Here's a new 7" on Kids by Neil Mcsweeney called Postcards. He's some singer songwriter dude who makes a serious noise. The press release says Lou Reed crossed with Tracy Chapman and that's not a million miles away. Also we heard bits of Roy Orbison and loads of Bryan Ferry in his voice. The guitars build up in a very Lou Reed/ Velvets way to a roaring crescendo. Extremely miserable sounding yet uplifting.... but as the man clearly sounds like he's about be all depressed everywhere he gets my vote.

I've got the album and have seen the band play, so I know a bit about Mr McSweeney...but although this song is great and really makes a change from the usual singer-songwriter stuff that gets radio 2 play, it's not exactly his usual style. Not a bad thing, of course, and shows that he's got real potential to diversify with his mood (which has to be said is generaly downbeat) But, I'm a big fan and if anyone likes Nick Cave, Tom Waits or Velvet Underground, then Neil McSweeney is a good modern Americana addition to your collection. To sum up, a very bold and emotionally intense debut.
