8/10 Adam Black Customer review, 5th September 2013
Beautiful and sorrowful.
French Quarter's debut self-titled LP manages to combine ambiance, melancholy and psychedelia smoothly and beautifully in a way that brings me to the verge of tears at points. The two strongest songs on this album in my opinion, Bold With Fire and Build Fires, provide a smooth, depressing and powerful intro and a conclusion that stays with the listener for some time after it ends. While the middle of this album is somewhat redundant, the distorted and psychedelic sound, that resides especially in the powerful vocals, is certainly unique and helps keep the album less monotonous than it otherwise would be.
This LP keeps the audience on an emotional journey, ending three songs the gradually become more and more of what can only be captured by the word happy (at least happy relative to the rest of the album). The juxtaposition in this French Quarter album only amplifies the, while rather slow and sorrowful, moving adventure that this album provides.
The incredibly calming and almost heartbreaking experience this LP has to offer, thanks to its relaxed, distorted and relaxed vocal style and slow, deep, acoustic instrumentation, makes it truly unique and wonderful.
