It's a real goodie for albums this week. 'Visiter' by The Dodos is just marvellous. The main thing I glean from their music is that priceless feel of wild abandon that Department of Eagles gave me (these guys ain't so madly eclectic though) Billed as psychedelic folk, they're much more than that pigeonhole suggests. This album is flightly & warm sounding, the acoustics wrapping themselves round your head & heart, once again I must state that this is widescreen music. Meric Long and Logan Kroeber make a riproaring, vital noise that is much more than the sum of it's parts. if the Animal Collective dropped the Beach Boys obsession and wrote strummy hyper-pop with rudimentary percussion ala Violent Femmes they'd sound like this. 'Visiter' is packed with very bird-like music, swooping, soaring & free. The vocals are soothing, sing-song and pure. Occasional electric instruments such as guitar occasionally come to visit briefly but on the whole this is fast paced foot stomping soul music that I find riveting & delightful! There are some slower folksy moments but some of this is as rousing as Beirut, maybe less mournful, more celebratory. An absolute diamond of a record that provides real hope for 2008, one of the best years for new music I can recall! Wichita are responsible, hurrah!
