8/10 Ant 24 January 2008
I am Ant and I fookin love a bit of acid me. Chicago acidhouse and jack tracks will always have a special place in my heart. The last few years have seen a revival in the more Chicago inspired style after the mid 90's were swamped with harder tracks coming out of Europe and the midwest USA. Anyone that's heard Ed DMX spin knows that he's a man who knows his acid as does Chris Moss and they both recently had EP's out on Jamal Moss' Mathematics label. On Various Acid, a quality comp from the heart of the European underground, thier slightly tongue in cheek opener 'Bang The Gong' sees the pair tweaking the Roland kit in fine style. Then The Dissonants (DMX, David Rainger and Nick Hutton) bang out an oldskool cut that could have appeared on 808 State's classic 'Newbuild' LP. Todd Osbourne and EDMX's 'Think' is a fine squelchy comatose acid number with thick drums, sharp snares and a fat wobbling 303 line. Andy Jenkinson's 'Acid Cormorant' wanders into acid funk with a cool house vibe. Cylob goes for a dark warehouse stomper while Syntheme goes for a twisted mucky builder. The real surprise here is from Yuri Lewitt who I'm unfamiliar with a sweet chord driven track with some proper filthy squelchy acid. Luke Vibert ends proceedings with a 'Lovers ' style groover. Aciiiedd 2X12" on Belgium's Mewe.
