Sontag Shogun & Moskitoo
The Things We Let Fall Apart / The Thunderswan

Breathy-voiced Moskitoo (Sanae Yamasaki) joins forces with Sontag Shogun (Ian Temple, Jesse Perlstein and Jeremy Young) to produce a pair of gentle electroacoustic ambient numbers for Home Normal. Field recordings, piano, Moskitoo’s voice and various electronics are all more or less processed into an elegantly-woven texture of easy listening. ‘The Things We Let Fall Apart’ and ‘Thunderswan’ were mastered by Lawrence English.

Image Club
Heavy Legs / Under A Hollow Moon

Well well well. Dub-pop braniacs Peaking Lights have their own label. This is in fact the fourth release on it so we shouldn't be too surprised; Heavy Legs / Under A Hollow Moon is their latest lightbulb halo moment courtesy of dancefloor runners Image Club, whose propulsive, forward-motion sound is sure to leave you exhausted. These two tunes zone in on frenetic percussion and offer plenty in the way of squelchy fun.

Mac McCaughan
Staring At Your Hologram

Mac McCaughan, formerly of Superchunk, released his solo debut, Non-Believers, last year. Now he’s decided to rework the whole thing, taking the indie rock of the original into semi-ambient territory, with long sections of electronic drift and occasional Robert Fripp-esque guitar. A surprising and welcome move. 500 copies on translucent yellow vinyl.

Paul White
Shaker Notes

Paul White is the instrumental hip-hop artist and electronic producer behind tunes like "Where You Gonna Go", but on 'Shaker Notes', his debut record for the R&S imprint, he goes into singer-songwriter territory. Well, as singer-songwriter as Paul White can get: it's a record about personal grief and romantic loss, but it's filtered through his usual experimental tricks and vignettes, with plenty of off-kilter percussion, distanced vocals and enveloping electronic layers. There's sax too. Gotta have sax.

Mike Cooper
Distant Songs Of Madmen

Distant Songs of Madmen was recorded live in Palermo during a solo set by Mike Cooper. It's a mix of free improvisations on guitar with some digital trickery as well as some traditional folk covers and original songs. There is a wonderful feeling of traditional blues alongside a sense of unpredictable, electric experimentation.

Anchovies

Powerful collab with former half of Cali Agents, Fresno’s Planet Asia, providing the rhymes over deep and scratchy soul selections from Detroit’s Apollo Brown. Milk Kan
The Glitch Country EP

I wasn't expecting to see a reference to witch house in a press release in 2018, but hey what can you do. The Glitch Country EP is the first physical release from Milk Kan since 2011 and as it's name suggests, offers up a short meal of improbable fusions. Glitch and country, drill and witch house.

Kyle Craft
Full Circle Nightmare

Simpering Southern glam-rock warbler Kyle Craft returns to Sub Pop with a second diner jukebox-ready long player, Full Circle Nightmare. Painstakingly faithful to the seediest, most regretful and wistful sentiments of the genre, the music sounds precisely as Kyle looks: as if generated by some sort of Americana algorithm. Does he actually exist? I think we should be told! Available nonetheless in limited LP, unlimited LP, CD or cassette formats.

Matthew Dear
Bunny

Dear Matthew, thanks for releasing a new album. I don't know what it sounds like yet. I'm told that it's kinda moody and ominous which would certainly offset the fact that it's named Bunny, because rabbits are incredibly cute. I've also heard that Tegan and Sara feature on a track, which is easily the best news I've had all year. I'm sure this record will speak to your need to make a myriad different sounds all the time and in good avant-pop ways. Thanks XOX Norman.

Acid Pauli
Selected Indianer Works

Acid Pauli (aka Martin Gretschmann of The Notwist) has soundtracked the new film Es war einmal Indianerland, and this release picks out the best sections of that soundtrack for some separate listening. Its an eclectic set, with Pauli playing to the mood of each scene, but Selected Indianer Works sounds brilliant on a stereo too. LP release on Ouie.

