- In Return by Torche
8/10 Ant Staff review, 11 October 2007Time for some serious metaaaaaaaaal action courtesy of Torche. 'In Return' is monster riffs galore with cool slow heavy as hell moments and cavernous drum sounds. I think fans of Neurosis, High On Fire would dig this as it's metal of the more adventurous nature. It does also wander into bits of Isis/ Pelican type post metal too. Rock On... on Rock Action
9/10 gbar Customer review, 14th November 2017
Torche aren't ones to outstay their welcome - they make such enjoyably short records of their own original 'sludge pop' sound. In Return could be considered "the middle ground" of their discography, because not only is it physically placed in between their first two studio albums ('Torche' and 'Meanderthal'), it also holds the middle ground in an aural way. It combines the more sludgier, heavier side of their self-titled debut, but also it branches out into more poppier moments, which is more evident on Meanderthal. "Warship" and the title track opens up the EP by beating you mercilessly with riffs. The next few tracks follows in a similar vein, in that when it gets heavy, it gets REALLY heavy! I'm guessing that's something to do with detuned guitars, chugging bass and Orange amplifiers. "Tarpit Carnivore" is probably the heaviest track on the EP, with their signature 'bomb string' being used to perfection (plus it features lyrics which is pretty much a list of prehistoric meat eaters!). It may only be 20 minutes long, but In Return proves one thing: Sludge-pop - it works!
