And runner up SOTW???? It's the most welcome return of ex-Rephlex starlet Leila with a stunning 10" on Warp. It's a sinister, dirty, creepy, brooding bugger is 'Mettle'. Instrumental with a slo-mo break, a moody, morphing Massive Attack bassline, lots of weird filters & haunting, distorted effects. Odd dislocated acid sounds, a tap dripping amplified to the max. It's got this kind of corrupted Death in Vegas meets Capitol K vibe to it with a spot of Jo Apps (remember the ace 7" on Planet Mu??) A mardy bastard of a tune, I call this Sewer=step cos it sounds like it was made for mutant crocodiles on crack. The flips are exclusive to this 10",'Heaven Sent' a haunting, dark torch song that sounds like armageddon soul for heartbroken androids. 'Ode to Mr Herrmann' is like a film score snippet from a Danny Elfman soundtrack (Batman, Tim Burton flicks etc) Creepy yet magical. We all think this is the best thing on Warp for an age. Let's hope Leila gets her just deserts 3rd time lucky as she's a superb talent.
