Apollo Brown & Planet Asia
Anchovies

Powerful collab with former half of Cali Agents, Fresno’s Planet Asia, providing the rhymes over deep and scratchy soul selections from Detroit’s Apollo Brown. Willie the Kid, Guilty Simpson and Tri-State each make an appearance. Raw, minimal and basic with a lazy small hours feel and an intoxicating and utterly underground vibe. Green / black smoke coloured vinyl or CD.

sɪŋkrɪtɪzəm
Our Souls Are In The Hands Of The Translator

Arcola Records (Nkisi, Rian Treanor) drop a new 12” from Jamal Moss aka Hieroglyphic Being under his new sɪŋkrɪtɪzəm alias. Our Souls Are In The Hands Of The Translator has comes through with two intriguing bits of cosmic acid. ‘Impoverished Spirits’ is a perky, star-gazing and vaguely two-stepping roller that hits its stride about halfway through, while lengthy B-side ‘Bilal’ is an obtuse burbling DJ tool.

Russell Haswell
Constitutional

Here’s a 2014 session from deranged synth-noiser and Consumer Electronics / Autechre associate Russell Haswell! Constitutional, which the liner notes tell us was recorded in one evening, is a typically Haswellian slab of beat-driven modular synth noise, and it ought to make you feel like Haswell looks on the sleeve if you listen to it loud enough. Vinyl release on Bocian.

This self-titled full length from Muscle Barbie is the band's second release and promises more of the same from their first release on tape All Your Stuff. Ondatropica
Baile Bucanero

Ondatrópica’s second record features more than thirty musicians playing in a style that mixes the multiple influences of Bogota and Old Providence, the two locations in which it was recorded. Baile Bucanero shows off a funky Calypso / Gaita big-band in full-flow, and melodic joy-grooves dominate in every track. Released by Soundway.

No Monster Club
Where Did You Get That Milkshake

No Monster Club is the project of the prolific Dublin-based producer Bobby Aherne. Having already released a dozen albums, Aherne's style is a tongue-in-cheek take on pop music, mocking a lot of contemporary pop while being compared to "a stripped-down sugar high Pet Sounds". 'Where Did You Get That Milkshake' is the band's first 7" with contributions from other Dublin contemporaries (the album features a member of indie pop band Ginnels, and the artwork is by the drummer from Squarehead), proving that Dublin's music scene is just as incestuous as Leeds'. The results are a bunch of instantly catchy, off-kilter pop gems.

Milk Kan
The Glitch Country EP

I wasn't expecting to see a reference to witch house in a press release in 2018, but hey what can you do. The Glitch Country EP is the first physical release from Milk Kan since 2011 and as it's name suggests, offers up a short meal of improbable fusions. Glitch and country, drill and witch house.

Flame 1 (Burial & The Bug)
Fog / Shrine

A new collaboration landing, between night bus mystery man Burial and bass-weight Skeng supremo The Bug! For many fans of the UK bass music scene, this will be the collaboration of their dreams, and these two tracks under their Flame 1 handle do not disappoint in the slightest. These dense, smoky, dubbed out and deeply atmospheric slo-mo steppers come via Pressure, a new label from Kevin Martin himself.

And The Golden Choir
Breaking With Habits

Indie encounters of the grand and soulful kind from Berlin’s sumptuously-named And the Golden Choir. This one-person choir of one Tobias Siebert mixes up various instruments and references, but his overall style is quite a consistent, camp melodrama - somewhere between Dead Can Dance and Keane.

Unit Moebius
Bunker 005

Everyone has a mental image of what a central European squat party is like. Speed, crusties and really hard acid techno, right? Yeah, the music that’s playing in your head now was probably made by Unit Moebius. The producer crew's legendary Bunker releases emerged from The Hague’s 90s squat scene and still pack a punch more than two decades later. The B-sides are particularly relentless.

