6/10 Mingus Staff review, 05 March 2008
One of two releases from the Eglantine records this week. First up is Malthruyst: 'Kaqo Dakesa'. Starting out like a million other melodic electronica (or IDM if you will) efforts, this soon changes course slightly with mad twists in tempo and an certain take on the Drill 'N' Bass aesthetic cahmpioned by the likes of Rephlex and early Planet Mu. There's plenty of distorted FX and washed out moody strings and sweeps coupled by a distinct approach to key lines that vary from the wobbly to the smooth. There's also some isolationistic, eerie ambient style deathscapes, tempered elsewhere by static, hum, buzz, drone and tones. When the beats kick in we're transported back to the late 90's and the heyday of lushly produced cyborg melancholia.
