2/10 Tom Customer review, 20th December 2018

Jack Penate specialised in an irritating style of indie pop that was prevalent during the mid to late 2000s. The formula went like this: get a telecaster, listen to a shit load of the Smiths, Wire, and Talking Heads, get a simple chord progression and make it as alternately rockabilly or jagged as possible (to make it seem "intelligent"), spew your thoughts with little or no editing in a mockney accent and just wait for mid-to-large indie label to snap you up. Spit at Stars, taken from Penate's debut album Matinee, follows such a formula. He reaches for profundity with the chorus "We all spit at stars", but it comes off like a pound-shop car sticker slogan instead. Shite.