Birdpen
There’s Something Wrong With Everything

There’s Something Wrong With Everything by Birdpen is perhaps not the doom-laden title it initially appears to be. Whilst they do lament the state of the world that is piped into our living rooms via the TV, they suggest that you do something to find the positives and get out of the endless cycle of negativity because nothing’s perfect, there’s always something wrong with everything. Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein
Stranger Things 2 (A Netflix Original Series Soundtrack)

The SURVIVE members return with their soundtrack to the second series of the Netflix sci-fi show. Recalling the classic synth scores of Tangerine Dream and John Carpenter is part of their remit, but this isn’t just lazy nostalgic simulation - there’s oodles of inventiveness, sensitivity and drama here. And one can only imagine Dixon and Stein had an absolute blast making it. As Dustin might say, you will not resist these pearls! Jewel case CD or lavish double LP in both black and clear/splatter editions.

Acid Pauli
Selected Indianer Works

Acid Pauli (aka Martin Gretschmann of The Notwist) has soundtracked the new film Es war einmal Indianerland, and this release picks out the best sections of that soundtrack for some separate listening. Its an eclectic set, with Pauli playing to the mood of each scene, but Selected Indianer Works sounds brilliant on a stereo too. LP release on Ouie.

DJ Lag
Stampit EP

South Africa's gqom pioneer DJ Lag is certainly no slouch when it comes to making dancefloor killers. Lag's Stampit EP follows his self-titled debut of 2016 and features 4 more hard-edged percussive cuts. Heavy hitting drums are at the fore of the sound Lag introduced to Durban and the world. It's rhythmic, it's potent, it's energetic; let's do this! 12" EP on Goon Club Allstars.

Arc Iris
Icon of Ego

Brooklyn label Ba Da Bing! (Julie Byrne, Katie Von Schleicher) drop the third LP from avant-pop group Arc Iris. For three people they sure do make a big sound on Icon Of Ego. Singer/guitarist Jocie Adams provides an anchor for the band’s complex, slightly math-indebted brand of electronic rock. Imagine Dirty Projectors with The Physics House Band shoring up the live show and you’re there or thereabouts.

Justice
Woman

The French lords of electro-house circa 2007-9 are back after quite some years away. Woman has the classic feel of Justice’s much-loved earlier material, but they haven’t ignored what music has been getting up to in the intervening years. For one thing, there are a lot more vocals on Woman. CD and double LP editions, with an etching on the vinyl D side.

The Black Dog
Black Daisy Wheel

Beloved electro-grumps The Black Dog are back with a pair of distinct albums on the theme of dismal, hysterical post-truth media society. Black Daisy Wheel tackles its dystopian theme in a subdued, ambient style, with uneasy textures and characteristically gloomy synths drifting about. Occasional beats find their way in, such as on the dubby ‘We Must Repeat’. There are also moments of total, aching beauty, such as the climax of ‘Cognitive Dissident’.

Terry
I'm Terry

Hello Terry. Rather than a person (like Venables) Terry is in fact a band from Australia none of which (to my knowledge) are called Terry. Cursive
Vitriola

Emo punks Cursive have passed the time since their inception writing about the difficulties of settling down and keeping the love you've found. Tim Kasher has effectively made it his life's work to expose, via shouting, the stresses of domestic living, and has also made some great, weird concept albums about relationships like The Ugly Organ. After a pithy dud in I Am Gemini, their 2012 rock 'n' roll monodrama, they return with Vitriola. An absolute classic Cursive album name, the record promises a return from founding drummer Clint Schnase, and considers (what else) the dystopia hellscape we're living in. It will no doubt be melodic, brash and all at once.

Cristobal Tapia De Veer
Girl With All The Gifts

The Girl With All The Gifts is a notable new zombie film, coming with a soundtrack by Cristobal Tapia de Veer which is presented here on vinyl. Cristobal’s music uses lots of electronic processing of voices, violins etc. to produce a dense and busy soundscape that recalls certain bits of the Radiohead catalogue as much as it does the more traditional zombie soundtrack touchstones. Amish Boy
Laika Test Project

We don’t know if you’ve been keeping up with the Power Vacuum label since its inception in 2012, but if you haven’t then we suggest that you familiarise yourself post-haste. Amish Boy’s Laika Test Project is the twenty-first drop on the label, and like the other twenty it’s a brilliant collection of hardcore club fare. The six tunes here may be a smidge less abrasive than, say, the brain-melting industrialism of Oleka’s Ostentiferous, but Laika Test Project is still a punchy mix of raggacore, techno, grime and rave styles.