MC Paul Barman
(((echo chamber)))

MC Paul Barman has kept a relatively low profile since the release of 2009’s Thought Balloon Mushroom Cloud LP, offering only a mixtape and a handful of guest verses in the intervening years. A near-decade on and the wordsmith’s wordsmith drops (((echo chamber))). The LP’s lengthy track list allows for Barman to dazzle from every angle - his near-spoken, rhymes-within-rhymes style still impresses almost twenty years after he got his start. His standing in the community is represented in the album’s credits - MF Doom, Open Mike Eagle, DJ Yoda, Mark Ronson and ?uestlove are among those who’ve lent a hand, with the latter contributing six productions.

Out Of Touch

Fed up with today’s boring dystopia of perpetual connectivity and online networking? So is Helsinki tram driver-turned-cheerful-songwriter Jaakko Eino Kalevi. Cursive
Vitriola

Emo punks Cursive have passed the time since their inception writing about the difficulties of settling down and keeping the love you've found. Tim Kasher has effectively made it his life's work to expose, via shouting, the stresses of domestic living, and has also made some great, weird concept albums about relationships like The Ugly Organ. After a pithy dud in I Am Gemini, their 2012 rock 'n' roll monodrama, they return with Vitriola. An absolute classic Cursive album name, the record promises a return from founding drummer Clint Schnase, and considers (what else) the dystopia hellscape we're living in. It will no doubt be melodic, brash and all at once.

Various
Air Texture Vol.VI – Selected by Steffi and Martyn

The Air Texture series reaches volume six and for the occasion drafts in Steffi and Martyn for another double-CD's worth of previously unreleased gems. Consider the calibre of the selectors -- famous both for their individual spins on house and techno -- and then consider the brief as per usual: leftfield selections, ambience aplenty and techno in name only, too widescreen perhaps to be limited to the dance-floor. 26 tracks, including appearances by: dBridge, Shed, FaltyDL, As One, KiNK and of course, Steffi and Martyn themselves. The vinyl option is a double-EP with 8 tracks.

Atmosphere
Mi Vida Local

Mi Vida Local is the seventh album from long time "alt-rappers" Atmosphere. It's coming up on three decades now that the duo of Slug and Ant have been practicing their craft, but more importantly it's been two years since their last album. America's last two years have been troubled and in response the band have turned to their local community, to create something warm, familiar, and defiant.

Universal Eyes
Four Variations On ‘Artificial Society’

A line-up many may have expected never to see in the year of our lord 2018… Universal Eyes is a combination of Universal Indians and Wolf Eyes, and in this case that means Aaron Dilloway alongside John Olson and Nate Young again, as well as the vibrant power of Gretchen Gonzales-Davidson. Four Variations on ‘Artificial Society’ is a delightfully deep and murky suite of sounds: you know you’re going to love it. From Lower Floor Music.

Realm

Fresh from his recent exciting archival release and her very fine Cuspeditions album, Carl Stone and Miki Yui present their collaborative work together under the name Realistic Monk. Cave Walls (Part One)

Cassegrain member Alex Tsiridis takes it solo for a second time under his Rhyw alias. This is focused material, with no messing around to be heard. 12” on Avian.

E-Unity
Tallarita EP

French producer E-Unity (one Loïc Berger) releases his inner bee for London’s FTD Records. The title track does a mode-switching dance around clubby references, which is both awkward and absolutely compelling at once. Nailed it. ‘Everlasting Legacy (Collage Mix)’ follows a similar method, while the other two tracks allow a little more consistency.

Felt
Me And A Monkey On The Moon

The final Felt album saw the band go out on a rather sombre and perhaps disjointed note on an album that somewhat lacked the distinctive creativity of their previous work. That said it shows a hitherto unseen maturity with a slight country-ish feel and is notable by the appearance of pedal steel player B J Cole.

Answer Code Request
Gens

Four years on from the debut Answer Code Request LP Code and the Berghain resident issues this murky, tense follow-up. Gens is a pretty unremitting listen. Most of the tracks here see monolithic four-on-the-floors shrouded in great billows of hissing reverb. Unearthly synths and clanking percussion skulk in the fog. Only on the likes of the mournfully weightless ‘Orarum’ does the haze clear.

