For Emma, Forever Ago is the 2007 debut album by Bon Iver, who at the time consisted solely of Justin Vernon. After his band DeYarmond Edison split, and he’d suffered a bout of serious illness, he set off for a cabin in the woods to write and record the album. The resulting recording is now a firmly established classic and appeared at the top of many critics ‘best of’ lists at the end of 2007.

4AD have licensed this Bon Iver album from Jagjaguwar. 'For Emma, Forever Ago' has been played at the towers a few times this week and I've only just learned that this is a debut album which frankly has shocked me as its remarkably accomplished sounding. I get bits of a less weird Panda Bear at times and Scritti Politti at others. The tunes are very well written with some stripped down acoustic guitar bits as well as more atmospheric, dreamy sounds. I really don't know what else to say about this other than it's just an album of really good songs about the trials of life. Another heartbreaker.

I don't want to say too much about this record. I'd give this a 10/10. The back story: a guy breaks up with a girl, goes into the middle of the woods to a cabin and writes an album with more heart and soul than probably any other record in existence.