Various
Air Texture Vol.VI – Selected by Steffi and Martyn

The Air Texture series reaches volume six and for the occasion drafts in Steffi and Martyn for another double-CD's worth of previously unreleased gems. Consider the calibre of the selectors -- famous both for their individual spins on house and techno -- and then consider the brief as per usual: leftfield selections, ambience aplenty and techno in name only, too widescreen perhaps to be limited to the dance-floor. 26 tracks, including appearances by: dBridge, Shed, FaltyDL, As One, KiNK and of course, Steffi and Martyn themselves. The vinyl option is a double-EP with 8 tracks.

Atmosphere
Mi Vida Local

Mi Vida Local is the seventh album from long time "alt-rappers" Atmosphere. It's coming up on three decades now that the duo of Slug and Ant have been practicing their craft, but more importantly it's been two years since their last album. America's last two years have been troubled and in response the band have turned to their local community, to create something warm, familiar, and defiant.

John Daly
Selections From "We Will Live Again"

John Daly created the music heard here while going through a serious personal tragedy, and that feeling of loss inevitably imbues the material with a certain weight, even while the house beats remain groovy. Becker / Stegmann / Zeumer
Ich Traume So Leise Von Dir

Ich Traume So Leise Von Dir is the insular and off-kilter works of experimentalists Becker / Stegmann / Zeumer. Clotted with funky bass prods in tandem with sporadic spoken word, the one-off Germany-incepted project amounts to a heavy dose of Kraftwerk-inspired krautrock, kicked off by the crisply-produced synth-feast - Mein Tanzlied.

Hands

Hinosch are a Dusseldorf-Osaka proposition, featuring two people who have variously been in To Rococo Rot and Goat. Hands is their first full-length album, and it is staunchly instrumental, though less improvised than their past work, What we hear is fully-fledged, busy and bustling electronic music, driven by proper drum machines and wee tape loops. E-Unity
Tallarita EP

French producer E-Unity (one Loïc Berger) releases his inner bee for London’s FTD Records. The title track does a mode-switching dance around clubby references, which is both awkward and absolutely compelling at once. Ryley Walker
Golden Sings That Have Been Sung

I would have happily waited ten years for another Ryley Walker album if it showed even half the brilliance of 'Primrose Green' but here is another one already. Walker is one of the most vital songwriters out there today and early indications of this oddly titled opus show that his lush ornate guitar playing is intact along with a sound that could be linked to fellow Chicago types Tortoise and Jim O' Rourke. The world should be excited.

Classic film, classic soundtrack: its Jaws! Answer Code Request
Gens

Four years on from the debut Answer Code Request LP Code and the Berghain resident issues this murky, tense follow-up. Gens is a pretty unremitting listen. Most of the tracks here see monolithic four-on-the-floors shrouded in great billows of hissing reverb. Unearthly synths and clanking percussion skulk in the fog. Only on the likes of the mournfully weightless ‘Orarum’ does the haze clear.

Das Body
Das Body

Luminelle Recordings did good earlier this year when they released an excellent bedroom pop record from Helena Deland. This, the eponymous debut EP from Das Body (great name), is also pretty decent. Numbers like 'Boys' also sound a little like that surprisingly good Paramore album which came out recently.

Nova Materia here show their debut album to the world, full of their idiosyncratic take on electronically-driven post-punk. The final (at the time of writing) LP from A Certain Ratio is set to wax once more as part of Mute’s ongoing ACR reissues series. Though 2008’s Mind Made Up may not carry the same clout as seminal records like The Graveyard And The Ballroom, it still finds the band in rude health despite the members all being well into middle age. GOGGS are yet another band who feature the world's most active garage rocker Ty Segall. This time he's on guitar whilst Chris Shaw 'smokes the mic' as the press release confirms. That information coupled with the fact that this appears on In the Red suggests that this is lively punky garage with the most fuzzed out guitars you ever heard.

