Vashti Bunyan: 'Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind' (Singles & Demos 1964 to 1967) (Fatcat) A limited two CD set and double LP (we'll revert to the single CD edition when it's gone) that covers her early period of released and unreleased singles, restored acetate demos, archive tracks and the opener and title track supplied by Jagger-Richards courtesy of Andrew Loog Oldham. What's striking about these songs is the softness and near fragility of her voice, the prime sixties sounding backing with swooping strings and gently caressed guitar strumming and subtle backbeats. The obvious comparisons are Sandie Shaw or a British sounding Francois Hardy. I'd say she's quite unique in her delivery it's the sound that evokes her time. If any of you have witnessed her live recently you maybe familiar with the heartfelt rendition of 'I'd Like To Walk Around In Your Mind', a standout track for me. At times very naive sounding, but in an honest, almost heartbreaking way. Somewhere between the folk music of its time and the emerging pop scene.
