'Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!' is Nick Cave's attempt at making a bona fide garage rock record, one that's rough around the edges to match the snarl in the singer's voice and the sewage in his songwriting. It's a coarser, heavier affair than normal, and also signals the end of founder Mick Harvey's tenure with the band.

As someone who admittedly only started listening to Nick Cave (&the Bad Seeds) about 5 years ago, each record I've discovered has grown on me, but none have struck me quite like "Dig, Lazarus, Dig!" I can remember when I first heard glimmers of the title track and fantasized that the new album would be quite swell. Was I ever surprised when I got the record and it was even better than I thought. From "Today's Lesson" grinding on about a pedophile of the night to "We Call Upon the Author to Explain" grilling God and non-believers alike, I just can't stop listening to this. I highly recommend it. And for those looking for something with a similar sound, I would suggest Tom McKean & the Emperors.
