9/10 Mingus Staff review, 26 April 2007
This weeks review missive from your humble, though opinionated reporter, Mingus the Lord of the Rude(est) is a little shorter than usual. As I'm away early I won't get my usual quota of guff. I do however get to get the most excited I've been for awhile about the new Andrew Pekler release "Cue" on Kranky. I first became familiar with his work through his releases on Scape. Thing is, I don't remember him sounding anything like this. Sparse, concentrated developing and enveloping serial systems that seemed to have grown out of premeditated themes. What I'm trying to say is each piece seems to have its own space or has grown out of clearly defined ideas. This is a very infectious, highly detailed set that gets better and better with each listen. Mostly made up of synthetic sounding electronics and what sound like treated found-sound, I think what has got me hooked, or continually pricks up my ears, is the warm atmospherics of the beats & intricate percussion. This warmth is augumented by keenly textured keyboard lines & washes invoking the soundscaping-mood grooves of film and television music. If I really needed to compare this work it would be the early work of To Rococo Rot or Stefan Schneider's Mapstation project. Much has been made lately of the fashion for Library music, this is much more than incidental muzak This is music to immerse youself in. It's been awhile since I got this excited about a collection of instrumental musics. I think it's time I delved back in my collection and reasessed what it is I liked about instrumental/electronica. If Mr Phil dosen't make this Album of the week then I'll nominate it as Mingus Rude's Opus of the month. Seek!