Das Body
Das Body

Luminelle Recordings did good earlier this year when they released an excellent bedroom pop record from Helena Deland. This, the eponymous debut EP from Das Body (great name), is also pretty decent. The four tracks here are politely funky synth-pop with a bit of a Christine & The Queens thing going on. Numbers like 'Boys' also sound a little like that surprisingly good Paramore album which came out recently.

Richard Reed Parry
Quiet River of Dust Vol. 1

While Richard Reed Parry has previously explored neoclassical textures, Quiet River of Dust Vol 1 sees him move into exquisite songcraft matching Beach Boys harmonies with electronic pulses and songs culled from both the British and Japanese folk tradition. He's also a member of twenty plus-headed stadium rock beast Arcade Fire which should help his solo works find a deserved audience.

Ratgrave
Ratgrave

Ratgrave is the new project from Julius Conrad and Max Graef. From squelchy electro-funk to smooth, chilled vibes via some more erratic beats, this album has everything you want for a good night in or out. It was recorded over a three year period in three different locations, although they are keen to point out that they were all on terra firma, and we can only assume that this informed the record’s final outcome. Ludwig L lends additional EFX to the album. LP on Apron.

Strings and Clusters

Bradley “anthéne” Deschamps’ Polar Seas label introduces another grand player in Reykjavik musician Mikael Lind, whose previous ports of call include Morr Music and Time Released Sound. Although it does nothing to help clichés about music from Iceland, Strings and Clusters does brim with ethereal strings, glacial textures and billowing, snowy grains. A soundtrack to BBC nature documentaries never made, a giant Sigur Rós interlude, a melancholy Instagram dreamscape of barren valleys and vistas… this one has it all.

He’s a busy bee, that Peder Mannerfelt. As well as touring and releasing his own records at a rate of knots, the Swedish producer also manages to make time for running his own Peder Mannerfelt Produktion label. The latest PMP drop comes courtesy of Boston-based artist Isabella. The five tracks of her Whistle EP can be placed into two camps - ‘Residual’, ‘Penchant’ and ‘Vain’ are all whirligig techno jams that recall the work of Mannerfelt himself, while ‘Dicey Takes Its Form’ and ‘I Could Get You’ are eerie ambient things equal-parts Mark Mothersbaugh and Pram.

Michael Nau
Michael Nau & The Mighty Thread

The Mighty Thread is not a really bad conversation on a message board that deviates into people agreeing to disagree, but rather the bonus name for Michael Nau, who made a bright, folksy record in Some Twist. He's back with this knottily poetic follow-up that embraces ambiguity and uncertainty with odd writing and performing decisions: different members of his makshift band placed their instruments in different rooms of the house, with an amp in the bathroom and a piano in the living room. This seemed to encourage a strange, communal vibe for a record that feels like a crew going one level extra to help out each other.

Osheyack
Sadomodernism

‘Sadomodernism’ is a term used by writer Moira Weigel to describe the trend of contemporary arthouse films to focus overwhelmingly on inflicting pain on characters and audiences and denying pleasure (Haneke et al). Shanghai-based US producer Osheyack adapts this concept to music, resulting in abrasive, provocatively disordered and systematically un-genred compositions.

13 Reasons Why - Season 2 (A Netflix Original Series Soundtrack)

The press release for this record leads with ‘New music from Gomez’, which isn’t a great start, but things pick up when you realise that they actually mean Selena Gomez. Obviously this is some of the music from the second season of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why. There are new songs from (among others) YUNGBLUD and Lord Huron and, err, OneRepublic. Some golden oldies from New Order, Echo & The Bunnymen, Tears For Fears and other bands of that ilk also make the cut.

