Reset by Flying Lotus

'Reset' was the first EP and second major release from genre-bending producer Flying Lotus. Following '1983', it showed a more rhythmic and off-kilter sound which would be implemented on future releases. It's a spacey, psychedelic mish-mash of hip hop and left-field electronic sounds, released on the Warp label all the way back in 2007.

8/10 Mingus 27 September 2007
Flying Lotus: 'Reset' (Warp) Debut single for Warp for the much tipped abstracted hip-hop beat maker. Fans of Madlib, JDilla and Stones Throw will know what I mean when I mention the dreaded notion of 'the death of hip-hop', how there's only really one hip-hop label worth checking for, one MC worth checking for. (Stones Throw, MF DOOM). So what does the man add to the cannon: really heavy beats, jazz inflected washes, off kilter edits, killer switches of pace, texture, dynamic. He even uses quite a soulful vocalist on the opening cut, middling with a dancehall style rumbling broken beat affair. In between, the beats sound programmed rather than sampled, with a combination adding to the stew the head nod factor is pretty high up...pass the green kid?
