What an album this is. Coming out of seemingly nowhere this was the perfect blueprint for the Twilight Sad's blend of noise rock, shoegaze and folky textures. It's also the most Scottish album ever made which just adds to it's sense of majesty. Though they've made great albums since they've never topped this....but who could?

9/10 Clinton Staff review, 13 April 2017

It's probably one of my favourite albums of all time but how to convey why in a short review is today's challenge. It's one of those albums that seeps. On first listen you know it's good but it's only on repeat where it reveals it's true colours and hidden secrets and as the years go by it's an album you can dig out and know that you are going to enjoy it.

The Twilight Sad here found a perfect sweet spot between lonely folk music, dynamic indie rock and buzzing shoegaze. They effortlessly blend traditional sounding acoustic guitars, accordions and James Graham's heavily accented Scottish brogue with truly disconcerting bursts of guitar scree that are incredibly powerful. The perfect amalgamation of emotion and the true physical effects of guitars being played at extreme volumes.

Then there's the lyrics. I've played this album on numerous occasions yet have never quite figured out what the songs mean. Snatches of dialogue makes perfect sense but are juxtaposed with obscure reference. It seems to be about the past, about childhood, possibly about bad things.  The Twilight Sad's songs are patient, you wait for the chords to change and when they do it's like the relief of waking from a nightmare. Everything is unhurried and their timing is perfect.

For me one of the best noise rock albums of the last two decades. They've continued to do good stuff but this is a classic.