Taipei Disco is music made by Dwart during time spent living in China, between the years 1989 and 1993. R.S. Pearson
Reality from Childhood Remembered as a Dream

First active in the early 1980s Seattle underground, experimental composer R. S. Pearson finally gets to cross “Get an official release with a label” off his to-do list. Collected for vinyl by Serendip Lab, these various short, charming works of arpeggio sequences and sound design also dabble in algorithmic/generative composition and strange, ambiguous moods. Oliver Coates & Laurie Tompkins
Ample Profanity

Oliver Coates is a prodigious talent. He’s been too good for too long now for anyone to put in a salient argument to the contrary. Here we see him returning to Slip, the label that put out his excellent collaborative LP with Mica Levi, for a short record of avant-anarchism alongside Laurie Tompkins. Ample Profanity is a disorientating listen - at one point it will resemble the kindergarten punk of early Micachu & The Shapes, then a few seconds later it’ll be on an Einstuerzende Neubauten flex.

David Housden
Thomas Was Alone: Official Soundtrack

Here we have a game soundtrack... We all love our game soundtracks, don't we?  The train of thought for David Housden when composing 'Thomas Was Alone', went something along the lines of: quiet, tense atmospheres (sparse piano fragments), dramatic builds (dense string sections) and spooky-otherworldy oddness (haunting, eerie synths). Both game and sounds have garnered widespread applause -- with BAFTA nominations for story *and* music! Now remastered for vinyl, in limited 180g red or 'classic' black LP editions. Also, includes new tracks for the release on PS4. Which'll make sense to the gamers, I'm sure. Release through Black Screen Records.

Volcov
From The Archive Vol. 2

Volcov’s first …From The Archive compilation was a tasteful collection of jazz-adjacent rarities that dated from as far back as the 1970’s. Two years on and the market for golden age soul-jazz/disco/funk reissues has become crowded, so Volcov has selected ten twenty-first century nuggets for the second installment of the series. The set, which includes tunes by Ron Trent and the Roy Ayers-affiliated Harry Whitaker, flows nicely between nu-jazz, neo-soul and hip-hop. All in all From The Archive Volume 2 is a fine bit of curation.

The Lytics
Float On

Haldern Pop (Wildbirds & Peacedrums, Dry The River) release the third LP by Toronto hip-hop group The Lytics. While the five-piece’s Souls Of Mischief/Pharcyde-y boom-bap might not be much in vogue at the moment, on Float On they do what they do with a nice balance of energy, charisma and eloquence. It must help that Mike D has taken them under his wing too.

Michael Giacchino
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

You may not know him by name, but chances are you've heard the music of Michael Giacchino. He's one of the current big-hitters in the world of film-scoring, and in the past couple of years he’s composed for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, War For The Planet Of The Apes and The Incredibles II. Furthermore, he's also had a crack at a couple of films from the rebooted Jurassic World series, and this Mondo release presents his music for Fallen Kingdom across two vinyl. It’s fun John Williams-y bombast.

Darwin Deez
10 Songs That Happened When You Left Me With My Stupid Heart

He may have had those frizzy tight curls cut off but here he is with a moustache like that and posing top off for an album sleeve. This is his fourth album which sensibly avoids the current vogue for synth rock and electro textures and simply writes good simple guitar pop with tunes you can whistle. Maybe he's ok after all?

Failed Magician

Guitarist Pete Spiby, formerly of alt. rock bands Black Spiders, Groop Dogdrill and Future Ex-Wife thought his career was over after an operation on his hand meant he could no longer play. Black Spiders tried a few farewell shows and Spiby realised he could play without pain. He had to get back to doing the only thing he knew how to do - rock. Failed Magician is his debut solo album. Hannah Leighton-Boyce
Industrial Folklore Tapes Vol. I - Instruments of Industry

Folklore Tapes here launch a series called Industrial Folklore Tapes, recognising that ‘folk’ life is just as likely to feature factories and machines as tending an orchard. Hannah Leighton-Boyce actually used some antique tools (sourced from a museum) in the creation of Instruments Of Industry, building up rich patterns of resonant metal ringing. The B-side is an audio catalogue of the tools. 10” vinyl release.

Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear
The Radio Winners

A mother-and-son duo here, which isn’t something you see every day. Mama Bear - the mum of the duo, if that wasn’t obvious enough - strums a nice guitar while her handsome son Madisen Ward intones in a manner similar to Ray LaMontagne and Iron & Wine. New EP The Radio Winners is embellished with strings and drums and various other Baroque niceties. There’s a lot of whistling on it, but you can skip those bits. The rest is pretty good.

