On Manchester's Akoustik Anarkhy collective imprint arrives a CD, White Devils Day is Almost Over, by Neil Burrell, a frankly odd man. Culled from Trans-Pennine basement lo-fi sessions, it opens with the avant acid folk single 'Oompa Zoompa' which is plain mad. Further off kilter explorations into cracked psych folk reveal a very human & warm talent that may have heard a Gong record at some point. Or very early Marc Bolan. It's playful gear throughout with the mans dancing, deranged voice skipping over a keenly strummed guitar on some tracks & others a more reserved, yearning balladeer approach prevails. It all sounds very intimate & quite timeless although if yr a folk purist you may find his take a little grating. I like however. This has some soul. Nice fried hippy digipak too.
