Oooh. A lady's voice cuts through the frowns of indifference in the office, a breathy, pure & spine tingling affair that has me hooked. Nina Nastasia springs to mind whilst listening to Odessa Chen's new(ish) CD, 'Ballad of Paper Ships' Otherworldly gothic folk & post rock shapes combine in Chicago tinged fashion. There's splashes of Tara Jane O'Neil in there amongst brittle instrumentation that really reminds me in parts of Jeff Buckley. Fragile, atmospheric, gentle songs with a clarity not often encountered on this level. The production is full but not Albini dense. There's guest appearances by Wilco's Nels Cline & Danny Grody from Tarantel. Other reference points are Cat Power, Laura Veirs & Shannon Wright's less over-wrought moments. We had an album in over 4 years ago by Odessa & recall loving that too. This superb album will sooth your Winter parched soul like no other. Invest with love. (there's even origami instructions to fold yr own paper ship...awww!)
