I'm not surprised These New Puritans had their album held back for two months. For their remarkable debut to be lost in the Xmas mire would have been a tragedy. The only real thing that can happen now is fickle journalists leaving "Beat Pyramid' off their end of year snoozathons. I'm not surprised These New Puritans had their album held back for two months. For their remarkable debut to be lost in the Xmas mire would have been a tragedy. The only real thing that can happen now is fickle journalists leaving "Beat Pyramid' off their end of year snoozathons. The opening salvo of Numbers/Colours is just a perfect double header of hypnotic, cerebral angular indie. The lead dude is right when he comments the TNP manifesto has room for them to be a pop act. I can hear the seeds of a classic boundary eating cult band blossoming here. Atmospheric, futuristic, crystaline, hugely rythymical....almost NOT human. 'Elvis' sounds like Gary Numan crossed with The Rapture but out there in another galaxy. The early Fall comparisons are bollocks now when you see the scope they're aiming for here. The guitars are edgy and minimal for sure. But the tight as a nut percussion is mightily battered, bordering on tribal ecstacy in it's future Kraut haze. They haven't time to brood like some bands & any cynicysm is more abstracted. The lyrics are a little vague & mystical, sloganeering some may utter, but the message is clear - "We're spiky, fresh & deserve your full attention". I hope that along with XX Teens they'll spearhead a silver rocket into the heart of 2008! LP/CD on Angular/Domino.