Knightstown is Michael Aston, a man who has most notably composed music for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Being that those take place in World Cup years I can't be the only person who missed it but we now have a fresh chance to acquaint ourselves with Aston. On Knightstown, he centres his falsetto singing over woozy electronics in a similar vein to the latest Bon Iver album. On FatCat.

Natureboy Flako has a very old-fashioned looking piece of sleeve art for his new LP, but the sounds within are bang up to date, with an array of analogue synthesiser equipment as well as guitars and vocals in use. The Long Now
Restoration EP

The Long Now - a duo made up of Richard Norris (The Grid, Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve) and opera singer-turned-experimental musician Finnur Bjarnason - release their debut EP. Restoration is kind of what you’d expect from a classically-trained Icelander and a British electronica OG. Weighty soundscapes, pitter-patter beats and lots of messing around with voice. If you enjoyed that Kiasmos thing that Olafur Arnalds did a little while back then this one is likely to rustle your jimmies.

Second Yard Botanicals

Known to many as one third of Brandt Brauer Frick, Paul Frick finally gets his debut LP release via Apollo records. Yes, although Frick has released a handful of EPs over recent years and made music for over twenty years, Second Yard Botanicals is the Berliner's first full-length under his own steam. Well, he finally buckled down and got on with it, and aren't we glad; Frick used an assortment of instruments as well as his own field recordings and dissected breakbeats to craft a sonic collage infused with eclecticism and classical influences, interwoven with fragile melodies drawing on the poetry he takes in every day. Wowzers.

Randomer
Slicing

Here we find Randomer return to Dekmantel’s UFO Series for the latest set of his particularly brain-bending brand of soundsystem techno. The four dubs on Slicing all go equally hard, but in subtly different ways. For instance: while opener ‘Van Pelt’ recalls a toughened-up version of Cervo’s Afro-Disco, ‘Shadow Harp’ features a pummelling kick pattern that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Beneath tune.

Bear Bones, Lay Low / Don't DJ
Plafond 3

After two entries that have seen contributions from Legowelt and Milan W., the third record in BAKK’s Plafond series hosts new work from Don’t DJ and Bear Bones, Lay Low. Both of the jams here take up a full-side, and the artists luxuriate in the length of their pieces. While the latter's collaboration has yielded a psychedelic, New Age-y electronic odyssey in ‘Dissolve Into The Night’, Don’t DJ’s ‘Rag For Rudolf Rocker’ is a tense anti-groove that could be a soundtrack to a piece of contemporary dance.

DJ Residue
211 Circles Of Rushing Water

DJ Residue is the latest alias of the shape-shifting Gunnar Wendel (Kassem Mosse, The Siege Of Troy). 211 Circles of Rushing Water continues in the vein of recent releases on The Trilogy Tapes from Parris and Metasplice. This is erstwhile, obtuse electronica where the instruments and beats often appear near to coalescing into substantial grooves but seem reluctant to go the whole hog. Inga Copeland’s Lolina project springs to mind.

Soca Hustle / Let Me Love

The press release ain’t giving much away about this one. It’s These Eyes with Soca Hustles/Let Me Love on Invisible City Editions. There’s a very fun groove with these. LIFE
Grown Up

It had to happen sometime. We’ve entered the era which we could call post-Slaves, but we’ll more charitably call post-Sleaford Mods. LIFE - who have an album called Popular Music, but neither of these songs are on it - do a sprightly sort of Sex Pistols-with-a-drum-machine thing on ‘Grown Up’. It’s also quite similar to that song from Nathan Barley called ‘Terrorists Are Gay’.

Diptera
001 [Antenna]

Diptera are a duo who approach club deconstructionism in a rather literal way. First off Activist DJ whips up a quick bit of darkside garage. The resulting tune is then sent over to Wesley who mangles, bends and screws the original into strange new shapes. On 001 [Antenna], the end result is a four-track set that sounds like a Clark mix being funneled through a metal pipe. Szare also springs to mind. Out via Mana.
