I once zoned out to this album so much that I thought I was actually dead. Originally released on Hospital Productions as a 2CD back in 2008 it was thee Kevin Drumm album that most seemed to have struck a chord with the critics. Don’t get me wrong it’s a fine album but follow up ‘Imperial Horizon’ is in my opinion equally as brilliant and nobody seemed to give a shit about that.

Apparently the original vinyl edition (which I’m now glad I missed out on) wasn’t up to scratch so now we have a fully remastered version that captures the full frequency spectrum. ‘Imperial Distortion’ sits somewhere between ambient and drone and really has the power to unlock hidden worlds if you allow it. Who’d have thought a metal head from Chicago known for his blistering extreme noise output would have created a record with all the power and mastery of the drone artform as the greats; Eliane Radigue, La Monte Young etc.

Comparisons to the liminal zones created by Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works II’ are justified. I’ve had similar near death/ outer body experiences with Imperial Distortion as I’ve had with that record (okay so the fact I was wasted was probably a catalyst). Turn off the lights and bang this on at 3AM and be transported to that place your soul existed before birth and will probably return to when you cease to exist. A classic.
