his foot off the gas a little. However, if anything the band are upping their work-rate these days. White Lacuna is the group’s second LP of 2018, and judging by the energy on display here they might be good for another one before 12 more months are up. This is an LP of typically zany indie jangles - imagine Eels with more pep.

Factory Floor
Heart Of Data / Babel

For Factory Floor's first record on their own H/O/D label, the band release two tracks inspired by the 1927 Fritz Lang classic of silent cinema and science fiction, Metropolis. 'Heart Of Data' and 'Babel' were culled from the score which the band wrote, and performed live in front of an awestruck Science Museum crowd in April of last year. Industrial modular synth rhythms and spacey, atmospheric textures ahoy. 12" on Heart Of Data.

Lowfish
Hypersensitivity EP

After a few years of lying low (pun very much intended), Lowfish returns to the fray with six fine-tuned electro jams. The tracks on Hypersensitivity aren’t out to reinvent the wheel, just offer good old fashioned club fodder to get loose to of an evening. Perky synths and crisp 808s abound, and the likes of ‘Favourable Report’ have a bit of a Gary Numan thing going on. This EP also marks Lowfish’s return to Suction Records (D’Arcangelo, RX-101), the label he co-founded back in the 90s.

The Minus 5
Stroke Manor

My goodness what a backstory. This ain't no average the Minus 5 record. Turns out leader Scott McCaughey suffered a stroke which nearly killed him and wiped his entire musical history from his brain. But rather than wallow in misery he started his recovery by writing a new album. The results are as fragmentary and scattershot as you would imagine. Peter Buck (REM) and Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) helped him makes sense of it all.

You Flexi Thing Vol 5 – East & West Side Story

More anti-fascist righteousness from R*E*P*E*A*T Records here. The fifth instalment of the label’s flexi-disc series You Flexi Thing - and I think we can all agree that's an excellent name - East & West Side Story lines up two Welsh groups (Picsel, The Sandinistas) with another two from East Anglia (Lemondaze, Tundra). Lemondaze and Picsel get lost in dreamy psych-rock reveries while the others serve up some good old-fashioned snot-punk.

Krikor
Saudi

After an extremely limited cassette run on Low Jack’s Editions Gravats back in 2017, Krikor’s Saudi now gets a vinyl pressing courtesy of Long Island Electrical Systems (Svengalisghost, Simoncino). The sides of Saudi were originally made for a French TV documentary that focussed on the questionable dealings of the Saudi royal family, and Krikor makes sure to instil his music with plenty of murk and shade. Grainy ambiences evolve into eerie minimal synth numbers, Balearic beats bang a little too loud for comfort, and Krikor generally makes you sit up and pay attention.

The nomadic IVVVO returns to Rabit’s Halcyon Veil (700 Bliss, Chino Amobi) for the release of his third LP.