Odetta Hartman
Old Rockhounds Never Die

Odetta Hartman’s sound is an odd mish-mash of stuff. It’s rooted in post-blues styles like rockabilly, 50s r ‘n’ b, country-rock and soul, but there’s also influences cropping up on Old Rockhounds Never Die from genres as diverse as psychtronica and future-boogie. It makes the fifteen tracks of this LP hard to predict, but in a good way. Imagine Jack White of the last few years if he was everything Jack White isn’t.

The Holydrug Couple
Hyper Super Mega

Chilean psychsters The Holydrug Couple return to Sacred Bones for their third LP on the esteemed indie imprint. The band have said all the right things in the run-up to Hyper Super Mega, talking us through their frustration with capitalism and their despair at the oncoming ecological apocalypse as well as name-checking The Beatles and The Beach Boys. This eleven-track record backs up what they've said thus far. All in all it’s quite a bit like Tame Impala.

Arve Henriksen
Composograph

Earlier this year a mere digital download courtesy of Henriksen himself, the tireless Norwegian’s Composograph finds itself bumped into the Rune Grammofon roster proper alongside new album The Height of the Reeds. Comprising material from the same string quartet sessions that yielded The Nature of Connections in 2014, these are similar arrangements, but a touch gloomier, chillier and creepier.

T&K Crew
Memory Child

Posthuman’s Balkan Vinyl imprint (Mark Archer, Perseus Traxx) drop an EP centred on T&K Crew’s ‘Memory Child’. The original is acid (it’s always acid with this lot) with a nice techno bite to it. Three remixes each give the tune a different spin. The label bosses pare back the 303 to create a bleeping electro-house delight; Kirk Degiorgio takes us to Chicago; and the ‘Acid Tool’ re-rub is - who’d have guessed? - yet more acid.

Are you allowed to go at 150 BPM? Isn't that one of the forbidden tempos? Well no one ever told Linkwood who's determined the make you dance (fidget?) faster than you thought you could. Fresh Gildans features three new tracks from the electrofunk producer. But don't get too excited, the B-side takes things a bit easier.

Marcel Dettmann
Test-File

One of the living giants of today’s techno scene, Marcel Dettmann, of Club Berghain’s Ostgut Ton, is not one to sit still. Whenever he leaves the Berlin bunker it’s generally to drop a 12” of dark and bleak techno. Test-File counts 6 tracks and 22 minutes, all of which dance-able, and covers the spectrum from techno to dirty acid house.

Isabella
Whistle

He’s a busy bee, that Peder Mannerfelt. As well as touring and releasing his own records at a rate of knots, the Swedish producer also manages to make time for running his own Peder Mannerfelt Produktion label. The latest PMP drop comes courtesy of Boston-based artist Isabella. The five tracks of her Whistle EP can be placed into two camps - ‘Residual’, ‘Penchant’ and ‘Vain’ are all whirligig techno jams that recall the work of Mannerfelt himself, while ‘Dicey Takes Its Form’ and ‘I Could Get You’ are eerie ambient things equal-parts Mark Mothersbaugh and Pram.

Are you ready to get really, really psyche-d? In various ways? Well, the artists on the latest compilation from Swedish label Höga Nord hope so. It's Convenanza 2018, after the festival of the same name. It's a pretty varied collection of artists to reflect the fun times; they include: electro supremos Woodleigh Research Facility (Weatherall & Walsh); Glasgow's Komodo Kollektif; the garage psych of The Limiñanas, and more!

Oluko Imo
Praise Jah

Despite Manu Dibango’s ‘Soul Makossa’ being a crucial record in the early days of disco and Michael Jackson’s ‘Wanna Be Starting Something’ bringing the track's refrain to wider attention, not many of the Makossa genre’s wealth of gems have crossed the gap from Cameroon to the West. Oluko Imo’s 1979 Makossa cut here joins the slipstream of excellent contemporaneous sub-Saharan club cuts that have been reissued by Soundway, Soul Jazz Recs et al. Backed with a dub.

Michael Nau
Michael Nau & The Mighty Thread

The Mighty Thread is not a really bad conversation on a message board that deviates into people agreeing to disagree, but rather the bonus name for Michael Nau, who made a bright, folksy record in Some Twist. He's back with this knottily poetic follow-up that embraces ambiguity and uncertainty with odd writing and performing decisions: different members of his makshift band placed their instruments in different rooms of the house, with an amp in the bathroom and a piano in the living room. This seemed to encourage a strange, communal vibe for a record that feels like a crew going one level extra to help out each other.

Unknown Artist
Rellik

Mask are a pretty nifty label. So far the imprint, which appears to have surfaced from Germany, has dropped three records by nameless artists. All of them have been made up of one-take techno or house jams, and all of them have been worth listening to. Rellik is just as good as the other two. The four tracks here mash a little dark techno and hip-hop into the mix.

Juan Atkins
Dimensions / Flash Flood

Life's Good is a new label about to bring us reissued classics from the golden age of Detroit / European Techno. Their inaugural release is this lush double-header from Juan Atkins: Dimensions / Flash Flood. Originally recorded in the early 1990s and issued on the famous "Panic In Detroit" compilation from 1992 under his M500 / Model 500 guise, "Dimensions" is a percolating, bleepy charmer now given its own side of loud-cut wax on this 12", freshly remastered by Rashad Becker.  Meanwhile on the flip, Flash Flood appears as a fresh twist on the original with acidic synth and ominously deep sub-bass.

Osheyack
Sadomodernism

‘Sadomodernism’ is a term used by writer Moira Weigel to describe the trend of contemporary arthouse films to focus overwhelmingly on inflicting pain on characters and audiences and denying pleasure (Haneke et al). Shanghai-based US producer Osheyack adapts this concept to music, resulting in abrasive, provocatively disordered and systematically un-genred compositions.

13 Reasons Why - Season 2 (A Netflix Original Series Soundtrack)

The press release for this record leads with ‘New music from Gomez’, which isn’t a great start, but things pick up when you realise that they actually mean Selena Gomez. Obviously this is some of the music from the second season of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why. There are new songs from (among others) YUNGBLUD and Lord Huron and, err, OneRepublic. Some golden oldies from New Order, Echo & The Bunnymen, Tears For Fears and other bands of that ilk also make the cut.

Oliver Coates & Laurie Tompkins
Ample Profanity

Oliver Coates is a prodigious talent. He’s been too good for too long now for anyone to put in a salient argument to the contrary. Here we see him returning to Slip, the label that put out his excellent collaborative LP with Mica Levi, for a short record of avant-anarchism alongside Laurie Tompkins. Ample Profanity is a disorientating listen - at one point it will resemble the kindergarten punk of early Micachu & The Shapes, then a few seconds later it’ll be on an Einstuerzende Neubauten flex.

David Housden
Thomas Was Alone: Official Soundtrack

Here we have a game soundtrack... We all love our game soundtracks, don't we?  The train of thought for David Housden when composing 'Thomas Was Alone', went something along the lines of: quiet, tense atmospheres (sparse piano fragments), dramatic builds (dense string sections) and spooky-otherworldy oddness (haunting, eerie synths). Both game and sounds have garnered widespread applause -- with BAFTA nominations for story *and* music! Now remastered for vinyl, in limited 180g red or 'classic' black LP editions. Also, includes new tracks for the release on PS4. Which'll make sense to the gamers, I'm sure. Release through Black Screen Records.

Volcov
From The Archive Vol. 2

Volcov’s first …From The Archive compilation was a tasteful collection of jazz-adjacent rarities that dated from as far back as the 1970’s. Two years on and the market for golden age soul-jazz/disco/funk reissues has become crowded, so Volcov has selected ten twenty-first century nuggets for the second installment of the series. The set, which includes tunes by Ron Trent and the Roy Ayers-affiliated Harry Whitaker, flows nicely between nu-jazz, neo-soul and hip-hop. All in all From The Archive Volume 2 is a fine bit of curation.
